Latest News on Japanese Financial Sector According to our inside contacts the Japanese banking crisis shows no signs of ameliorating.

If anything, it is getting worse. Following last week’s news that the Origami bank had folded

we are hearing that Sumo bank has gone belly up and Bonsai bank plans to cut back some

of it’s branches. The Karaoke bank is up for sale and is (you guessed it!) going for a song.

Meanwhile, shares in Kamikaze bank have nose-dived and 500 back office staff at Karate

bank have got the chop. Analysts report that there is something fishy at Sushi bank and staff

there fear that they may get a raw deal.

News from the Board:

1. President Stephen has sourced surplus dolls and pens with the SIDS logo which will

make wonderful gifts for children in Myanmar and the Philippines.

2. Beds being replaced from St. Vincents hospital are to be relocated to Timor Leste,

the sum of $3,750 has been allocated to facilitate transport. Volunteers will be

required to move beds on the 29th. and 30th. December 2011.

3. Del King our nominee to the outgoing GSE team to India will briefly speak to the club

next week 6/12/2011. see ad elsewhere for GSE farewell dinner.

4. Inbound GSE team from India will be hosted by our club on February 26-28 2011. The

team comprises a dentist(team leader), HR manager, aeronautical engineer,

choreographer and an anaesthetist.

5. Olive festival was reported to be a successful event.

6. The club will be calling for volunteers to help at Carols in Queen’s park to sell

gourmet sausages and fruit salad. Mark your diary Sunday 11 December 2011.

7. A letter of thanks was received from the Caroline Chisholm society for computers that were donated from Vic. Uni. (Maria Kouppas)

8. Rotary Presents on Friday 20 April 2011. If you are a bomber supporter or love your

footy then this is not to be missed. Guest speakers are: David Evans, Job Watson and

Bruce Haymanson.

Ebony Gerrish

We had the pleasure of meeting this young lady who our club has sponsored to go

to Germany on long term youth exchange. Ebony lives in Tatura and came down on the train with her mother, Sue and younger brother, James. Her exchange starts on

20 January 2012 when she leaves for Kiel. Her host club in Germany is Kieler Förde. Her school will be the Humboldtschule.

Apart from making new friends and seeing new places Ebony wants to absorb the

German culture (she should have come to our meeting a couple of weeks ago!) and come home fluent in the German language. We should be proud of this young lady

who will be a great representative of our club, district and country

Timor Leste

Bairo Pite Clinic

Bairo Pite Clinic (BPC) is an NGO health clinic, located in Dili, the capital of East Timor

(a.k.a Timor-Leste), that provides free health care services to those in need. Prior to the

Popular Consultation in 1999 when the East Timorese chose independence, it was run

as a military clinic by the Indonesian government and was abandoned when

Indonesian forces withdrew from East Timor in 1999. Originally, the clinic was set up to

serve the immediate needs of a population affected by a humanitarian crisis. As the

violence has subsided, BPC has adapted and transformed from an emergency

medical service to a more comprehensive community health service. Today BPC

remains one of the most highly visited health clinics in the country, seeing an average

of 300 patients per day served by fifty Timorese staff and volunteers, including

internationals.

For more details please visit www.bairopiteclinic.org

The good news: District 9800 has received a donation of Joyce electric beds from St.

Vincent’s Hospital and intends to transport 45 of these plus wheel chairs and birthing

tables to BPC.

Existing beds Replacement Beds from St.

Vincent’s

Where we come in: The Rotary Club of Essendon has allocated $3750 from our DIK

account (all funds generated from our auction night) for the transport of 25 of the

beds to Dili.

Where you can help: District has been advised by St. Vincent’s that the beds must be collected on Thurs 29th and Friday 30th December to tie in with the arrival of new

equipment. The timing is not great, however there are enough vehicles available, and

many hands are needed to assist in loading the beds for transport to DIK at Footscray.

Please contact President Steve ASAP if you can assist.
