CELEBRATING THE EMS IN ALL OF US

General Information Purpose The Greater Northwest EMS Conference is geared towards those involved in pre-hospital care with basic and advanced training, including first responders, emergency medical technicians, firefighters, nurses and law enforcement personnel. Registration Registration and payment must be received by Friday, September 19, 2014 in order to avoid late fees. Walk-in registrations are accepted, however late fees will apply. Conference materials will be available for pick up Thursday, October 2 from 5:00-7:00pm and each morning. Accreditation Continuing education certificates will be distributed at the conclusion of each session. A total of 13.0 contact hours will be available. Lodging A block of rooms has been reserved at the Shooting Star Casino & Event Center, which features a pool, restaurant, buffet, lounge, casino and secured parking. The conference rate of $60 per room is available through Friday, September 19. To reserve a room call #218-261-2621 and refer to “Greater NW.” The Shooting Star Casino is pleased to provide a smoke-free environment throughout the event center and dining areas. Refunds Full refunds will be made only if cancellations are received by Friday, September 19; substitutions are welcome at any time. ACCREDITATION All credit hours are approved through Sanford Health EMS Education and certificates will be distributed. A total of 12.0 contact hours will be available. Greater Northwest, in conjunction with Sanford EMS Education, has worked diligently to provide a conference schedule that will ensure participants meet 100% of the new EMS national training requirements within a two-year period. Therefore, topics not offered this year will be offered at the 2020 Greater Northwest EMS Conference! See schedule for which topics count towards NCCR requirements. POST credits are also available for law enforcement personnel!

LODGING A block of rooms has been reserved at the Shooting Star Casino & Event Center, which features a pool, restaurant, buffet, lounge, casino and secured parking. PRE-CONFERENCE Join us on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 12:00pm-4:00pm for “Laerdal Simulation Mannequin Training.” Thanks to a grant from the MN Department of Health, Greater Northwest EMS is proud to offer a Laerdal Simulation Mannequin as a training adjunct throughout the region. Training will be provided by Hans Lamkin, Hennepin County Medical Center. Simulation training will include the following topics: set up, breakdown, issue debugging, website videos and available files. NOTE: Class size is limited to 15 people. STEVE BERRY, EMT-P Steve Berry brings his cartoons, humor and insight into the emergency medical community! Steve has been a paramedic for the past 35 years in the Southern Colorado region. He has now drawn over 2,600 humorous EMS and emergency medical cartoons that are printed in 10 illustrated books collectively known, as “I’m Not An Ambulance Driver.” Steve has also been a long time Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS), writing monthly columns and illustrating cartoons.

AL BENNEY, NREMT-P, CP Al Benney began his EMS career as an EMT for Stillwater Ambulance while attending paramedic school at Mankato State University. Since 1980 he has worked full time as a Paramedic in ALS and Critical Care Ambulances, and fixed and rotor wing aircraft. He is currently an EMS Faculty member at Hennepin Technical College working with students at all levels from EMR to Community Para-medicine.

STEVEN BRIGGS, MD As a general surgeon, Dr. Briggs specializes in the surgical treatment of a wide range of diseases and conditions which involve the breast, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, gall bladder, lower intestines, hernia and abdomen. He is currently affiliated with Sanford Medical Center Fargo and Sanford South University. Dr. Briggs completed medical school at the University of North Dakota and residency at Mayo Clinic.

AMY CARD, BS, RHPC Amy is the Regional Healthcare Preparedness Coordinator for the Northwest Health Services Coalition, serving 15 hospitals, clinics, public health, emergency management and other skilled nursing facilities. Amy holds Emergency Management Certifications from the MN Division of Emergency Management, FEMA and International Association of Emergency Managers.

KIRK HUGHES, RN, FF/EMT, CSPI Kirk Hughs works as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information and had been the Education Director for the Hennepin Regional Poison Center since 2000. He has been a Firefighter/EMT for the last 22 years. Kirk also works as an Investigator for the Hennepin Medical Examiner’s Office. He is an Advance Hazmat Life Support Instructor, Hazmat Technician, and certified in Advanced Medical Life Support.

MARK CUNNINGHAM, MDDr. Cunningham has over 20 years experience at the Red Lake Indian Hospital as a staff physician and EMS Medical Director. Before his employment at Red Lake he was an Air Force military physician for over 20 years. Dr. Cunningham also served as a tactical EMT in Washington, D.C. for several years.

JOHN FOX, NRPJohn has over 20 years of EMS experience including positions in direct patient care, supervisory, leadership and education. Much of John’s EMS experience has been in the rural setting, including: ground 911, inter-facility critical care, aeromedical and fire based organizations. In addition to clinical practice, he is involved in a number of regional committees.

KATIE KRESSIN, NRP, FPCKaty is the MN Toward Zero Deaths Program Director for the West Central Region, as well as a Certified Flight Medic. Since receiving her Paramedic AAS degree in 2000, she has worked as a Paramedic in rural and metro areas of Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Her medic experience includes ground and flight critical care transport. Katy has been providing EMS education for over 17 years.

ROB PEARSON, NRPRob Pearson is a Fire Service Instructor and EMS Educator. Rob is a 33-year Paramedic with North Memorial Health Ambulance and Air Care. He is also the Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Maple Grove. In 2018, the Minnesota Ambulance Association named him EMS Educator of the Year. In 2019, Rob was awarded the EMS Star by Governor Tim Walz.

DEB SYVERSON, RN, BSN, TCRNDeb is the Director of Trauma Services at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. Deb brings over 20 years of Trauma management experience to her presentations. She also has extensive EMS experience as a flight nurse and ambulance EMT. Deb graduated from the University of North Dakota with a BS in Nursing.

MICHAEL WILCOX, MDDr. Wilcox is a Board Certified Family Practice Physician who has worked in rural Minnesota for 38 years. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the U of M, Minneapolis and completed his post graduate training at HCMC. Dr. Wilcox is the Emergency Care Plus Program Coordinator at North Memorial in Minneapolis, and a Clinical Associate Professor at the U of M. He is the Medical Director for Rural EMS Services and the Community Paramedic Program at Hennepin Technical College.

MEGAN CARLBLOM, MSN, RN, SCRNMegan is a Stroke Certified Registered Nurse with experience in emergency department patient care and currently works as the Stroke Program Coordinator at Essentia Health in Fargo. She works closely with all healthcare personnel in the Stroke Systems of Care to improve quality and care throughout our region.
