Guest speakers were MPP John Yakabuski, Champlain LHIN Chair Jean-Pierre Boisclair, and Medical Director of the Nephrology Program Dr. Nicole Delbrouck. RVH is the main site for all nephrology services provided to 100,000 residents of Renfrew County. Designated as a regional program by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in 1993, service began with four stations in Renfrew. In August 2011, with the program at full capacity and an ever- increasing need for services, the MOHLTC announced approval for a $12 million expansion with a grant in the amount of $9,627,900 as their portion of the project. ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

BUDGET We are pleased to report that we have achieved a balanced budget for the 26th consecutive year with a small surplus of $584,000 (combined operating and capital) for the period ending March 31, 2016. REGIONAL NEPHROLOGY CENTRE

On April 9, 2015 the grand opening of the RVH Regional Nephrology Centre was held with hospital officials, dignitaries, staff, clients and guests attending to mark the occasion. The opening of the new 23,000 square foot centre means every aspect of a kidney patients care i.e. education, clinics, and treatment are consolidated in the same area of the hospital. In August 2011, with the program at full capacity and an ever-increasing need for services, the MOHLTC announced approval for a $12 million expansion with a grant in the amount of $9,627,900 as their portion of the project. Construction of the main building started April 1st, 2014 with occupancy on March 25, 2015.

VICTORIA SCHOOL OF NURSING RVH hosted a very special National Nursing Week celebration on May 13, 2015 with High Tea. Graduates or their representatives reunited on the 50th anniversary of the last graduating class of the Victoria School of Nursing. The school operated from 1902 to 1965. The earliest graduates attending were from 1945 and the earliest class represented was from 1922. The RVH School of Nursing played an important role in our hospital and our community. ONCOLOGY

The Oncology program has been relocated to space vacated by the Dialysis program. The retrofit of the Dialysis space and equipping of the Oncology program was approved at a cost of approximately $1 million. Construction started in May 2015 and completed December 4, 2015. BOARD RETREAT On December 8, 2015, a retreat for Board Directors, senior administration, managers and department heads from Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) and St. Francis Memorial Hospital (SFMH) was held in Renfrew. Guest speakers included Dr. Jack Kitts, CEO of The Ottawa Hospital, Chantale LeClerc, CEO of the Champlain LHIN, and Chris Power, CEO of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. The speakers’ presentations led to discussion among the two Boards, who convened separately to review their organization’s strategic plan, mission, vision and values. The day was a great success and very fitting to have RVH and SFMH join together as we continue to collaborate and integrate our services and programs. ROAD ALLOWANCE

The Town of Renfrew agreed to build a new road to provide better access to the medical building proposed for Albert Street. Construction will begin once approval of the plans have been received that will accommodate doctors’ offices and other health care services. The new road will link to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital campus, Bonnechere Manor, Groves Park Lodge, Quail Creek Retirement Residence, and Renfrew Hospice to improve traffic flow. In addition, emergency preparedness in the community will be improved, along with alternate routes for fire, ambulance, police and other emergency services. BEST PRACTICE SPOTLIGHT ORGANIZATION

RNAO’s 50 best practices offer guidance to health care professionals in a variety of areas, from prevention and/or treatment of pressure ulcers, diabetes, hypertension and asthma to pain management and the prevention of falls. The world-renowned BPGs have been implemented at health care institutions across Canada. Every 3 years, the RNAO opens a request for proposals to organizations to implement and evaluate BPGs as part of the BPSO Designation program. In February 2015, the RVH nursing team received notice that its submission was successful. RVH is concentrating on Person/Family Centered Care, Screening for Delirium, Decision Support for Adults Living with Chronic Kidney Disease, Assessment and Management of Pain, and Women abuse: screening, identification and initial response in the Emergency Department.

ICELANDIC DELEGATION RVH hosted a group of health care officials from Iceland on September 23, 2015, during one of their stops on a tour of select hospitals in Eastern Ontario and Toronto. The group of delegates were comprised of hospital CEOs and representatives from various health care organizations in Iceland. BRAZILIAN DELEGATION RVH hosted a group of health care professionals from Brazil on October 6, 2015, to learn more about operating a small community hospital and gain insight into how the organization obtains the highest standing in accreditation.

MEDICAL STAFF

RVH started a new partnership with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) for echocardiograms that went live January 21, 2016. The echo-cardiograms are done at RVH and read by cardiac specialists at the Heart Institute which means decreased wait times for testing in Ottawa. The first RVH congestive heart failure clinic was held in December 2015 with a UOHI cardiologist. This clinic provides advanced heart function care so patients don’t have to travel to Ottawa. Dr. Alex Porte temporarily took over surgical duties for Dr. Susan Krajewski who went on maternity leave. Dr. Geena Joseph, Nephrologist, will be joining our Regional Nephrology Program on July 1, 2016. She will be working with Dr. Nicole Delbrouck and Dr. Amtul Musawir on a shared model of care. Dr. Tara Avelino and Dr. Anthony DeJesus, Family Practitioners, have moved to the area and will be part of our Medical Staff this summer. We continue to participate in the education and training of medical students and residents under the direct supervision of physicians. Despite positive reports, numerous challenges remain for our Medical Staff and our Hospital. The average age of our existing pool of physicians is such that we will need to remain diligent in the physician recruitment process. We continue to have strong relationships with the Hospital Administration and Board of Directors as we maintain and advance the medical services we provide.
