We cannot say that we have not been informed, indeed warned, about the changes ahead for the disability sector. A time is coming soon, where we will need to abandon our reliance on direct government funding, a system that we have had many years of perfecting to ensure NADO’s fi nancial stability from year to year. The Board of NADO have discussed and researched ways to respond to the new environment, where clients are customers, making their own decisions on what services they want, how often they will take up that service and from where they will purchase it.

An important part of our research, was to seek solutions and ideas from our own teams through the Action Learning process, led by David Rosenbaum completed this year.

I speak on behalf of the Board, when I congratulate the Action Learning Teams for their efforts and forward thinking. From an operational perspective, many of the recommendations they put forward have been accepted and in the process of implementation.

Key areas of change included the restructure of the management team to bring greater operational support to line management as well as releasing key managers to work on strategic changes and new business opportunities. As well, we redefi ned individual roles in areas such as senior management, client liaison and customer service and have commenced the structural changes that will open centres to become more fl exible and responsive to individualised planning.

Further, Person Centred resources are being developed to support people with disabilities and their Carers both on-line as well as in NADO Connect, our new shop front in Penrith CBD. Internally, we are investing in and upgrading our quality assurance program, as well as our client information and fi nance systems that will transition

our organisation to self-funded readiness, and prepare the way for the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

I would like to thank the Board of NADO 2012; Rhonda Burke, Jo Ridley, David Cretney, Ray Dyer, Owen Rogers and Jenny Lo Cascio, for their commitment to NADO, and their willingness and ability to respond to important challenges of this time.

I would also like to thank Denise Heath and the leadership team for working on the practicalities and implementation of change in this dynamic and positive organisation. It is clear to the Board that these changes are being implemented ethusiastically and cooperatively, and we are impressed with the team’s progress.

The Board of NADO also wishes to thank the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care for their continued support to NADO and their leadership of sector change as well as Penrith City Council for their partnership approach to joint community programs.

We have also appreciated the support from our local Federal and State parliamentary members, David Bradbury, Rosa Sage and Tanya Davies who have each contributed to NADO’s success and profi le and in particular, Stuart Ayers who successfully advocated for signifi cant grants to enhance our service capacity. We thank you.

NADO is a well connected organisation, with depth in skills and resources. We see this as a time where we will grow and evolve with our community, and we look forward to a positive future for all.

NADO has a proud history and a strong record for its work in the community. Maintaining a strong service culture is of primary importance, but we are in a time of immense transformation and our focus must also be balanced against community expectations as well as infl uencing future systemic changes.

Successfully transforming the culture and processes of NADO to adapt to self-directed and self- managed options involves a person centred approach to services and recruitment as well as systems of accountability. Supporting the cultural change, Action Learning Teams comprised of staff drawn from all locations and roles, analysed, discussed and modelled how NADO would need to evolve successfully to meet future need. I thank those teams for their interest and efforts and particularly thank Kristie Findlater and Amanda Carr for their formal presentation to the Board and Don Ferguson, Regional Director of Ageing, Disability and Home Care in May this year.

With NADO’s growth, we felt that this would also be the right time to refresh our logo and in doing so expand its potential for a new direction.

NADO Connect, our new hub in Penrith CBD, was born of our heightened focus of connecting people with disability to opportunities in the community. NADO Connect offers a unique space where people in the community can call in to research their plan of supports on-line, fi nd out about NADO services or hold planning meetings. A new role at NADO Connect, created to assist people with their self-managed funds was taken up by Ramani Regis, new to NADO, coming to us with extensive hands on experience of the self-directed funding system in the UK-.

Our Community Program previously based at Belmore St, Penrith, moved to a beautiful property in the Lemongrove area of Penrith to accommodate our need

for outdoor areas and improved indoor spaces. The Disability Library was also relocated under a partnership agreement to the Penrith City Council Emu Plains branch, where the community can better access its resources. I would like to thank Penrith City Council for their support of NADO and for the resources and collaborative work on community events such as the Nepean Disability Expo.

Last year, we had hoped to bring together a compilation of NADO’s history. Unfortunately, we were not able to engage with enough people from those early times, and without the richness of those individual experiences, we felt unable to properly tell the NADO story. I would like to thank those that did offer their support and assistance; your efforts were not in vain as we have now established a collection of historical documents that will be maintained for the future.

The NADO team continue to show their amazing talents and strengths, this year John Corradin was announced as “Outstanding Support Worker of the Year”, by the Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability. John refl ects the NADO team spirit and we are so, so proud of his achievement.

Rhonda Burke was successfully nominated for a NSW Carer’s Award, acknowledging her life-long efforts as a carer as well as her long term role on the Board of NADO, with many of those years in offi ce bearing roles, this year as Vice President.

This year, Phillip Menzies was recruited to the role of Community Programs Manager. Phillip worked at NADO 12 years ago, but left then to take up new challenges with family and other management roles. His return has been a welcome reunion, and continues the thread of our history with our future.

This is a good point to thank all of the people involved in supporting NADO; families, employees, volunteers, peer organisations and the community. It has been a rewarding time, working closely with Brooke Wilkie, Phillip Menzies, Brigitte Sirocic, Jannine Merriman, Suzy Baker and Anthony Turnbull, as we lead and manage signifi cant physical and cultural change; a work life requiring resilience, humour and well developed problem solving

skills. They would join me in thanking their coordinators and support teams for their resilience, humour and their client focused attitudes. Thank you to all.

I would also like to congratulate Brigitte Krstanoski for her continued support of Carers through regular meetings and advocacy. It is mostly through Brigitte’s efforts that we maintain awareness of Carer’s needs and their great contribution to the fabric of our community.

We value our continued strong relationship with our major funding body, Ageing, Disability and Home Care and the support they have given to assist with our change management processes.

NADO’s relationship with our community is a position of strength that will enable even greater opportunities for people with disability, their carers and families into the future.

It seems we never have a quiet moment here at NADO, with every year bringing its own excitements to enjoy, challenges to overcome and the need to fi nd positive solutions on a daily basis – especially in the fi nancial sphere.

NADO received total income of $5,094,383 during the year, of which $5,069,162 was used to cover expenses. I am extremely pleased to report an overall surplus of $25,221 – an improvement of $13,455 over 2010/11. This result includes an operating surplus of $15,822 ($6,017 defi cit in 2010/11) and fundraising income of $9,399. This outcome is a testament to the fi nancial vigilance of each staff team and NADO management, given the many changes to sites and programs that were implemented throughout the year.

NADO has continued to fund improvements to our sites and upgrades of both equipment and facilities as and when needed. Therefore, at 30th June 2012, an amount of $60,023 for leasehold improvements was expensed within the year. While this is certainly a signifi cant expense, it clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing quality services for our clients within appropriate, well resourced and pleasant venues.

The management team has continued to monitor staffi ng, with staff entitlements being reviewed and adjusted regularly. National deliberations regarding award increases are closely watched, however, this was not a major fi nancial impact during the 2011/12 year. Throughout the year, the total of $3,837,790 for labour costs represented 76% of all expenses across the organisation.

NADO also continues to show a very healthy Balance Sheet (see the Statement of Financial Position). With total Assets of $1,497,769 and total Liabilities of $1,162,264, NADO has an accumulated surplus of $335,500. This amount is an increase over the previous

year of $25,221 and represents an accumulation of surpluses from previous years, this year’s surplus including fundraising carried forward.

As Treasurer, I am always interested to see the level of Cash Assets ($1,005,455 at 30th June 2012) as this is what we have available to cover our immediate costs or short term liabilities. I am reassured that we defi nitely have the resources to cover any contingencies that may arise. Also, the Board has reviewed the amount of $361,798 provided for Staff Entitlements and we believe that this is the correct and appropriate fi gure required for the purpose.

This has been a year of learning and preparing for major change in providing for Person Centred programs and services. I’m proud to report that NADO management and Board have not fl inched at this challenge and we have fully researched the fi nancial and service implications for NADO and our clients. I believe we have the right team to implement these changes and to do so within budget guidelines.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Denise Heath, Brigitte Sirocic and Nick Gill for their outstanding support and efforts to assist me to perform my task of Treasurer during the year.

NADO ConnectCommunity organisations embrace and nurture all of its stakeholders; people with disability, their carers, families and friends, staff, volunteers, businesses, governments and politicians. Each person connected to NADO plays a part in its vision; we are a wholistic organisation embracing a person centred philosophy.

NADO CONNECT is a vibrant new place in the heart of Penrith where people with disability, their families, carers and friends and others who are professionally involved in supporting people with disability can enquire about our service options, access computers to research other service options or meet to design and develop self-directed plans.

Investing in our Team In a person centred environment, our team excels. Not only through their personal attributes but their willingness to learn. We believe that staff development will improve the service we offer. Our people will be better resourced to assist and advocate for people with disability and their families in the community. Continuous learning matures the way we do our work from a personal perspective to a broader understanding of all factors involved. Study groups pictured.

Team BuildingTeam building does just that. It builds friendship and respect between people who work together. The Amazing Race around Penrith drew the community in as well, with stops for clues at various locations such as Bunnings, Wendys, Multi Lock, McDonalds, Aqua Golf, a great initiative that showed our great links with the Penrith business community.

Youth Week 2012Speak Out, supported by Penrith City Council through a grant of $500 was a small project involving young people with disability talking on radio about their dreams, hopes and concerns. What became evident in those interviews was the positive, can-do attitude of all of the young people interviewed, the message to listeners was clearly to follow your dreams.

NSW Carers Award Rhonda has been caring for Andrew for approximately 26 years fi nding great joy in caring for her son, making sure he has everything he needs. This dedication, love and compassion as a Carer is not unique to Rhonda, but in Rhonda’s case she also makes time for others in the community, despite the time devoted to her caring responsibilities.

Rhonda has a busy and sometimes stressful home life with her caring responsibilities and health issues but has performed as an ongoing Board member of NADO since 2000. She has undertaken all offi ce bearing roles and is currently the Vice president. Rhonda attends all local functions on behalf of NADO and brings information back to the Board on local issues. She also provides valuable comment on NADO programs from a Carer’s perspective. Rhonda is a great team member and a great Board member, but most of all she is a great Carer and mother.

Rhonda Burke, Vice President of NADO presented with a certifi cate for her NSW Carer’s Award 2012 from Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayers MP.
