Mathru Educational Trust for the Blind (R)
Dear Friends,Greetings from Mathru!
Ms.Gubbi .R.MukthaManaging Trustee
I have the pleasure of presenting our twelth Annual and Financial Report. But as a preamble, I would like to give you a brief introduction to and a history of Mathru.
In 2001, A few like-minded friends and I registered the Mathru Educational Public Charitable Trust for the Blind. Our vision was a free residential school for the underprivileged blind. Our goal was to give them a good high school education. And while doing so, give them the skills, self-esteem and confidence to join and become contributing, self-sufficient members of our modern society.
On September 5th 2001 the, Mathru School was started in a cottage in the back yard of my house in Yelahanka, with one blind student and one blind teacher. Today, eleven years later, we have around one hundred and twenty children, residing and studying in first grade to tenth grade, in a functional, architect designed building, fully supported by a complement of qualified teachers and other staff. All made possible by donations of time, money and services from Indian and international individuals and institutions. I am proud to say that the school is fully recognized by the Karnataka State Department for the Disabled and listed under its Grant-in-Aid Code.
In acknowledgement of the good and essential work being done at Mathru, the Government of Karnataka has grantedone acre of land within the BBMP limits, in Srinivasapura village, Yelahanka, Bangalore. Here, Mathru has built and established a new campus consisting of class rooms, hostel, computer lab, library, dining hall, kitchen etc. The campus became functional in 2012. The hostel is for blind students from outlying districts studying in regular colleges in Bangalore. Training and education is being given on this campus to multisensory disabled children and hearing impaired children by qualified teachers. In addition, to help the surrounding community, we have started a learning centre for under privileged children of the locality; and a coaching centre for tenth standard girls to help their performance in the critical public examinations of that grade. Mathru is also helping under privileged children of the locality studying in the surrounding government schools and who have no access tocomputers, by teaching them basic computer use in the Mathru computer lab. For women of the local community. Mathru is conducting health camps, yoga classes and distributing sanitary napkins and other hygiene aids.
I take particular pleasure and pride in informing you that 32 Mathru blind students passed their tenth grade public exams with distinction and are now pursuing their college education.
Many organizations, public and private, the media and the public at large have helped us in our efforts and given usmuch needed publicity and support. The Government of Karnataka has recognized Mathru as one of the bestinstitutions for the disabled by twice giving Mathru the State Award for Excellence. All our achievements were made with help from our friends, well wishers, volunteers, donors, staff and government officials. I would like to place on record, our appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to all of those who stood by us during our growth and during our difficult times. I am confident that what we have done in the last ten years has placed us in a position of strength to continue our focus on consistently delivering quality education and a sustainable future to our blind and disabled children.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge the encouragement, and support received from our Trustees, and Dr. N. K. Srinivasan, Mr. Rana Nanjappa, Mr. Appa Rao – Managing Director, Centum Group of Companies, Mr. A. K. Mahesh – Industrialist, Bangalore, Mr. Dhiru Vadera, London, Ms. Sharada Byranna, Chicago, the Directors and research students of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, Karnataka State officials and many, many more. Let us continue to work together for the socio-economic rehabilitation of those living in darkness, and bring light into their world and ours!
Thank you.
Dr. N.K.SrinivasanABC- India, Bangalore
I have been associated with Mathru School for the Blind since its inception in 2001. The steady growth of
this school is phenomenal - due to dedicated and sincere efforts of its Founder-Principal Ms G R Muktha
and her team of dedicated teachers and staff.
The major milestone was reached when the school had about 40 students and the residential school had
completed its own building at Yelahanka, New Town, with about 13000 square feet. Surmounting many
initial problems, the school was set on a firm foundation. The instruction imparted to the visually challenged
children is comprehensive, including Braille practice, computer training, music and sports activities and
many craft skills like knitting and weaving. It is a delight to see young visually challenged children doing
computer tasks with voice interactive software, such as Microsoft power point with ease. The school has
extensive facilities, including a recording studio, Braille printers with computers and a large
Braille library which serves visually challenged college students also.
Another important milestone was reached when the state government offered an one acre plot in
Srinivasapura and the school started constructing hostels for VC students attending local colleges and
special sections for multi-sensory disabled children, deaf-dumb children and for the hearing impaired. This
centre called “Mathru School for Differently Disabled” is a special school under the same trust and poised
for greater growth in the next few years.
Mathru School has developed an international image with interaction with Carnegie-Mellon University
USA for Braille tutor [electronic] for field testing, visit of foreign students for summer training and other
foreign dignitaries like Barbara Piner of ASTI {American Service To India}, and Lisa Lloyd of Foundation
for Fighting Blindness [FFB] USA. Mathru School maintains clean and healthy ambience throughout the
school-a feature rarely found in other schools of similar category in India
.
Above all I should mention that it is the loving personal care of the children by Muktha and her staff that has
made a great impact and draws many visitors to the school. The school will reach greater heights in the
years to come and deserves the support of all well intentioned persons, interested in charity and public
service.

After retirement, I joined an NGO, Asha for Education, in the USA. Asha's primary goal is education of
underprivileged children in India. It is an international NGO and I became a volunteer with their New Jersey
chapter. During one of my trips to Bangalore a volunteer there told me about Mathru Blind School. So, I
visited them as part of the search to identify eligible projects for my Asha chapters' annual grants. That was
in 2003/2004.
At that time Mathru was located in a makeshift “school” with just a few students in a small house and some
sheds. Today it is in a beautiful, functional building, designed by one of India's leading environmental
architects. Over 100 under-privileged blind, girls and boys, have a home, a school – and a future. Mathru
has been recognized as an outstanding institution – a model if you will. A new campus has been built with
facilities to reach out and help the blind and other disabled children and adults.
My NGO Asha for Education monitors its projects every year. Site visits are a must for award and
continuation of grants. To Mathru's credit they have won grants from Asha every year since 2004. Asha
considers Mathru as one of its most successful projects. I had the pleasure of introducing Mathru to the
Carnegie Mellon University in USA. This has led to the development of the Braille Tutor with the help of
Carnegie student interns from their Pittsburgh and Quatar campuses.
In 2012 Mathru achieved two milestones. It has been accredited as a school to train teachers for the
disabled by the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) network of India and the Rehabilitation Council
(RCI) of India. (The World Health Organization (WHO) established country-based CBR networks in 2009).
Both CBR and RCI visited Mathru and approved its resources, infrastructure and facilities prior to
accreditation. By July 2012 two batches of trainees have completed training with courses and teachers from
Bangalore University. Also in 2012, Ms. Muktha was nominated as a member of the Karnataka State
Commission for the Protection of Child Rights.
As a volunteer with Asha and as an individual, I am proud and honored by my association with Mathru. It
has been a very satisfying experience. I look forward to the association as Mathru continues to grow in its
services to the disabled.

Mathru Annual Report-2012-20132
The entire working staff (both teaching and non-teaching) dedicate themselves to the cause
of blind and multisensory disabled children. They consider and treat the children of Mathru as
their own and give them full emotional support and bring them up with love and affection. In fact
Mathru is a home away from home as far as the students of Mathru are concerned. Parents of the
children are very happy with the progress their children make at Mathru.
Children who live in Mathru are joyous and their parents are happy. Donors are satisfied and
are always eager to help Mathru in whatever way they can. Mathru values all contribution small and
large and the same is spent in a most judicious manner. Thus children of Mathru, and their parents,
donors and staff of Mathru work as a well knit team. Even though Mathru has no sources of income
of its own, donations are received from many sources. Benovelent individuals, philanthropic
institutions, corporate bodies, and industrialists are among those who have been supporting Mathru.
Individual donors can choose their own way of making donations. They may choose to sponsor full
educational expenses of one child for the whole year or may choose to meet one day's food expenses of
Mathru, on occasions such as their wedding anniversary, birthday celebration, etc. Donors also have the
choice of making donations in kind like Braille sheets, slates, educational aids, computers, uniforms, study
materials etc. Many temples around Mathru come forward to contribute provisions like rice, dal, oil and
other edible items.
Mathru is registered with American Services to India (ASTI) and through this foundation Mathru has been
getting contributions in foreign currency. Mathru built its own residential school building because of
support given by ASHA for Education, Central New Jersey chapter of USA who have been supporting
Mathru since 2005.
Mathru also gets “On line” donations from different sources. Mathru has developed a cohesive relationship
with all its donors. During Annual day celebrations all donors are invited and their contributions are
gratefully acknowledged. On this occasion achievements of Mathru are well brought out for donors to see
for themselves .They can observe how their contributions have enabled Mathru to progress so well.
Children of Mathru have great talents. On occasion of some festivals, Rajyaostava day, or National day,
some of the talented children give performances in music , monoactiong, dancing etc., Thus, children
themselves raise small amount of funds which is used for their welfare activity.
Activities of Mathru:Activities of Mathru can be summarized as follows:
“Kindness” is a language which deaf can hear and blind can see"

Eighty four Visually challenged children are studying from grade one to grade ten. They are being
provided shelter, clothing, food, medical attention, education, vocational training and skill
development.
Mathru is also supporting 7 adult blind to pursue their college education by providing free
accommodation, food, study material, and even their college fees are being paid by Mathru.
Mathru started a free learning centre for multisensory disabled children in 2010 which is, the
first of its kind in South India and provides training on living skills to these children who are suffering not
only from blindness but are also associated with deafness, dumbness, mental retardation, autism etc.,
Mathru, beside providing free education to the visually challenged, is also imparting training
on mobility, daily living skills, music, craft, drama, mono acting etc.,
Mathru has its own Braille language printing machine. All the text books as prescribed by the
Government of Karnataka syllabus are translated and printed into Braille language. Besides, other
general knowledge books, story books, etc. are also being printed in Braille language. Mathru maintains
a well stocked library to cater to the needs of blind of all age groups.
In 2011, Mathru brought out “Manthan”, a fortnightly Braille magazine consisting of current affairs,
general knowledge, English grammar, puzzles, stories, important events etc in association with Prayukti,
and is distributing it to all the institutions and schools of Bangalore, which are working for the blind.
Prayukti is an association of young women and men whose vision is to help institutions with a special
cause.
One of the aims of Mathru is to introduce technology wherever it possible for the better learning and
living of the blind. In the year 2006, Mathru in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University of USA
developed a Braille Tutor, an electronic device which teaches blind children to learn the Braille through
appropriate software in an effective way.
8. The CBR network has evaluated the availability of adequate infrastructure facility and competence of
Mathru and has granted permission to Mathru to conduct training programmes for teacher's who are
working for disabled children. Now Mathru is one of their recognized “Study Centre”. Mathru will not
only continue to provide free education to visually challenged children but will also impart training to
teachers who in turn can educate disabled children. This will be a holistic approach for providing quality
education.

Further Information
Friends, this earth has given us life, resources and the capabilities to build, improve and share
many wonderful, beautiful things. A loving vision and our attitudes and actions can transform our
world into one where there is harmony among the haves and have-nots. The community at large
has to get involved and consider it a sacred duty to support someone, anyone, suffering for no fault
of his or hers. Mathru is attempting to make a difference in the life of the disabled by providing them
with education, training, life skills and the confidence to lead a life with dignity - without being a
burden on their families and society. Mathru started with visually disabled children and is expanding
its services to adults and the multi sensory disabled.
This is an appeal to all people everywhere to donate generously and bring self-worth and independence to the
disabled under privileged communities who share the world with us. You can help us to reach our goals by
donating your money, time, talent and experience.
