    This report is submitted to the European Commission in accordance with Article 9 of Council Directive 2003/99/EC*. The information has also been forwarded to the European Food SafetyAuthority (EFSA).

    The report contains information on trends and sources of zoonoses and zoonotic agents in Ireland during theyear 2016.

    The information covers the occurrence of these diseases and agents in animals, foodstuffs and in some casesalso in feedingstuffs. In addition the report includes data on antimicrobial resistance in some zoonotic agentsand indicator bacteria as well as information on epidemiological investigations of foodborne outbreaks.Complementary data on susceptible animal populations in the country is also given. The information givencovers both zoonoses that are important for the public health in the whole European Union as well as zoonoses,which are relevant on the basis of the national epidemiological situation.The report describes the monitoring systems in place and the prevention and control strategies applied in thecountry. For some zoonoses this monitoring is based on legal requirements laid down by the European Unionlegislation, while for the other zoonoses national approaches are applied.

    The report presents the results of the examinations carried out in the reporting year. A national evaluation ofthe epidemiological situation, with special reference to trends and sources of zoonotic infections, is given.Whenever possible, the relevance of findings in foodstuffs and animals to zoonoses cases in humans isevaluated.The information covered by this report is used in the annual European Union Summary Reports on zoonosesand antimicrobial resistance that are published each year by EFSA.

    Zoonoses are diseases or infections, which are naturally transmissible directly or indirectly between animals and humans.Foodstuffs serve often as vehicles of zoonotic infections. Zoonotic agents cover viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites or otherbiological entities that are likely to cause zoonoses.

    2.1 CAMPYLOBACTERIOSIS

    2.1.1 Campylobacter in animals

    2.1.1.1 Antimicrobial resistance in C. jejuni Gallus gallus (fowl)

    Additional information

    In 2016, the focus of the official AMR  surveillance carried out under 2013/652/EU was the broiler sector. 174 isolates of Campylobacter jejuni werecultured from broiler caeca at slaughter and underwent testing; resistance levels were comparable to those seen in equivalent isolates from 2014,when broilers were last screened. Poultry caecal samples were samples were taken  in all factories that slaughter poultry. Due to the small numberof poultry flocks available for sampling , all flocks were sampled and in some cases it was necessary to take repeat samples from certain flocks inorder to get the required number of isolates.

    2.2 ESCHERICHIA COLI, NON-PATHOGENIC

    2.2.1 Escherichia coli, non-pathogenic in foodstuffs

    2.2.1.1 Antimicrobial resistance in E.coli, non-pathogenic, unspecified Meat from broilers (Gallus gallus)

    Additional information

    In relation to the retail fresh meat samples, this sampling was carried out nationwide, broken down by county with the choice of premises left up tothe sampling officer to select and sampling was done on a convenience basis. Three hundred samples of broiler caeca and broiler meat werescreened for ESBL/ Amp- C  and Carbapenamase producing E. coli using specific selective methods. These selective agars inhibit the growth ofsusceptible bacteria, allowing resistant bacteria that are present at low levels to be detected. Using these selective media to detect even low levelsof resistant bacteria, ESBl/ Amp-C producing E. coli were isolated from 262 caecal and 198 broiler meat samples. No Carbapenamase producing E.coli were detected.

    Additional information

    In relation to the retail fresh meat samples, this sampling was carried out nationwide, broken down by county with the choice of premises left up tothe sampling officer to select and sampling was done on a convenience basis. A single isolate of E coli from an imported meat sample was Colistinresistant.

    2.2.2 Escherichia coli, non-pathogenic in animals

    2.2.2.1 Antimicrobial resistance in E.coli, non-pathogenic, unspecified Gallus gallus (fowl)

    170 isolates of indicator commensal Escherichia coli , also from caeca, were tested; 4 of these were ESBL/ Amp-C producers. Poultry caecal sampleswere samples were taken  in all factories that slaughter poultry.     Additional information
