The ornate image used for the cover of this program is a small section of the artwork created in 1920 by painter J.E.H. MacDonald, founding member of the Group of Seven, for the Association’s certificates for newly licensed members. MacDonald was one of Canada’s leading graphic designers and his work was strongly influenced by the Arts and Crafts designers in England and Canada. These certificates remained in use until 1935.

Allan Rae

Allan Rae was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, spending the first 25 years of his life on the Toronto Islands. An avid sailor, Allan has had his hand on the tiller of a sail boat since he was 10 years old. He attended Island Public School and Jarvis Collegiate before studying at the University of Toronto’s School of Architecture between 1956 and 1960. Allan studied under the mentorship of James A. Murray, James Ackland and Eric Arthur, and was President of the Architectural Society in 1960.

Between 1960 and 1961, he worked as a Junior Designer at Colletti Brothers in Boston, and lectured in the second-year Architectural Design and History course at the Boston Architectural Club’s syllabus program.

In 1961, Allan took a passenger freighter from Montreal across the Atlantic and up the Thames to London, England. He bought a 150cc VESPA scooter and wandered from Aalto’s Town Hall in Saynatsalo in darkest Finland, down to Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation on the sunny Mediterranean - two of the many highlights of an architectural pilgrimage (and extensive wine-tasting) throughout Western Europe.

Between 1961 and 1964, Allan was a Senior Designer at Howard Lobb & Partners in London, England, and in 1963 he became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Between 1964 and 1984 he was a Design Associate and then Design Partner with Bregman & Hamman, where he worked on numerous projects including the Master Plan for Harbour Square and 33 Harbour Square, Toronto, as well as the Variety Village Indoor Track and Training Facility for Able and Challenged Athletes in Scarborough.

In 1965, he became a member of the Ontario Association of Architects, and served on various committees. Since 1984, Allan has been Principal at Allan D. Rae Architect Inc., working on a wide range of projects including the Cowie Residence, Toronto; Quaker Village Prototypes, Uxbridge; 96 St. Patrick Street Condos, Toronto; the Roddy Retreat, Balsam Lake; the MacFarlane Retreat, Mulmur Hills; and YMCA Child Care Centres across the Greater Toronto Area.
