Introduction for the Day: Cradle and cross are inextricably connected on the fourth Sunday of Advent. Between a lovely tribute to the little town of Bethlehem and the Blessed Virgin Mary’s magnificent song of praise, the letter to the Hebrews reminds us in no uncertain terms that Christ’s advent is for Òthe offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all.Ó It is the kind of tension in which the church always lives as when in the Holy Communion – with high delight – “we proclaim the Lord’s death.”

Communion: All baptized Christians who celebrate the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine are invited to the Lord’s Table at the 7:30 service. Gluten-free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Due to the weight of the communion trays, you may be asked to take your glass of wine from the tray as it is presented to you.

St. Matthew’s Annual Meeting of the Congregation will take place on Sunday, January 27 at 12:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This year the meeting includes a potluck lunch. The meeting will include a report on 2012 business, election of new council members, presentation and approval of the 2013 budget, and a presentation and vote to begin a comprehensive fund appeal for a building program in 2013. All are invited.

Chancery Gift Certificates Available in Church Office Don’t forget to pick up Chancery gift cer-tificates from the church office before your next visit there. Certificates are $5 a piece, and each certificate is good for $5 at the Chancery. This is a fundraiser that doesn’t cost you extra! Chancery gifts certificates also make great teacher gifts. Children’s Book Drive for Next Door Foundation to Kick Off January 6:Did you know in Milwaukee’s lowest income neighborhoods it has been estimated that there is only one book for every 300 kids? St. Matt’s is hosting a gently used and new children’s book drive January 6-26 in the hope of chang-ing this startling statistic. Our goal is to collect over 2,000 books and we need your help! Please tell your friends and family about this drive! A collection box will be located by the main office. All donated books will be given to the Next Door Foundation who will be distribute them to some of Milwaukee’s poorest children.

2013 Contribution Envelopes are now available for pick-up in the Library Commons: Thank to Doris Potratz for labeling the envelopes. Unless you are a participant in the automatic withdrawal Simply Giving program, we encourage using contribution envelopes for your church donations. If loose checks are donated, the office staff must cross-reference your name to your number. This is somewhat time-consuming and is a possible source of errors in making sure your contribution is credited properly to your giving account.

The Singles Ministry will be cheering on the Milwaukee Admirals at the BMO Harris Bradley Center January 13th at 5 pm. We will carpool from church. Please contact Jennifer Wills at [email protected] or 262/483-1848 for more information. RSVP by January 9.

Give a Gift that Keeps on Giving St. Matthew’s Simple Gifts Catalog Available for Christmas Giving This Year

Most of us have at least one person on our Christmas gift list who is difficult to buy for Ð the person who seems to have everything. St. Matthew’s is offering a way to recognize and honor those people this Christmas while at the same time making the world a little brighter for those who have very little.

We are offering a partnership giving catalog with financial gifts of varying amounts that can be given in honor of friends and family. Amounts range from $5 to $250 and include tangible items to support all four of our ministry partners: Reformation and Cross Lutheran Churches in Milwaukee, Casa Esperanza in El Salvador, and Sing-isi Lutheran Church in Tanzania.

The catalog is available at the welcome center and through the St. Matthew’s website. To make a purchase, just fill in the order form in the catalog, indicating the item number, and turn it into the office with your check made out to St. Matthew’s. Gift cards for your purchases are available at the welcome center. Thank you for remembering our partners in your holiday giving!

It’s not too late... Look on our web-site

Year End Gift? Consider the Youth Mission Trip Fund As our youth mission team joins Hurricane Sandy relief efforts this coming summer, we anticipate higher than usual expenses due to the cost of building supplies and likely donations to hurricane relief agencies. If you are thinking of making an end-of the-year financial gift to St. Matthew’s, we ask that you consider designating it to the youth mission trip. In addition to logistical costs, the budget also covers materials and fees for many of the projects for which we volunteer during these works of serving. A small portion of our budget also supports college students going on the El Salvador partnership trip. Your gift will help us be God’s hands in the world. Thanks for your consideration. If you have any questions or would like more information, please talk to Pastor Chris or Gretchen.

Do you have a preschooler? Free CDs available at the Welcome Center which are a part of the Ò SplashÓ Augsburg Fortress faith formation series for preschoolers. There are three age levels for the CDs. Try one in the car on the way home today!

Celebrate the Joy with Christmas Worship

at St. Matthew’s

Christmas Eve:4:00 p.m. Children and Family Service: This service includes the sights and sounds of Christmas (including the sounds of many children) with carols, readings, children’s choir and messages, a sermon and children’s participation.

7:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Traditional Service A special liturgy, handbell music, children’s choir, a St. Matthew’s orchestra and communion. Fifteen minutes of prelude Christmas music begins at 6:45 p.m.

10:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Traditional Service Similar to the 7:00 service with music by the Senior Choir, and a small St. Matthew’s orchestra. Prelude musical selections begin at 9:45 p.m. Holy Communion is also offered at this service.

Christmas Day10:00 a.m. A quiet reflective service is offered on Christmas Day with the text being John 1:1... the order follows the Evangelical Lutheran Worship Book and communion is celebrated. Traditional hymns are sung throughout the service.

Prayers for PeaceIn the wake of the terrible tragedy that happened in Sandy Hook, it is hard to know how to respond – and the ultimate answer is complex. But as we celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace, we can lift our prayers for peace – peace in the world, peace in our communities, and peace for troubled souls. As a visual reminder of our prayers, the tree next to our sign on the corner of Wauwatosa and Milwaukee Avenues is hung with peace doves, 1 for each of those who died in last week’s massacre. The tree is wrapped in gold to represent the lifting up of prayers for the souls and families of those who died as well as for peace in our world. May peace come to all of us.
