Friends and Fellow Cattlmen, We are excited to invite you to our Annual Production sale this year and to present this offering for your inspection! What a year 2019 has been. From a dry start to a wetter than normal fall, a record October blizzard, and a snowy, cold first half of the winter, just when it appeared that 2020 was helping balance the dramatic scale of challenges in ranching, we have all become involved in a global pandemic. As events continue to progress, one thing is certain. Ranching must go on. Cows need to be bred, and we will make any accomadations necessary to best facilitate purchasing our sale offering. As always, we welcome and enjoy those of you that want to preview the offering in advance of the sale weekend. DVAuction is a tremendous resource for bidding online, and we also purchase numerous cattle yearly on order. Stay tuned to our facebook page and web site for any and all pertinent sale information.

Our goal has been and will continue to be offering large sire groups, made up of several 3/4 and ET full brothers. Identifying the sires we feel are advancing our program not only builds us a more consistent cowherd but also enables us to offer like genetics in volume to our customers.

The bulls were weaned on the 22nd of September. They were developed on a ration consisting of corn silage, first cutting alfalfa hay, oat hay, corn screenings, wheat midds, sunflower screenings and barley hulls. Their gain test was started on the day they were weaned and continued until we took yearling weights 153 days later, with their average daily gain being 3.29 lbs/day. The bulls were carcass ultrasounded on Feb. 20th. They were then moved to a couple large, hilly pens, and backed down even further on energy, where they can continue to harden up, get plenty of exercise, and prepare for pasture service.

All registerd lots in this sale have genomic enhanced EPDs and are parent verified through the AngusGS test. By doing this, we ensure not only the pedigree we are selling but also offer the most accurate EPD data available. Scrotal measurements will be available on our web site by mid-April as well as carcass data, and yearling data on the registered heifers. (www.spicklerranchsouth.com)

As in the past, videos of each lot will be available two weeks before the sale. A link to the videos will be available on our web site as well as the DVAuction site. Online bidding will be available through DVAuction.com. You must register with them prior to the sale. We invite you to our ranch on Sunday afternoon to view the cattle and enjoy a lunch available in the afternoon and throughout the evening.

Herd Health: At weaning our calves were given: Bovi-Shield Gold + One Shot, Ultra-bac 7+somnubac, Inforce 3, and dewormed with Safegaurd. They were boostered with Bovi-Shield Gold 5 and Vision 7 somnus. This spring the bulls and heifers have all been given Bovishield-Gold 5VL5 + HB, and have been poured. The bulls will have received two rounds of Fusoga-urd for footrot by sale time. Our entire cowherd is fecal tested annually for Johnes to continue to ensure our 100% negative status. All of the sale cattle are negative for BVD-PI and BLV. Herd health performed by Dr. Nate Zieman, DVM - Sheyenne, ND.

Genomic Enhanced EPDs: All registered sale lots have genomic enhanced EPDs by the AngusGS test. Also, all registered lots have their parentage verified.

As the lead son in the first calf crop by Foundation 514, he was impressive on many levels. His pedigree, and individual data pointed him towards being a sire of more growth than “514” and we thought he would compliment well with our breeding goals. He has not disappointed. This is our first calf crop by him and we couldn’t be more pleased. His sons have plenty of muscle, mass and performance. The females he’s sired are real beauty’s. TEX Playbook, a member of the Select Sires line-up, has been used the past two seasons in our operation with much success. We chose him to add a new pedigree and bring in the ever popular Payweight 1682 line of cattle. He proven himself the last two seasons as well worth using in our operation. We so appreciate the gentle disposition, added body depth, and overall good look he stamps in his progeny. His first sons we marketed last year were well received and some of the real standouts, both phenotypically and numerically in this year’s offering are by him. Our first daughters calved this past spring and they have solidified that using Playbook was a positive. They have quality udders, tons of body and depth, and are great mothers. 8 sons sell!

Selection Tools /AbbreviationsExpected Progeny Difference (EPD) The prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability,appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTHCalving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

MATERNAL Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

CARCASSThe genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Marbling EPD (Marb) expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA mar-bling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE) expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the differ-ence in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, onaverage, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) - an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

Beef Value ($B) an index expressed in dollars per carcass, facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance andcarcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial produc-ers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.

BW - Actual birth weight.

205 Wt - Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days of age. 205 Wt Ratio - The percentage above or below average (100=average) a bull is for his 205 day weaning weight.

Gain/Ratio - Pounds per day a bull gains during our test period/The percentage above or below average (100=average) a bull is on his gain test. We are again really excited to offer our bulls for your evaluation. I made the comment last April, I can’t hardly wait to get to market the set of calves we’ve just had born. The consistency and quality runs as thoroughly far through this offering as any line up we have put together. They were weaned the end of September, with yearling weights and carcass ultrasounding happening in mid-February. After their yearling data has been gathered, they are moved across the highway out to their “pens on the prairie.” These are large lots, with a sod base, and hills to climb. When the bulls reach this point of their development, they are being continually backed down on energy to ready themselves for immediate pasture service upon being sold. They will be sound, hard, and athletic. Their ration this past year has consisted of Alfalfa Hay, Oat Hay, Wheat Midds, Barley Hulls, Sunflower Screenings, Corn Screenings, and Corn Silage.

The first Powerpoint son in our 2020 offering and what a stud he is. Lot 3 is a powerhouse, he offers about as much body depth, mass and general power as any bull in the sale. When viewing him from the front the width of chest and forearm muscle expression he exhibits is overwhelming. Likewise, when evaluated from the rear the sheer muscle shape and depth of quarter he possesses is stalwart. Furthermore, he has indexed above average at every performance measure, including a 119 ratio for marbling and a 113 ratio for ribeye. His dam offers a bit of a pedigree outcross as she is sired by Klondike, who came to us out of the Treasure Test bull sale many years ago. Lot 5 is designed to enhance maternal quality rapidly through his pedigree combination of Coalition and his donor dam, Gloria 0406. He is a massive individual in the bull pen. 9 Standout herd bull prospect sired by Coalition. Lot 9 is a really good looking, correct structured, clean fronted, proud made bull with extra muscle shape and expression. He has ratioed above average at weaning and yearling, while scanning one of the larger ribeye’s in this years offering to ratio 115. He posts growth EPDs that rank him at the top of the Angus breed, and he records the highest ribeye EPD in this entire sale offering. His dam is a model Angus female. Sometimes I wonder who makes the final call on what cows should be pictured, his dam should’ve been pictured. The first son in the Capitalist 316 sire group in our sale offering. Lot 12 is a big time performance individual. He was the high indexing bull in our entire calf crop at weaning, grew well to a year and posted marbling and ribeye ratios of 112 and 119. One of the really complete and leading calving ease herd bull prospects in this sale. Lot 13 combines an amazing amount of power, body mass and muscle shape into a genetic package that still offers a +14 CED, a -2.1 BW EPD and a 70 pound actual birth weight. Big framed, performance adding prospect with extra length and muscle. Lot 14 is a Cornerstone son, and he again reaffirms his sire’s ability to sire progeny with explosive growth. He weaned with a 116 ratio off a two-year-old and continued to grow rapidly weighing in over 1300 at a year. Note his 111 ribeye ratio. Another “316” son with a lot of potential. Lot 15 is a low birth EPD bull with explosive performance numbers. He weaned off his mature dam with a 110 ratio and offers added length, as well as marbling genetics. Chloe 153, the dam of 15, is an absolute powerful female. Herd bull potential in this “316” son. Lot 16 is a really stout, heavy built, well put together individual. He has as much muscle expression down his top and over his hip as any bull in the offering. He weaned above average, gained very well over winter, and scanned with one of the largest ribeyes in the sale to record a 117 ratio. Sometimes when we are sorting bulls to picture, we don’t necessarily get all the ones pictured that we should have. Lot 24 falls into this category. He is one good dude. Another Playbook son who is moderate in his frame and really complete in his design. This really deep bodied bull offers added base width and dimension, while also scanning very well for marbling, as he recorded a notable 128 ratio for that trait. Commercial HeifersOur commercial heifer offering consists of primarily the pasture sired end of our heifer calf crop. Every one of these females is a registered Angus with exception of Lot 355, who is a purebred commercial. We have sorted this group down to this uniform group of 55 head. They have been fed and managed right along with all of our other heifers, are freeze branded, bangs vaccinated, poured for lice and have been given their Bovi-Shield Gold 5VL5+HB pre-breeding vaccination.They will sell in a numerical gate cut of 5 or more head starting with Lot 301. Registration papers are available for $150/head.

Coalition 830 is a calving ease son of Coalition with a tremendous phenotype and a herd bull presence. He is flawless on the move, carrying a tremendous amount of muscle shape and mass with ease, exhibiting a character in how he travels that only a few bulls possess. Additionally, his temperament is outstanding and he had a 66 pound birth weight, recorded a 117 weaning ratio and a 113 yearling ratio.
