Opening up new markets is an exercise in the art of bridge-building. Trade fairs build bridges to the rest of the world. To succeed in business tomorrow, you have to take the right decisions today. Trade fairs deliver results for business – every time. In short, trade fairs shape the future.

The international fl agship trade fairs organized by Deutsche Messe AG are mirrors of the market – and annual summit meetings for the industries concerned. But staging trade fairs that act as inter-national beacons for our key industries is no easy business. Successful trade shows are the result of sustained hard work, driven by the right ideas, winning concepts and real enthusiasm. But even this is not enough by itself. The success of our company is dependent on the success of our cus-tomers – exhibitors and trade visitors from all over the world. Last year all our events ably demon-strated their effi ciency as marketing instruments. CeBIT, HANNOVER MESSE, DOMOTEX, BIOTECHNICA

In December 2007 the Board of Management at Deutsche Messe AG was able to look back on a year of successful achievement. As a result of strong growth across the portfolio of events and a whole series of effi ciency gains in internal pro-cesses, the company reported profi ts of approxi-mately € 3 million.

In 2007 Deutsche Messe AG staged a total of 111 trade fairs worldwide, including 54 outside Germany and 43 hosted events. A total of 36,800 companies worldwide took the opportunity to showcase their products and innovations at these events – an increase of 3,600 on the previous year. The number of visitors rose from 2.6 million in 2006 to 3.0 million in 2007. Meanwhile the net display area grew by a substantial 15 per cent to 1.7 million square metres.

Foreword The business year 2007Further steps on the road to success

and LIGNA all reaffi rmed their position as cata-lysts for innovation, cutting-edge technologies and trends – just like our many hosted events, such as EMO, AGRITECHNICA and others.

With our expanding portfolio of trade fairs staged outside Germany – in Australia, India, China, East-ern Europe and Turkey – we are building bridges for our exhibitors into the fastest-growing eco-nomic regions of the world. The events organized by Deutsche Messe AG continue to set interna-tional standards because our customers give us the most important thing of all: their trust and confi dence. Confi dence in our fl exibility, confi -dence in the all-round excellence of our service delivery, confi dence in our capacity for innovation. Our goal is to continue showing our customers that they are not only in good hands with us – they are in the very best of hands.

The main priority throughout 2007 was a contin-uing focus on the consolidation of the achieve-ments of previous years. Deutsche Messe AG in-creased its turnover by 22 per cent to € 286 million. At the same time borrowings for the 2007 fi nan-cial year were reduced from € 155 million to € 129 million. Earnings before interest, taxes, deprecia-tion and amortization (EBITDA) rose by 20 per cent year on year to € 43 million.

In addition to the continuing expansion of existing events, the main priority in 2008 will be the devel-opment of new growth potential. That growth will come from a signifi cantly increased commitment to the company’s overseas trade fair business, as well as from further expansion of its online activi-ties through the “Internet 2010” program, which will set a new benchmark for the German trade show industry.

DOMOTEX was once again a great success in 2007. Attracting a strong international presence, the leading trade fair for carpets and fl oor coverings continues to head the global league table of events in this sector. Around 80 per cent of the partici-pating fi rms in 2007 came from abroad, while the proportion of foreign visitors rose to 60 per cent. The quota of senior decision-makers attending DOMOTEX is particularly impressive. As 70 per cent of the trade visitors were employed at manage-ment level, DOMOTEX 2007 once again provided the industry with a central platform for new in-vestments and business contacts.

Exhibitors: 6,153Visitors: 479,651Net display area: 280,202 m2

2007 signalled a turnaround for the world’s most important event for the digital industry. With a dramatic 10 per cent increase in visitor numbers, CeBIT 2007 was able to build on its position as the world’s leading trade fair for the ICT industry. Out of a total of 480,000 visitors (10 per cent more than in 2006), 102,166 came from outside Ger-many – from over 100 countries in all, with the Asian and North American markets particularly well represented.

6,153 exhibitors from 79 countries, including 170 from the offi cial Partner Country Russia, ensured total coverage of the ICT product spectrum. CeBIT has always been noted for its high quota of trade visitors, but this trend was even more marked in 2007. Manufacturing industry professionals constituted one of the largest visitor groupings.

DOMOTEX 2007/contractworld 2007A solid foundation for growth

CeBIT 2007Driving the digital industry

As well as all the high-class presentations pre-pared by exhibitors at their stands, visitors also enjoyed an exciting program of special displays, lectures and events aimed at a professional au-dience. Major crowd-pullers, as always, were the presentation of the Carpet Design Awards for hand-made carpets and rugs, and the European Team Floorlaying Competition.

Designed to foster creativity and the exchange of ideas, contractworld in Hall 4 is a “show within a show” at DOMOTEX – and a major annual event in its own right. In 2007 it once again attracted hun-dreds of architects, interior designers, planners and design professionals from all over the world.

Good grounds for optimism, therefore. In short, DOMOTEX remains the industry’s No. 1 event of the year.

The CeBIT SME Forum saw a massive 34 per cent increase in visitor numbers – the highest number yet. It was a similar story with “Planet Reseller”, the dedicated platform for dealers and distrib-utors, which reported record attendance in 2007.

CeBIT is a showcase for the innovations that will change the way we live tomorrow – whether it be new VoIP services and mobile TV, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray or IT security and more powerful tele-matics systems. Planned investments of around € 11 billion and the biggest and best congress pro-gram in the history of the show – once again, CeBIT has demonstrated that the future of the ICT industry begins in Hannover.

HANNOVER MESSE is the world’s most important technology event – and the 2007 show proved the point once again. Orders worth billions were placed at the show or planned subsequently, thus testifying to a new mood of confi dence across industry. More than 241,000 visitors passed through the turnstiles (an increase of 16 per cent since 2005), and some 30 per cent of these came from outside Germany. Even more signifi cantly: 73,000 ticket-holders were fi rst-time visitors, which means that HANNOVER MESSE is success-fully reaching new target groups in large numbers. More than 76 per cent of the visitors were involved in their company’s buying decisions or employed in a managerial capacity.

LIGNA performed outstandingly well again in 2007, reaffi rming its position as the leading inter-national trade fair for the wood and forestry in-dustries. Under the tagline “The World of Wood”, LIGNA offered a global public a wealth of innova-tions combined with countless opportunities to make new business contacts. With 1,832 exhibitors from 49 countries and more than 107,000 visitors, the show broke all previous records over its fi ve-day run. Trade visitor numbers and visitors from abroad were also signifi cantly up on previous years. In terms of professional background, the 2007 show attracted a higher proportion of vis-itors from the timber trade, the woodworking in-dustry, the furniture industry, the panel products industry and the skilled trades sector.

LIGNA 2007Wood – a classic growth industry

The fi ve days of the show generated a total of 5.5 million business contacts. And the proportion of foreign exhibitors at the show in 2007 was even higher than the 30 per cent foreign visitor quota. Out of a total of 6,521 exhibiting fi rms, just over half – 3,271 – travelled to Hannover from 62 coun-tries around the world.

One of the top themes of the show, along with en-ergy technology, automation, power transmission and control, research and development, was ener-gy effi ciency. As a result, the leading international trade fair Energy, which is now an integral part of the HANNOVER MESSE line-up, experienced a mas-sive surge in visitor and exhibitor numbers. Just as popular was the World Energy Dialogue, which was attended by many senior fi gures from the international energy industry, leading politicians and research scientists. With over 1,000 separate special events scheduled, HANNOVER MESSE had already cemented its reputation as the world’s most important technology convention.

Key areas of interest at LIGNA 2007 were the “fair within a fair” Handwerk, Holz & mehr, tim-ber-frame construction, energy and surface treat-ment technology. At the various forums hosted by experts, trade visitors were able to benefi t from the in-depth knowledge and experience of industry professionals. But it was the clear mood of optimism throughout the industry that really made LIGNA 2007 an event to remember – “the best LIGNA yet”, as many exhibitors put it.

More exhibitors, more visitors, more internation-ally representative: as the world’s leading trade fair for the metalworking industry, EMO has con-tinued to build on its impressive track record. With 166,500 trade visitors in senior decision-making positions it recorded growth of four per cent compared with the previous event, which ran for two days longer than EMO 2007. More than 36 per cent of visitors came from outside Germany, representing over 75 nations in all – clear testi-mony to EMO’s unrivalled international appeal as a trade show platform.

According to a survey of exhibiting fi rms, EMO generated orders worth more than € 4 billion. At

As the leading trade fair for the European biotech industry, BIOTECHNICA 2007 welcomed visitors with a new four-part display concept. The exhibi-tion section was the centrepiece of the show, with fl oor space up by 4 per cent to more than 13,000 m2. Some 2,500 participants attended the various conferences, which were staged for the fi rst time in the Convention Center. Here Deutsche Messe AG took on a new role in 2007 as the co-organizer of two conferences, “German Biotechnology Days” and “White Biotechnology”. With 1.6 per cent more exhibitors, an eight per cent increase in visitor numbers and four per cent more display area booked, BIOTECHNICA underlined its position as the industry’s business platform of choice.

A 31 per cent increase in visitors and a massive 45 per cent jump in exhibitor numbers – as a meet-ing place for the international agricultural indus-try, Agritechnica leaves all other shows far behind. Organized by the German Agricultural Association, the event attracted some 340,000 farmers and farming professionals to the Hannover Exhibition Grounds, including 70,000 from outside Germany. 2,188 fi rms from 36 nations presented a compre-hensive array of machinery, equipment, spare parts and accessories. These record-breaking statistics testify to the enormous appetite within the agri-cultural industry for state-of-the-art technology and forward-thinking concepts.

the same time the industry’s fl agship trade fair affi rmed its pre-eminent position as a forum for the acquisition of new customers. Over a third of the visitors had come to EMO for the fi rst time in order to learn about the latest technical solutions developed for the metalworking industry. Exhibi-tors at EMO can also be sure of reaching their key target groups: from the car industry and com-ponent suppliers to mechanical engineering and metalworking in all its forms. Strong business demand worldwide, satisfi ed exhibitors, visitors in the mood to invest – no wonder EMO is viewed by the industry as the top business event of the year.

The concept behind PROMOTION WORLD, the trade fair for promotional products and incentives, has proved a winner, and the event is now a fi rm fi xture in the industry calendar. Because it is stag-ed in parallel with HANNOVER MESSE, exhibitors have a unique opportunity to reach a host of mar-keting and sales professionals in the space of a few days. In 2007 PROMOTION WORLD attracted an audience of 36,165, of whom 79% were classed as trade visitors – and therefore potential buyers. Nearly a quarter of this audience – 24 per cent – came from outside Germany.

The 23rd dental informa in 2007 once again brought together dental practitioners and technicians – from the dental surgery to the dental lab. 3,687 visitors and 205 exhibitors came to compare notes and learn about the latest innovations in dental treatment and technology. The most popular dis-plays included products and IT solutions for preven-tive treatment, CAD/CAM-aided restoration and progress in 3D radiography. Exhibitors and visitors were of one mind: the need to keep up with rapidly evolving changes in dentistry makes dental informa an absolute must for all dentistry professionals.
