Highlights 2010

annually by the foundation started by the aristocratic Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn family to young people who have shown outstanding social commitment. This year, 14 prizes amoun-ting to a total of 24,000 euros were awarded.----------------------------------------------------

Tenth Anniversary of the Millennium Development Goals ----------------------------------------------------From 20 to 22 September 2010 heads of state from all over the world met in New York to discuss the progress made and challenges encountered so far with regard to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Jugend Eine Welt partner Fr. Alencherry SDB was critical in his assessment of the summit meeting’s outcome: “At these conferences a lot of promises are made. But for our work and especially for the people actions are more important than words. It is only when they actually receive the aid they are promised that the people will be able to escape from pover-ty.” As a former Mission Councillor he was responsible for coordinating all the develop-ment projects of the Salesians of Don Bosco worldwide and was confronted with the practical aspects of implementing the Millenni-um Development Goals on a daily basis. Since April 2009 he has been head of Don Bosco Bangladesh. “Enormous efforts are still required to achieve the Development Goals by 2015”, explains Fr. Alencherry. 1.4 billion people – around 20 per cent of the world’s population – still live in extreme poverty. Many children are barred from exercising their right to an education and 72 million children receive no vocational training. Jugend Eine Welt supports a local team as it plans, implements, coordinates, links, evaluates and adapts the activities in each of the Don Bosco project locations with the aim of increasing the effectiveness and sustainability of Don Bosco’s efforts still further.

At the same time, other local groups engaged in development policy activities benefit from the Don Bosco team’s know-how through the services provided for them in the field of project management.----------------------------------------------------

Haiti – Education as the Key to the Future----------------------------------------------------Following the powerful earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010, Jugend Eine Welt drew on all its resources to provide assistance as quickly as possible. It is solely down to the solidarity shown by the Austrian population that the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Don Bosco Sisters were able to help the earthquake victims and ensure that schools could reopen quickly with lessons held in temporary class-rooms in wooden huts and tents. “By reopening the schools we’ve been able to restore some sense of routine and normality to the children and adolescents“, said Sr. Rose Monique Jolicoeur FMA during her visit to Vienna.

“Education is the key to Haiti’s development. It’s important to raise a generation of young people who actively contribute to their country and free themselves from their present depen-dency through their own efforts.“ To ensure school education on a long-term basis, Jugend Eine Welt has started a fund for the payment of teachers’ salaries.----------------------------------------------------

“Sale für alle” awarded Filippas Engel----------------------------------------------------Since 2009 children from Vienna’s 3rd district have been pouring into the “Sale”. The cour-tyard of the Salesians of Don Bosco’s student hostel is filled with kids playing football, rom-ping about and laughing. The leisure activities on offer are aimed at children and adolescent from the immediate vicinity. The project was started by former Jugend Eine Welt volunteers. “The team at Sale für Alle (“Sale for everyone”) is a striking example of the way voluntary work abroad has opened people’s eyes so they see their local reality more clearly“, says Reinhard Heiserer, director of Jugend Eine Welt.

On 25 September 2010 the “Sale für Alle” team received the “Filippas Engel” (Filippa’s Angel) award. Since 2003, this prize has been awarded

On 31 January 2010 Jugend Eine Welt held the second “Street Children’s Day”. Young people all over Austria mark 31 January, the com-memoration day of Don Bosco, the patron saint of young people, by carrying out activities that draw attention to the living conditions of street children and raise money for Don Bosco projects. Children and teenagers cleaned shoes, a job frequently done by street children, or sold tea and muffins to raise money.

According to figures published by the World Health Organisation WHO, a worldwide total of 33 million children and adolescent live on the streets. UNICEF even puts the figure at 100 million. Poverty and war are examples of two phenomena that force young people to begin a life on the streets. Parents cannot afford to feed their children, former child soldiers such as those in Sierra Leone and Liberia have been torn from their families and uprooted, or HIV/AIDS has left the children and teenagers orphaned. Together with the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Don Bosco Sisters Jugend Eine Welt helps these children and adolescent.

With its educational campaign “Champions for

South Africa – Join the Game” in 2010, Jugend Eine Welt highlighted the lifes of children and adolescents in a slum in Cape Town. Together with partner organisations in Germany, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Poland and South Africa, Jugend Eine Welt developed information material and two computer games. The interactive computer games, one aimed at eight to twelve-year-olds, the other at thirteen to eighteen-year-olds, gave young people in Austria the chance to discover for themselves what strategies their peers use to survive in a township and what everyday problems they face.

The high point of the project was the visit of Brian and Nkosane, two social workers from our partner project in South Africa. They visited schools and youth groups in Austria and explained the work they do. This meeting with another culture was a unique and wonderful supplement to the virtual encounter in the computer game.

Where does the moneycome from?

A look at the funds received clearly shows how the people in Austria expressed their solidarity following our appeal for support for the people in Haiti after the disastrous earthquake. The increase in overall receipts of over two million euros is almost entirely due to this tremendous support. Donations from private individuals, companies and various campaigns amounted to more than one million euros – an increase of 32 per cent.

Where does the money go?

In the year under review a turnover of more than 3.5 million euros (an increase of 57%) was achieved in collaboration with our project

partners. The distribution of funds shows very clearly that the additional funds received in 2010 were used directly for project work. For a complete presentation of projects funded by us in 2010, go to: www.jugendeinewelt.at/Jahresberichte.

Fair Investment

It is not always necessary to donate moneyto give people in the countries of the Southnew perspectives. The loaning of capital orethically sustainable investment of one’sown capital are also meaningful ways ofhelping. We currently offer the following products:
