January 2018 The Newsletter of Trinity Long Green www.trinitychurchlonggreen.org ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING January 28, 2018 This year our Annual Meeting will be a bit different than in the past. As usual, we will begin with a covered dish luncheon following the 10 a.m. service. As required by our by-laws we will elect 3 vestry members (at this point in time we do not have candidatesnames confirmed) and receive reports (but these will primarily be written.) What will be different is that the bulk of our meeting will consist of En-visioning 200, that is, starting to plan for our 200 th anniversary. I am continually asked as to when our 200 th birthday is, so heres the scoop – We were authorized to form a congregation in the fall of 1819. The church building was consecrated October 12, 1820. So, that means we can celebrate our Bicentennial from October 2019 to October 2020! To properly celebrate, we need to start now. So, at this years annual meeting, we will begin to En-vision both our Bicentennial Celebration AND what we would like our ministry to look like into our third century. We will brainstorm what needs to be done to fix up the old girland what activities we would like to include as part of our year- old celebration. Make plans to attend the Annual Meeting on January 28 (snow date – February 4), following the 10 a.m. service. -Fran Stanford- Trinity Long Green 12400 Manor Rd. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING January 28, 2018

This year our Annual Meeting will be

a bit different than in the past. As

usual, we will begin with a covered

dish luncheon following the 10 a.m.

service. As required by our by-laws we

will elect 3 vestry members (at this

point in time we do not have

candidates’ names confirmed) and receive reports (but these

will primarily be written.) What will be different is that the

bulk of our meeting will consist of En-visioning 200, that is,

starting to plan for our 200th anniversary.

I am continually asked as to when our 200th birthday is, so

here’s the scoop – We were authorized to form a

congregation in the fall of 1819. The church building was

consecrated October 12, 1820. So, that means we can

celebrate our Bicentennial from October 2019 to October

2020!

To properly celebrate, we need to start now. So, at this

year’s annual meeting, we will begin to En-vision both our

Bicentennial Celebration AND what we would like our

ministry to look like into our third century. We will

brainstorm what needs to be done to “fix up the old girl” and

what activities we would like to include as part of our year-

old celebration.

Make plans to attend the Annual Meeting on January 28

(snow date – February 4), following the 10 a.m. service.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Should seasonal weather (snow, ice, etc.) strike at the time of scheduled events at Trinity, you should check the church answering machine for cancellation of events. In general, if there is a weather advisory warning people to stay off the roads, services will probably be cancelled. As always, your own judgment should prevail.

LETTERS RECEIVED Trinity received a Christmas

Card and letter from Anne

Brandt. The card and letter are

posted on the Parish hall bulletin board.

She concludes her letter with “I truly

miss my Trinity family and all the

adventures and gatherings I’ve enjoyed

over the 20 years at Trinity. Peace and

love to all and may 2018 be full of

many joyful blessings.”

A thank-you from Warren Elementary.

The letter is posted on the bulletin

board in the parish hall. The text

includes the following: “The families

receiving so many gifts were

overjoyed!! …. Please know how you

have done so much good and given joy

to 6 families in our little corner of the

world!!”

Dear friends, Another year begins. Some breathe a sigh of relief: • Surely it will be a better year than last year!

How could it be worse? • Another year ticked off. • Done with 2017!

Others greet the new year with anxiety: • What will the new tax laws mean for me? • Can I bring my grades up enough to graduate, or to get into the college/graduate program I need? • Will I get that loan, be able to buy a house or go on that dream vacation this year? • Will I be able to get health insurance, a new job that I can enjoy, get into the school I want to attend? • Will there be enough money? Some stay up on New Year’s Eve to welcome the new year; others celebrate with people in a different time zone (I welcomed the new year with the people of Labrador and then went to bed). Some party hard, some prefer a quiet evening at home. Some welcome the new year with traditional foods. I MUST have black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Others mark the day with parades, football, and snack food. Some take down their Christmas decorations, even though Christmas season runs for twelve days and so will not be over until January 6. One way or another we make a big deal out of the calendar change, an artificial, human, construction. The transition between December 31 and January 1 is no different (objectively) from any other day-to-day transition. Yet we make a big deal out of it anyway. New Year’s matters because every last one of us needs a “do-over”, or wants to leave something behind, or would like a second (or thirteenth or thirtieth) chance to “get it right,” whatever “it” might be. The good news is that our God is God of second chances! Jesus came that we might have life, and life means a chance a right the wrongs, to grow into new ways of being, and to learn new things. Baptism marks our “New Year’s Day” and our “birthday” into the new way of life Jesus offers. Every Sunday is another chance to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, and our own. Every absolution received after every confession marks a chance to get it right this time. If you feel a need to make a change in your life, remember, God allows u-turns, anytime, anyplace. No need to wait to make “New Years’ Resolutions;” every day begins a “new year” in Christ. Embracing the new year, Fran+

EPIPHANY A season of manifestation

The twelve days of Christmas are all too quickly gone, and decorations stored away for another year. Crèches with Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, animals, angels and magi are typically packed away before the wise men even arrive! January 7, The Feast of the Epiphany, marks the arrival of the magi, the wise men who followed the star to greet the new born king. This Holy Day was recognized as the Feast of the Incarnation long before the church began to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ on December 25. The Feast of the Epiphany continues to be the principal celebration in Eastern, Greek and Russian Orthodox churches.

While Christmas holds before us the miracle of the Incarnation, God made flesh coming to dwell among us, Epiphany (both the feast and the season it begins) turns our attention to the various ways in which Jesus’ divinity was manifested (made apparent) among us. Epiphany begins with the arrival of the wise men (Matthew 5:1-12). Wise men, sages, magi from the East noted an astral phenomenon that they interpreted as proclaiming an important birth. These magi, gentiles, represent the non-Jewish nations of the world in the same way that the shepherds represented the common Jewish peasants. The magi brought gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh; because there are three gifts, we assume there were three wise men, but Matthew is silent on this point. The first Sunday after the Feast of the Epiphany always marks the baptism of Jesus. This year we will hear Mark’s version of this event (Mark 1:4-11). As Jesus comes out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends upon him and a voice proclaims You are my Son, the Beloved.” Throughout the remainder of the Epiphany season, we encounter Jesus in various ways that reveal something particular about his nature. The Last Sunday of Epiphany, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, Jesus is transfigured on the mountaintop emphasizing his divine nature, and the voice from heaven once again proclaims Jesus to be the Son of God, the beloved.

CHRISTMAS OUTREACH

This Christmas, Trinity supported local children in need at Warren Elementary in Cockeysville, located just five miles from Trinity. This was a combined effort of the Church and the Day School. We exceeded expectations and

provided approximately sixty gifts to four families and raised $150 dollars towards the Food for Thought Program. The staff at Warren Elementary were extremely appreciative and very gracious, and I have no doubt that we made Christmas a little brighter for a few families. Of course, a project of this size and success requires a huge amount of effort and there are many people to thank. We had parishioners and Day School staff help organize the project, including making angels, organizing and tracking gifts, and delivering gifts on time to Warren Elementary. We also had a tremendous amount of generosity from parishioners and Day School families who made monetary donations and who purchased, wrapped, and delivered gifts to Trinity in a timely fashion. So, I would like to express a very special thank you to everyone who helped make a difference in our little corner of the world this Christmas.

Sincerely,

Randal Hand Senior Warden
