About the River Food Pantry The River Food Pantry is Dane County’s busiest food pantry, offering free

groceries, meals, and clothing to individuals and families in need in Dane

County. Beyond nutri:onal assistance, The River provides a warm, welcom-

ing family atmosphere where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,

encouraged to find the support they need and given the opportunity to

share what they can with others.

The River serves 600 Dane County families each week, distribu:ng over

37,000 pounds of food. In 2014, The River Bakery job training program put

11 people back to work.

2014 Milestones and Achievements

The River Food Pantry • An addi:onal pantry session and community meal were added on Thursday night, bringing the total

number of pantry sessions to five per week and the total number of community meals to three.

• The River is staffed Wednesdays from 9am-6pm, to accommodate dona:ons and to prepare for two

pantry sessions on Thursday.

• A $23,000 grant from Madison Community Founda:on on behalf of an anonymous donor made the

purchase of a refrigerated truck possible. The River can now safely transport perishables, including

milk, meat and ice cream, all year round.

• The River hosted the 5th

Annual Harvest Dinner for Hunger, raising $36,000.

• The River was one of 75 food pantries na:onwide to receive a $20,000 grant from Walmart for facility

and equipment upgrades. Thank you to everyone who made this possible by vo:ng for The River in

Walmart’s Holiday Pantry Makeover.

• The River Food Pantry distributed an average of 37,000 pounds of food each week in 2014.

The River Bakery

• The River Bakery closed out 2014 with $33,720 in sales.

• The River Bakery received $73,500 in grant support.

• 11 people found employment as a result of the training they received through The River Bakery.

What does The River mean to me?

Being on a fixed income (and with today’s ever-

rising prices), it enables me to actually pay-off

my bills and s:ll be able to eat.

Not just eat, but good, nutri:ous, wholesome

food as compared to macaroni and cheese and

potato chips.

I especially appreciate the large variety of pro-

duce, which I normally don’t buy because of the

prices.

The River means a lot to me, and not just food…

the people here are the friendliest bunch of

smiling faces one would ever care to meet.

Genuinely happy and always willing to do any-

thing to help.

Knowing that The River is here for me is a com-

for:ng feeling.

-Chuck

“We found out our oldest daughter had Lupus.

We knew we would just need to keep stretching

our budget. Not only does she need regular medi-

ca:ons and doctor’s visits, she also needs to mod-

ify her diet, which has put extra stress on the gro-

cery budget.

Like most parents, we want to provide our chil-

dren with a good life, making good memories to-

gether.

We do our best to not eat a lot of processed

food…we were surprised to find [The River] has a

lot of fresh food. The River in some ways has real-

ly improved the food around our house.”

A pantry family of 5

“I am an out of work father of four. My wife works

full-:me and I am a full-:me student. In between

looking for work and raising a family on one in-

come, it’s hard to stretch meals. Even though I never

need to get clothes, the food really, really helps.”

-Daniel

“Every Thursday, I come to this place where I

receive not just food but also a lot of love. Every-

one is so nice, and I feel their sympathy. I feel

like we are all a big family that takes care of each

other. Thank you for your help. Thank you for

your love and kindness. Thank you for helping to

make the world a beLer place.”

-Anonymous

Impact of Programs & Services

“This River Bakery job training program is such a

wonderful opportunity; it opens doors to a new ca-

reer for those with no resources to change their cir-

cumstances. Thank you so much for the chance to

begin doing something I enjoy.”

-Emme, River Bakery Graduate
