The American Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ASHNR) was founded in Chicago, Illinois, on November 12, 1976, by Drs. Galdino E. Valvassori of Chicago, William N. Hanafee of Los Angeles, Guy D. Potter of New York, and Daniel H. Johnson, Jr. of New Orleans. The Society was incorporated by Dr. Johnson, Jr. under the laws of Louisiana on March 18, 1977, and sponsored the first postgraduate course on Radiology in Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology in Los Angeles in May 1977. The Society assumed sponsorship of the annual course on the same subject, which was held in Chicago under the auspices of Dr. Valvassori in Chicago from 1966-1976. The ASHNR was founded to stimulate interest and advance knowledge in the field of head and neck radiology, to foster continuing development of head and neck radiology as an art and a science, to improve methods of teaching radiologic diagnosis of disease of the head and neck, to provide meetings for presentation and discussion of papers, and to promote the dissemination of knowledge in head and neck radiology.
The annual dues in 1977 were $30.00 for both Active Members who could vote and Associate Members who were non-voting. All candidates for membership had to be approved by the Board of Directors, initially the four founding members of the society. Applicants for Charter Membership had to be sponsored by at least two Board Members to meet the requirements of the Articles of Incorporation that two members must propose a candidate. In 2009, a new Affiliate membership category was added to allow non-physician radiology professionals such as an Oral/Maxillofacial Radiologists, MRI Scientists or other Allied Health Professionals to apply for membership.
The first actual election of members took place in May 1978 during the annual meeting in New York. The Articles of Incorporation required an annual meeting in May of each calendar year rotating among Western, Eastern, Southern and Midwestern geographic regions of the country, reflecting the geographic practices of the four founding members. A Recognition of Founders and Gold Medal Ceremony took place in May 2000 when the founders received the inaugural Gold Medals of the society. The Annual Meeting has also grown in size and stature, becoming recognized as one of the premier teaching events in head and neck radiology.

In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education’s Standards for Commercial Support, Educational Symposia requires that all Planning Committee, academic faculty members, and peer reviewer(s) involved in the development of CME content disclose financial relationships which have relevance to the CME content of the activity. An individual has a relevant financial relationship if he or she (or his or her spouse/partner) has a financial relationship in any amount occurring in the last 12 months with a commercial interest whose products or services are discussed in this CME activity, and over which the individual has content control.
The Planning Committee, academic faculty members, and peer reviewer(s) for this symposium were required to complete a Full Disclosure Form, and their disclosures, if any, are listed below. If relationships were identified, those Planning Committee and/or faculty members, and/or peer reviewer(s) attested that such relationship(s) would not cause them to be commercially biased. In addition, each has signed a Resolution of Conflict of Interest form agreeing that, when developing or presenting content discussing healthcare products or services with those manufacturers or providers with whom he or she (or his or her spouse/partner) has a relevant financial relationship, they will: (1) use the “best available evidence” in the specialty or therapeutic area as support for any statements he or she makes about those products or services; (2) not make patient care or practice recommendations based on his or her “clinical experience” only, although he or she may indicate that a particular product or service is utilized in his or her practice; and (3) not express a personal or professional preference for those products or services.
Faculty members have been advised that if their lectures will include discussion of off label or investigational use of any product, they must disclose this to the audience.

TARGET AUDIENCE
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
• General radiologists seeking to improve their understanding and skills in head and neck imaging.
• Radiologists with an interest in head and neck imaging who wish to increase their knowledge of imaging and treatment of head and neck pathology.
• Dental and oral-maxillofacial practitioners with an interest in pathology and imaging of the face and adjacent soft tissues.
• Non- radiologists, including ENT physicians, head and neck surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and general surgeons, who are interested in head and neck cancer therapy and diagnosis.
• Allied health professionals, including physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and radiology technologists with an interest in head and neck cancer or head and neck imaging.
• Physicians-in-training, residents and fellows pursuing careers in radiology, otolaryngology, and treatment of head and neck cancer.
Attendees should, at the completion of this course, be able to:
• Identify the anatomy of the temporal bone, skull base, sinuses and neck.
• Describe patterns of head and neck lymphatic cancer spread.
• Review the anatomy of cranial nerves and the clinical presentation of various pathologies affecting cranial nerves.
• Identify the imaging features and clinical significance of perineural tumor spread.
• Describe the common infectious and inflammatory processes that involve the orbit, neck, and temporal bone.
• Discuss uses of ultrasound in the head and neck including ultrasound guided head and neck biopsy techniques.
• Describe the indications and clinical applications for perfusion and diffusion imaging of head and neck tumors.
• Determine the best imaging technique for staging of head and neck cancer.
• Identify sources for errors in head and neck imaging and potential paths to improvement.
• Discuss the benefits and limitations of PET/CT imaging for head and neck cancer
• Recognize imaging features of various developmental lesions of the face, orbit, temporal bone, and neck.
• Evaluate emergent head and neck pathology.
No special educational preparation is required for this CME activity.
