The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) thanks all of our partner national sporting organisations (NSOs) for your continued hard work and commitment to excellence. All of you understand innately the importance of sport in Australian life. It’s much more than a source of national identity and pride, it’s the fabric that binds us together - a common language for all, with multiplier benefits in health, education, social cohesion and the economy.

There were many great sporting events to celebrate during the course of last year – the launch of both the AFL Women’s competition and the National Netball League with prime-time TV coverage, our most successful winter sports season ever on the world stage, and fairytale victories against the odds for Cronulla in the NRL and the Western Bulldogs in the AFL. Last year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games underscored the challenge however for Australia in retaining its status as one of the world’s pre-eminent sporting nations, given rising competition from developed and developing nations alike. We must keep innovating, being bold and willing to change both on and off the field if we are to succeed, not just in Olympic and Paralympic sports but across the sporting spectrum.

We appreciate the willingness of NSOs to embrace this challenge. We commend athletes for their dedicated commitment to training ahead of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and,

further ahead, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. One of the most important long-term challenges for our country is to help our children be physically active, to participate in sport and enjoy its lifelong benefits.

The ASC’s Sporting Schools program has now reached more than 5,600 primary schools around Australia and has already begun a targeted program for high schools. It is vital to ensure physical education is re-emphasised in the national school curriculum. To this end, the ASC has been doing ground-breaking work on physical literacy for children and youth and we look forward to rolling this out nationally in the year ahead.

As the national leadership organisation for sport in Australia, the ASC was delighted when our new Minister for Sport the Hon. Greg Hunt recently proposed a National Sports Plan, the preparation of which will be led by the ASC. This will create, for the first time, a comprehensive blueprint for Australian sport. It’s an outstanding initiative and we thank the Minister for his leadership and vision. We hope all NSOs take the opportunity to contribute their views to the plan. Most of you will know that this year the ASC welcomed a new CEO Kate Palmer, a talented sports leader, who has quickly built excellent relationships with sports and is embracing the challenges ahead with an inspiring enthusiasm.

Finally, I say a big thank you to the army of volunteers – parents, coaches, officials and

administrators - who contribute their time and services for the good of Australian sport. You bring community strength, passion and great value to the identity, productivity, cohesion and health of our nation.

The ASC wishes you every success in the year ahead. We look forward to working closely with you for the common good of Australian sport.

2017 BMX Annual Report 5

These first 12 months of the new board’s tenure have been busy and exciting times. While a great deal of our work has been behind the scenes, I believe we have generated a great deal of excitement and satisfaction within the sport in the direction that we are taking BMX.

From the running of the successful National Series earlier in the year, to the amazing National Titles in Brisbane, to the announcement of the 2018 National Titles in Bunbury and releasing the details of next year’s revamped national series – we have seen significant change at the racing level.

Behind the scenes we have had major improvements in our OSM Database application, and the app that the office has developed I believe will enhance people’s membership experience and help us move towards the paperless electronic world.

The Board has worked well as a team to scrutinise all changes to ensure that they result in benefit to the members and work towards creating a harmonious environment within the sport – something we’ve been sorely lacking for many years. I would like to thank the board for their commitment and endeavours – it’s been a hectic 12 months and we are only just getting started.

The revelation to me (as President) has been the staff of BMX Australia. I always thought they were pretty good, but now that I have first-hand knowledge and experience of the effort, commitment and skills of the team I am in awe of their efforts and thank them very much for their fantastic work. Ably lead by Martin Shaw, the team of Toni, Sylvia, Daniel, Joel and Andrew (I’ll

include him because even though a contractor he feels like he’s part of the team), these people have implemented everything the board has thrown at them and a whole lot more – often based around their own commitment and drive – and our members are benefiting greatly from their efforts.

The other major areas of change were/are officiating and coaching. Paul Connors has done a great deal of work to streamline officiating and build the confidence of his team of officials, and of the sport’s confidence in them. Dale and Luke have had a challenging year with coaching – working with High Performance had added an additional layer of complexity to their already challenging roles but I believe we are in a good place to move forward in developing coaches/athletes in the coming 12 months – mainly thanks to their commitment and hard work.

So what is coming in 2018? More challenges, more changes and a much greater emphasis on the domestic racing scene and growing our membership and sport in general. The board is looking inwards in an attempt to improve the standard of our sport and further enhance our commercialisation opportunities by (dare I say it) “making BMX great again”.

2017 BMX Annual Report 6

The past twelve months has been a year of significant change for BMX Australia and as with any period of change this has created some challenges and opportunities along the way. Pleasingly, the changes seem to have led to positive outcomes for the sport as we look to ensure our members enjoy their involvement in BMX.

Upon commencing with BMX Australia in July last year, it was obvious that the most pressing need from an administrative standpoint was the recruitment of a number of staff members to ensure the management of the national office was capable of meeting the needs of the members. Fortunately, we were able to recruit a number of outstanding staff members to fill the vacant roles, with Toni Hulme looking after participation, coaching and officiating, and Joel Ulbricht managing the national suite of events. They joined Daniel Spence who has looked after our membership portfolio and we then added Sylvia Armstrong in the New Year to complete our staffing profile. This team work extremely hard each day to help service the members and help make being part of the BMXA family a positive experience.

The membership of BMX is a strong and diverse membership. There’s little doubt that our sport is a true family sport with the love of BMX racing being passed down from parents to children. You only need to attend any club day, state series or national event to see families decked out in the riding gear with both parents and children getting on the track. After a number of years of membership growth our numbers have steadied in recent times. As we look for new ways to attract new members and promote

our sport to the general public we know that we have a solid core of members for whom BMX is more than a sport but is a way of life. In looking to properly serve the members one of the areas that we have spent considerable time working on over the past year has been our membership database and event management system. The feedback from members was that it was not as user friendly as our members would like, so our staff has invested significant time with the system developers to address the concerns that have been raised. While the modifications are on-going, we are pleased with the progress that has been made in recent times and hope that the members have noticed the improved functionality. It has been obvious that BMXA needs to look beyond our traditional sources of funding in order to help grow the sport. In early 2016 a decision was

made to analyse the different opportunities that were available and any changes that needed to be made in order to capitalise on

these opportunities. As a result of this analysis a number of changes were introduced, including the development of a new website and a new logo for BMXA that represented our individual identity and new branding across our national events.

Allied with this process was a commitment to improve our relationships with State governments particularly around the hosting rights for our National Championships. The National Championships is an event that attracts a significant number of riders and spectators and as a result of research work done into the economic benefit of the event to the local community, for the first time we were able to present State governments with an attractive funding proposal for the hosting rights to the event. Western Australia was the first government to reach an agreement and will host the 2018 National Championships with encouraging negotiations continuing with other states in relation to future year’s events. The investment provided by Tourism Western Australia is greatly appreciated and represents a solid endorsement of the value the National Championships brings to a local economy.

The 2017 National Series and National Championships were once again run successfully in the early part of the year. The National Series visited Nerang, Shepparton, Bathurst and Cairns, with great events being held in each city. The Bathurst event also included the Oceania Championships where Australian riders won three of the four championship divisions. The event season culminated with the National Championships at the Sleeman Centre in Brisbane. Superbly organised and conducted

by our Events Manager, Joel Ulbricht and National Officiating Director, Paul Connors, the event was held in beautiful weather that really showcased all that BMX racing has to offer. The event culminated with a wonderful day of racing on Championship Saturday in front of a large crowd of enthusiastic onlookers. Caroline Buchanan and Kai Sakakibara claimed the National Champion crowns in the elite classes but he real pleasure was watching the riders across all the age categories out on the track giving it everything they had. No event captures the true nature of BMX like the National Championships where families and friends make their annual pilgrimage to this wonderful event.

The BMX High Performance program continues to be run by Cycling Australia, despite the best efforts of BMXA to lobby the Australian Institute of Sport for control of the program. Despite our disappointment at the AIS decision, we still closely follow the performances of our riders at the elite level. Of course, the highlight of the year was the Rio Olympic Games, where five Australians

represented the country in the BMX Events. All our riders performed well, but as we know, BMX is a funny sport and despite being in great form Australia was unable to claim that elusive medal this time around. Underpinning the High Performance program again this year was the BMXA Academy which aims to ease the passage of talented riders to HP level. Run by Luke Madill and Simon Anderson the Academy once again provided an important development step for the riders selected.

The successful running of any sporting organisation takes the combined efforts of many people and there are many acknowledgements that need to be made. Firstly, to the staff of BMX Australia, I pass on my thanks for the mountain of work they do each day and the professional manner in which they do it. I should also thank the Board members of BMX Australia, who give their time to help guide the direction of the sport and in particular the two Presidents that I have worked with this year. There are many hours of work behind the scenes done by the Directors for little more than the occasional pat on the

back and the satisfaction of having contributed to the development of the sport. Finally, to the many volunteers at club and state association level who make the sport run each and every week, we thank you for your continued contribution.

We look ahead to another great year of BMX racing with plenty of challenges left to face. In doing so, we hope to see you at a track somewhere taking part in the sport we all love.

2016/17 has seen significant change within BMX Australia. The success of the 2017 National Championships event was an accurate reflection. BMX Australia Board and staff will continue to deliver a great product for the membership and stakeholders. The Vice President portfolio adopted the Coaching Portfolio, as well as supporting fellow Board members and staff. The past 12 months has seen relationships established with key stakeholders. With a full review taken, and plenty of planning taking place, 2018 will see changes that will benefit all participants and coaches in BMX. To all the volunteers working throughout the sport, thank you for your efforts. Without your efforts the sport of BMX would be disadvantaged. Plans for 2018 are exciting, and certainly look forward to another year building this great sport.

BMX EventsIt was fantastic to attend the Nationals at Nerang in perfect weather and to be part of the excitement of nationals racing. This event was well run and well received. Thank you to all our wonderful staff and volunteers who work hard to ensure that it all runs perfectly. Our events night was a huge success and was a great opportunity to get together with members from all over the country and celebrate our sport. Big congratulations to all involved in this event whether competing or organising. Whilst this event did help to contribute to revenue in BMX Events the overall result for Events was a loss. This was due to the running of the Grand Assaults which was not previously

budgeted and the Board decision to increase prize money in many categories. The largest increases in expenses were awards and prize money, hire of plant of equipment and TV production due to the increased event coverage and increase in costs of providing the coverage. Slight changes to the format of the Nationals resulted in decreases in event income as did being more focussed on dividing the costs and income between BMX Events and BMX Australia. Our focus for 2017/18 is to ensure more accurate understanding of income and costs around events

and continue with our marketing consultants to ensure grants and sponsorships around our major events are maximised. This process is well underway and we have had some success with the announcement of the National series in WA and the partnership with Tourism WA, Bunbury council and WA Government.

BMX AustraliaBMX Australia 2017 result was a loss of approximately $77000. The main reason is increases in costs in staffing which is vital to ensure our membership has appropriate level of attention and we are able to move forward on our strategic priorities. There was also increased one off legal costs which will not recur. We are closely

looking at contracts we have with suppliers to ensure these meet our requirements. 2016/17 has been a consolidation and building year as the Board has identified its priorities and level of support required by our athletes whilst considering external stakeholders and the part they play. We still have a strong balance sheet and are ensuring our resources are being used in the best way possible. Our staff has been bolstered and has meant that we are able to push ahead with many of our initiatives this year due to having the office fully staffed.

From a financial perspective we have worked through tightening up the financial processes and tidying up the balance sheet of both entities to make them clearer and simpler. The Board will continue to push through our marketing review which will raise the profile of BMX for our brand and financially. The ASC is continually requiring improvements in the financial and budget processes and these will continue to be our focus.  The Board continues to consider the strategic objectives of the organisation and has made considerable progress in moving the organisation forward on a number of these. The communication with our member states has been improved and I am sure they appreciate a new level of engagement with us. This will allow us to work together to solve issues and meet challenges especially around membership and how to ensure our members are retained and engaged. Increased financial stability will help the organisation to focus on its strategy and allows flexibility in its plans. I have enjoyed working with the Board and the staff of BMX this year and look forward to continuing to provide value in the coming year. It is a fantastic time to be involved in BMX and I am proud of the work the Board has been involved in and progressed during the year.

After being appointed into the role the priority was to re-establish the National Technical Committee. As a result, Lyndon Downing (Vic) & Chris Houghton (Qld) were re-appointed to the committee. The primary purpose of the National Technical Committee is to work on all technical aspects of the sport including the review of current rule books and suggestions / updates as requested by the State Technical Teams.

From there we then quickly concentrated on preparing for the 2017 National Series and National Championships. With the assistance of the BMXA Office staff we were able to deliver a great series and an even better National Championships.

There were 75 Volunteer Officials who assisted with running the 2017 BMX National Championships in Brisbane and without these people the event would not have been the success that it was. On behalf of the Board of BMX Australia I would like to thank each and every one of our members of the volunteer army. A great job WELL DONE and a huge THANK YOU.

The 2018 National Series planning process have already commenced, encompassing seven events to be raced from February to October 2018, the series will have a mixture of UCI sanctioned events and will run with all classes in accordance with the ARA rule book. The calendar has also been set up to work seamlessly with riders aiming to race at the BMXA National Championships, UCI BMX World Championships and select UCI BMX Supercross World Cup events.

Of the seven events to be announced, three will be UCI sanctioned and therefore will see junior elite and elite categories offered. The remaining four will offer a Superclass category and will run as a separate series. Challenge classes will have the opportunity to contest seven points-paying events.

We have enjoyed a great year in terms of the number of volunteers continuing to put up their hands to assist. As we know a “volunteer is the most valuable resource within our sport and without these people our sport would not survive”. The number of officials has grown to over 1900 nationally which is a great level of support of volunteers. There has been a slight decrease in level 1 officials over the past 12 months which can be contributed towards the number of members dropping out of the system.

The inaugural UCI Elite National Commissaire’s course to be held in Australia wrapped up in Brisbane in October, with 15 candidates having converged on Queensland’s largest city to take part in the event.

Travelling from all over Australia – as well as one candidate coming from New Zealand – the diverse group came together for four days of intense theoretical training on UCI principles, processes, rules and regulations. Impressively there was over 180 years of combined officiating experience across the attendees. All will receive a formally recognised UCI accreditation at the completion of their coursework.

The group was under the tutelage of presenter Loyal Ma of Canada, who has officiated for multiple cycling disciplines and has officiated at 27 world championship events across BMX and mountain biking.

I would like to acknowledge and thank BMX Australia staff members, Martin Shaw, Toni Hume, Sylvia Armstrong, Daniel Spence and the recently departed Joel Ulbricht. Without the support of this talented team of people we would not be able to deliver the support and service levels to the BMXA membership.

Yours in the Sport of BMX

Firstly, thank you to all of you for your support over the past year in my tenure as a director of BMX Australia.Being appointed to the board after great support from the member states gave me great confidence.Starting out attending some National Series rounds on the East Coast, many days and hours spent just talking within our great sport of BMX. The feeling amongst you was positive and allowed us as an association to move forward with a great degree of confidence.I started out the year with many meetings with Martin Ward discussing and making some plans as to where our new Event Software needed to go and how we could get there. After a short period of time Martin presented to me some very basic but very

promising developments. As time has progressed we are now at the stage where we can run a race meeting with it albeit without transponder timing. The next phase is close, with the introduction to the package of transponder management and timing. This is something we are all looking forward to!The next big step for me was the announcement that Bunbury BMX Club would host the 2018 National Championships. Thank you to the events management group and Esquire for making this possible. After many hours spent with a number of clubs in WA gauging there intent and ability to host an event of this magnitude I am satisfied along with the rest of the Board that we have made the right decision.

After visiting Bunbury just last weekend I can tell you all that they are very motivated and excited to make this the best Nationals they can.Having said that, they have a lot to live up too given what BMXQ and Sleeman delivered this year. Truly a remarkable event given that we had a very new board with very new ideas and also a new events manager.Given the chance I would very much like to continue along this path of making our sport GREAT, that is why I have nominated again this year and look forward to your support.

ThankyouMartin Brown

2017 BMX Annual Report 12

Well here we are at my first annual directors report.

The year has been one of a huge learning curve from the BMX National responsivities and mindset but also one of accomplishment and excitement for the future prospects of our sport.

Working in the areas of technology, engagement, participation I took much time to meet, by adopting an ‘understand before being understood’ approach in listening, speaking with not only BMX Riders, Clubs, Management etc but also other sports aligned with BMX and some not so. I was enlightening to find that the challenges faced by BMX are not dissimilar to the majority of sports, and more interestingly the methods we are employing at BMXA are being replicated by other sports as well to good advantage.

We do have challenges to face, as discussed with the State Chairs / Presidents at the Mid-Year Conference, we need to understand our “Broader Family” and work collaboratively to maintain the engagement of our members and their families.

As times change so do our methods of communication, personally I work in an industry that relies on instant communication and values very highly social interaction and trending to provide service that is specific and targeted while

allowing the Organisation to make change so as to reflect the broader goals strategically and holistically. Communication does not necessarily have to come from the President of your club, it could be from the Carer of a Sprocket after their first visit to a track, a simple question that needs to be answered for them about an issue that they have, using the power of a community that question can be answered not only for them be reinforced for others, and for

those policy makers may show that we need to address something previously overlooked.

Going forward into 2018 brings new challenges like the BMXA National Series roadshow visiting each state, attracting and engaging new members and more of existing members to this exciting concept will be foremost in our objectives whilst also supporting the engine room of our sport the grassroots members and clubs.

I have been excited to see the progress that the BMXA Board and our dedicated office staff have achieved this year and look forward to the steps forward we can make again in 2018.

During the last 12-months Sports Communication Australia (SCA) has completed its third year as BMX Australia’s (BMXA) Media and PR consultant.

The main roles of SCA, on behalf of BMXA, during 2017, were to report on BMXA organised and contested events, promote the sport via traditional and social media channels, including producing bi-monthly online magazine The Dirt, and producing a series of athlete profile videos for BMXA owned platforms.

In April 2017 SCA proposed to BMXA a change to The Dirt to take it from a bi-monthly online magazine to a weekly eDM. This was approved and SCA then conceptualised and developed the new product, which was subsequently implemented in June 2017. An edition has been produced weekly since that point. In order for SCA to deliver a premium service, a member of the SCA team is in the office with BMXA staff at least weekly, however is available seven days a week. Over the last 12 months SCA has been able to provide all of these key roles as well as directing BMXA and its stakeholders on crisis management, media strategy and content marketing strategy.

Along with the BMXA Participation Manager, SCA also created and implemented the 2017 National Sign On Day campaign. The campaigns involved creating video, imagery and written content that was used on BMXA’s owned channels and complimented by paid and targeted Facebook advertising.

Some of the highlights of the campaign include:12 ‘advertisement’ videos created in varying forms across Facebook

and Instagram, supported by digital graphics, web articles and The Dirt magazineCombined video views across all video content of 219,695

Combined reach across all video content of 556,818

Growth of engagement with ‘grass roots’ media outlets in local and regional has significantly increased, especially during state, national and international competitions. This has been combined with sustained state and national media coverage in mainstream news, print, radio and online television.

Throughout 2017 SCA also developed a new digital content direction for BMXA, that will see a new and more measurable and targeted approach to coverage of the 2018 BMXA National Series. As well as providing digital content, SCA will continue to report on all BMXA events and competitions as well as the national teams.

SCA would like to acknowledge the support of the Board and staff of BMXA, the national coaching and management staff and the riders and their families that we deal with on a daily basis.

NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT LUKE MADILL

has been a productive year

with the restructuring of the national pathway, coach education and rider development programs.

With continued invitations to the AIS around their Winning Pathways Workshops and Performance Coaching course, it has helped in guiding our new initiatives for 2018.

Communication with the States has been the main focus, and from the information I am receiving, it is very welcomed.

With Sharon Willoughby stepping down as the Talented Athlete Program (TAP) coach to support Sam, Simon Anderson was selected to fill her role and he has done an excellent job in his first year with the challenge riders.

The Academy Team yet again put

on a strong display of riding to prove that they are showing the potential for future international success.

The events that were supported by BMXA consisted of, World Cups - Papendal and Zolder, Oceania Championships - Bathurst, National Series and National Championships – Brisbane.

These events help the riders to gain National and International experience, plus help them qualify for the World Championships.

From these events we were able to see the riders who are stepping up and will be future categorised athletes.

There will be a restructure regarding the Academy. This will involve a name change to the National Team, and only riders who fit the Emerging and

Developing criteria will be selected in this area.

The National TAP team will continue. The main change here will be the engagement from the State Coaches and National Coaches communicating together to support greater rider development.

Thank you to all the State Coaching Directors, State Coaches, beginner, level 1 and 2 Coaches who have helped the development of our riders throughout 2017.

Looking forward to an even bigger 2018.

2017 has seen the Canberra Clubs continue to grow.

The 2017 ACT Championships held at the new Tuggeranong track which produced some close fast racing. With the lead changing three times in the men’s Superclass final.

The ACT Championships held the qualifier for the Australian leg of the Junior Test Team. This has always been a hotly contested event with the top for riders with the fastest time from the motos in the boys and girls having the opportunity to represent Australia against New Zealand at the NSW Pre- Titles.

ACT BMX continues to work closely with BMX NSW with holding ACT Championships and we would like to thank them for the support and assistance they provide.

The State Championships moves to the Melba club for 2018.

Both clubs have held a couple of come and try days throughout the year with the latest ones seeing around 70 participants at each track. We are still waiting for confirmation from the clubs on the how many of these joined.

ACT BMX is in talks with the Australian Institute of Sport, ACT Sport and the University of Canberra with the development of a Pre Elite squad.

Canberra Club

Coaching at the Canberra BMX Club has been well received with 40+ riders attending the weekly coaching sessions. They are also running dedicated coaching during business hours for mini wheelers.

The Canberra BMX Club novice senior category has seen an increase in both mums and dads taking up racing for the first time. The coaching sessions have been extended to include one session a week specifically tailored to new mums and dads.

The Canberra BMX Club has lodged capital works grant application to upgrade the track lights. This is a first for the Canberra BMX Club and it has only become possible now that the club has a license to operate on the land which was issued in February 2017.

As part of Her Canberra Active Week the Canberra Club is hosting a women’s only come and try.

Tuggeranong Club

Tuggeranong recently hosted the Australian Defence Force Cycling Club for their annual National Championships. This year they have added BMX to the program in conjunction with the Mountain Biking and Road and Track disciplines. This event saw 20+ defence personnel race three motos, a semi-final, a final and invitational final.

• The club has held discussions with providers about installing lights at the track. The aim is to provide more options for practice and racing.• The club has secured round 6 of the national series next year on September 15/16, this is going to be a great event with classes now open from 8 years and only 3 rounds to qualify. This will be the pinnacle of racing in Canberra.• Tuggeranong have some plans in place to further the upgrades that have already seen the building of our new track

which was opened before the ACT championships this year. • Tuggeranong Club member Mark Bell was the runner up of the ACT Volunteer awards earlier in the year and Club President Paul Stewart was a finalist in the Vikings Sports awards earlier this year.

BMXNSW DirectorsChairman: Martin WardExecutive Director: Lorraine DunkleyDirector Development: Paula GriffithsDirector Test Team: Peter JaehneDirector Marketing: Alex BainyDirector Finance: Michael CraigDirector Events: Sarah DavisDirector Racing: Bluey Seaton

There has been significant change in the board with four new directors in the past 12 months. The latest additions to the board are Bluey Seaton and Sarah Davis. Sarah Davis joins the board as Director of Events and is well qualified to do this role. She is super organised and process driven with excellent management skills. Sarah has the ability to bring everyone on the same journey, she creates an inclusive culture where all people feel engaged and are able to contribute. Sarah managed the Pre-State Titles and Test Team dinner for us in June, she also organised the State Titles in October so is already contributing big time to the sport.

Bluey Seaton will manage the Racing portfolio. He is a former president of the Castle Hill club so brings great knowledge of how things work from a club perspective. Bluey is already running our events as Race Director however, this role will now give him the ability to work on the strategic direction of BMX in NSW. Bluey will work closely with BMX Australia in the presentation

of the National Series event in Penrith in February next year. This is the first ever event under the new format and its fantastic that he will be able to contribute.

Unfortunately Bill Dunkley the NSW SOD and long time member of BMXNSW (over 30 years) passed away earlier this year. Bill had an amazing personality and a wealth of experience, he loved the sport and was a hugely important member of our team. Working with the Dunkley family we have created Bill Dunkley perpetual trophies for the officials of the year, these were presented to our male and female officials of the year at our State Titles dinner but the Dunkley family.

Although we do have some great officials in NSW we don’t yet have anyone who is able to step into the SOD role. Until we find someone to move into this space Gary Pettett the SOD from ACT has agreed to help us out.

RacingAll State run Open and Series race events have been standardised across NSW. Start, finish times are the same, practice times and groups are the same, staging layout and process is also the same. Riders, parents and officials

know what to expect and when to expect it. This has now given us a strong base upon which to look at the event in its entirety. We’re putting a stronger focus on the total experience and looking for ways to make racing interesting and fun for non-BMX spectators. This is just started however, we’ve started addressing the look and feel of our events to make them more visually appealing, we’re actively working to make commentary more relevant for non-BMXers and we’re looking at better ways of interleaving commentary with music as a method for enhancing mood.

FinanceBMXNSW finances remain in good shape. We appointed a Finance director last year to uplift our processes and to drive through a Finance strategy where the money coming in is spent in the right

2017 BMX Annual Report 20

areas. This year has been about gathering information on current processes and practices and we’re expecting to introduce some changes next year as the strategy starts to take shape.

New initiatives in 2017Two new initiatives were introduced into NSW at the beginning of 2017 with the aim of improving the experience for our members. We introduced late entry capability for first time this year, entries for our events close the Sunday prior to the event but we now allow late entries on the Monday which costs a extra $20. This still allows clubs enough time to prepare the Sprocket trophies and get the money from the bank for the prize money. The second initiate was to remove the registration process completely. All riders are considered registered for the event unless we are explicitly told otherwise. Three immediate benefits to this have been observed:

All members are pleased they do not need to lie up for registration

The stress on the score shed has dropped considerably, they now have plenty of time to manage any issues and they are always ready in good time with sheets printed ready for racing.

There are less transponder issues during racing as riders are now using the transponder checking station to see if they have been entered in the right race. This means more riders are checking their transponders and issues are being picked up prior to racing.

Test TeamThe Test Team program lead by Peter Jaehne is really turning into a smooth operation. Peter is an keen organiser and it’s his preparation that makes both the Australian leg and the NZ leg of the competition a huge success. The Test Team as a product is well presented, the riders have an awesome experience that will stay with them and they also become immortalised on the trophy which contains some high profile riders from both sides of ‘the ditch’. Although the focus of

this initiative is on using BMX to facilitate cultural exchange and build friendships there is no doubt the big prize is the trophy. We’re extremely pleased that we won both the boys and the girls test team trophy in the October race at the North Island Titles in New Zealand.

Club updateSan Remo club on the Central coast is our newest club and is growing fast with great facilities and infrastructure. Manly club is back on the BMX circuit with the first race in eight years. Bathurst club produced some great racing action for the BMXA races and showed what an awesome track it is. Sydney club held their first ever State series event which was a great success. Macarthur club ran the State Titles and pre-State Titles this year and proved once again you don’t need a big track to run a big event. Unfortunately, Liverpool club had to close after traces of asbestos were found in the area.

2017 BMX Annual Report 22

2017 has been both a year of achievement and tragedy for Queensland. The beginning of the year showed the strength and endurance of our members with the onslaught of Cyclone Debbie that devastated more than 2/3 of the Queensland coast with torrential rain, flooding and high winds effecting no less than 12 of our 35 clubs and track facilities. The areas stretched from Proserpine in the north down to Beenleigh in the south and inland through Moranbah and Central Queensland. The worse effected areas of Proserpine, Walkerston and Mackay Clubs have only just, in the last month, started club night racing for the year, with Proserpine, 8 months after the cyclone, still running on temporary lights and generators. The rebuild of our Queensland BMX community has been long, hard and exhausting and the strength and heart of the communities banding together to assist their neighbouring clubs rebuild and strengthening their partnerships, is nothing short of exemplary.

The first achievement of the 2017 was only 4 days after Cyclone Debbie hit the coast, Cairns BMX Club hosted Round 4 of the BMXA National Series successfully with all the challenges that come with flooding and wet weather issues. Needless to say, no obstacle was too big, all issues where worked around, through or over to produce a great event. The second was 3 weeks later BMX QLD, at the Sleeman Sports Complex, hosted a very successful 2017 BMX Australia National Championships with a lot of the Queensland volunteers coming to Brisbane to volunteer who still didn’t have electricity or in some cases running water on at their own homes. It was a welcome break for them to have running

water and a hot shower.

MembershipDue to economic issues and the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie early in 2017, BMX Queensland membership has stabilised with only a small growth percentage. As previously noted, many of our clubs have had a late start to their racing calendar and rebuilding is still taking place. 2018 should see all clubs back up and running and with the opportunity to hold their NSOD and Come n Try days again.

DevelopmentBMX Qld have supported 5 Beginner Coach Courses and 1 Level 1 Coaching course during 2017 and 3 Level 2 Officials courses completed and 1 more scheduled for later this year. 4 regional camps and 1 development camp with in excess of 400 riders attending, covering athletes state wide.

State TitlesThe BMX Queensland State Championships was held in the tropical north this year in Townsville, hosted by Townsville BMX Club. I huge event and it was great for BMX Qld to have the State Titles in the north again. Congratulations to Townsville BMX Club committee and members who provided BMX Qld with a first class facility. Within excess of 1500 entries over 3 categories of racing it was a fantastic event with near perfect weather all week and a great crowd of spectators. BMX Queensland would like to sincerely thank and acknowledge the 70+ officials and volunteers who gave their time to make the State Titles a success, and the riders who made the State Titles the premier event for Queensland in 2017. They displayed and upheld the BMX Qld RIDE core values,

RespectIntegrity

DedicationEnjoyment

Finally, a huge thank you to the hard working Board and Staff of BMX Queensland. It is a great team effort and everyone has great passion for our sport of BMX. Congratulations on a fantastic 2017 and I’m looking forward to working with you all in 2018.

GovernanceThe Board of BMX SA has focused on ensuring clubs are mindful of their responsibilities from a governance perspective. With a new state Constitution being ratified at our last AGM we have worked with the clubs to ensure they are adapting their own constitutions to match. We have worked with the clubs to provide them with a greater understanding of legislation, rules and their responsibility to up-hold these.

South Australia has one of the most structured and compulsory responses to child safety in the country. All clubs must complete a Child Safe Compliance Statement with the State body also being required to have policy and procedures in place. As an issue close to my heart through my ‘normal’ work I am pleased with the progress we have made at State level. We are the only sport to have a dedicated Member Protection Officer at State level, this role operates independently from our board. This has been invaluable in determining who is responsible for what and what actions we may take. It provides members with an unbiased and safe method of raising any concerns relating to children and allows the board time to ensure decision-making is fair and reasonable at all times. The primary objective is to ensure children have a safe and welcoming environment to pursue their chosen sport. We are working with our clubs to up-skill their Child Protection Officers to ensure consistency across all areas.

RidersWe have been working hard to implement programs that work alongside and support the changes in the structure of BMXA. This has necessitated re-negotiating the terms of the current grant for coaches and talented athletes. We have moved to a selection process with clear guidelines in order to encourage and support the talented young athletes in our state. We have self-funded a program that involves collegiate support and access to higher level coaching for those riders who are ‘on the cusp’, or outside the grant age range. Whilst the financial support is minimal, we hope to secure funding in the future to further support these athletes.

CoachingAll clubs now boast at least one beginner coach, with many having accredited level one coaches at club training. There have been several coaching courses over the past month, both beginner and level one, with interest being high and the sessions well-attended. This benefits both clubs and riders, provided structured sessions based on skill development. We have also utilised our level one coaches to provide sessions for the State Team training and for the Growth and Development sessions.

With the resignation of the State Coaching Director, we have had to modify programming to work with the limited time that people are able to commit to assisting. We have a Coaching Conference booked for January with Luke Madill being kind enough to come and present for us.

OfficialsWe have continued to develop our level 1 and level 2 officials through training and mentoring, particularly at State events. Our SOD has worked hard to ensure all officials have the opportunity to try new roles and develop their skills in known ones.

We ran a successful Level 2 training course and Officials conference, with Paul Connors attending and presenting as the National Officiating Director. This was well attended and well received. Feedback from this inaugural event was extremely positive and we are hoping to run a conference yearly.

I am proud of the progress we have made in the last 12 months and hope we can continue to build our sport and inspire our BMX community as we move forward.

This year has been busy we were included in the Australian Masters Games which saw riders from across the nation participate, and the feedback from participants was fantastic everyone enjoying their Tasmanian experience. We have just concluded our State Titles which has seen a slight increase in participation with almost every state represented. The block format is increasingly popular allowing participants to enter both classes and I believe this will allow continued growth; our entries have doubled in the last 2 years.

We are yet to implement our coaching presenter accessor training as we have set guidelines for participants and these are currently being processed. We are continuing to develop a succession plan with all directors’ roles but this is a difficult task with relatively new to the sport members.

The allocation of the National Series to the Tasmanian host club has met with mixed response from the membership and lots of questions for and against, the most raised question being the validity of airport location being the deciding factor considering recent national Championship

venues over recent years. We are extremely excited by the future potential that an event like the National Series can do for the profile of the sport here. Our membership figures continue to fluctuate, I put this down to a unusual weather pattern that has not been seen in Tasmania for some years.

We look forward to 2018 and continuing to build the sport brick by brick.

BMX VIC STATE REPORTIt is my pleasure to present the annual report for BMX Victoria for 2017. Firstly, I would like to thank all members of the Board for your tireless efforts and dedication behind the scenes which goes largely unnoticed. Your professional governance and the time you dedicate to the sport ensures that BMX in Victoria continues to move in the right direction.

Big thanks must also be extended to our Event Management Group (EMG) which is comprised of a number of different member club representatives. With more events added to the calendar this year, it was always going to be a busy year, but your expertise and commitment to planning each event and the annual calendar have been first class. Additionally, the support BMXV receives from volunteers from clubs and the BMX community is unparalleled.

At every BMX race or event in Victoria, a countless number of volunteers are giving up their time to perform a variety of roles and to ensure each event runs smoothly. Thank you for your continued support and efforts.

To all the clubs who provide opportunities for riders to learn, practice and develop their BMX skills on a weekly basis, we thank you for helping provide a safe, fun and family-friendly environment for our riders, volunteers and spectators. As a sport, it’s our responsibility to ensure that at all events and club activities we uphold a high standard of behavior so everyone can feel safe and enjoy the time they spend at a track.

Finally, a big thank you must be reserved for all the parents, family and support staff who make it possible for our junior riders to

participate in events and who help inspire our younger generation to get involved in our great sport!

As an organization, BMXV is continually striving for growth and as our Registrar report regularly suggests, we have a significant capacity to attract new riders and members to our clubs. With this in mind, BMXV implemented a number of initiatives and programs this year with an aim to increase total membership numbers, event entries, coach and official numbers and grassroots BMX participation. This includes scheduling additional Come and Try days for clubs, development of a club development model that equips clubs with resources to engage in their own community exposure activities, provision of additional coaching and official courses and the delivery of the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships (VSCC) and our grassroots participation program, Pumped.

2017 has been an exciting and eventful year for BMX in Victoria.

2017 BMX Annual Report 26

We have welcomed Casey Fields BMX Club as our latest affiliated club. The club is the first BMX racing facility in the City of Casey and will provide infrastructure that will enable State and National competitions. We look forward to holding race days and events at the new facilities. In February, we ran the 2017 Interclub Challenge at Ballarat with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital. It was a fantastic event and BMXV were very proud to donate $3000 to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. BMXV would like to thank everyone involved in the RCH Interclub Challenge for their generous support of this worthy cause.

An important aspect of BMXV’s strategic plan is to increase grassroots participation in the sport of BMX and to drive novice membership growth. We have been lucky enough to again gain funding from VicHealth to support

our grassroots participation program, Pumped. The program which is to be rolled out from October onwards aims to introduce as many kids to the sport of BMX and in turn introduce them to local clubs and membership options. This year BMXV was very excited to throw our support behind the State Governments #ChangeOurGame Initiative, which encourages girls and women to participate in sport and to ensure that all sports are inclusive, equal and respected. As an organization, we are exploring ways that we can increase female participation in our sport and increase the number of female BMX coaches and officials, which is an exciting step. Looking forward to the remainder of this year we have our marquee event, the 2017 Planet BMXV State Championships at Wyndham BMX club. With hundreds of riders expected to attend and the return of the big screen with live streaming it promises to be a great event.

Once again, thank you all for your support over the last year and I look forward to continuing working closing with you all to further strengthen all aspects of BMX in Victoria.

The 2016 – 2017 year was another great year in BMX. With continued support from WestCycle and the Department of Sport, we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their ongoing assistance throughout the year. Not only the shared office space, and meeting rooms made available throughout the year, even on the weekends, but the shared resources and guidance in dealing with media situations that arose, along with High Performance strategy, and looking forward, possible future facility development as well.

EVENTSAnother full calendar of events this year, kicking off the year with WA riders heading east to compete in round 1 of the BMX Australia National Series held in Nerang Queensland. BMX Australia combined 4 x rounds of the National Series with a newly formed Grands Assault Challenge in 2017. Travel took WA riders to Shepparton, Bathurst and Cairns for those rounds, and then saw the BMX Australia National Championships head back to Sleeman Sports Centre, in Chandler Queensland.

On the local scene, the first round of a 10 round BMXWA State Series started at Southern Districts BMX Club, heading around the State for other rounds and concluding at Westside BMX Club in Balcatta. Each of the 10 rounds attracted over 400 entries. Transponder timing systems are now used for all BMXWA events, with over 80% of all scored riders having their own transponder to allow the use of electronic timing equipment for each event.

With the purchase of a new finish line camera system early in 2016, in line with the equipment used at

National level, we have now had it in operation for a full season. The new system allows live finish line results to be recorded at speeds far greater than we have been able to do in the past, and in conjunction with the transponder timing equipment, if we have a photo finish in any race, determining the outcome is just a click of a button away.

State Championships saw another record being broken, with over 800 entries recorded at the time of online event registration closing. The event was held at Southside BMX Club in Bullcreek over 3 days in October. At the request of the clubs, BMXWA trialled a new tent allocation system for this year, with final reports yet to come in on how this went, but initial discussions saw clubs, and members happy with this new process, which allowed them to set up prior to the event. This process reduced the angst and competition for a position on the day of the event.

We will again head back to Adventure World to close the year out with our annual awardsceremony, celebrating all the hard work that athletes have put in over the season of our State Super Series events. Some 300 plus trophies will be handed out on the day. With over 600 tickets sold last year, we are predicting this will be

a bigger event this year.

We look forward to the BMX Australia National Championships heading west to the Bunbury BMX Club in March 2018. This will be a fantastic opportunity for WA riders to come up against the best in the country on home ground.

CLUB DEVELOPMENTVolunteers and Officials was again a major focus for 2016-2017. Continuing on with the online volunteer job event registration, this saw every round of the BMXWA Super Series positions filled prior to the event. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the many volunteers over the season for their time and assistance at events, without you we could not run the events. With around 60 volunteer roles needed at each event, this is a fantastic effort from everyone. We have been working closely with BMX Australia and our clubs to ensure volunteer accreditations remain current and up to date. States, Clubs and individual members are now be able to check up to date lists of current accredited officials at all levels.

COACHING With ongoing updates and improvements to the Beginner Coaching Course we have seen another 15 coaches complete the beginner coaching course. Another great addition to our pool of coaches around the state.A Level 1 Coaching course is planned for the end of 2017, which will see around 10 coaches’ upskill their accreditation to take on a higher level of training and allow them to coach and develop a wider range of athletes.Coaching has become a major part of our clubs, some of which have training and coaching sessions

most days of the week, apart from racing days. The use of a BMX facility is now far greater than it has been in the past, with additional coaches now being able to service clubs and athletes at all levels.

Junior Development Program and Coach mentoring was a new initiative introduced later in 2017. This would allow the 12-13 year old riders an insight into what is required in regards to training schedules, future selection to State Squads, and how to handle nerves at big events like State Championships. In conjunction with this it also gave some of our beginner coaches the opportunity to work alongside our senior level coaches and gain valuable skills and understanding in their training and coaching skills. We hope to continue and expand the Junior Development Program and Coach Mentoring in the future.

ELECTRONIC MEDIA Continuing use of electronic media, BMXWA maintains Facebook as a key platform for member communication. To date we have 1544 ‘likes’ to the page which is a 30% increase from the same time last year. We continue to see the most popular following is from ages between 35-44 years of age. The split of overall followers from

all age groups is divided as 44% female and 56% male. The BMXWA Squad has also recently set up an Instagram page, to give an insight into the activities, events and training sessions throughout the year.

Race day videos of the State Championships and Super Series are being posted on You Tube to the Perth BMX Channel. BMX Sports WA is also active on Twitter with 125 followers to date.Official photographs are available from perthbmx.com

ATHLETE DEVELOPMENTThe BMXWA State Athlete Development and High Performance Squad program continues to grow and gain support. With another 25 athletes being selected over both groups for 2016-2017. The State Coach – Jade McPherson was appointed in October 2016, along with advisory group members John Bennetts and Shari Callum as part of the new state strategy guidelines. With travel to events in the Eastern States being a big part and cost of the squad year, athletes were offered the option of group travel. This saves costs to parents and guardians as the athletes travel with the state coach to events. The group were fortunate enough

at the beginning of the season to take part in a training camp at Sleeman Sports Centre in Queensland, and had access to the brand new recovery centre with hot and cold recovery pools on the list of items at the camp.

A very large contingent of not only Australian, but (33) WA riders were selected for the World Championships, held in Rockhill, USA in July/August. Congratulations to all WA riders that attended. Some of our riders bought home world plates, and for those that did not or narrowly missed out, the experience alone at this level of event was well worth the trip. Lauren Reynolds our highest ranked female WA rider again placed in the top 8 at the World Championships. Lauren has also placed again in the top 10 female Elite Women riders in the world on the UCI rankings for the 2017 season.

BMX MINI WHEELERSBMX Mini-Wheelers are continuing to grow from strength to strength. We currently have 283registered Mini Wheelers in WA, aged from 2-4 years. The transition from a balance bike (Mini-Wheeler) to a pedal bike within months of learning has increased the skill of these little riders remarkably. They are the grassroots of our sports, and the increase, as well as enormous input from parents at this level is fantastic. We continue to see our sport grow and grow with the introduction of this class only a few years ago.
