Mr. Rolland H. Bnshner, Honorary Editor of the .Journal,
had to resign from the Council in Jnly 1952 on necnnnt of his
transfe1· to nnothPr post abronrl and the Society thel'C~hy lost an
energetic member not Oldy from the Council bnt also from the
Society which was much regretted. 'l'he Society, however, was
fortunate enough to secure the service of M1•. A.H.K. Mackenzie of
tho Bl'itish Embassy who inspite o.r: his official duties undertook to
take over the posHion of the Honorary Editor of the JourlHtl.
In the course of t.he yeal' Dr. B.oherl~ L. Pendletm1 had to resign
from the Council and the leadership of the Natural History Section
owing to his approaching departure from Siam. 'rhe Ommcil dncided
that, in view of the wide 1·ange of its activities which included the
issning of an annual Bulletin, a committee he set up'to carry ont
such lluties. The following accepted membership of that oommittee:
Mr. Suldch Nimmanhemin, uew Leaden· of the Natural History
Section.

rr'his Commttteo has duly met to draw np its progratnm€' of
activities.
'l'he Council has also taken into careful considel'ftl;ion t.he fact
that the fihiet.h anniversary of the Society's founding on the lOt.h of
March 1904 will be falling duo next yeal'. One of the proposals for
such an observance is the possibility of reprinting in one volume
some of the materials in earlier numbers tlf thE> .Journal of the
SocietJ'• much of which has become unavailable ~tlthongh continual
demands are being made. A Committee of p1·esent and past editors
of the Journal was appoinLed to study this possibi]it~r. 'l'here may
he also some form o[ social celebration on that date.
During the year 1952, library statisties were as follows:
Visitors (approximately) 300
Circulation
Books recehecl
J·ouruals received

668 180
'I'hn greatest portions of the~ hooks we1•e a gift by Lady Indi'tt
Montri from the !?State of the late Phya Inch·a Montri, ex-President
of the Society. 'l'hese bonks are extremely valuable additions to the
liln·ary.
Exchange of publications with other learned instit.uticms has
co11siderably increased. The. main object of the Exchange Qommittee's
work during the .year under review has been to b1•oaclen tho Society's
fielcl of. exchanges and pa1•tly to resume connections which were inter
rupted during t,he last war. As. a result the number of cnltm•a.l and
scientific, institntici11s on the Society's exchange l~i.st has risen
from 20 to 26 in respect of the .Journal ancl h•om 18 to 22 ·for the

Natural History Bulletin. Several oi' !;he institnt.ions in qnostioil
lacked some of the numbers of the .Tonwal issued dnl'ing the wm·
years, and these collections have been completed.
'l'he Committee has also taken npon itself to boost the snle o:l'
back numbers of the ,Tournai, the Natmal Hist.ory Bulletin and the
Florae Siamensis Enumeratio. As ~t result some 20 , 000 baht:s have
been realised from sales during the last 15 months, and judging by
the interest shown more orders will be forthcoming in the nem•
future. A large number of the earliest issues of' the .Journal are
now unfortunately out of print, but interesting selections can still be
ma<le. 'fhose interested in obtaining a selection should, however,
decide now as the mOJie valuable numbers are fast disappearing. To
facilitate the work, the gallery in the SoC-iety's Home has been pnt
in order nncl ne'v cupboards for the preservation of back numbers
have been pnt in. 'fhe gallery is now also mHthle as a stncly l'oom
if desired.
In November 1952 a new scheme to popnlarise the NaLural
History Bulletin was proposed by the Exchange Oommitcc and sanc
tioned by the Council. As there is little or no material within the
scope of the Society's activities in the Natural History publications
in other parts of the world, it has been difficnlt to establish exchange
connections for the Bulletin. 'l'he scheme in qnestion consists of
findil;lg scientific institutions whose publications a1~e of interest for
g~ne1•al studies of Natural HistOl'Y subjects and obtaining thes13
pubHcatio~s in exchange for the Society's Bulletin. The publications
received are then turned over to the Library of the Ohulalongkorn
University or the Science Society, thus furnishing them with valuable
inatel'inls they wonld othe1•wise not be able to obtain, at the same
tim.e . widening the :field of om Bulletin. 'J'ho execution of this
scheme' is made feasible by the fact that the Society has roughly
fift.y complete sets of the Bulletin on hand, and can well affot•d to
make these exchanges. InCl·easing the number of .the Bnlletln's
readers in this way. will also Jacilitate obtaininig m:atel'ials for the
Bulletin which hitherto hns not been easy. As a result of this

The Council held eleven business meetings dtwing the year:
eight IJlectings were held at t.he Presid.c'llt's house in Pechaburi Road and thece meetings were held at the Society's Home in Bangkapi.
At the end of the year the Society's membership was as follows : Honorat•y 13

making ~1 total of 482 as compared with 475 in 1951, 443 in 1950,
364 in 1949, 343 in 1948, 292 in 1947, 207 in 1946 and 160 in 1945.
The Society acqni1·ed several new members during the year but tho increase was somewhat nffset by a great number of members depar
ting from this country for good. Still the number of members
in 1952 is t;he highest on record.
Tho financial po~ition of the Soeiety continues to Le satisfactory,
showing an excess of receipts over expenditure by Baht 7, 519. 84 inspite of thef:act that the Soci~ty spent Baht 21,752. 7 5 out of its
revenue for i~sning fom: publications in 1952, namely J.S.S. Volume B9, Part 2 (January 1952); J.S.S. Volume 40, Part 1 (July 1952);
J.S.S. Volurno 40, Part 2 ( Decem her 1952) and Natural History Bulletin, Volume 15, Part 1 (September 1952).
