2) Open lectures and workshops for students
This year we had three lectures from visiting lecturers on various
biophotonic technologies. Our colleagues from ITMO University gave an open lecture on March 22. Attendees were able to get acquainted not only with the most advanced developments of video capillaroscopy, but also learn about the application of photonics methods in the study of F.M. Dostoevsky’s legacy.
June 28 Prof. Andrey Abramov (University College London, UK) visited us with the lecture “Study of the cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration by the method of fluorescent imaging analysis - the role of reactive oxygen
12
species, mitochondria and calcium”. It was very interesting lecture; students raised their awareness in the field of biology and photonics.
September 18 there was an open lecture given by visiting lecturer Kirill Larin, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston. The topic of the open lecture was “Structural and Functional Imaging of Tissues with Optical Coherence Tomography/Elastography”.

3) Lectures for pupils of local schools
We have held lectures and seminars for students of local schools and
university students on the basics of optics and photonics and their use in
everyday life on March 12-13 and April 9-10. These activities were carried out
as part of the 2017 SPIE Education Outreach grant. It was a terrific experience
for all of us. We were not only able to give some knowledge to students, but
they also taught us a lot.
13
Professional Development Events
1) New skill competition “Biophotonics” during the Second
University WorldSkills Championship “OGUSKILLS2018”
On the International Day of Light our center and our Chapter have
presented the new skill competition “Biophotonics” during the Second
University WorldSkills Championship “OGUSKILLS2018”. During this event
university students competed in their knowledge and skills in biomedical
photonics. Chapter members participated in championship and won a
diploma!

2) Weekly scientific seminars of Chapter members
Once a week, Chapter members gather to discuss the progress of our
research work. It helps to develop the skills of scientific presentation and
communication, reveal the pros and cons of our work, inspire us with new
ideas and overcome the fear of future performances with an unfamiliar
audience.
Chapter’s popularization & collaboration
1) Student Chapters presentation during SPIE Photonics
Europe 2018
Chapter members Elena Zharkikh, Ksenia Kandurova, Igor Kozlov and
Irina Makovik have presented our Chapter activities during SPIE Photonics
Europe 2018. We have acquired many new acquaintances from student
Chapters from around the world.
15
2) Participation of Chapter members and advisor in a radio program
Our team was invited to the radio (Radio Russia, 102.3 FM, program
“Radio lounge”)! Among other questions, we told what opportunities students
have in the field of optics and photonics and how our Chapter can help them to
develop themselves in this field.
16
3) Inter-Chapter communications
We actively interact with other student Chapters, sharing our
experiences and ideas. This year two joint scientific events were organized
with ITMO University Chapter, our Chapter members visited Optical museum
and had a lab tour in the laboratory of terahertz optics. Our Chapter president
Elena Zharkikh participated in several education outreach activities together
with University of Oulu Chapter during her exchange visit there.

4) Chapter meeting with the governor of the Orel region
and cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin
Cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin and governor of the Orel region have
visited Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics of Orel
State University named after I.S. Turgenev during the Second University
WorldSkills Championship “OGUSKILLS2018” (where our chapters presented
the new skill competition “Biophotonics”).
The meeting was very interesting for us, we presented our Chapter and
told about our activities. Chapter members asked a lot of questions about
space and life on the ISS.
18
Social activities
19
In addition to organizing and participating in various educational,
scientific and near-science events, we also enjoy the time spent together by
our friendly team. The Chapter holds informal meetings once a week, where
we gather over a cup of tea or organize an on-site scientific seminar in city
cafes.
Here are some photos from the celebration of the International Day of
Light, a barbecue party dedicated to the Chapter’s member Viva, a New Year's
party with gifts from the secret Santa, a celebration of Science Day and
Women's Day in Science, our Chapter birthday.
As one can see from these photos, we can not only be controlled with
optical systems and mathematical processing, but also cook excellent cakes!
20
Scientific activities
21
Students of our Chapter are actively involved in research activities in
the field of biomedical photonics. This year we had plenty of reports at various
scientific conferences both in Russia and abroad. Students presented their
work at poster sessions and made oral presentations as well. Among the
most inspiring experiences there are participation in conferences organized
by SPIE: Photonics Europe (Strasbourg, France) and Photonics West (San
Francisco, USA).
We are proud of our colleagues who have received awards for best
student reports at various conferences!
22
Planned activities for the future
We are planning different activities in three important areas:
Science, Outreach and Professional Development.
In terms of scientific activity, Chapter members are planning to
present a lot of reports at various conferences around the world.
This will allow us to acquaint scientists and students from different
countries with our Chapter and its activities, meet new people, and
establish contacts with representatives of other student chapters.
We are planning to continue the pace of previous years. We will
conduct popular scientific lectures on optics and photonics,
interdisciplinary seminars with specialists from different fields of
optical technology, invite leading scientists in optics and photonics.
An important part of the work is the spread of optics and photonics
awareness among pupils of all age groups. In this regard, we will
continue to show them interesting optical experiments and tell the
basics of optics and photonics at various science fairs and during
lectures in local schools.
