missionElmwood Franklin

is a school that emphasizes high academicachievement,

good study skillsand

positive characterdevelopment.

We set high standards for each child with whom we work, thengive support to enable him/herto meet these expectations. Weexpect our students throughouttheir years here to achievesuccess in becoming self-motivated and in assumingresponsibility for their actions.

The early years of education arecrucial in an individual’s life. Our role is to provide eachstudent with the basic skills tolearn effectively and thefundamental elements ofknowledge which will become thefoundation of all subsequentlearning. Learning how to learn, developing an enthusiasm foracquiring knowledge andcultivating a lively curiosityduring these years sets a life-long

pattern of sound attitudes.

At Elmwood Franklin, we value anatmosphere of genuine respectand courtesy between studentand student, adult and studentand adult and adult. We not onlyset a positive tone to supportour students but also, weencourage faculty, administrationand staff throughout their timeat Elmwood Franklin to developthemselves professionally withfinancial assistance from theschool.

In delivering an educationalprogram to further developmentof the whole child, ElmwoodFranklin stresses the following

• To be a school in which academic excellence exists in asupportive atmosphere so our students are well prepared for their high school in terms of academic and character growth.

• To be a school in which children develop confidence inthemselves, demonstrate respect for others, and assumeresponsibility for their own actions.

In pursuit of its main goals

through the following objectives,Elmwood Franklin will

• Continue a traditional academic program with emphasis on learning how to learn, developing good study and work habits, and fostering creative and independent thinking.

• Provide a varied curriculum with extra curricular offerings to enrich the education of all students.

• Maintain a cohesive faculty of outstanding professional ability and high personal qualifications to serve as effective teachers and as caring adults.

• Communicate frequently with parents to foster a realistic understanding of their children’s academic progress and overall development.

• Continue to support the educational program by providing well-maintained, well-equipped facilities.

• Enroll a student body that is reflective of our diverse community.

the headmaster

remarks from

Thank you very much for your generous supportlast year for our children, for our teachers, and forour mission, now 117 years old. At the school, weare most proud of last year’s giving participationlevel. Almost all of our groups’ participation ratesgrew. Any school in the country would be proud ofan 83 percent parental participation rate. Those ofus who work and volunteer here understand thefinancial sacrifices it takes these days to provide an

independent school education to children. We aremoved by all those in the Elmwood Franklincommunity who believe that young children andearly adolescents deserve a premier educationalenvironment and are willing to share resources toensure that our school can provide such a setting.

This upcoming year, the teachers and administratorsand I will be encouraging the children to make

Page 5: Annual Report 2004/2005

healthy choices in thefollowing areas:Friendships, Fitness,Food and Fun. (We callthese the Four F’s.) Wewill be asking thechildren to becomemore deliberate andinformed and skilled inmaking choices abouthow they treat theirfriends, how they treattheir bodies, and theentertainment theychoose. Aristotle defined ethics as the rationalidentification of the consequences of our actionsand patterns of behavior. The less impulsive ourchoices, that is, the more thoughtful we are aboutwhat we do, the healthier (and happier) we will bein the long run. Thus, the Four F’s are just anotherway of encouraging our children to lead ethicallives.

In a similar way, Elmwood Franklin as an institutionmust make informed and deliberate decisions, forwe are in the process of shaping a new strategicplan. In Aristotle’s sense of “ethical,” strategicplanning is indeed an example of ethical activity. While we are proud of what we have achieved in thelast eight years, it would not be ethical to just lookback and beam. Our community must peer aheadand choose projects and programs that willcontinue to pursue the goals of our mission. A newlower school with a Prep recreational room wouldfurther enhance the individualized learningenvironment. Building new playing fields permitsElmwood Franklin to host home events, encouragemore athletic participation from all children, andsimplify travel schedules for families. Expanding the

current cafeteria allowsmore grades to sharelunchtime together, while also providingroom for increasedstudent and teacherinteraction. We willneed to reflect on thecurriculum andcalibrate it so that itboth prepares ourstudents for thecontemporary worldand pays heed to our

historic educational principles.

When our kids grow up, we know that they will haveto add one more F — finances — to their checklistof decisions. Thank you for making the deliberatefinancial choice to give to Elmwood Franklin so thatwe can continue to teach our children to bethoughtful citizens, and thank you for the countlesshours and endless energy all community membersdedicate to EFS.

Sincerely,

Keith Weller Frome

from the boardpresident

remarks

Time, whose movement is so easily measured (by years, days, hours, and the like) and tracked (by birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones),can also be very hard to accept. When I look at mychildren as the years pass by, I am amazed to seeyoung women when it seems like just yesterday theywere little girls. I am still looking for lower schoolstudents when I am now confronted with eighthgraders. As impossible as this may seem, I also findgreat contentment in what I now see: two youngpeople who have been nurtured, pushed and inspiredto be all that they are capable of being in this world. I see two human beings who have been provided thenecessary tools for a lifetime of learning and, evenmore importantly, have been taught how to treat otherpeople with the respect and empathy that will makeour entire world a better place.

I feel so fortunate that my family has been able toparticipate in the Elmwood Franklin experience for thepast nine years. For over 100 years, Elmwood Franklin

has provided a strong foundation for students, familiesand all of Western New York.

Thank you to all members of the Elmwood Franklinfamily, from the administration to the faculty to thestudent body and their families, for allowing me toserve as the board chair. What could be moreimportant and rewarding to a parent than beinginvolved in the world in which our children exist formost of the day?

Elmwood Franklin will continue to face challenges astime marches forward, but I am confident that the loveand cooperative spirit that exists within the veryessence of EFS will lead it to new and exciting places.

Yours Truly,

Michael Joseph4

The Alumni Council continued its work to develop, maintain, and strengthen the relationship betweenElmwood Franklin School and its alumni.

Two new events were held this year: a breakfast foralumni who are also parents of current EFS students, and another for alumni who are grandparents ofcurrent EFS students. Both were well-attended, andserved as a great way for alums to re-connect,reminisce, and offer their unique insights to thecouncil and the school.

The Alumni Council is working on creating more andmore ways for alums to stay involved — with newendeavors and events that aren’t just aboutfundraising, but about maintaining meaningfulrelationships.

We at EFS are indebted to these dedicated alumni fortheir committed efforts on behalf of our school.

Nels Hopkins will always be remembered—by his family,by his friends and associates, and by the numerouscommunity institutions that benefited from his generosityand devotion. Elmwood Franklin School is honored tohave had such a compassionate man and unassumingleader working on behalf of our mission.

A dedicated member of the Elmwood FranklinCorporation, Nels was a former member of the EFS Boardof Trustees, serving as board president from 1969 to1971. A life long Buffalonian, he was president of themechanical contracting company John W. Danforth Co.,from which he retired as chairman in 1991.

Nels is survived by his wife Jane, their son Dr. L. Nelson III(Bonnie Adam Hopkins ’57), their daughters RobinAmper and Jane Carey ’71, six grandchildren and sixgreat-grandchildren.

At Elmwood Franklin, we teach our students to thinkbeyond today by taking care of tomorrow, and to thinkbeyond ourselves by taking care of others. Such lessonsare reflected in Nels’ dedication to our school, whichserves as both a lasting tribute and a valuable gift.

a weaving“I had always thought of the self as a richly colored tapestrywith each thread significant to the integrity of the whole.”

— Joan Anderson, from the book A Walk on the Beach

I think of EFS as a weaving,The weaving of love, laughter, perhaps even frustration—The range of emotions that encompasses us at each momentAnd the weaving incorporates all of these moments.

When I think of a weavingI think of the moments we put smiles on children’s faces, or perhaps challenge them a bit.I think of the toil, the tears, the aches, the exhilaration andthe exuberance. As we weave at EFS, we build and celebrate our home.

And in this spirit of weaving, of acceptance and inclusion,In the spirit of recognizing all that there is—Not judging or denouncing or even denoting—But recognizing,Recognizing that when one walks into EFS in the morningWhat one does truly matters, As it interacts with all the other happenings of the day andcreates the weaving.

As we weave at EFS, we celebrate our home.We celebrate all who have made that home.As we weave at EFS, I celebrate each and every one of you.Let us celebrate togetherFor one, for each, for every one.For as we weave at EFS,We know that each thread is significant to the integrity of thewhole.

There are many ways to

give to Elmwood

Franklin. While we are

thankful for our donors’

financial support, we

also recognize their

generous contributions

of time, energy and

talent. Headmaster

Keith Frome welcomed volunteers to a volunteer

recognition party on May 25, 2005, an

annual gathering that

gives well-

deserved

applause to our

school’s many outstanding

volunteers.

Ed Walsh was recognized for his

exceptional contributions as

Corporation liaison for the Annual Fund for two years—

both years achieved 100% participation from

Corporation members through Ed’s heartfelt appeals

and thorough follow-up. In honor of his 80th

birthday this year, a seat in the Johnston Theatre

was dedicated with his name.

Ed’s daughter Grace Walsh Munschauer ’70

was also recognized for her efforts as two-

time Annual Fund co-chair. Grace and her

co-chairs, Alison Keane and Archie Glick

’71, were praised for bringing this year’s

campaign to a record-breaking level.

EFS faculty members Pete Johnson, Jenna

Piazza and Kathryn Murray were commended

for co-chairing the auction faculty committee

for five years straight. This trio has been able

to bring in 100 percent faculty participation

and thousands of dollars in faculty gifts.

The auction depends on a legion of hard-

working volunteers. Janine Lipke, Joan Jacobs,

Beth Munro, Lin Blakely, Lisa Hotung and

Amy Appelbaum were recognized for their

continuing contributions as “veteran” auction

volunteers. This year, as in past years, these

individuals put forth truly exemplary efforts.

Also recognized was Mary Rapaport for her

enthusiastic and conscientious service as Parent

Council president.

We appreciate the support of all of our volunteers and

the value they bring to our school!
