Secretary Preface We present you this Annual Report for 2014/15. This is the 90th report since the formation of the club in 1925. I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters who without them would make it financially impossible to fund the running of this club. We have a section dedicated in this report to them, so our members can support them and the community are made aware from were our support is coming from. I would like to thank Rae Lawson for her dedication in this area. I would like to acknowledge that I missed out Peter Oborn in the Open Surfboat Bronze medallist last report and wish to put it on record. I apologise Pete. Again we had great support in grants from West Beach and Districts Community Bendigo Bank, Federal Government, State Government and Charles Sturt Council, who continue to be big supporters in Surf Life saving. I would also like to thank the local community for their support in patronage of the Ocean View Bar this past season. This business has been a huge learning curve for the management and staff of the club and I believe is a wonderful venue for a function, or dining or having refreshment looking at a magnificent view. I welcome another new acquisition to the club this season “CRUSTY” our new All Terrain Vehicle which we obtained from a 50/50 grant from BRP. I would like to thank Andy Dewar (Jane Brays’ father) who attended the service in Gallipoli for 100th Anniversary ANZAC landing and laid a plaque at the memorial on behalf of the club. Presidents Foreword It is with pleasure that I present to you the Henley SLSC Annual report for 2014/2015. It has been just over 20 months since lifesaving services commenced from our new club rooms and after another solid summer season on and off the beach we have maintained our vision of “No lives Lost” on our beach. This year the Henley SLSC completed 16 rescues, 14 first aid treatments and 751 preventative actions for our immediate and wider community, a fantastic effort from all our Patrol Captains and Patrolling Members who all contribute to the success of the Henley SLSC. The skills and knowledge of our members is second to none and is something we should be proud of especially when we use our expertise on the beach or in our day to day lives where it may change the life of someone forever. The Life Saving Services continue to be the strength of our club with our new and existing members receiving approximately 600 new awards or award updates in the past year. I must pay special mention to Andrew Henry, Peter Oborn, Paul Leonard, Roy Menner, Stefan Starkey, Emma Cassidy, Andrew Kelly and Tim Cavanagh who have delivered the training, and without their help we would not be able to meet our Patrol obligations. If you are keen to give some time back to our club please consider being a trainer or assessor as we always need more help in this area. The Juniors had another great year and it was fantastic to see the future of our club on the beach and in the water every Saturday, I always enjoy seeing our children learning new things or meeting new friends and at all times with smiles on their faces while having fun with their mates. Well done to Roy, the Junior committee and all the mums and dads who help each weekend to ensure this important aspect of our club flourishes. The Competition area continued to be strong with the Henley SLSC finishing in 7th place overall in the state competition. This year we had our biggest touring team ever at the 2015 Aussies at North Kirra where we came home with 5 medals, the most memorable being our first every medal in the Boat area, a silver for the U23 girls crew. Well done to all our competitors and officials who have represented our club in competitions and special thanks to Sonja Smith for her massive job in ensuring that all our competitors are nominated in time and in the correct events for the carnivals and titles. As always we could not function if it wasn’t for the generosity of our sponsors who this year donated a substantial amount of money to our club, but that doesn’t mean we can relax. The money raised from our sponsors and fundraising goes straight into providing lifesaving equipment and with the majority going into paying off our building loan to ensure we don’t leave a debt for our next generation of life savers. We can never underestimate the contribution our sponsors make to our club and we thank all of them for their ongoing commitment to our club. Our major fundraising event for the year, The Big Row was a great success again and plans are already under way to make next year, our tenth even bigger and better than before. If you have never been across to Stansbury for the Friday training session with the local school students or the early morning departure of the boat crew on Saturday then put your hand up and come over, it is a great couple of days. This year the Henley SLSC went green, not only did we receive a recognition from the Charles Sturt Council for having the best Waste Management strategy of any business in Henley Square but we also completed the installation of a 30 kw solar system to ensure we reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs, Special thanks to the West Beach Community Bank and State Government who donated 50% each of the cost, without their help we could not have completed this initiative.


Our Oceanview bar and Restaurant is turning out to be a favourite for the locals but we really need to see more of our members using the facility more frequently, please consider our club when you go out next for a meal or a drink on the weekend. I would also like to acknowledge the 80 or more members, mums and dads of our club who in some cases not only complete their patrolling duties but they also put their hand up to help every week as committee members, trainers, coaches, officials, junior age group leaders, membership registration, maintenance, clothing, transport, and manning the BBQ’s without your help we could not survive so thankyou and please continue with the great work. Recently we completed a review of our 2015 Strategic Plan which identifies our objectives for the next 1 to 5 years. It was great to see many of our members turn out on the night to provide input into this important aspect of our clubs future and direction. The enthusiasm in the room will very soon spread to the beach and I am sure we are in a very good position going forward where we will serve our community as we have since 1925. Club Captain Report The 2014/15 season saw a significant rise in the number of rescues performed by Henley members during our patrol and water cover commitments, 16 in total. We are also aware of a large number of resuscitation and first aid cases being conducted by "off‐duty" Henley members outside of the Surf Life Saving environment in public or in their workplaces, showing the broad reach of our club's impact and the valuable life skills which Surf Life Saving provides. I dare not imagine what may have transpired if Henley lifesavers had not been available in these situations. This season I was lucky enough to have the support of two overlapping Vice‐Captains who made my role so very easy and provided myself and our club with such incredible support. After Courtney Smallacombe had finished organising all of the patrol rosters and equipment ready for the start of the season, she unfortunately had to leave us for new opportunities in Melbourne. Coincidentally, Peter Oborn was just returning from time overseas and was eager to get back involved. Pete was offered the Vice‐Captain role for the remainder of the season and quickly started having an impact. Thank you Courtney and Pete for all of your effort, as we certainly couldn't have accomplished so much without your combined efforts. I also want to thank all of our members for their flexibility as we embraced a number of changes this season, including changes in layout of the storage sheds, changes to some of our equipment and changes in policies which, for example, saw lifejackets becoming mandatory during IRB operation. Our members have taken all of this change on board without complaint and made it a very easy task for those trying to implement these changes. Probably the biggest change to our patrol services this season was the late change to our patrol hours which saw our patrols shift to begin at midday rather than 1pm; coupled with an increase in the number of dates we were rostered to patrol over the season, it's no surprise that the total number of patrol hours performed for Henley increased significantly from 4,831.25 in 2013/14 to 5,398.25 in 2014/15 ‐ a 12% increase. There's more review needed on how we structure patrols to handle the extra duration so we'd welcome any suggestions or feedback on how you felt this impacted your experience on patrol this season.

It's important to note that all of the growth in Henley's patrol hours was in our traditional beach patrols and that there was actually a small decrease in hours spent performing water cover for our Juniors and other activities ‐ the demand on our beach patrols has increased and we need to ensure that we're all turning up for our rostered patrols, finding substitutes if we cannot attend and putting up our hands to volunteer when people are looking for help. Looking to the season ahead, you may notice the new Mercury IRB motors which have arrived to replace our tired Yamaha motors and others will notice a new set of handheld radios supporting Surf Life Saving SA's impending change to a new digital radio network. Please remember to take care of this equipment to ensure it lasts us as long, if not longer, than the equipment it's replacing. These items have been purchased through a number of different grant opportunities as a result of the hard work of people like Katheryn Curnow and Kevin Fitzgerald finding and applying for grants all year round; their hard work makes this new equipment possible. The other item of change in play for the coming years is the work that's being done to update our club's Strategic Plan, Constitution and By‐Laws. A number of people have spent significant time researching and updating these important documents as part of a wider project through Surf Life Saving SA to bring our club some improved structure and better guidance ‐ which becomes of much higher importance as our club membership grows in number. The primary goal of all of this work is to bring more transparency and clarity to the operations of the club and so I wanted to make a personal plea to all of our members to take on all of this change with a positive outlook, speak up and provide any feedback where things are working well or where you think they need improvement or put your hand up to take on any roles available in the club's various committees; be a part of the change and really be a part of the club. Vice‐Captain’s Report The 2014/15 patrolling season commenced on Saturday 11th October 2014 and concluded on Monday 6th April 2015. We had a total of 11 patrol groups (but only 10 Patrol Captains) and to the Patrol Captain’s – thank you for striving toward providing a professional service, in accordance with our patrol agreement. The Patrol Captains were: Aaron Lewis, George Symeonakis,, Regan Smallacombe, Beck Forest, Hannah Sitters, Tom Lanyon, Stefan Starkey, Bianca Parker, Steve Horsman, Mark Travers Thank you to all of you. When the season began, I had handed over the Vice‐Captain role to Courtney Smallacombe, who worked with the Club Captain, Tom Lanyon, to put together the patrol roster and patrol groups. During the season, Courtney relocated to Victoria and I returned to Henley, and consequently resumed the role. Thanks very much Courtney for setting everything up and of course, Tom Lanyon for coping with the disruption in the VC role. We were fortunate enough to receive a grant from BRP for $10,000 to help purchase a new All Terrain Vehicle, and Crust Pizza Torrensville sponsored the remainder. This vehicle which is named “CRUSTY” has been a great asset to our patrols and replaced the rusted out and aging Rhino. Towards the end of the season, attendance at patrols waned. For some patrolling members, it seemed that patrol commitments were not given the priority required. Unfortunately, on a couple of occasions, the rostered patrol was unable to meet the minimum requirements of four Bronze Medallion holders on patrol. Next season, please remember that by failing to meet your commitments you are not only letting your fellow patrol members down, but also your club and in the bigger picture, the community. We should all be immensely proud to wear the red and yellow patrol uniform and the very serious near miss incident which occurred in the vicinity of Henley Jetty on Saturday 3rd of January 2015, should demonstrate to us all the need to remain alert and vigilant. In the interest of skills maintenance, the Club Captain, Stefan Starkey and I instigated a series of rescue scenarios during patrols. Each patrol received an unannounced visit and were tasked with dealing with a ‘mock’ emergency incident. Generally, patrols reacted well to these scenarios and it provided useful discussion on all aspects of lifesaving.


This season, in addition to the regular patrols, Henley provided water cover for Wave Warriors and a number of open water swims and four SURFCOM radio room shifts. Henley members also volunteered to raise much needed funds for the club by once again providing obstacle marshalling services at True Grit (Night Attack) and True Grit (Caudo Vineyard). Thank you to all the members who got involved and flew the flag for Henley during these additional activities, and especially Stefan Starkey for organising these important fund‐raising activities. As we look toward the 2015/16 patrolling season, I urge you to meet your rostered patrolling commitments or find a suitably qualified substitute; failure to do so, puts additional, unnecessary pressure on fellow club members. Chief Instructor Report This season the emphasis was to consolidate previous efforts and further enhance all aspects of training. At the start of the season, preparation and delivery continued to evolve benefitting all involved, unfortunately however we did not achieve our destination. Once again an initial concern was our lack of suitable trainers. With 6 experienced trainers not available for differing reasons, the remaining group continued to provide training for a variety of awards. On top of training new members, trainers are also required to further develop members’ skills and experience and also assist members in maintaining all of their awards. Prior to providing training for members however, trainers are required to attend annual trainer updates for each area they wish to train. This in itself is an enormous commitment and should never be underestimated by club members or leaders especially considering all trainers also have significant involvement in other club functions/activities. There is always enormous interest from new members/families, and again this season, the interest far exceeded our ability to provide sufficient training. While there were multiple awards delivered, there are still many people who require immediate attention to ensure interest remains. Feedback obtained from new members identified commitment after their initial training and issue and solutions to these concerns should be a priority.

The emphasis this season for member development was in the power craft area (IRB crew and driver). Significant progress was made, including training of IRB trainers and assessors, ensuring this important aspect can provide suitable training into the future. Other award delivery unfortunately suffered due to this priority, and is now an area of attention.

IRB Crew Training

Each season all members’ awards need to be updated (proficiency). Currently with over 500 awards that require annual updates and only a handful of qualified trainers this is an ongoing challenge. Continually developing procedures, resources and methods of completing this, will ensure all members continue to be highly skilled to perform our primary function. To the small group of dedicated members who gave up many hours to assist with the many aspects of training during the season I and the club is extremely grateful. Your contribution to the club and community can often be underestimated, however is necessary so we can provide a safe aquatic environment and help members no matter their individual aims and club expectations. Active After‐School Community Program Henley Beach Primary School continued their relationship with the club through the Active After‐School Program. Once again the program consisted of Seven 1 hour sessions (Monday 3.30pm‐4.30pm) in term 4 2014. The program is a joint commitment with the Federal government, with 20 students selected through a combination of interest and criteria including:

Have “non” active students participate in a program Attract new junior members to the club Introduce youth in the community to Surf Life Saving Educate youth in the community on beach safety/culture Provide a safe and healthy after school activity.

The program is conducted by senior club members that are current accredited communities’ coaches. The club has several members qualified for this who generally share the coaching, however due to many reasons the entire program this season was left to 2 coaches: COACHES:

Participants are exposed to all aspects of Surf Life Saving with a specific skill/experience each week. Through the program the club attracted a few new families as members and also further developed our relationship with the community. Personally I would like to thank Rachel and Nikki for their efforts and professional delivery ensuring my involvement was minimal. Most programs at the club also require water cover and once again Ed Ashton and Siobhan Roe completed this task every week. I would also like to thank Steve Cornish (SLSSA) and Greg Lawless (Henley PS) for their assistance and support with the program. This season the Henley SLSC was the only club in South Australia prepared to continue with the program, further demonstrating the club’s commitment to the community. Wiltja Program The WILTJA Program is a residential program that is designed to enable indigenous students to access a secondary education program. The students come from more than twenty remote communities across the Central and Western Desert regions of South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Once again Henley SLSC has participated in the Wiltja program through students being actively involved in aspects of the club. Over the season the group attended fortnightly during school terms to be involved with weekend club activities, patrols, maintain previously obtained awards and/or achieve new awards. This is an aspect that needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency to ensure programs such as this continue in the future. Moving forward we would like to introduce this group to more activities available through surf lifesaving and hope to see some participants wearing our competition cap in the near future. Awards Gained Since the inception of the club in 1925, we've awarded the Club Championship based on a hotly contested event held once per season. The event consists of a lifesaving theory questionnaire, rowing ergo, a surf swim, a board race, a ski race, beach sprint and beach flags. Points are awarded for the finish in each of these legs and the lifesaver with the most points overall is crowned Club Champion of their age group. For any of you who have not heard nor participated in the Club Swim ‐ we urge you to come down on a Saturday afternoon and have a go. It's run every Saturday with handicapped start times to encourage participation in a fun and non‐competitive atmosphere (unless you ask Brett Roe). It is also a great way to meet other members of the club and improve your swimming and surf skills (and it's over in less than 10 minutes!). Every swimmer who takes part each week receives a point in the overall standings, and additional points are awarded to those coming over the line in the first six positions. Andrew Lanyon puts an enormous amount of effort into maintaining the complex spreadsheet used to calculate the handicap times each week. As one of the club's most successful competitive swimmers of all time, he then stands on the beach to ensure we all get to participate. Andrew Lanyon presented this season's overall point winners:

In our midst we have someone who has accumulated nearly 3,000 patrol hours for our club since they first joined about 35 years ago. To put this in perspective, if you were just intent on achieving your minimum 16 hours required for competition purposes each season, you'd have to patrol for 187 years to reach 3,000 hours. Even more impressive is that this person has actually completed thousands more hours for other clubs and rescue services like the Lifesaver jet rescue boats, but the spreadsheet crashed when we tried to calculate his total surf life saving commitment. This year we also have someone who has achieved the milestone of 1,000 career patrol hours for Henley, being only the fourth to ever achieve this accomplishment after Paul and two other Life Members ‐ Rod Hill and Mark Searcy. Congratulations to Aaron Lewis, and don't worry ‐ you've only got another couple of thousand to catch up to Digger! 1000 PATROL HOURS ‐ AARON LEWIS We also recognise the member who has accrued the most Henley Club patrol hours for the season; this includes hours performed here at Henley as well as carnival water‐cover commitments and Henley's shifts in the SurfCom radio room. MOST PATROL HOURS ‐ TOM LANYON (73 HOURS) We continue now to celebrate the achievements of our patrolling group by awarding the Patrol Member of the Year. This award recognises a patrol member who this season has worked towards improving the delivery of our core business, by providing a safe swimming environment at our beach. Our recipient has given their time to many different patrol groups this season and has never failed to impress the more senior lifesavers in those groups. They possess boundless levels of enthusiasm, impressive knowledge of first aid, lifesaving skills and procedures and a never failing cheery disposition. When you are in this person's company on the beach, you cannot help but be enthusiastic and motivated about what we're there for. In the past, we've had a difficult time trying to award a Champion Patrol Group given the extremely high level of competence of all of the patrols. This season, all 11 patrol groups received a visit from either the Club Captain or Vice‐Captain to conduct a rescue scenario, giving them a chance to showcase their skills. The champion patrol for 2014/15 season excelled at the following:

• attendance of members; • leadership by the PC/VC (proactive ‐ they do not have a rostered IRB driver, but source one themselves each patrol to ensure they are as well equipped as possible);

• enthusiasm by all members; • mentoring of junior members; • and their performance in the rescue scenario.

We present two awards each season to club members who have excelled in enthusiasm, commitment and effort in Life Saving Services, Competition and social participation with the Club. This is an 'all rounder' award, so while competition results and patrol hours are recognised, they are not the main focus of this award. The awards are named after our Life Member and Order of Australia Medal holder Barrie Duhne and are presented to a Junior and a Senior member of the club. The Junior category is for any member who has not yet attained the Bronze Medallion and the Senior category is for any Bronze Medallion holder. BARRY DUHNE JUNIOR LIFESAVER OF THE YEAR ‐ AIMEE MORONEY PLOUFFE


As you heard, this award is provided to an 'all rounder' who contributes to life saving, competition and social aspects of the club. This year's winner for the Senior category of the Barry Duhne Lifesaver of the Year ticks all of these boxes by being a leading patrol captain, enthusiastic competitor committed to their training ‐ frequently found pushing themselves further in the gym, and socialising at club events ‐ but then goes above and beyond these areas by also giving their time to club fundraising activities such as True Grit, improving their swimming at club swim training and each week in the Club Swim and, if all that wasn't enough, spending hours officiating at numerous surf life saving carnivals and competitions throughout the season. But perhaps this award should really be in recognition of her ability to take charge of Steve, Cooper and Oscar. Of course, we're talking about Beck Forest. BARRY DUHNE SENIOR LIFESAVER OF THE YEAR ‐ REBECCA FOREST If you remember back to the Saturday the 3rd January, the bush fires in Sampson Flat were raging; the CFS had evacuated a number of people from the area, included in this evacuation was a live‐in course of troubled teenagers embarking on a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. The BOM had forecast a change to come through that afternoon; the CFS hoped that would be the case to assist in their firefighting efforts. So that sets the scene... the troubled teenagers had been relocated to the relative safety of the Western suburb beaches of Adelaide. At the same time, given the extreme temperatures, the beach at Henley was packed. Then, the Southerly buster change came through as predicted by the BOM. Given the date and the number of people away on holidays, there were less than 10 people on patrol. When the wind hit, the patrol tent launched into the air and a number of patrol members were holding it down to keep it from tumbling away. Let me take you back to our troubled teenagers, who had decided to take a walk out on the Henley Jetty. The Patrol Captain, Bianca Parker, was standing near the jetty talking to one of our club members who was down at the beach having a swim. Back to the troubled teenagers, dressed in their jeans and long‐sleeve shirts ‐ one guy was also sporting a particularly attractive hat which was blown off into the water on the Northern side of the jetty. In an act of chivalry, or perhaps stupidity, one of the teenagers leapt into the water from the end of the jetty in an attempt to recover the hat. Unfortunately, this young man was unable to swim. In a further act of chivalry, another member of the group who also couldn't swim, jumped in to help him. We now had two non‐swimmers (and a hat) in deep water, 100 metres from shore and about 300 metres North of the jetty. In response to requests for assistance yelled from the jetty, and given her limited resources at the time (she did not have an IRB available), Bianca prepared to enter the water. However, knowing the strengths and skills at her immediate disposal, she sent our hero out to assist the struggling non‐swimmers whilst she rallied the troops. Imagine for a moment trying to support the weight of a fully‐clothed adult male, non‐swimmer, in one of Henley's trademark "stormies". He did an amazing job to keep our teenager's head above water whilst also keeping the second non‐swimmer from panicking. Fortuitously, a number of our experienced board paddlers had just finished a training session and were able to recognise the situation which was transpiring and provide assistance. We could go on with a number of other aspects of the rescue, but suffice to say it was a very close call, with a disaster averted by some quick thinking and quick action by a number of Henley life savers. However, this


is a lead‐in to a rarely presented award which is provided by our constitution and awarded for an outstanding rescue when the skills and resourcefulness of our patrolling members come to the fore. Please welcome our hero of that rescue and the recipient of Henley's 2014/15 Hero of the Surf award, Ethan Miller. We would also like to pay special mention to Patrol Captain, Bianca Parker for keeping it all together on the day and our two board paddlers, Cooper Forest and Tom Lanyon, who were able to return the non‐swimmers to shore via a board rescue. HERO OF THE SURF ‐ ETHAN MILLER (SPECIAL MENTION COOPER FOREST & BIANCA PARKER) We now move on to a special award, open to any member who started their association with the club in the junior section and has now excelled in the senior section of the club. The award is named after Chook and Beverly Fielder, founding members of our club and Surf Life Saving in South Australia and parents to 12‐year past‐President of our club Neville Fielder. Nev, would you come up to present this award and could you say a few words about the importance of this award. The recipient of this award for this season, belongs to a family with a heavy involvement in our club. This person contributes enormously to their patrols and often happily fills in for others as a substitute patrol member. He or she has been an active fundraiser, Big Row participant, True Gritter, has come through as a Junior, competed in beach events and now also in surf boat rowing where she's achieved a silver medal this year at the Australian Titles with her crew. She brings a delightful and energetic vibe with her presence and is a lovely person to have around the club, however is a little bit scary in the gym as she goes so hard! The Chook and Beverly Fielder Trophy for 2014/15 is awarded to the lovely Laura Cassidy! CHOOK AND BEVERLY FIELDER TROPHY LAURA CASSIDY This next award is for the Best First Year Member. Our recipient is a second season member, however 2014/15 is their first full season. Achievements of this person this season include:

• over 45 patrol hours • attended all but one Club Swim • provided frequent water cover for Juniors on Saturdays • frequently filled in as a volunteer on Brown patrol • achieved his ATV Operators certificate and IRB Crew certificate and is currently working towards his Silver Medallion IRB Driver award

BEST FIRST YEAR MEMBER ‐ LENNIE HITCH


You might remember that last year, the Club Member of the Year was "Bear" ‐ Charlie Jones for his commitment to whipping the equipment shed into shape. It should be no surprise then, that this season's Club Member of the Year also acknowledges the efforts of another of our great work‐horses. This person is often the first person to arrive at the club to setup for Juniors on the weekends. If you have ever done battle with the tangle that is the swim buoys, you'll know what a wonderful job this bloke does. He has spent more time in the IRB than in his bed, including water cover at our carnivals and driving all the way to the Gold Coast to provide the IRB water cover we required at Aussies as well as ensuring the Silver‐medal winning surf boat arrived safely there and back, including negotiating the NSW floods on the way home. He's then continued with his IRB enthusiasm and achieved his Training Officer award for IRB and is currently helping to conduct both an IRB Crew and Drivers course. Not only is he involved with the IRBs, he plays a very important role in keeping all of our club members informed. He has spent countless hours putting his non‐lifesaving skills to great use in re‐developing the club's website and continuing to ensure that it's maintained up to date with the latest news and events. CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR ‐ TIM CAVANAGH The selection of the Presidents Award this year was a difficult one as there have been many members who have gone above and beyond and are worthy winners of this award. However there is one stand out person who not only completed their patrolling duties but has also contributed to the training of our members, organized patrols, ensured we have all the correct lifesaving equipment ready for use, involved with and conducted lifesaving coaching on patrols. This person also assisted with the organization of our major fund raising event, The Big Row and was the main person behind the success of another fundraising event, True Grit. PRESIDENT’S AWARD ‐ PETER OBORN


Inflatable Rescue Boat Report Again the IRBs play an important role to ensure the club provided a responsible service and safety for the beach going public. The craft were also used in proving water cover for junior & senior carnivals as well as providing an important role in the club’s biggest fund raiser “ The Big Row”. We have purchased 2 new Mercury outboards with the help of a Sports and Recreation grant from the State Government. Over the coming 12 months we hopefully will be able to replace all of our Yamaha motors with new current Mercury motors. Currently we have 4 good condition hulls with the intention of selling the older Zodiac hull. The fuel cells will also be replaced over the coming years. Since moving into the new clubrooms we have had issues with storage of the craft. To overcome this we plan on storing 2 hull in cradles which can hung from the ceiling and lowered quickly and safely when required. The current trailer used to launch the craft will also be replaced. The new trailer will have the capacity to transport craft on our public roads therefore ensure the IRBs can be more utilised away from the club. A big thank you must go Tim Cavanagh for his help this season. Tim has provided the club with a roadworthy trailer and vehicle to transport craft around the state. Tim has represented the club providing water cover at State and National competition not to mention the Big Row. Henley Extreme Team (HET) In season 2014/15 the HET group again enjoyed Saturday training, carnival participation and social events. Only a few seasons ago there was no HET activity on the beach on Saturday afternoons. Now, as a result of Age Group Leaders continuing beyond the Under 14 level, Henley has been able to transition our Youth into the senior part of the club via the HET program. In this regard, I would like to thank Oliver Miller and Phil Hogan for guiding the Under 17s and Quentin Dorward and Brett Roe for leading the Under 15 group during 2014/15. Thanks also to Jim Plouffe for his assistance with the Under 15s until he stepped in to the Under 14 AGL role part way through the season when the need arose. In addition to Oliver, Phil, Quentin, Brett and Jim, thanks also to Roy Menner, Sonja Smith and Rachel Roe who attended Youth Committee meetings. Stefan Starkey was the young voice on the Committee until his move to Mount Gambier, thanks Stefan for your input. This group has given their time on weekends and in attending meetings to contribute to the following events throughout the season. ∙ An ‘Activities Day’ to start the season at the end of the school holidays in October. ∙ The annual HET camp at Chiton Rocks SLSC was held on weekend of November 1st & 2nd and

attended by the biggest group so far, 32 HET members. In addition to those people named above who attended, thanks to bus drivers David Froud and Brett Roe. Also Jonathon DeBeer, Monique and Gerhard Viljoen and Emma Cassidy your support in helping this large group is greatly appreciated.

Once again ‘Proficiency’ for the HET group was at this camp, special thanks to Roy Menner for attending to conduct this session.

The success of the camp was also due to the fantastic support we received from one of the club’s great sponsors, “Budget Car & Truck Rental”. The two buses supplied by “Budget” were perfect for this and we thank you for the excellent service provided.

∙ One of the social highlights was the HET group’s first session at “Bounce” trampoline centre,

followed by dinner at the club. Again to another of our wonderful sponsors, thank you to “Crust gourmet pizza bar” for their support and fantastic service in delivering pizzas that night.

∙ Although HET is mainly club focused, we are also aware of the need for our Youth members to

support community and social issues. Anglicare conducts a “Living Beyond Suicide” program highlighting the issue of suicide and the affect on family and friends. HET supported the participants in this early morning November event by providing a BBQ.

∙ HET also supports the Henley and Grange RSL to support the ANZAC Day service on a rotation basis

with West Beach SLSC and Grange SLSC. HET provided the support in 2014 so it was our “year off” in 2015. However Ryan Froud was the HET representative this year in the flag raising role during the service.

∙ Surf Lifesaving South Australia conducts a number of Development Camps each year, including the

Youth Development Camp which is held in July school holidays. Henley was fortunate to have three members attend in 2014.


Through the CALD (Culturally & Linguistically Diverse) program Ben Tahiruza attended courtesy of the work done by Roy Menner through this program. Ben together with Jandre Vanderwelt and Ryan Froud were great ambassadors at this camp which was in the Flinders Ranges.

At the recent Senior Presentation evening our 2014/15 Under 14s received their HET tops as they progress to the Senior part of the club. We look forward to these new HET members having a fantastic time with the current HET group next season. As indicated earlier there are a number of people who give up their own time to contribute to the HET program. Looking at the names of those currently involved, they are all doing a lot for the club with HET and also in many other areas. We are always looking to improve the HET program, maintain the fun and retain these young members through the Youth ages and on to adult leadership roles. The existing Committee members are all parents of past or present HET members and have loved watching their sons and daughters grow and progress through the club. However there will be a time when the Committee needs new faces and fresh ideas as current members move on. If you would like to support your son or daughter through HET, please put your hand up for 2015/16. There is no better way to keep your children involved than to be involved yourself. Junior Report 2014/15 The Junior Committee consisted of Roy Menner – Chair, Nikki von Bertouch ‐ Secretary, Gary Ashton – Competition Manager and Rachel Roe – Training Manager. As in past years, the Committee continued to meet monthly throughout the winter months in preparation for the season. Much of that time was spent reviewing all aspects of the junior program. The result of this work was what is called the ‘Four Pillars’ which underpin the work in this area. It begins with this opening statement…

Henley SLSC exists to keep the beach safe. To achieve this it requires life savers. To fill these roles, trained personal and support personal are required. Henley Juniors supports this goal by attracting and keeping members, children, their families and friends, who can fill these roles both now and in the future. Thus, Henley Juniors needs to attract and keep members. There are four pillars that attract and keep members to our club, or reason why people want to join a junior surf life saving club.

SOCIAL This is about making friends and socialising – for the children who are in the junior program and their parents and carers. COMPETITION A major part of the junior program is being involved in the sporting side of life saving. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Being involved in the junior program develops children/youth in a number of areas including, but not limited to, fitness, skills for competition, SLSA Awards, beach awareness. Most children go on to gain their Surf Rescue Certificate. VOLUNTEERING Volunteering is a unique part of the Australian and Surf Life Saving cultures. It needs to be given due recognition. In some areas we had outstanding success while in others we need to improve. The pillars give us direction though in our planning and as always, the Committee is working through the winter months to ensure that we are successful in all areas.


Wave Warriors Day at Henley Wave Warriors This season the club successfully hosted this event. It was an outstanding success due to the effort put in by members of our club who helped to set up on the Friday, assist with the running of the carnival and then packed up at the end of the day. The organisers were so impressed that they have already booked in another event Saturday Nippers Each week we have a large number of children on the beach in age groups from Under 6 to Under 14. This would not be possible to do without the support of a small army of helpers. Firstly the Age Group Leaders and Age Group Assistants who again did a magnificent job on Saturdays and at all carnivals. Winter Training and Mid‐Week Training The Henley Nippers started training in the off‐season way back in August. Weekly sprint, flags and board session were well attended by some committed young athletes. Once the season was underway, we offered Tuesday/Thursday swim squad sessions (run year round), Wednesday board training, Friday sprints and flags and Friday Iron Person. Thanks to Rachel Roe, Catriona Bahr and Nikki von Bertouch for their weekly commitment to the training and improvement of our competitors. Water Cover We were also well served by numerous people who provided water cover for training. Again, without their support the junior program would not be possible. Competition Manager Report Congratulations to our dedicated competitors who participated with pride during the 2014/2015 season. It was fantastic to watch our members displaying their skills and talent across all surf sport disciplines including local, state, interstate and national competitions. As members of the Henley SLSC you are the ‘club’ and as such we celebrate all participation, results and achievements. We will continue to learn, grow, review our processes, and set future goals and aim to improve our overall competitiveness. Thank you to the Management Committee, Youth Committee, Area Captains, Coaches, Senior Age Group Co‐ordinators and Team Managers for your time, dedication and efforts in supporting our competitors. I would also like to personally thank the Area Captains; Andrew Lanyon (Water), Andrew Henry (Beach), Scott Robinson (Ski), Steve Forest (Boards), Jamie Butterfield (Boats), Gary Ashton (Junior Representative), Leisa Moroney (Officials Co‐ordinator), Rachel Roe (Pool Rescue Coach) and our Club Captain Tom Lanyon. I appreciate the work which was done by each of you to ensure our competitors were ready to race! Thank to all of our members for continuing to correctly use the Henley Entry Process, this certainly makes a difference in ensuring our competitors entries are received at SLSSA without any issues. We will continue to use this system and communicate with members via range of methods including email, SMS, Facebook and on the notice board at the club. Regardless of the ‘results’ our competitors have always conducted themselves with the Henley spirit and have shown that wearing our club colours means more than winning gold. I feel extremely proud of each person who has entered an event this season and hope to encourage others to join a team, have a go and enjoy the variety of surf sports on offer in the 205/2016 season. I must confess I thoroughly enjoy the feeling I get when I walk on the beach or around the pool and hear members from other clubs commenting positively and yes sometimes with surprise about our Henley competitors. Congratulations to you all. 2014 South Australian Pool Rescue Championships (15th and 22nd June) The Henley team came together in the middle of winter to once again show their strength at the State Pool Rescue Championships, finishing in 5th place overall with 245 points. Our team of only 16 enthusiastic and determined competitors from U12 ‐ Masters helped Henley improve last season’s placing from 7th to finish in the top 5. This was a fantastic achievement and with a total of 30 medals awarded to our Henley team, we certainly were shining. This was an exceptional result and one the club as a whole should be extremely proud of. Thank you to our amazing team who showed wonderful skills, team spirit and perseverance during the competition and to our volunteer officials, pool setters, time keepers, team manager and coach. It was great to see competitors from U15 through to Masters age groups enjoying the fantastic conditions while they contested the seven events. They all showed their incredible skills, sportsmanship and wonderful Henley spirit. Congratulations to our Senior Club Champions and everyone who competed at this season’s Henley SLSC Club Championships.

Some curious spectators cheered our members on from the balcony of the Oceanview Bar and Restaurant as well as from Henley Square and the jetty. This certainly added to the wonderful atmosphere of the day.

Congratulations to all of our Henley members for a magnificent day. It was fantastic to see the Henley spirit alive and well. 2015 South Australian Champion Lifesaver (29th & 31st January) Congratulations to Cooper Forest, Siobhan Roe and Tom Lanyon for entering this prestigious Lifesaving event. Henley finished 8th overall with 16 points. Our medallist this year at the Champion Lifesaver was: BRONZE Cooper Forest U15 Boys 2015 South Australian Rescue & Resuscitation State Championships (21st February & 28th March) Henley entered two teams this season into the State Titles, the Open Mens 5 Person team and the Open Mixed 6 Person R&R team. With some last minute changes to the Mixed team due to an injury both teams were competitive and finished 4th and 5th respectively. We look forward to next season seeing even more teams joining the R&R ranks. 2015 SA Masters (7th & 8th March) and State Masters Surf Boat Championships (28th February) Henley showed strength in numbers at Christies Beach and Aldinga Beach for these championships with 60 competitors across all disciplines including surf boats. It was great to see our Masters giving it their best with some excellent results, finishing 6th overall with 416 points. An impressive and outstanding 51 medals were won by our Masters at the Championships. What an exceptional effort by everyone, congratulations. 2015 South Australian Senior State Championships (15th, 28th and 29th March) The Senior State Championships began with the Life Saver Relay. An event where competitors from all ages,

genders and disciplines including; surf boats, skis, boards, swimming and running come together as a team. Henley contested this event and for the first time in our clubs history made it through to the final where we finished in a respectful 7th position. Our team included the Open Surf Boat Mackdogs crew of Simon Mitris, John Hersley, Ross Hamilton, Colby Grace and sweep Darren Hocking, U15 sprinter Chloe Shatwell, U17 Board paddler Daniel Hogan, U19 swimmer Joshua Smith and Open Ski Paddler Tom Lanyon.

Henley was well represented with 99 senior members competing across three days at South Port Beach. After the 3 senior carnivals we were positioned in 6th place and at the conclusion of the Senior State Championships Henley finished in

7th position overall with 265 points and 24 medals. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm, team effort and efforts of all our competitors this season. Congratulations to all of our competitors across all disciplines; swim, belt and tube events, boards, ski, beach and surf boats. We were well represented with 25 competitors from the Surf Boat area and 74 competitors on the beach and in the water over the 3 days. We saw medals, many finalists and top ten finishes during the championships which at times were contested in a variety of conditions. We cannot forget the many parents and our members who gave up their time to act as a team manager, officials, helpers and supporters for all of our athletes competing at the championships. Thank you to our incredibly resilient and proud Henley Team. 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (11th ‐19th April) The years Australian Titles were held at North Kirra Beach, Queensland. The Henley Surf Life Saving Club was well represented with a touring team consisting of 3 Youth, 22 Open and 6 Masters Competitors.

Travelling interstate for competition is an incredibly exciting time but it can also demand a lot of organisation, time and effort in ensuring everything runs as smoothly as possible. It certainly would not be possible for our team to compete if it wasn’t for the support from our IRB drivers Tim Cavanagh and Neville Fielder plus crews Darren Hocking, Cameron Johns and Tom Lanyon. In addition thank you to Barry Duhne and Mulchy who volunteered as officials at Aussies. Thank you also to all of the families who travelled to North Kirra Beach, transported equipment, supported our members and provided encouragement and motivation for those who competed at the 2015 Aussies.

A special mention to Phil Hogan, Team Manager Extraordinaire whose tireless organisation and work before, during and after the event ensured our Henley Team had a fantastic experience. Phil also provided constant updates, photos and videos via the Henley Facebook page so our members could feel like they were right there cheering on our wonderful team.

A highlight during the event was when Jim Doherty received an award of 70years in surf life saving from the International Life Saving Council in front of the crowd on 19th April at Tugun Beach. Congratulations Jim. There were many memorable moments during the competition at Aussies for our Henley team, with the most outstanding one being the U23 Female Surf Boat crew of Emma Cassidy,

Laura Cassidy, Bianca Parker, Regan Smallacombe and sweep Jamie Butterfield winning a Silver medal. This is simply an incredible achievement and a testament to the crew’s dedication, team work, training and chemistry. Congratulations Henley Strikers.

Our Male Surf Team of Neville Fielder, Andrew Lanyon and John Ellice‐Flint also showed training and commitment pay off as they won Gold at Aussies. The Henley Masters team of only 6 competitors finished an impressive 32nd with 33 points while the Open team finished 41st overall. We finished with a total of 5 medals and many top 10 places in finals. A special mention to our Club Captain, Tom Lanyon who finished in 7th place in the Open Mens Champion Lifesaver event, this is a great achievement. The 2016 Aussies will be held from 16th ‐ 24th April, at Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba Beaches, Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, QLD and our dedicated and experienced Touring Team Manager, Phil Hogan is already co‐ordinating the Henley Team. To do this effectively we must continue to keep our training in Surf Life Saving up to date, remain fit and support this wonderful voluntary organisation. We are also extremely fortunate to have multiple opportunities to increase our involvement through competition across many surf sport disciplines. The 2015/2016 season will see a focus on building teams which will allow for more members to experience the excitement and thrill of representing our magnificent club. So when someone taps you gently on the shoulder and encourages you to join a the March Past, R&R, Surf Belt, Surf Boat, Swim, Beach Relay, Taplin, Cameron, Ski and Board teams please give it some thought. Imagine fielding teams in all events across all age groups, how sensational! All members regardless of their ability will be welcome to join a team next season. I would like to thank our members who are the ‘club’ because you have been amazing to work with and continue to be such a dedicated team of volunteers who continually show a genuine interest in Surf Life Saving and the Henley Surf Club. Thank you also to David Cassidy, Quentin Dorward, Oliver Miller, Phil Hogan and Jim Plouffe for once again ensuring our HET team continues to develop and grow. Board Captain Report Another great season has come to an end and after the success of last year we had several of our regulars take up the new training program over the winter months. It was cold, hard and long but achieved excellent results at all our carnivals. All of the people who regularly came to these sessions achieved PB’S and many podium finishes throughout the year, which I’m sure shocked a few other clubs. A new initiative this year saw the Board Paddlers head up into the gym for some strength training, which also included the U14’s who were granted special permission to use the gym facilities by Management Committee. Thanks to Gary Tredrea’s program and specialised training we all got a lot stronger. The change of training was well received and enjoyed by all who took it up. Management also approved the new racks in the equipment area which resulted in most people gaining space for their equipment. This has been appreciated by all that have taken advantage of the storage. Despite our new training programs and recruiting, we unfortunately had not many new paddlers come out to regular training. There was a change of times this year which we will address for next season. However we still managed to fill teams in all age groups at State Titles. There were several instances where people stepped up and filled in to make up teams. This was really appreciated by all. A memorable moment was at Senior States, where Jayden Cremasco from U15’s had to drive straight from a soccer game at Salisbury to make it just in time for the start of the Cameron relay at Port Noarlunga. His effort was rewarded with a Bronze medal for the team. Late in the year we introduced a breakfast club training session on a Wednesday morning, which was game based and a bit more fun. We had an excellent take up of this and everyone that attended really enjoyed it. We had to finish when we started running out of daylight, but we will definitely start this earlier in the season next year so keep an eye on our Facebook page. Competition There were several tough Challenges that were organised by other clubs throughout the year including Seacliff SPR and The Somerton Signature Challenge. These were excellent carnival type events were we got to put our hard efforts at training to the test. There was also Wave Warriors for the juniors which were held here at Henley which also provided the opportunity for them to have a training session with Iron Man Zane Holmes.


Masters We had an excellent turn out again this year with a few first time competitors giving it a go. Individuals did very well on Saturday and were rewarded with several personal bests. On Sunday, there was the usual strong Henley Team Spirit and we were able to put together some excellent teams in several age groups that were rewarded with medals.

Senior States We had a great turn out this year and very favourable weather conditions. There was great competition and sportsmanship from all Henley competitors. We had many podium finishes and most achieved PB’s over the three days of competition. There was some very close finishes which had everybody waiting for the judge’s decision but it was all great competition to and everyone who made the trek down enjoyed it.

Aussies Numbers of competitors were down slightly this year but we still had a great Henley contingent that made the trip up to Kirra Beach l. Perfect weather and waves every day saw some make it right through to finals. To compete amongst other athletes of the calibre that you get at Australian titles is an experience not to be missed. The learning curve has been great and they’re all keen to go again next year. Thanks to all the officials, water cover and trailer towers over the year. Ski Captain Report The 2014/15 season was one of development for the ski area. Whilst numbers were still light on in open competition, Henley continued to dominate in the Masters area. There continues to be a small group of dedicated older paddlers training on a regular basis. As a result the club was able to win multiple medals across all age groups at Masters State Titles. This year saw the number of juniors practicing their ski paddling jump considerably, with the HET team and under 15s having a go regularly on Saturday afternoons. The increase of juniors paddling can also be put down to the help of new member Peter Gargiulo. Peter has joined the club after moving from Victoria. He has a development role with Australian canoeing and provided our junior members with the opportunity to undertake some kayak sessions and receive some expert coaching. A number of our juniors took up this opportunity and are going to continue with the program over winter. State Titles this year was encouraging with Henley having a number of paddlers in U17 male events. This included Dan Hogan, Ryan Froud, Jake Dorward and Jake Butterfield. Due to there being no U17 Double ski all four were forced to paddle in the U19 double ski with Dan and Jake Butterfield finishing 7th and Ryan and Jake Dorward finishing 10th. This was a good result and will stand them in good stead for next season. A special mention needs to go to Jake Butterfield who paddled in the Open Ski Relay, producing a great effort for someone new to the sport, well done Jake. Finally, I would like to thank David Foureur, who continues to write programs for the ski area. David has a huge work load as the Australian Olympic Womens Kayak coach makes time to put together quality training programs for ski paddlers at the club. Next season I encourage members to use the resources we have at the club in David and Peter to develop their paddling. These are guys who have developed and coached world class athletes and if you are prepared to do the work will provide you with the assistance to achieve outstanding results. Beach Captain Report After slowly building the depth and strengths over previous seasons, this season was seen as one of consolidation and development. Some members were very eager to commence “preseason” providing me with the belief that we were on the right track to meeting our expectations. All members were advised details of program, asked to provide detail of expectations, goals and commitment prior to the season. Attendance at preseason again varied for a number of reasons however some member’s requirements are met through other sport commitments. Cross training is an important part of training and once identified individual programs for these athletes was initiated. The competition season kicked off again through the twilight series. This season we conducted the first twilight and with support from our club officials, demonstrated our ability to conduct events efficiently and professionally. Our venue, members and environment is perfect for beach events and should be further developed to further expose our club to all of the community. After the conduct of 2 twilight carnivals the rest of the competition season is limited to SLSSA scheduled carnivals. Again a small number of athletes attended with results improving through the season providing positive feedback for individuals involved.

Masters competitors again achieved good results. Specific planning and training in both individual and team events would result in even stronger results however unless participants involved are willing to address the issues, improvement will be difficult. Planning for the senior state titles also proved difficult, with details of days/times/venues this year again not finalised until late. We did however have a small but dedicated group participate, again winning many medals and representing our club proudly. Several members again travelled to the Australian titles, continuing the beach areas proud achievements by once again winning several medals and making finals. Individually the achievements of Lindy Lewis and Brandon Kozned were outstanding and I congratulate them for their effort throughout the season. The U17 female beach relay team also competed proudly and this group again represented the club in the final. While over 20 athletes were involved with training over the season, 3 members (Chloe Shatwell, Chelsea Sleczka, Brandon Kozned) were the backbone of training sessions and I encourage them to continue their commitment to achieve their goals.

The role of coach at the club has historically been included in area captains’ role. This aspect is not ideal and currently being addressed by the beach committee. The role of coach is vital at the club and needs to be suitably recognised if the club is to continue developing more athletes as well as Lifesavers. . With the club continually growing, supporting our next generation of athletes is imperative. Ultimate success is achievable, however for this to occur it takes more than just athletes and a training program. Generally the larger the support network, the better the results. While I have not achieved all goals as beach coach, due to many reasons, I will not be continuing and wish the new beach captain all the best in the future.

Surfboats Area The surf boat area has had an outstanding season in competition winning a Silver medal in the Women U23 division at the Australian Titles, first boat medal in the clubs long history. The club won the Australian Surf Boat Rowers League of S.A (ASRLSA) Premiership Shield in 2013‐14 and are tipped to win the Shield again in 2014‐15. The Premiership Shield will be presented at the ASRLSA Annual Awards Dinner to be held at the HSLSC on 4th July at the Henley Club. Our strategic plan for the surf boat area continues to push the surf boat area each season. The SWOT plan is a document developed & revisited by the Surfboat panel each season. The achievements from our strategic plan over the last five years are a collective dedicated effort from all members in the surf boat area. When the goals were set five years ago we probably thought we were punching above our weight attempting to make Australian finals in such a short time frame! The success has now been achieved by winning a medal in this ultimate competition.

Have a competitive open men and women crews – Two men’s crew won Silver and Bronze and our women were Silver medallists.

Conduct regular come and try events to encourage new rowers. We have record numbers of U19 crews

Increase IRB drivers and crew certifications of surf boat crew members.

Access to specialised coaching resources within the club.

Knowledge of and subsequent utilisation of existing member’s skills.

Increasing the number of supporters to assist with ancillary tasks. Develop a sense of commitment to your crew, the club and surf boat rowing. The season started in October with the reintroduction of the traditional Row around the Island at Pt Elliot in very high winds. The Henley crews won the event. Robe was also an enjoyable carnival on the last weekend in November. Henley earned valuable points toward gaining state selection. The Open Men Mackdogs ,U23 Women Strikers and under 23 Men Royals all represented SA at the ASRL Australian Open in Shell Harbour on February 20th to 22nd.The Dirty Birds also competed. The Strikers won Bronze in the interstate and the Royals on the podium at the Navy Cup Carnival. Thanks to Darren Hocking for towing the two boats to NSW and Kevin Fitzgerald for his support as co‐driver.


The Masters State Titles were held at Aldinga bay we had six crews compete, congratulations to all medal winning crews. Our Masters Surf Boat crews were very competitive in all age groups. The Coopers Classic was held at South port on the first of March. Henley had a great day winning Men’s and Women’s open competition. The Senior State Titles were held at South Port Beach on March 28th. There was a small wave coming through that made racing interesting. Congratulations to all medal winners. Great effort by the Dirty Birds who won the Silver and the Mackdogs who won Bronze medals in the Open Men in one of the closest finals in many years.. The Henley Royals were dominant all year in U23 Men and took the Silver in the final. The U23 Strikers won Gold and also won Silver in the Open women competition. Three crews competed at the Australian Titles Thanks to Tim Cavanagh for towing the boat to Gold coast and completing the clubs water cover obligations in the IRB all week. The Dirty Birds rowed in the reserves, the Mack dogs for their first year together at Australian titles competition were strong and made it through to Saturday’s high standard competition dropping out in a close race just being overtaken on the line. The club had great expectations of the U23 women Strikers and they didn’t let anyone down winning the Silver medal. Congratulations must go to the crew for their exceptional dedication to their training programs. Their rowing over the entire carnival was faultless and will be remembered as another of our clubs great achievements. Congratulations to the Strikers crew. Thank you to all the dedicated sweeps that have committed their personal time throughout the season to keep the crews on the water. We wouldn’t be the successful surf boat club we are without the dedication from our strength and fitness coaches ‐ Gary Tredrea and Gary Fazzalari who have again created enthusiasm in the gym with their regular circuit, boxing and gym programs. Thanks to Rae Lawson for assisting me as surfboat coordinator, keeping all the carnival entries in order in addition to her role as Secretary for the ASRLSA. And finally, congratulations to all the Henley surf boat crews that helped win the Premiership Shield. AUSTRALIAN SURF ROWERS LEAGUE STATE AWARDS Induction into the “Hall of Fame for ASRLSA” – Kevin Fitzgerald

Kevin has been inducted into the Australian Surf Rowers League SA Hall of Fame.. Kevin started his boat rowing in 1975 as a junior rower and progressed onto open rowing and won his first State Open Gold at 19 years of age. He has won numerous more State medals since as a rower and a sweep. In 2000 he retired from open rowing at 40years of age and has been sweeping crews since. He has made numerous State Teams and also competed in the Uncle Tobys and the proffessional Kellogs circuit around Australia. He has also won a silver medal at the World Titles with his Hurricane crew in 2012. Kevin’s 40 years committment to Surf Boat competition and his success has made him worthy by his peers for this honour. Life Member of ASRLSA— Trevor Mulvihill Trevor has continued on as a referee after his years in a boat and still judged at Australian Titles as well as the local carnivals

Water Captain Report Weekly Surf Races The weekly Saturday swims continued to be very well supported this season. We had an average of 32 swimmers each week over the 18 swims and a maximum of 55 on November 29th. A total of 109 different members did at least one swim. Points were awarded each week for participation (2 points) with bonus points for the first 6 places on handicap ( 6 down to 1). Swimming Training Our swim training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Immanuel College pool are continuing to be well supported with 20 to 30 members attending each night during the summer months and it has been great to see good numbers continuing into the winter months this year. I would like to thank our coaches Rachel Roe, Catriona Bahr and Rebecca Woods. Competitions Water area competition includes the swimming events of surf swim race, rescue tube race, belt race and surf swim teams plus the multidiscipline events of board rescue, ironman, Taplin relay and Cameron relay and the pool rescue events.


Pool Rescue State Championships The Pool Rescue State Championships were held at the State Aquatic Centre in July 2014. Henley’s team comprised 16 members from U12’s through to masters, and our overall placing of 5th in the point‐score was a very good result. Our team performed very well winning 31 medals and achieving many other high placings. Thank you to Rachel Roe for coaching the pool rescue team. Senior Carnivals and Senior State Championships A large team comprising mainly under‐15s and under‐17s represented Henley in the water events at carnivals and State Championships. This saw us field competitors in nearly all U15 and U17 water event at States, in addition to some U19 and open events. Events included surf swim, board rescue, Cameron relay, ironman/women and surf teams. We also had a strong team in the Lifesaver Relay, making the final for the first time in several years. Australian Championships In the youth and senior championships water area events we were well represented by Siobhan Roe in U15 surf race, tube race and ironwoman, Daniel Hogan in U17 tube race and ironman and Tom Lanyon in Over24 surf race who all performed strongly and gained valuable experience. In the Masters competition we had 5 competitors in the water area events and were successful in winning medals in three events. All competitors made the final in all of their events which was an outstanding effort. The West Beach Community Bank Big Row 2015 On the 14th March 2015, the Henley SLSC conducted their 9th annual Big Row, crossing the 68km from Stansbury on the Yorke Peninsula to Henley Beach, fundraising $83000 for the surf club. The row started at just prior to 6am, from the Stansbury boat ramp, where a small group of locals gathered to send off the surf boat and other vessels. With the sun not due to rise until after 7am, the rowers set off in the dark. Conditions remained relatively good throughout the crossing with a small wind chop from the north‐ west, plus an accompanying 6‐10 knot breeze. With the retirement of stalwart Kevin Fitzgerald from the safety officer role, Peter Oborn stepped up this year and ran a tight, well organised ship, ensuring all boat changeovers were done safely and within the calculated time allocations. Pete was very happy with the changeovers from all crews, as this part of the crossing is very important from a safety perspective as well as a timeliness measure. The rowers were made up of the crews of the National under 23 women’s silver medallists, the Strikers, the men’s crews of the Mack Dogs and the Dirty Birds, the under 19 men’s crew, the Royals and a mixed crew of female and male master competitors. For newcomer Renae Pearce, this was her first Big Row and she really enjoyed the experience. With the wind easing towards the end of the crossing, the surf boat and support vessels came into view at about 1pm, well ahead of schedule. As the crews got closer, a large contingent of HET members paddled out on boards and skis to meet the boat. The Gallantry was also in attendance once again and provided a spectacle for the observers on the beach. The finishing crew consisted of Simon Mitris (sweep), Laura Cassidy, Emma Cassidy, Regan Smallacombe and Bernhard Viljoen. Laura, Emma and Regan have been members of the surf club since they were juniors and Bernie was our youngest rower to take part in the Big Row. All agreed they enjoyed the row and were very excited to partake of the tasty pizza supplied by club sponsor ‘Crust’! This year, once again under the direction of Barrie Cole, the school surf safety session was conducted with Stansbury, Edithburgh and Port Vincent Primary Schools, with a total of 50 children taking part. Roy Menner instructed a resuscitation session with the year 6 and 7 students, resulting in them being awarded their resuscitation certificates. Thanks goes to Barrie and his band of helpers for their fantastic involvement with the schools and community once again this year. This year’s event faced some challenges, mainly centring around the scheduling of the event. Unfortunately some scheduling conflicts meant the Big Row was held much later in the season, which lead to less presence on the beach this year. However, although we had less spectators at the event, this did not affect our fundraising efforts, as we managed to raise one of our highest amounts so far in Big Row history. We thank our sponsors for their ongoing support of the event. 2016 brings about the 10th Big Row for Henley, and we are hoping for a huge effort from all members to make it our best one yet. To continue the event for 10 years and for the event to get stronger every year, is a testament to the tenacity of our committee and club members and the loyalty of our sponsors and donors who continue to support our surf club each year. I would like to thank the Big Row Committee for their time and assistance, especially Rae Lawson, who did an outstanding job with the sponsor fundraising and other organising aspects of the event and Pete Oborn for being my general, all‐round, go‐to person.

House Committee Report The Henley bar and restaurant had a successful year, trading throughout summer and winter periods, opening more often, and staying open longer. Thursday nights and Sunday mornings are becoming somewhat of a tradition in the Square, while Friday nights and Saturday’s are building popularity. Being a seasonal business, the months between November and March are the busiest periods before a marked downturn in business through June, July and August. So far this winter we have done our best to keep overhead costs at a minimum without changing the opening hours. For the 2014/15 financial year, the top rooms will generate approximately $80,000 for an average profit of 10%. Although below our profit target, the figure is realistic for a seasonal restaurant and bar open four days a week. Obviously, the profit will not keep – and was never intended to keep ‐ the entire surf club financially viable. Megan Tudor and Chef Glenn Giancaspro have done a good job in making the restaurant and bar a vibrant place that is welcoming and fun. Two great reviews in the Advertiser and Sunday Mail helped with spreading the word about the quality food and service that accompanies the world‐beating view. Finally getting our bar tables set up also helped keep punters holding up the bar for longer. The bar hosted many club functions, including two very successful fundraising nights – the Triva Night and the Bogan Bingo Night – that not only helped raise funds for the club but also brought us all together. In the coming year we should aim to have four of these evenings in a year, on top of the regular presentation and end of season nights. An active social committee is a must to keep the bar profitable. More can be done, however, to improve the success of our clubrooms. More top‐end functions need to be booked – these make the club more money than simply being open to the public and will fill the Saturday night gap. Weekday conferences and meetings also help with the bottom line. We need to continuously spread the word that everyone is welcome in the top room, not just club members. But patronage by club members is the main area we need to improve. Club members need to support the bar and restaurant more. A look through the books found that only a small percentage of sales came from club members using their membership cards. So please patronize the club and bring your friends. Initiatives to entice members in 2015/16 will include a members’ draw on Friday evenings and having the downstairs patio set up for Saturday afternoon drinks and snacks. Finance Report

The overall strong financial position of the club has continued to be maintained in the 2014‐15 operating year, albeit it has been a year of significant change and not without it challenges. The closing cash position for the Club as at 30 April 2015 was $59,970, this compares to the opening balance position of $99,851. This decrease in the cash position is explained by the following main reasons:

Expenditure on building “fit out” items and general capital expenditure,

Higher cost of operations, particularly building services and utility charges

Decreased membership income,

Offset by

Impact of the Big Row and other fundraising event, and

Impact of increased trading income.

Capital Expenditure: During the year the Club incurred expenditure on capital items (assets) totaling $458,707 ($1,413,693 in 2013/14). The items purchased included: Capital costs (final payment) associated with the new Building $387,307 New Equipment: Plant and Equipment (including Building “fit out” items) $ 50,155 Competition/Lifesaving Equipment (Boards, skis, etc.,) $ 21,245 These purchases have to some extent been directly offset by various grants and sponsorships received during the year in addition to the application of the equipment funding levy, which raised $14,140 in 2014‐15). Seeking specific direct sponsorship for equipment continues to be actively pursued to ensure that the Club can continue to support equipment requirements into the future. As at 30 April 2015 the total book value of assets reported was $3,405,054 ($2,990,332 in 2014) consisting of the Building totally $3,038,411 ($2,651.107) and Plant & Equipment $366,643 ($339,225). Operating income for the year was $981,136 which was above that figure of $701,730 received in 2013‐14. The result is largely explained by:

Increased trading outcome due to club opening ($780,961 up from $490,133)

Grants, Sponsors and Fundraising ($98,203 down from $112,420)

Membership / Levy contribution ($72,585 down from $87,526)

It is noted that the membership figure includes the Building Fund Levy which amounted to a figure of $17,300 ($15,300 in 2013‐14 and total amount to date collected of $82,670) and the Equipment Levy which equated to a figure of $14,140 in 2014‐15.


These funds were used in a variety of outcomes including:

Lifesavings – administration, training, competition and operations of $58,040 ($48,417 in 2013‐14)

General Operations $50,082 ($36,120 in 2013‐14)

Building maintenance and operations $76,243 ($65,613 in 2013‐14)

The net operating result of the Club for 2014‐15 was $439,316 ($756,516 in 2013‐14). This result is reduced after taking in account the building funding specifically received to fund the development of the new building of $403,955 to an operating profit result of $35,361 ($76,045 in 2013‐14). This result reflects the higher costs incurred during 2014‐15 associated with the new building (increased utility charges, higher insurance costs, higher cleaning costs, interest charges, etc.), increased costs of lifesaving activities, lower membership levels and the lower level of grants and trust disbursements received. Included within this result was the trading account result of a Gross Profit of $85,191 ($79,663 in 2013‐14). The trading outcome for the bar/restaurant area equated to a 11.0% margin (operating result over total income) compared to 16.5% in 2013‐14. This reduction reflects an increase in cost of sales, particularly wage costs and highlights the fluctuating nature of the operation, particularly its seasonal nature. With the benefit of the experience gained over a full 12 months of trading, the House Committee is working to increase the overall financial performance of the trading facilities.. The retention of a strong cash position has been a focus for the Committee given the need to retain funds to ensure that the long term financial position of the Club is strong and the committee has worked diligently towards this objective, despite the last twelve months being a testing period. The Committee continues to review capital expenditure in line with the endorsed 5 year capital plan to ensure that the Club’s equipment is maintained at an appropriate level and to also keep up with the demand given the increasingly strong membership base. The building project added increased financial pressure in relation to the loan required to assist with the funding of the building. The original balance of $400,000 has been reduced to a balance of $265,000 as at 30 April 2015. This reduction is in line with the requirement to repay the $200,000 five year loan facility over this period. Income from club activities to support the funding requirements of the Club is derived from 4 key areas:

Membership – 7% (12% in 2012‐13)

Trading Activities – 80% (69% in 2012‐13)

Grants and Fundraising – 10% (16% in 2012‐13)

Other – 3% (2% in 2012‐13)

A strong membership base provides a strong financial base to support the ongoing operations of the club and hence retaining and increasing membership needs to be a key focus in coming seasons. The Big Row continues to be the key fundraising initiative for the Club. Sponsorships are also an important fundraising component and all sponsors should be congratulated for their invaluable and generous support of the Club. Grants made available by the Local Council, State Government and Federal Government are also critical. The club (and its finances) has again been well served over the past year by those members who put in an enormous amount of time on Grant applications, organizing the Big Row and raising funds through the BBQ on Saturdays and other activities. Without your time, effort and in some cases contacts, the Clubs’ financial position would not be as it is. Well done!


All these areas however, need to remain a strong focus for the Committee in coming years and the continued support and commitment from members will be required. The Club has over the past several years maintained a strong commitment to a solid financial base to enable it to move forward with the building project and protect its financial position post construction. Given the increased financial commitment of the loan repayment, combined with an ever increasing cost environment, the on‐going need to maintain a solid financial base remains paramount to the clubs long term financial stability. Note 1 Statement of Significant Accounting Policies The Financial Report is a general purpose financial report that has been prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standard, other mandatory professional requirements and the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (South Australia). The Financial Report covers Henley SLSC as an individual entity. Henley SLSC is an association incorporated in South Australia under the Associations Incorporations Act. The accounts have been prepared on the basis of historical costs and do not take into account the changing values or, except where stated, current valuations of non‐current assets. Cost is based on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for assets.


The following is a summary of the significant accounting policies adopted by the Club in the preparation of the financial report. The accounting policies have been consistently applied, unless other wise stated. (A) INCOME TAX

The Association is exempt from income tax under the provisions of Division 50 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997

(B) INVENTORIES Inventories are valued at the lower of cost and net realizable value.

(C) PROPERTY, PLANT AND EQUIPMENT The value of the Club’s Non‐Current Assets is reviewed annually by the Management Committee and they are of the opinion that the book value, after allowance for the current year’s depreciation charge, represents fairly their carrying values.

(D) CASH For the purposes of the Statement of Cash Flows, cash includes cash on hand and at bank.

(E) REVENUE Revenue from the sale of goods is recognized upon delivery of goods to customers. Interest Revenue is recognized on the basis of the interest rate applicable to the financial assets. Revenue from rendering of a service is recognized upon the delivery of a service to customers. All revenue is net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

(F) GOODS AND SERVICES TAX Revenues, expenses and assets are recognized net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Tax Office. In these circumstances the GST is recognized as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the Statement of Financial Position are shown inclusive of GST.

Auditor’s Report To the Members of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. SCOPE I have audited the financial report being the Statement of Financial Performance, Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Cash Flows, Notes to the Financial Statements and the Statement by members of the Committee of Henley Surf Life Saving Club Inc. set out on pages 71 to 75 for the year ended 30 April 2015. The Committee is responsible for the financial report. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members of the Club. My audit has been conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material misstatement. My procedures included examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial report and the evaluation of accounting policies and significant accounting estimates. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial report is presented fairly in accordance with applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements so as to present a view which is consistent with our understanding of the Club’s financial position, the results of its operations and cash flows. The audit opinion expressed has been formed on the above basis. QUALIFICATION Given the nature of the operations of the Henley Surf Life Saving Club inc. it is not practicable to establish accounting controls over all amounts receivable prior to the issue of a cash receipt and therefore it is not possible to know whether all income due to the Club has been received by the Club and recorded in the books of account. Accordingly, my audit has been limited to the amounts of cash receipts recorded in the books of account of the Club. AUDIT OPINION In my opinion, subject to the above qualification, the financial report presents fairly in accordance with the applicable Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory professional reporting requirements the financial position of Henley Surf Life Saving Cub Inc., as at 30 April 2015, and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended.

Life Membership Mark Travers Mark Travers joined the Henley club 2000, when he joined his children up for juniors and decided he would like to be involved. He gained his bronze medallion that season. Not only did he embrace being involved in the junior division he became very active in his patrolling duties. Mark is an executive for a large company and soon decided to offer his skills on the management committee and in 2002 joined as a committee person. In the first year he was on committee he was the major player of the committee restructure, restructuring the constitution and implementing the Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan was a 5 year blue print which forged the clubs future to where it is today. Mark ran SWOT Analysis sessions with senior members and concentrated on club structure, membership enhancement, and a financial plan for rebuilding in the future. The club has benefited greatly from this professional planning and Marks’ foresight. In 2004 Mark became the Finance Manager on the Management Committee and has held the position for the last 10 years. Again he has guided the club with budgeting and projected planning for the new building. He has provided the ‘SLSSA Trust” a professional proposal and application for the loan for the clubs’ contribution towards the 3.3 million dollar building we see as our clubhouse today. Mark during his time at the club also has been very professional on the beach and providing support in the junior division. He was made a patrol captain and his patrol won Patrol of the Year Award.

Lindy Lewis Lindy attained her surf bronze in 1996 and since that time has shown a conscientious approach to the Club and the well being of its members. Whilst actively engaged in the competition area, she entered into the management of the club. She studied the various avenues of achievements, such as Training Officer, Radio Officer, Spinal Management, Junior Activities Management Course, a recipient of a Defibribillator Certificate among other achievements In so doing she has reached the Surf Official title of Level ONE status. Her several terms as competitions manager of the Club, which ensured that all registrations for championship entries for the members competing in local competitions, and in particular the National Championships, were strictly adhered to. Her seeking out the accommodation requirements in close proximity to the Nationals location ensured that the travelling competitor members were relieved of that task, enabling them to concentrate on the purpose of their being there. There have been times when her involvement in taking care of the necessities of the members may have clashed with her own preparations. This may be considered by her many achievements in the number of medals she has gained in her chosen field of the Flags and Beach Sprints events.. Her prowess in regard to her sporting achievements have been gained whilst as a representative of the Henley SLSC.
