Dear Attendee, On behalf of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System’s Office of Individual and Family Affairs (AHCCCS-OIFA), I would like to welcome you to the 2017 conference of the International Association of Peer Supporters (iNAPS). We are very honored that iNAPS chose Arizona to be the site of this year’s conference. Arizona has a long and rich history of peer and recovery support. We have been training individuals with lived experience of treatment for mental health and substance use disorders to support their peers since the early 2000s. Our state has always enjoyed having a diverse array of agencies offering training in peer and recovery support. In 2012, our state’s peer and recovery support community came together and established a set of peer/recovery support training program standards that eventually all training programs would adhere to. The State put these standards into policy, and they serve as the core of our Medicaid-reimbursable peer/recovery support training and credentialing programs. Since then, over 3,000 individuals have been credentialed as Peer/Recovery Support Specialists (P/RSS) through the variety of training programs now available to persons across the state. With the integration of physical and behavioral health happening nationally, P/RSS’s working in the field often find themselves in new and conflicting positions. The principle of mutuality, for example, which is at the heart of peer and recovery support, can easily be compromised when the “peer-to-peer” relationship changes into one based on power and professional status. It will require considerable education and collaboration to move the medical establishment to a place from which it can more regularly earn the trust of people who haven’t always felt respected or heard by it. In times like these, meetings such as this conference provide invaluable support to those who support others, and give all of us a chance to learn from each other. It’s important that we recognize this opportunity for what it is: a chance to make history. Kathy Bashor, MC Bureau Chief, Office of Individual and Family Affairs Division of Health Care Advocacy and Advancement

1G: Crescent 2: Empowering and Educating the Peer Workforce Through Community Collaboration: The Arizona Peer and FamilyCareer Academy

– Jana Spalding ([email protected])

The Peer and Family Career Academy (PFCA) was created in response to community input by the Arizona State Office of Individual and Family Affairs and Arizona State University. The PFCA responded, creating and delivering courses in five focus areas prompting peer career advancement. Let's talk about what we learned!

Learning objectives (participants will be able to…) • Describe the trajectory of the establishment of the Peer and Family Career Academy• Understand that people in positions of authority in State and Academic settings

support recovery and are willing to promote peer support• Understand the importance of community involvement in peer support education

and development of the peer workforce• Experience and imitate community decision-making

Learningobjectives(participantswillbeableto…)

• Identify the three types of external requirements that shape the environment inwhich many peer- run organizations operate.

• Recognize the sources of tension between the system requirements and thevalues of peer-based recovery support.

• Describe how to use the interplay between these requirements and the valuesof peer-based recovery support as the basis for achieving program goals andenhancing service outcomes.
