Please join us Saturday, September 9, 2017, for the Mississippi Arthritis and Rheumatism Society Annual 2017 Meeting. We will meet in Jackson at the Hilton Jackson for a day to learn from and network with our colleagues from all across the state. The Annual 2017 Meeting is shaping up to be packed with topical, multidisciplinary

presentations.

We are pleased to have the renowned Dr. Jack Cush from the Baylor Research Institute as our keynote speaker. He will discuss the safety of biologic agents. We will also have presentations related to current

issues in rheumatology practice including a presentation on MACRA. Rheumatology fellows from the University of Mississippi Medical Center will test our knowledge and stimulate our minds with a few

interesting cases encountered in the academic setting.

Please encourage your colleagues in and outside the society to attend the meeting.

We hope to see you in September.

Best,

Education NeedsRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory rheumatic disease seen in clinical practice. It manifests with synovial inflammation of peripheral joints in earlier stages but can truly involve a number of other organs. The management algorithm involves early diagnosis and treatment with traditional disease modifying agents (DMARDs) with rapid escalation to biologic response modifiers. Although the biologics are quite safe, they can have specific adverse events, and it is timely to review recent advances in this knowledge and the specific challenges these bring in the management of this disease. Improved understanding of the immunopathogenesis of spondyloarthritides (SpA) has paved the way for new specific immune interventions for this inflammatory disease similar to those for rheumatoid arthritis. New biologics have been developed on this basis or are in the process of clinical development and open up new therapy options for patients. Current standard of care is largely empiric. Recently published guidelines and availability of newer therapeutic agents require practicing rheumatologists to keep up with the advances. It is timely to review pathogenesis recent advances and consider any issues in application of the newer agents and guidelines. Case based presentations and discussion remains one of the best ways to learn management of rheumatic patients and its use in an “evidence based” manner, which highlights the practical application of the current treatment and management options for rheumatic diseases. In today’s health care world, there are many obstacles encountered while striving to run a successful rheumatology practice. Staffing effectiveness, efficiency, overhead increases, new revenue constraints, managed care contracting, and compliance are just some of the pressures pushing practices to their limits. Thus, rheumatologists face important decisions when starting a private practice, such as whether or not to accept insurance, practice concierge medicine, join another practice or a much larger health care organization, or just calling it “quits.”A medical practice demands strategic economic knowledge when financial decisions can lead to a successful business or to failure. Encompassed in the presentation entitled, “The Future of Rheumatology” are some of the recent changes that have occurred and the future directions that rheumatologists will embrace to hopefully increase productivity, profitability, and overall patient and staff satisfaction.Today’s challenging health care environment is affecting the way physicians manage their practices by interfering with access to care and forcing physicians to make difficult decisions. Physicians seek to continue to provide quality care, while contending with reduced Medicare reimbursement rates, medical claims, process errors and inefficiency, and legislative and regulatory changes. Rheumatologists need to be aware of emerging trends in practice management, payer reform, and administrative simplification that impact the success of their practices and quality of patient care.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees should be able to:

1. Review the adverse effects of biologics used in treatment of RA.

2. Recognize the specific adverse events based on immunologic profile of biologics

used in RA.3. Review the special circumstances that apply to the treatment of rheumatic diseases with biologics and develop a knowledge of how to manage them.4. Explain the role of genetics in pathogenesis of spondyloarthritdes.5. Identify the current classification and epidemiology of spondyloarthritides.6. Explain the evidence based management of axial spondyloarthritides. 7. Describe recent advances in treatment of spondyloarthritides.8. Recognize that there are practical issues in management of patients with rheumatic diseases and it should include individual circumstances. 9. Examine the business, legal, and regulatory forces impacting the delivery of medical care, emphasizing the impact on rheumatology.10. Explain practice settings: starting a practice, joining a practice or a larger health care organization.11. Describe the utility and current financial environment of ancillary services.12. Recognize that accountability and standards will inform payers and patients on how treatment decisions correlate to cost and quality.
