CUDDALORE DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF TAMIL NADU FOR THE YEAR: 2007-08

I. District Profiles
i) Geographical Location of the District
Cuddalore District lies between15° 5 /11° 11” and 12° 35” of the
northern latitude and 78° 38” and 80° 0” eastern longitude with an area of
3678 sq. The District was formerly known as South Arcot. The District was
bifurcated on 30th September 1993 as Cuddalore and Villupuram District.
Cuddalore District is bounded on the East by the Bay of Bengal and on the
South by Nagapattinam and Ariyalur District. from which it is separated by the
Kollidanm and Velllar rivers respectively and on the West and north by
Villupuram District. All the rivers of the District flows from west to east into the
Bay of Bengal. The rivers in the District are Thenpennaiyar, Kedilam, Vellar,
Manimuthar and Kollidam. Most of the rivers are dry and flooded only during
the Monsoon periods.
ii) Climatic conditions, rainfall seasons etc.
The district has peculiar climate and receives rainfall in all the seasons,
which represent 31008.00 mm in 2007-2008. The maximum precipitation is
contributed by the North East Monsoon 16711.40 mm followed by the South
west monsoon 7547.80 mm.

III) Demographic data
i). As per the census-2001, the total population of Cuddalore District is 22,85,395 of which
male account for 11,50,908 and female account for 11,34,487. The SC/ST population in the
District is 6.45 lakhs. The density of population is 621 per sq.km. The total literate
percentage is 62.15%.

VI. Employment Status
i) Employment in agriculture
The District depends upon monsoon rain for irrigation purpose. The
major period of the agricultural works takes place only during the
monsoon period. However the nos. of employed are 4,49,204
ii) Employment in Animal Husbandry
The income from agriculture is inadequate to the farmers. Hence they
