Overview An initiative that began in 2008 as a small project by college students took the shape of a formal

organization in 2010 by the name of Reach Out and Pass It On foundation aka ROPIO Foundation.

ROPIO began its journey with the children of a slum called old G point ,locally named khand gaon,

aged between 5 and 20. Everything from tuitions in subjects studied at school, re enrollment of

drop out, basic English and communication classes to workshops in music, art & craft, dance and

sports were conducted. Within no time the team was assisted by college students and working

professionals who came to volunteer.

A beautiful bond was created with the families of G point

and the volunteers of ROPIO and all programs ran

smoothly. Classes and workshops for children and women

were held throughout the day with occasional tea breaks

and chit chats with the women and men of the community.

Overview In November’10 the slums of Old G Point were demolished, and the people were not

given apt and adequate warning. This caused a huge disturbance to everyone who

was a part of that slum. Families were displaced, children were unable to attend

school and unavailability of a shelter topped the list of problems. However with the

combined efforts of all the volunteers at ROPIO and the children and families of G

Point we pulled through. After almost a week of struggles and suffering, we were

able to provide continued support through a learning center to as many children we

could reach out to. We took up a temporary shelter at Satya Niketan

where for the next 3 months we catered to 25

children. From food and accommodation to tuitions

and workshops whatever support we could provide we

did.

The Children continued to study and despite facing

such hardship so close to their exams they made it

through to the next class with flying colors.

Educational Activities

We re-created a classroom learning structure for the children

from the slum of G Point in Kali Bari Marg in the comfort of

their own surroundings. Classes spanned from 0700 hours to

1700 hours covering apart from academic sessions, their extra-

curricular activities and overall growth

Mornings were dedicated to physical well-being. Most mornings

we found ourselves enjoying a game of football or badminton

with the children and volunteers altogether

After a quick breakfast break, the children would re-assemble

into their respective batches divided on the basis of classes,

for some intensive but interactive sessions covering their

academic syllabus.

To ensure an optimum retention, the classes were structured

to balance academics with extra-curricular activities, which

proved to be good energizers that kept the overall

environment light yet fruitful.
