After working in the corporate sector for about 15 years, I finally decided to follow my passionate

dream of working in the social service field and hustling to make my dream foundation true. I started

Swastik in 2016 along with Mr. Avinash Phatak and Deepika Rambade. It was a huge relief to have

people who believed in my journey and my values. Together, we began our work, taking baby steps.

We faced a lot of difficulties in the beginning, and financial setbacks weren’t the only setbacks.

While I was completing my Bachelor’s Degree in History I did some internship at small NGOs and I

understood my drive. Hence, I opted for masters in social work. But it was years later that I actually

started building my dream of Swastik foundation.

There is a dire need of medical aid for needy people, that fact itself was a driving force behind my

Born in a middle class family, I saw poverty and hardships from a very young age. Education was

not a luxury for me but a way out of my then situation. In very difficult situations, I completed my

B.A.M.A. in Mumbai University and Masters in Social Work from Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune.

From a young age I wanted to help people and give back to the society and the country that gave me

an opportunity to become the individual self that I am today. This feeling developed strongly as I

completed my higher studies and were nurtured further when I joined hands in the making of Swastik

Foundation.

The journey of Swastik Foundation that began in 2016 wasn’t an easy one. We had to face many issues

in registering the NGO, doing all the paper work and working at the grass root level. I am very proud

to be a part of Swastik Foundation and I hope that we can continue to work on practical solutions in

the fields of Social Work.

When we started out we knew our destination but the journey was something that taught us, inspired

us, challenged us and made us believe in our dreams more than ever.

Deepika Rambade

Founder, Swastik Foundation

Since a very young age I was drawn to the concept of helping the society and others as both my parents

were social workers. I belonged to a humble family residing in Parel and finished my education from

R.M Bhat High school in Parel itself. With my job in the BMC for the past 30 years I kept my

association with the Sane Guruji Baal Vilas Mandir for about 20 years. I conducted Elocution and

Drawing competitions in the school. In the areas of Karjat, Goregaon, Koloshi and Hadpid etc. we

started organising workshops for the poor children who sought help to support their education. We

conducted medical camps, eye checkup camps, food grains donations, clothes donation programs in

the areas mentioned above. My daughter's untimely and unfortunate death gave birth to the idea of

the Old age home. And so the old age home in Asalade came into existence.

Ideally, India’s constitution guarantees free healthcare for all its citizens. All government hospitals are

required to provide free of cost healthcare facilities to the patients. Each district headquarters in most

states have one or more Government hospitals where everything from diagnosis to medicine is supposed

to be given for free. But unfortunately, these healthcare facilities do not come handy to the poor and

under privileged people of our society.

Following the 2014 election which brought Prime Minister Narendra Modi to office, Modi's government

unveiled plans for a nationwide universal health care system known as the National Health Assurance

Mission, which would provide all citizens with free drugs, diagnostic treatments, and insurance for

serious ailments. However, in 2015, the implementation of the universal health care system was delayed

due to some budgetary concerns.

Despite the various health schemes and medical facilities that are proposed every year for the betterment

of the society, they do not reach the poor and needy resulting in fewer options for the poor to access

health care services.

At Swastik, we conducted surveys in areas of Mahim, Parel, Seawoods, Kurla, Vashi and in remote rural

areas of Karjat and Mumbai and we found out that people lack basic medical awareness. Women are

careless about their personal hygiene, alcohol and substance abuse causes many ailments in men and

children are falling sick due to unclean surroundings and malnutrition.

As our prime initiative, through our foundation, we arranged medical camps, eye checkups and health

care awareness programmes. To help improve our current health care state. We thought that specific

concentrated small scale camps and awareness drives will yield better and effective results. Through the

awareness drive, we intend to educate the Women and Youth about the importance of health care,

personal hygiene and medical care.

On 19 July, 2016, Swastik Foundation organized its First Health

Camp in Khadakpada, Aarey Colony, Goregaon in Mumbai.

Khadakpada is a tribal community area. The tribal community

still lives very primitively and most men and women do labour

jobs. Their economic status is below poverty line and hence

their lack of education deprives them of taking help of any free

health care available in and around Goregaon. Hence, our free

medical camp was very fruitful and useful to these people. With

the help of L&T, Swastik Foundation provided free health

checkup, free medicines, for persons who needed them and

counseling to over 120-150 adults, both females and males and

about a 100 children too. Special counseling was held for

patients who suffer from Alcohol and tobacco addictions. They

were educated on the ill effects of tobacco and alcohol on body

and also taught of ways to stop the addiction. The first health

camp was a huge success as we managed to achieve what we

had planned for.

create a space for the seniors who are no longer appreciated

by their own families. A home for them away from theirs,

where they feel wanted, loved, respected and lead a happy,

healthy life without any remorse. On 25 February, 2017,

Swastik Foundation’s Old Age Home was inaugurated by

In the coming years, we plan to build more old age homes with bigger capacities and

facilities to aid more numbers of abandoned elderly citizens of our society.

We also plan to open a home for Women who are alone, abandoned by family etc and

provide them with opportunities to lead a respectable life on their own.

We plan to provide more and more educational amenities such as school kits, texts

books and bags etc to poor children from the tribal area.

In future, we would love to grant scholarships to bright students from poor families so

that their poverty is not a hindrance to their future.

We will strive harder to arrange more and more medical camps, free medicinal aid, eye

checkups and special checkups for women from the poor sections of the society.
