It is with great pride and appreciationthat we present to you the 2007 AnnualReport for the American TransplantFoundation. In this, our first annualreport, you will find a review of our accomplishments since our inception,as well as our vision for the future.

The Foundation has been able to forgenew ground in advancing support fororgan and tissue donation. Makingorgan donor registration more main-stream has been a primary goal, whichhas been approached by identifyingnew ways for people to register theirintent to be a donor, such as when fil-ing State income taxes.

Our efforts have also included com-munity-based education and outreachprograms. By reaching out to ethniccommunities, we are able to customizemessaging that resonates, and whichprovides important information aboutthe medical facts leading to the disparity in needing, and receiving, life-

saving transplants among ethnic groups.Supporting medical advancements is another important compo-

nent of the Foundation’s goals. On September 29, 2007, theFoundation pledged a gift of $1,000,000 to endow a Chair ofTransplant Surgery at the University of Colorado Hospital. Thisendowment provides perpetual funding to transplant programs, brings additional national and international exposure to recruit toptransplant surgeons and provides an ability to dedicate research tothe field.

On behalf of the board members, staff and volunteers of theAmerican Transplant Foundation, we wish to thank you, our donors, corporate sponsors and foundations for your continuedcommitment.

HistoryFounded in 2005 by Steve Farber, Heidi Heltzel, and Dr. Laurence Chan, the American Transplant Foundation is a tax exempt, 501(c)(3), charita-ble organization. Following his own transplant experience, Denver attor-ney Steve Farber was inspired to create a foundation that would bringadded value to the transplant community.

Our PhilosophyOur philosophy is to coordinate collaborative efforts to promote theadvancement of organ and tissue donation. In applying this methodol-ogy, the Foundation has successfully facilitated a number of programsand events in collaboration with other organizations to promote thecause.

GoalsThe American Transplant Foundation has identified three goals toachieve its mission: to develop more mainstream opportunities for peo-ple to register as donors, to provide education and awareness throughcommunity-based outreach programs, and to support medical andclinical advancements in transplantation.

When I race around the track inanother 400 meter dash, I don’t thinkmuch about my racing heartbeat. Butmy mom does.

I came into the world on October 26,1990. But the moment of joy most par-ents dream of became the nightmareall parents dread. I was less than oneday old when the doctors discovered Ihad a rare, life-threatening heart condi-tion called hypoplastic left heart syn-drome, which basically means the leftside of my heart didn’t develop right. Itwas untreatable.

I was rushed to another nearby hos-pital, but there, the prognosis wasn’tany better. The doctors told my momto take me home, that there was noth-ing they could do to help. They told herI was going to die.

My mom isn’t the kind to give up eas-ily, so as the days passed, she keptlooking for help. Oddly enough, shefound it in People Magazine wherethere was an article about a baby whoreceived a heart transplant. Back then, those procedures were still pretty rare. But my mom was willing to do whatev-

er she could, so she took me to Loma Linda University MedicalCenter in California.

Twenty-six days later, a baby boy named Danny gave me my sec-ond chance. He died in an accident, and his parents had thecourage to see past their own grief to donate his heart to me. Now, 18 years later, no one would probably guess that my life’s

beginning was so tenuous. These days, I’m just a normal teenag-er—except that I really like school. I think I want to become a psy-chologist so I can help families with the struggles that affect themevery day. Most days I hang out with my friends, and I also enjoy

curling up on the couch for another episode of The Bachelorette. Ilove my 12-year-old brother Bryce, but he drives me crazy some-times. And there just isn’t anything better than a big, hot plate ofItalian food.

But every time I take my transplant medication, I know I’m a littledifferent—and a lot luckier—than many. I got a second chance, andI want that to mean something. So when my friends are hangingout at the mall, my mom and I are often somewhere giving a pres-entation about the importance of organ donation.

My new heart is strong, and I keep it that way by running in trackand field. Since 2000, I’ve competed in the Transplant Games allover the world, from Thailand to France. My mom embarrasses mewhen she brags about my medals, but I’m proud of them, too. I’vesent many of my medals to Danny’s family. It’s the least I can doconsidering the life that they have given me.

It’s hard to believe that someone had to die in order for me to live.I think about that a lot. And I’m trying to make that gift mean some-thing bigger.

I hope I succeed.

The Foundation has successfully connected with the community toincrease donor registration and education, and to raise funds tosupport these efforts. All donations have come from individuals, corporate sponsors and foundations and are directed towardachieving our three primary goals that will ultimately reduce thetransplant waiting list. Those goals are to develop mainstreamopportunities for donor registration, to provide education andawareness programs, and to support medical and clinical advancements.

Donor Registration through State Income Tax FilingsThe Foundation is making organ and tissue donor registration moremainstream by developing new methods and opportunities for individuals to register their intent. By thinking outside the box toidentify such methods, the Foundation worked with the ColoradoDepartment of Revenue to include a donor registry form in theState income tax booklet. Colorado tax filers now have the opportunity to register as a donor when they fill out either theState-printed tax booklet or file online. This successful pilot projectdemonstrated an increase in registrations that were directly linkedto the tax booklet.

Electronic Donor Registration Enabled through Legislation The Foundation participated in the drafting and passage of House Bill07-1266, Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act. Introduced during theFirst Regular Session of the Sixty-Sixth General Assembly, theFoundation’s Executive Director, Heidi Heltzel, testified in favor of thelegislation before both the House and Senate Committees on Healthand Human Services. Sponsored by Representative Anne McGihonand Senator Brandon Shaffer, the legislation was enacted by the legislature.

As the first significant update of the existing Act in 20 years, the legislation strengthened first person consent and clarified the ability toregister as an organ and tissue donor online by recognizing electronicsignatures. It also provided clarifications to who may make andreceive anatomical gifts, the process for procuring organs, and reinforced the prohibition on the sale or purchase of an organ, an eyeor tissue of a human being.

The Foundation promoted organ and tissue donation awarenessthrough a variety of community-based outreach and educational programs.

Diabetes ExpoDiabetes, the leading cause of chronic kidney failure, has been increasing in the United States at an alarming rate. To help educatediabetes patients about the effects of the disease on their bodies , theFoundation had a booth at the Diabetes Expo in March of 2006 and2007. Volunteers answered questions about how diabetes, and one’s management of the disease, can affect whether or not they will need atransplant in their lifetime. An estimated 5,000 people attended theexpo, many of whom stopped by our booth.

National Donate Life Month – AprilThroughout the month of April, in both 2006 and 2007, the Foundationreached out across Colorado to raise awareness.

In 2006, the Foundation enlisted the support of United States SenatorKen Salazar, Congresswoman Diana DeGette, Denver Mayor JohnHickenlooper, and then Colorado Governor Bill Owens. Each participatedin individual, exclusive press conferences at area landmarks to convey the importance of the cause. Area residents were invited toattend registration drives and to learn more about organ and tissuedonation, blood donation, bone marrow donation and living donation.

In 2007, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter provided a Public ServiceAnnouncement to promote organ and tissue donation that was aired onCBS-4 in Colorado. As part of that initiative, the Foundation partneredwith Safeway to educate the public about organ and tissue donation.Throughout the month of April, Safeway distributed over 10,000donor registry cards along with donor information at each of its 123pharmacies throughout Colorado.

Hispanic Heritage MonthThe Foundation partnered with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the American Diabetes Association and Donor Alliance to provide targeted education to the Latino community during Hispanic HeritageMonth in September. Coordinated press releases, materials andbooths at the festival in Denver’s City Park provided streamlined andwell-rounded messaging. Information was geared specifically towardthe Latino community with written materials provided in both Spanishand English.

Colorado Colfax MarathonLeading a healthy lifestyle is such an important part of our messaging that it was a natural fit for the Foundation to have apresence at the second annual Colorado Colfax Marathon held inMay. Safeway donated booth space at the Colorado ConventionCenter where Foundation volunteers answered questions and distributed information to many of the athletes and visitors whocame to the hall for race registration.

Aspen Institute Health ForumThe American Transplant Foundation was a Forum Partner to the AspenInstitute’s inaugural Health Forum, held in Aspen, Colorado, October3–6, 2007. More than 100 thought leaders in medical science andhealth policy — including Nobel Prize recipients, prominent NationalInstitutes of Health officials and other top experts — probed the mostchallenging issues and exciting developments in modern medicine andhow they can be used to bring about better health for everyone.

This public forum provided attendees the opportunity to exchangeideas with some of the foremost leaders in medical science and health. It is one of the few places where a lay audience can learn about med-ical science and its vital implications for their lives, investments, andpolitical interests.

The Foundation collaborated with the Institute on development of thepanel discussion Organ Transplantation: Advances, Barriers andEthics. Sir Roy Calne, who represented the Foundation on the panel, isan internationally recognized transplant surgeon and pioneer who participated in revolutionizing transplant through the implementation ofimmunosuppression. Calne was knighted by the Queen of England in1986 for his contributions to the field of transplantation.

Additionally, the Foundation hosted Art, Science and Transplantation,an exclusive art exhibition and cocktail reception with original works bySir Roy Calne and Nora Chase. A diverse selection from Calne’s collection was showcased, including emotional portraits of his transplant patients, portraits honoring noteworthy medical colleagues, and scenes of the operating room. The art exhibition and receptionwere generously sponsored by Novartis.

Our events not only raise money to support our programs, but by theirvery nature provide awareness and education to support our mission.

2007 EVENTS:

Ride of Your LifeIn conjunction with National Donate Life Month, the Foundation

hosted the premier showing of the documentary film, Ride of Your Life, about Olympic Medalist and AmericanTransplant Foundation board member, Chris Klug. Klug’sstory is amazing because just 18 months after his livertransplant he won a bronze medal in snowboarding at the2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, making him thefirst transplant patient to win an Olympic medal.

In this documentary, Klug tells the story of his own transplant while tracking the experiences of two Denver-area women as they go through the transplant process. This emotional film, showing the transplant experiencethrough the eyes of patients, interlaces exciting actionfootage from Klug’s World Cup Tour.

Shown at the historic Paramount Theater in downtownDenver, local stand-up comedian Sam Adams entertainedthe crowd for the opening act and locals’ favorite band OpieGone Bad performed a concert after the film.

In the year ahead, the following projects will address the AmericanTransplant Foundation’s overarching goals to reduce the nationalwaiting list:

■ Providing education and awareness through new and expanded community-based outreach programs;

■ Fulfilling the commitment to raise $1 million for the endowment; and

■ Implementing more advanced mainstream methods of registering to be an organ donor.

The Foundation will pursue education through community-basedoutreach programs by participating in various community events, symposia and outreach. For example, the Vail Symposium will hostthe Foundation to conduct a public forum on transplant tourism, where a panel featuring national and international speakers will discuss the issues surrounding this hot topic. The Foundation willalso participate in community events such as the Diabetes Expo andthe Colorado Colfax Marathon. Additionally, the MulticulturalStrategic Outreach Committee is gearing up to promote targetedcommunity-based education and awareness to provide informationabout the medical facts leading to the disparity of AfricanAmericans and Hispanics needing and receiving lifesaving transplants.

The primary fundraising project for the year will be hosting another benefit concert where legendary band Crosby, Stills & Nashwill perform at the Wells Fargo Theater in Denver. In addition to theconcert, individual donor development and other fundraising projects will be pursued.

Finally, the Foundation will continue to work with Colorado’s stateofficials to develop more mainstream methods of registering to bean organ and tissue donor. This project includes expanding thestate income tax filing program as well as utilizing other state public information avenues.
