WINTER NEWSLETTER 2018

THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEUROSURGICAL SOCIETY, INC.

President Brett Dietze, MD welcomed members and guests to the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society, jointly provided by the AANS, at Banff, Alberta, June 16-20th, 2018. Dr. Kelly Schmidt did a superb job with her arrangements for us at The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Dr. Bryan Wohlfeld was our Scientific Program Chairman and prepared a stimulating scientific program. Our Honored Guests were Dr. Hunt Batjer, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Dr. John Hurlbert, Co-director of the UA Spine Program, University of Arizona Division of Neurosurgery.

The general scientific program, once again, offered a broad spectrum of neurosurgical topics in an atmosphere that stimulated and encouraged open and friendly discussion. This opportunity for unencumbered collegial discussions and the sharing of individual clinical experiences remains one of the highlights and major attractions of the RMNS annual meeting. Our social events calendar was also attended with enthusiasm.

The first place Resident Award went to Timothy Ung, MD from the University of Colorado for his talk on "Intraoperative Sodium Flourescein for Tissue Biopsy and Resection of Spinal Cord Lesions". Second place went to Tarek El Ahmadieh, MD from UT Southwestern for his talk on "The Southwestern Aneurysm Severity Index (SASI) Prediction of Outcomes of Ruptured Aneurysms Treated with Microsurgery". Third place went to Jonathon Scoville from the University of Utah and his talk on the "Comparison of the Physical Properties of Hypertonic Saline and Mannitol". Each program was reimbursed $500 per resident to help offset travel expenses. We will continue to do this in the future in order to encourage programs to send their residents to the meeting.

The Social program this year was spectacular and started with the opening reception at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Sunday nights event was a gondola ride up to the top of Sulphur Mountain where an amazing dinner was served with breathtaking views of six different mountain ranges. The closing ceremony featured a "dueling piano" group and a new tradition was started with the first annual "Karaoke Cup" being awarded to Dr. Joel MacDonald and Dr. Bryan Wohlfeld for their rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody"!

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the AANS and RMNS. The AANS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.

Disclosures will be included in the final program.

The 2019 Annual Meeting of the RMNS, jointly provided by the AANS, will be held June 15th-19th in Durango, Colorado. The meeting will have topics of interest to practicing neurological surgeons, residents and mid-level providers and will consist of interactive didactic sessions, slides and video presentations.

Durango is located in Southwestern Colorado at an elevation of 6500 feet. While Durango is a small town, it is well-known for its access to many outdoor activities. It is convenient to travel to Durango as there are numerous flight options from North American cities. The venue for the meeting will be the scenic Purgatory Ski Resort. The resort is about 20 miles north of Durango and hosts numerous family activities such as alpine slide, mountain coaster, mountain biking, zip line, and many others. Purgatory is a very family friendly location nestled among the idyllic Rocky Mountains.

The 2019 meeting is expected to be a great one and will provide opportunities for spine, cranial, and trauma CME . Guest speakers will be Dr Michael T. Lawton and Dr Juan Uribe from the Barrow Neurological Institute. As always, the meeting provides great educational and networking opportunities for surgeons and vendors, and many social activities for all attendees and families.

We hope that you join us for the 54th annual meeting of the Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society Annual Meeting!
