medical education has taken a great leap forward with the creation of the Bethesda College of Health sciences.Bethesda is now one of the few hospitals in florida with aCollege of Health sciences that is licensed by the floridaCommission for independent education. in may 2014 theschool graduated its first class of nurses.

Bethesda Hospital West cared for more than 75,000patients through admissions, emergency Departmentvisits and surgeries.

• Center for Women and Children – Both the maternityand labor and Delivery unit have been renovated toinclude a 10-bed obstetrics High-risk unit staffed 24/7by an in-house Board Certified oB/gyn physician andhighly skilled nurses to provide the best outcomes.

Gertrude “Trudy” Willms

Gertrude “Trudy” Willms began volunteering at Bethesda in1976. for nearly 40 years, she was a dedicated and constantpart of our Bethesda family. she served two terms as auxiliaryPresident, 1985 - 1988; and again 2006 to 2008. she alsooriginated the Bethesda memorial fund, serving as the fundPresident for many years.

During her time of service at Bethesda, trudy logged anunprecedented 82,459 volunteer hours. she worked in all different areas of the hospital and touched many lives withher kindness, caring and welcoming smile. the BethesdaHospital foundation even began their annual Women of graceluncheon in honor of trudy and her exemplary service to hercommunity.

the Bethesda family will truly miss trudy Willms as she is avalued part of our hospital’s history. may her kind spiritcontinue with us into the future.

Maxine Battjes

Maxine was born in Holland, michigan. she and her husbandDonald raised three sons in grand rapids where he had hisbusiness. in their later years maxine and her husband had awinter home in Boynton Beach. through her many activities,friends and physicians, she became involved with Bethesda.maxine and Don sr. gave a donation that created the Battjesvascular institute at Bethesda. each year the Battjes vascularinstitute sees approximately 6,000 patients.

maxine was a donor to Bethesda for many years. shesupported Bethesda Day at Quail ridge and the BethesdaBall. Her sons Don, Jr. and Doug always accompanied her tothe Ball.

maxine was a true friend and philanthropist to Bethsda.

We want to recognize and commemorate two notablewomen for their generosity to Bethesda over many decades.

Both of these wonderful women are a testament to the human spirit and the kindness that resides in all of us.

Schmidt College of Medicine Graduate Medical

Education (gme) Consortium, welcoming an inauguralclass of 36 internal medicine resident physicians.

as a not-for-profit community hospital, Bethesdahas established a long-standing tradition of advancingmedical education in our community. Programs fornursing students, radiography technicians, third andfourth-year medical students and podiatry residentshave paved the way for the gme program.

“Partnering with fau’s gme program was the nextlogical step,” explained Bethesda Health President andCeo Roger L. Kirk, faCHe. “this milestone marksthe beginning of our journey to become the mostcomprehensive teaching hospital in our area.”

The NeedWith nearly 1 in 4 of Palm Beach County’s residentsbeing over the age of 65, the need for more physiciansin our area is growing. in addition, florida, a statethat boasts 6,200 medical school graduates annually,only has 3,500 residency-training positions available for

new physicians. research shows that medical doctorsare most likely to stay and practice in the state wherethey have completed their residency training. thatmeans that nearly 2,700 physicians are completing theirresidency training, and thus establishing their practices,in other states.

“if we are to meet the future healthcare needs of ourcommunity, we must attract more quality physicians tocare for them,” continued Kirk.

The VisionWith 12,000 square feet of newly appointed space,Bethesda has laid the foundation for a state-of-the-artteaching tower.

By design, the gme program will grow to morethan 100 resident physicians in the specialties of internalmedicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery andemergency medicine. to accommodate these newphysicians, Bethesda is planning to build an academictower to house the program at Bethesda Hospital east.

the tower will include classrooms, an auditorium withinteractive conferencing capabilities, locker rooms, alounge and an outpatient internal medicine clinic.residents will have acess to an amphitheater for grandrounds and academic conferences, a high-tech medicallibrary and a surgical simulation lab. “inspired by thehumble beginnings of nationally recognized institutionssuch as mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic,we envision building a premier gme program to attractthe best medical talent in the country,” added Kirk.

The Communityas with other acclaimed teaching hospitals, communitysupport is vital. the Bethesda Hospital foundation haslaunched a fundraising campaign dedicated to establishinga premier gme program to attract prominent medicalleaders from around the nation and the globe.“investing in the gme fund will help bring thevery best doctors, treatments and research to thedoorsteps of our families, our friends and our neighbors,”said Bethesda Health Ceo/President, roger Kirk.

tHe magnolia soCiety was established in 2003 torecognize 12 donors who fostered the spirit ofvolunteerism by contributing $500 to help underwrite theWomen of grace (Wog) luncheon and to support theCenter for Women and Children at Bethesda Hospitaleast. today, the magnolia society has reached over 140members and is considered the largest contributor to theWomen of grace luncheon as the Platinum sponsor.

the funds raised through the magnolia societymembership have benefited projects within Bethesda’sCenter for Women and Children. the magnolia society isresponsible for the purchase of a transport incubator aswell as multiple “giraffe” incubators that are critical piecesof equipment for a premature infant’s first days of life. thegroup funded the renovation of the hospital’s maternitydepartment including patient rooms and the creation of anobstetrics triage unit for the treatment of women withhigh-risk pregnancies.

most recently, many of our magnolia society memberscame together to support the Parent education Center ofthe Center for Women & Children. Bethesda now has adedicated place to offer classes and support to newparents. a dedication ceremony will take place for thebeautiful new space later this year.
