PRESENTATION #1
Dr. S.K. Ghosh Ph.D.
Dr. S. K. Ghosh, President, S. K. Ghosh Associates Inc., Palatine, IL, is known interna-
tionally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provi-
sions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous commit-
tees and advisory panels.
He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant de-
sign, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures.
Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ACI and
PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, the Masonry Stan-
dards Joint Committee, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads
for Buildings and Other Structures).
He just completed a term as a member of the Board of Direction of ACI and a term as a
member of the Board of Direction of EERI (Earthquake Engineering Research Institute).
In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has in-
vestigated and reported on structural performance in most recent earthquakes.

Susan Dowty, S.E.
Ms. Susan Dowty, Vice President, S. K. Ghosh Associates Inc., Aliso Viejo, CA, received
her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in
1984 and her Master of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach in
1990.
She is a registered civil and structural engineer in the State of California and has over
twenty years experience in the administration and development of the Uniform Building
Code provisions.
She has played an active role in the development of structural provisions for the Interna-
tional Building Code, serving as the Structural Committee Secretariat. She has also been
instrumental in the development of a number of structural engineering related publica-
tions produced by ICC and SKGA.
She served as the consultant for the reformat of the ASCE 7-05 seismic provisions and
has recently completed her four-year term on the California Building Standards Commis-
sion.

Historic University Library
Stephen Metz P.E., LEED AP
Stephen Metz, PE, LEED AP is a principal at Shelley Metz
Baumann Hawk (SMBH). With over 15 years of experience, Metz
has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State
University and is a registered professional engineer in eight
states.
Metz is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Ameri-
can Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), American Institute
of Steel Construction (AISC), American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE), Structural Engineers Association of Ohio (SEAoO) and Tilt-
Up Concrete Association (TCA).
His previous experience with a full-service architectural firm pro-
vides Stephen with the skills required to produce well coordi-
nated construction documents. He has designed new buildings
as well as additions and renovations to existing structures using
all conventional building materials for various building types.
His prior experience includes material testing, inspection, survey-
ing, construction documentation, analysis of existing structures,
expert witness testimony, and use of design software.

Barry Arnold P.E., S.E., SECB
Since his graduation with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from
for Utah State University in 1989 and a M.S. degree in 1991
with an emphasis in structural engineering, Barry has been a
practicing consulting structural engineer for 21 years and seen
the landscape of the profession change dramatically.
He has served on the Board of the Structural Engineers Associa-
tion of Utah (SEAU) for 5 consecutive years. He was selected
president of the SEAU in 2004. He currently serves the struc-
tural engineering profession as: the SEAU’s delegate to NCSEA;
a member of AISC’s NASCC Conference Committee; Co-chair of
the SEAU’s Structural Licensing Committee; and a Member of
the NCSEA’s Structural Licensing Committee;
Barry received the highest honor awarded a professional engi-
neer in Utah by being selected as the Engineer of the Year by
the Utah Engineers Council in 2007.
He is a co-owner and vice-president of ARW Engineers and has
had the privilege of working on many notable projects.
Barry is a licensed professional engineer in 35 states and 4 Ca-
nadian Provinces.

for Structural Engineers
Paula M. Selvaggio RPLU
Paula M. Selvaggio is CEO and President of Selvaggio, Teske & Associates
with responsibility for overall management of the company. For over 25
years Paula has focused her career on professional liability insurance. She
recommends insurance programs, provides in-house education programs,
contract review services and loss prevention consultation to architects and
engineers. She has been a licensed property and casualty insurance agent
in Ohio since 1984 and received her RPLU designation in 2004.
Paula makes frequent presentations to various professional associations
and to college and university classes on a variety of risk management top-
ics.
Currently she serves as the Immediate Past President of PLAN, the Profes-
sional Liability Agents Network, a select group of insurance agencies spe-
cializing in risk management and loss prevention programs for architects,
engineers and environmental consultants.
Paula is a member of the following professional organizations:

Understanding Ethics
for Structural Engineers
Eric A. Teske is Executive Vice President of Selvaggio, Teske & Associates, with
responsibility for the company’s finance and information systems along with
client service and sales for Ohio and West Virginia. Eric is based in STA’s Cincin-
nati office, which he opened in 1990. As a dedicated professional liability spe-
cialist with 25 years in the A / E industry, Eric provides insurance programs, in-
house education programs, contract review services and loss prevention consul-
tation to architects, engineers and environmental professionals.
Prior to forming STA, Eric served as the financial officer of a medium-sized engi-
neering and architecture firm. He has a Bachelor of Architecture from the Uni-
versity of Notre Dame and an MBA Finance from Indiana University. He is a li-
censed property and casualty insurance agent in Ohio.
Eric frequently presents risk management topics to design professionals and
students at various professional associations and university programs. In addi-
tion, he has participated in association sub committees and task forces dealing
with various risk management and loss prevention issues. He also served as the
associate member of the AIA Ohio Board of Directors.
Eric is a member of the following organizations: Associate Member American
Institute of Architects (AIA), Professional Liability Agents Network (PLAN), Society

Bridge Design Innovations:
US versus European Practice
Dennis R. Mertz PhD., P.E.
Professor Mertz is the Director of the University of Delaware’s (UD) Cen-
ter for Innovative Bridge Engineering (CIBrE) as well as a Professor of
Civil Engineering. Prior to his appointment at the University of Dela-
ware, he was an Associate of the bridge-design firm of Modjeski and
Masters, Inc.
As co-principal investigator of the National Cooperative Highway Re-
search Program (NCHRP) Project 12-33, Professor Mertz was one of the
original authors of the 1st edition of the American Association of State
Highway and Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) LRFD Bridge Design
Specifications. As a consultant to AASHTO, he continues to author an-
nual interim changes to the LRFD Specifications. In addition, Professor
Mertz has written bridge-design manuals for Montana, South Carolina
and Nevada, and is completing bridge manuals for Oklahoma and
Alaska as well.
Professor Mertz was the recipient of the inaugural AASHTO Bridge Sub-
committee Chairman’s Lecture Series Award in June 2000, “honoring
you for your many contributions to this subcommittee and to the field of
bridge engineering…to recognize and thank you for helping us advance
LRFD theory and modern bridge design practices.”

Examples of Structural Failures
Howard J. Hill Ph.D., S.E.
After receiving a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Illinois
in 1982, Mr. Hill worked for 2.5 years as a staff structural engineer with
Bechtel Power Corporation in Los Angeles, California.
In 1985, Mr. Hill returned to the University of Illinois and obtained Masters
of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in structural engineering; af-
ter which he joined the firm of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE),
where he is currently employed as the Director of Project Operations.
Since joining WJE, Dr. Hill’s work has focused on structural engineering in-
vestigations related primarily to problems with existing construction.

Chile Earthquake
and Seismic Performance
of Lap Splices in Concrete Shear Walls
Santiago Pujol P.E., S.E.
Santiago Pujol is an Assistant Professor at Purdue University. He re-
ceived his Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering in 1996 from Na-
tional University of Colombia, and continued his education at Purdue
University where he received his Masters of Science in 1997 and his
PhD in 2002.
His research interests include Earthquake engineering, seismic vulner-
ability of existing structures, displacement-based seismic design, instru-
mentation and testing of structures, response of structures to impulsive
loads, structural-health monitoring, repair and strengthening of struc-
tures.
Mr. Pujol is the recipient of the Roy E. & Myrna Wansik Teaching Award
for Outstanding Teaching in a Core Course in Civil Engineering in 2009,
the Edmund M. Burke Outstanding Civil Engineering Professor Award in
2008, the AISC IDEAS2 Presidential Award of Excellence in 2008
(awarded to the design engineers of the seismic strengthening program
for San Francisco's State Bar of California Building), and the Ross Fel-
lowship, Purdue University, 2001-2002.
