A Stronger Tomorrow

The helping hand of a direct support professional, the enthusiastic response of a teacher, a first smile, first steps; each and every day something special happens at Jawonio. We have a passion for our work, and purpose-driven care. We bring

a unique set of skills in providing quality services to our children and adults with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges and special needs. In 1947 our founders were looking for a place that would give their child an opportunity to play, socialize and live up to their full potential. Today, we continue to provide hope and add meaning to the quality of life to more than 5000 individuals throughout the communities we serve. 2010 was a year that found us humbled and grateful for the honors we received in recogntion of our staff and the services we provide. From an invitation to the White House, to an opportunity to present our work on an international stage, Jawonio was truly humbled by this recognition. We have increased our social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIN. Our pride is showing!!

On a programmatic level, this past year is filled with wonderful memories and successful outcomes. Our programs, however, cannot be sustained without a stable financial infrastructure. Currently, Jawonio is on stable ground, however, we are under tremendous pressure and short term pain due to the cuts we faced in this year’s budget. In response to this, we have taken proactive steps to meet these challenges and withstood $1million dollars in cuts last year and almost double that amount in 2011. These funding cuts are far deeper and more far reaching than originally thought. We do however, wish to thank our NYS elected officials, Senator David Carlucci and NYS Assemblymembers Ellen Jaffee, Ken Zebrowski, Nancy Calhoun and Annie Rabbit for their advocacy efforts on our behalf. Government funding on both the state and federal level is either being dramatically cut back or removed all together. Federal earmarks and state member items are dwindling down. Medicaid and Medicare cuts will hurt our consumers and our services in the coming years. Now more than ever, Jawonio’s fiscal strength is going to depend on YOU...our friends, families and supporters.

The good news in all of this remains the adherence to our mission, our committment to providing high quality services and our ability to meet the ever-growing needs of those most vulnerable in our community will not waver. Our Senior Team, Board of Directors and Foundation Board are currently working to generate new sources of revenue and developing creative initiatives to support our services. By empowering each other, and investing in what works, we will build on our strengths, seek out new business opportunities and engage more families. We must move forward together. For a stronger tomorrow, please consider honoring a friend or loved one today. Donations can also be made online at www.jawonio.org or send gifts to The Jawonio Foundation, 260 N. Little Tor Road, New City. Thank you.

Our drop ins are located in Mt Vernon, Ossining and Yonkers, NY. Activities include: self-help group meetings, group meals, weekly or monthly socials or parties, social/recreational excursions, consumer speakers’ bureau, individual advocacy, systems advocacy, referral bank for mental health services, computer access and training & employment servicesSatisfaction rates for our participants range from 95% to 100%. Wills, Trusts and Gift Annuities The Jawonio Foundation was established to further our mission and to ensure that we will continue to provide high quality programs and services to people with disabilities. The Jawonio Foundation is building brighter tomorrows through an endowment that will provide long term, ongoing aditional income for existing underfunded programs, supplemental funding for expansion of services and special assistance funding to address the unfunded needs of individuals. Growing the Foundation will enable us to become more financially independent and ultimately better able to fulfill our mission far into the future. Meet your financial, tax, insurance or estate planning objectives while providing critical support or children and adults with disabilities. There are many ways to make a planned gift; your gift will help sustain our Foundation for years to come.

Don’t know how to give? Looking to give stock? Interested in a Charitable Gift Annuity? Have you considered contributing to the Jawonio Pooled Income Trust or a Supplemental Needs Trust for your loved one?

Please consider making Jawonio a beneficiary in your will, insurance or estate plan. For more information on planned giving at Jawonio please contact Irene Goldstein in our Foundation office at 845.708.2000 x1329 or via email at [email protected]. Thank you.

Jawonio would also like to thank our friends in the media: WCBS News, PATCH. COM, News12, The Journal News and WRCR radio for sharing our stories with the community and the world.
