Lot 1 Alyson Shotz Black Fold #7, 2017 Hand crushed and painted aluminum with painted steel base 32 x 24 x 20 in. (81.3 x 60.1 x 50.8 cm) Black Fold #7, a lively monochromatic sculpture by artist Alyson Shotz, is part of the artist’s Black Fold series, which she describes:

…comes out of my long-standing interest in folding, and the potential energy that is created by folding a flat sheet of material. The Black Fold sculptures are inspired by the notion of matter being crushed inside of a black hole or neutron star. This series began with folded metal origami-inspired sculptures, but as I progressed, I became more interested in crumpling and crushing, which I see as a chaotic form of folding. I fold and crush and unfold and re-crush these sculptures many times, changing the inherent malleability of the metal and its shape. The crumpled folds are created by force and the materiality of the metal itself. I don’t control or predetermine their shape.

Shotz’s Mirror Fence, 2003 (refabricated 2014), is part of Storm King’s permanent collection and is one of the Art Center’s most celebrated works. It was featured in Storm King’s 50th Anniversary exhibition, 5+5: New Perspectives, in 2010. Shotz was commissioned to make a permanent work at Stanford University, Three Fold, 2013, that hangs from the second floor ceiling of the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge. She has also been commissioned to make site-specific sculptures for private collections and public spaces, and her work is found in numerous major museums and collections, including the Solomon R. Lot 2 Chakaia Booker Blurred Emotions, 2007 Wall relief, Rubber tires and wood 30 x 30 x 14 in. (76.2 x 76.2 x 35.6 cm) Chakaia Booker works almost exclusively with recycled tires—slicing, twisting, stripping, weaving, and riveting rubber and radials to create and exaggerate the textures, prickled edges, and torqued forms of her radical refashioning. Whether she is creating small-scale wall reliefs resembling ballistic blowouts, provocative pedestal sculptures, or colossal landscape-like tableaux, Booker transforms tires—iconic symbols of urban waste and blight—into extraordinary compositions of renewal. This wall relief, Blurred Emotions, demonstrates the artist’s mastery over her chosen medium, as the strips of rubber tires expressively explode and curve off the wall, making visible the powerful emotions suggested by the title. Storm King showcased Booker’s work in a solo exhibition in 2004, and the monumental sculpture, A Moment in Time (2004), is now part of its permanent collection.

In 2010, the artist created a new large scale sculpture, Foci (2010) (30 x 8 x 8 ft.), featured in Storm King’s 50th Anniversary exhibition, 5+5: New Perspectives. In addition to Storm King’s collection, Booker’s work can be found in numerous national and international permanent collections, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Washington, D.C.; the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan; and the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York, among others.

Lot 4 Huma Bhabha Untitled, 2017 Ink and Pastel on Paper 14 ⅞ x 11 in. (37.8 x 28 cm) Though Huma Bhabha’s practice spans printmaking, collage, drawing, and photography, she is probably best known for her arresting sculpture, which she has exhibited both nationally and internationally since the early 1990s. Bhabha’s large-scale bronze work, The Orientalist (2007), is on display at Storm King for its 2017 season. Born in 1962 in Karachi, Pakistan, and now living and working in Poughkeepsie, New York, Bhabha employs found materials to create textural and often figurative two- and three-dimensional works that question traditional art historical portrayals of the human form—reinventing the bust, the reclining figure, or the portrait. In this vibrant yet ominous pastel and ink drawing, a horned demon-like face, scratched out from gestural purple, black, and white lines, peers confrontationally from a glowing red background.

In addition to being featured in All the World’s Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, Huma Bhabha’s work can found in numerous prestigious private and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, New York; and the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, among others. Lot 5 Johnny Swing Storm King Bench 2017 Welded nickel coins 64 x 16 x 20 in. (162.56 x 41 x 51 cm) Made exclusively for Storm King’s 2017 Annual Gala and Live Auction from thousands of carefully-welded nickel coins, this is the first bench ever created by Johnny Swing, whose Butterfly Chair (2002) and Nickel Couch (2001) are amongst Storm King visitors’ favorite interactive works. Swing spends months hand- crafting the thoughtfully-designed biomorphic shapes of these unique seats in foam and epoxy resin to ensure that guests can sit comfortably in them. As part of the design process, Swing describes:

…nickels are welded together on top of the mold, and when that part of the process is complete, the result appears like a delicate lace shell. The next step in the process is adding the structure and legs to the bench, which is a free form process and often the most entertaining for me in the shop.

Hours of intensive labor yield a playful and seemingly weightless surface for Swing’s furniture. In addition to Storm King Art Center, Swing’s work can be found at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, England, and other collections. His work has also been on view in numerous museum exhibitions, including most recently at the Indianapolis Museum of Art; Long House Reserve, East Hampton; and the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Lot 6 Siah Armajani Tomb for Adorno, 2012 Felt pen and metal on graph paper Unframed: 36 x 24 in. (91.4 x 61 cm) Framed: 41.2 x 27.25 (104.6 x 69.2 cm) With nearly one hundred projects realized internationally since the 1960s, Siah Armajani is recognized as a leading figure in conceptualizing the role and function of public art. A comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s work will be on view at the Walker Art Center September through December 2018 before travelling to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, opening February 2019.

Born in Tehran in 1939, Armajani attended The University of Tehran studying Philosophy from 1958-1960, before moving to the United States in 1960 to attend Macalester College in Saint Paul, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1963. He now lives and works in Minneapolis. In this drawing, Armajani depicts a theoretical structure dedicated to Theodor Adorno that acts as a space for reflection and contemplation. Collaged onto the paper is a fragment of common sheet metal, representing the material that would be used on the exterior of the structure were it to be realized. Adorno (1903–69), was a German philosopher, sociologist, musicologist, and critical theorist, and throughout his lifetime published seminal texts that broached the topics of the Enlightenment, the Culture Industry, and modern music, among many others. Most influential on Armajani has been Adorno’s moral philosophy, which critiques how modern society has undermined morality by placing it in the realm of subjective, rather than objective, thought. Tomb for Adorno is part of a larger series that Armajani has recently explored, the “Tomb Series,” which is comprised of sculptures and drawings that pay tribute to philosophers, activists, poets, and critical writers who have been foundational voices to Armajani’s art and ideology. The Series embodies the humanist, democratic, and populist ideals that have defined Armajani’s multi-faceted vision for over forty years.

Part interactive sculpture, part architectural structure, Armajani’s Gazebo for Two Anarchists (1992), in Storm King’s permanent collection, allows viewers to enter the open truss-work of a walkway connecting two rigid chairs.
