guided by our vision of ‘giving hope and saving lives’ the Fight Cancer Foundation has continued to move forward within a difficult economic climate.

• The Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (est. 1990) lists 174,883 potential donors and is internationally-linked, providing access to more than 10 million potential donors worldwide. the registry has given a second chance of life to 2,544 patients.

• Fundedby theFightCancerFoundationand gifted to the royal Melbourne hospital, the world renowned Rotary Bone Marrow Research Centre (1994) continues to research leukaemia and genetic blood disorders.

• InconjunctionwithTheRoyalChildren’s hospital and Murdoch Childrens research institute, the BMDI Cord Blood Bank (1997) has collected, frozen and stored 10,000 cord blood units and released the 908th life saving cord blood unit.

• BMDI Rotary House (2003) in north Melbourne provides 13 self-contained apartments for patients with cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses, along with their families, and has been a home away from home for 452 families.

• TheFightCancerBack on Track program (2005) enables primary and secondary students living with cancer to continue their education during long absences through treatment and recovery.

• John Opie House in hobart (2008) is a 20-room accommodation centre that has accommodated 600 patients and carers.

• Construction is underway at the Albury Wodonga Accommodation Centre, and will provide for 30-unit patient and carer accommodation, with stage 1 due for completion by the end of 2012.

as part of the AusCord network of cord blood banks in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the BMDI Cord Blood Bank, banked its 10,000th cord blood unit in 2011, providing potential ‘ready to use’ transplant tissue for patients needing a bone marrow, stem cell or cord blood transplant who are

unable to be matched with a suitable donor.

Up to 9000 Australians are diagnosed each year with blood cancers or other related diseases, many requiring a transplant.

the BMdi Cord Blood Bank, in association with Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, the Royal Children’s Hospital, and Ronald McDonald House Charities Melbourne, was established in 1997 honouring robbie Lodder, who passed away aged 11 in 1991 after a battle with Chronic Myeloid

Leukaemia.

through the BMdi Cord Blood Bank, Fight Cancer Foundation’s mission of giving hope and saving lives provides a second chance of life for patients in australia and overseas who require a transplant.

the Cord Blood Stem Cell Research Laboratory was established in 2008 as the research arm of the Cord Blood Bank. the prime aim of this group is to undertake research into improving the use and understanding of cord blood stem cells for cellular therapies. this type of translational research brings

together basic science with clinical outcome.

With cord blood transplantation increasingly being used as a frontline therapy for both children and adults with haematological malignancies and other blood or metabolic disorders, being able to prospectively select the best cord blood units for transplant patients will potentially benefit all patients

undergoing cord blood transplant in the future.

STAyING CONNECTED WITH SCHOOL AND FRIENDS IS IMPORTANT AND GIvES A REAL SENSE OF PURPOSE AND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE.

each year more than 600 australian children are diagnosed with cancer – many of whom are students. treatment and recovery can result in months and possibly years away from school. Staying connected with school and friends is important and gives a real sense of purpose and hope for the future.

now, in its seventh year, the Back on Track program provides support to school-aged children living with cancer and allows them to stay in touch with their schools and friends.

as experienced school teachers, the Back on track coordinators work with families and schools to develop support plans that meet

the educational, social and welfare needs of the students and assist with their transition back to full time schooling.

Students who have benefited from Back on track come from all educational institutions, varying from large city schools to remote rural communities. the program is tailored to suit the individual needs and circumstances of each student.

Schools and families report that the program coordinators are able to understand and deal with the many issues that arise due to cancer treatment and absences from school.

Cancers of the blood, leukaemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma, affect people of all ages and are the third largest cause of cancer death in australia. Currently, most chemotherapy is toxic and not curative. translation of research is needed to create

better clinical outcomes.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital has a longstanding commitment to research and clinical care of blood cancer. as hosts of the largest bone marrow transplantation service in Victoria, they perform approximately 80 transplants annually. The Bone Marrow Research Laboratories, with the support of the Fight Cancer Foundation, have provided valuable insights over two decades into the

underlying causes of blood cancers.

in our newly established ACRF Translational Haematology Laboratory, we plan to utilise basic science knowledge by applying this to samples from patients, in order to create

new pathways of treatment.

With the generous support of the Fight Cancer Foundation, we will establish the first Phd student in translational haematology. the $200,000 grant provided by the Fight Cancer Foundation will provide a stipend for the scholar and will also be used for the ongoing support of haematology research in

the laboratory.

this important research is a collaboration between The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and The University of Melbourne, and is a significant project of the newVictorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

australian patients to search international registries for the most suitable donors.

TheAustralianBoneMarrowDonorRegistrywasestablished in1990 inconjunctionwith theFightCancer Foundation (formerly the Bone Marrow donor institute) to help people diagnosed with leukaemia or other life threatening blood disorders and has provided a second chance of life to 2,544

patients unable to find a bone marrow match within their family.

Research continues to further the application of bone marrow and cord blood transplants with the expectation that these vital stem cells may radically reform the treatment of many other life

threatening illnesses.

the Fight Cancer Foundation, together with the support of the Rotary Club of Albury North, Zonta Club of Albury Wodonga and Lions District 201V6, is developing a 30-unit accommodation centre for patients and carers who need to visit hospitalsinAlburyorWodonga.This$5.5mproject will provide a vital piece of health infrastructure for the region and outlying communities.

February 2011 saw the Fight Cancer Albury Accommodation Centre Appeal official launch, with a donation of $100,000 from rotary, Zonta and Lions.Therewasgreatsupportfortheproject,with grants from the Federal government of $1.5m and the new South Wales government of $750,000.

Stage 1 of the building works have commenced comprising 20 motel-style units with ensuites, communal kitchens and lounge areas.

BMDI Rotary House in north Melbourne provides accommodation to families, many with the patient

undergoing a bone marrow transplant and requiring lengthy stays close to the the royal Melbourne and royal Children’s hospitals.

during the year BMdi rotary house was a “home away from home” to 50 families for an average 4-6 months. the house received a welcome refurbishment with painting, new carpets and replacement furniture.

John Opie House in hobart was home to 230 patients and carers during 2011. Furnishings were updated in each room, providing comfortable and affordable accommodation.

our vision to provide cancer patients and their families with a caring and supportive sanctuary, and assist with better health outcomes, continues as we work towards providing more affordable accommodation centres throughout australia closetomajortreatinghospitals.

We congratulate our Volunteer of the Year Mrs Moya Hughes, Manager of the Fight Cancer Foundation Drysdale Recycle Shop.

Moya has managed the shop for 14 years and has developed a great rapport with customers and other volunteers. She moved to drysdale from Bendigo more than 16 years ago and shortly after lost her beloved

husband harry, to cancer.

“once you’ve lost someone through cancer, you feel you want to give something back,” said Moya. “i’ve found friendship and comfort with the wonderful women who volunteer for the Foundation and i love chatting with customers. When you meet people whose troubles are worse than your own, it grounds you. it is very gratifying to know how the help you give others through your work is appreciated. i think

We greatly appreciate Moya’s dedication and valuable contribution.

after a long association with BMdi, John was appointed a Board Member in 2008.

he’s a former national director of the advertising Federation of australia and deputy Chairman of Young & rubicam australia. today, John is the Managing

Partner of Catalyst international, which in turn is part of StW – australia’s largest

marketing communications group.

tony was appointed a Board Member in 2008. tony gained extensive experience

in healthcare and technology at accenture (previously andersen Consulting) as the

Managing Partner for the healthcare practice in the asia Pacific region,

then overseeing accenture technology Ventures’ operations in australia and accenture’s Corporate development

in australia and nZ. tony is a member of the australian institute of Company

directors, CPa and aiM.

Leonie is a management consultant specialising in commercialisation and

new business start-ups in the technology sector. Leonie underwent a bone

marrow transplant in 1989 for CML. Afterrecuperating,Leoniejoinedthe

Bone Marrow donor institute Board and was honorary Secretary of the Board

from1992to1995,rejoiningin2009.at this time Leonie also convened the Leukaemia Family Support group and

served on the ethics review Committee.

tony was appointed to the Board in 2010. he is an honorary financial

adviser to the royal australasian College of Surgeons, and honorary finance

director of the australian Print Workshop. in addition he has a number of company board appointments. tony is a Chartered

accountant.

DavidjoinedtheboardoftheBoneMarrow donor institute in 1999 and was appointed Company Secretary in June

2009. david became involved with BMdi after his son received a bone marrow transplant in 1996. david has special

responsibility for the support groups and providedprojectmanagementadviceforthe construction of BMdi rotary house.

david is a commercial architect.

Sophia has been a Board member of the Bone Marrow donor institute since 1991.

Sophia is the Chairman of the Fight Cancer Foundation and BMdi Business

development Committee. With a 35 year career in advertising, marketing and Pr, Sophia has been actively involved with

allthemajorfundraisingevents.Sophiawas appointed to the position of director, Marketing and Business development for

the Fight Cancer Foundation in 2007.

Fay is a founding member of the Bone Marrow donor institute and has

held the position of Secretary from 1990-1992 and 2001 to June 2009,

when she was appointed deputy Chairman. Fay is the chairman of the

red Ball committee. Fay was executive director of BMdi from 1992 until her

retirement in 2001. Fay previously held positions of associate director, Company Secretary & administration Manager of several private and public companies.

eric has been a Board Member of the Bone Marrow donor institute since 1997 and Managing director since 2006. eric has 30 years experience in the finance industry with extensive experience in humanresources,salesandproject

management. eric is also a member of the BMdi Cord Blood Bank Management

Committee, Cord Blood national Management Committee and australian

education sectors. Currently working with teach For australia, her previous roles

appointed to the Board in 2011.

income from donations increased significantly due to direct mail campaigns, and there was specifically an increase in donation revenue for the albury Wodonga accommodation Centre project. Income from Trusts and Foundations and interest was also markedly

higher than in the prior financial year.
