The Banaras Hindu University, the temple of learning, was founded by
great educationist, visionary Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan
Mohan Malaviyaji in the year 1916. Since then the University has
continuous development in all the fields of education in the country.
The founder of the Institute of Medical Sciences was Padmashri
Prof.K.N.Udupa, who has established a unique Institution under one
roof, which imparts education to the students in Modern Medicine,
Ayurveda, Dental Sciences and Nursing. On this occasion, I on behalf
of entire Institute fraternity pay reverence to these great dignitaries. In
the recent past, certain new developments have occurred namely
creation of Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre, Centenary
Superspeciality Hospital, National Skill Centre, Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation Centre and Telemedicine etc with support of Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The Institute
possess a high profile in the field of medical education, research and
patient care in the country.
I take this opportunity to welcome you all on the occasion of 57th
Annual Day Celebration of our Institute. Today, I am pleased to inform
you that our Institute has been ranked among top ten medical
institutions of the country during last several years. I am presenting

Dr. Vishal Krishna Pai , JR - III - got WFSA Baxter Scholar Award to attend the World Congress of Anesthesiology in Hong Kong, 2016 Dr. Ronak Rajen Mankodi JR-III- received first prize in poster presentation in UP CRITICON 2016. Dr.Amiya Barik JR-III – Won Dr.D.D.Verma best PG paper award in UP ISACON 2016 and received TN Jha and Chansoriya Grant to ISACON , Ludhiana , Punjab. He also won first prize in online quiz competition in ISACON 2016. Dr. Kumari Sneha JR -II received Usha Mehta Award in Poster Presentation in RASPCON 2016

Sri Om Prakash Singh also got Rashtriya Gaurav Award; American Association of Immunologists (USA) International travel award& Young Scientist Award for best presentation in BIOKUMBH-2016 and attended International Congress on Immunology-2016 held at Melbourne from 21-26 August,2016.
Ms.Bhawana Singh, Ph.D.Scholar got travel award from ICGEB for oral presentation in Workshop on Molecular Biology of Leishmania in Trieste(Italy); Awarded travel award from DST for attending International Congress of Immunology-2016; Selected for travel award from ICMR, DBT and Centre for International Cooperation in Science (CISC) for attending International Congress of Immunology-2016. 2016: Selected for travel award from for attending International Congress of Immunology-2016. She also got Young Investigators travel award from International Society for Infectious Diseases for 17th International Congress on Infectious Disease.

Dr. Chandra Bhan Pratap; Postdoctoral Fellow got DST-Fast Track Young Scientist, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi; UGC-Postdoctoral Fellowship, UGC-New Delhi Ms. Pallavi Sinha, Res. Scholar published two Papers in International journals and one in National journal and Mr. Ashish Kumar Singh, Res. Scholar published one paper in International Journal.
Neurology
Residents participated annual sports events and presented paper and attended academic programme. Five articles has been published in Lancet by Shri Dinesh Chandra Sharma, Ph.D. scholar.
Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Dr.Gayatri got 1st Prize and Dr.Abha got 3rd Prize in Paper presentation at SAVMA 2016 at Allahabad. Dr. Akansha and Dr. Nikita got 2nd prize in extempore in All India FOGSI FORCE, Teaching Delegation, 2016 at Allahabad.

Dr. Gomathi G, Resident, participated in national training programme in Pharmacology Research and Education at Sri Ramachandra institute of Medical Sciences, Chennai and also Research Design in Clinical Pharmacology Workshop.

Junior & Senior Residents and Ph.D. scholar of the department are actively involved in Children Film Bonanza and other events held during Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsava - 2016 Festival organized by Ministry of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi, at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, from 18 to 24 Dec 2016. Junior Residents and Ph.D. scholars of the department participated in Workshop and presented papers during scientific sessions in 7th World Ayurveda Congress, Kolkata, West Bengal from 01 to 04 December 2016. Senior Residents and Ph.D. scholars had taken classes for the students of B. Pharma (Ay) and M. Pharma (Ay) at Rajiv Gandhi South Campus (BHU), Barkaccha, during the session of 2016- 2017. Junior Residents of department have visited Haridwar, Dehradun, Uttrakhand, for their educational tour from 27 to 31 Jan 2017.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES
The matches for IMS Annual Sports Meet was started on February 9, 2017 and concluded on March 7, 2017. The tournament was held for 12 indoor and many outdoor games. Tournament was started with cricket which was followed by other events like Volleyball, Kabaddi, Football, Basketball, Chess, Carrom, Table Tennis , Badminton, Shooting, Lawn Tennis and Kho-Kho.
Kho-Kho was introduced for the first time in the history of IMS Annual Sports Meet in which MBBS 013 Batch emerged out to be the Champion.
Games were held out at different venues which includes Ruiya Ground, Amphitheater ground, Indoor Stadium and IMS New Lecture Theatre Complex.
A total of 19 teams from Faculty of Modern Medicine, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Faculty of Ayurveda and College of Nursing competed for IMS Cricket Trophy. Faculty and Staff members of IMS also participated actively in the games. In the finals MBBS 013 and MBBS 015 were head to head in which MBBS 015 batch emerged out as champion. It was a thrilling final as it was expected to be and this match was watched by more than 200 spectators.
A MINI MARATHON/WALKATHON with theme “Say No to Plastic bags” was organized on February 26, 2017. Prof. VK Shukla, Director IMS BHU flagged off the Marathon in which UGs, PGs, Teaching Staff, Non- teaching staff and wards of the staff participated in large numbers.
All the indoor and outdoor events were followed by Athletics Meet which was held from March 5 – 7, 2017. Prof. V.K. Shukla, Director IMS BHU inaugurated the event. There were around 500 participants in various track and field events. Dr. Subodh Kumar, Prof. Arvind Joshi, Prof. UP Shahi, Prof. TP Chaturvedi, Prof. Gopal Nath and Dr. Ritu Garg were our guests of honour.
Valedictory function was held on March 7, 2017 and Chief Guest was Prof. Jai Prakash, Dean, IMS BHU and Guest of Honour was Dr OP Upadhyay, Medical Superintendant SS Hospital.

Forensic Medicine Department rendered medicolegal post-mortem services of entire Varanasi district numbering 2167 post-mortem cases this year (with day and night and all 365 days working) and also rendered expert services of other districts of eastern UP as conduction of referred medicolegal post-mortem cases. The faculty members of the department are rendering

consultancy services to the medicolegal works of SSL hostpital, BHU and also providing medicolegal expert opinion in difficult, unsolved and complicated criminal cases to the civil police,Crime Branch of Crime Investigation Department Varanasi zone and other zones of UP state and different courts/ judiciary. Faculty members of the department are conducting medicolegal post-mortem on two days on the week, i.e., on Thursday and Friday regularly/ routinely and as experts on rest of the week days.

Projects running in College of Nursing:
National Health Mission recognizes the need of strengthening and equipping the basic service provider, auxiliary nurse midwife and other nursing staff to provide reproductive health and maternal, neonatal and child health services at the grassroots level.
The objective of this project is to strengthen the College of Nursing, Varanasi for enabling it to act and assume responsibilities of the state Nodal Centre for improving pre service education for nursing midwifery cadre in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
There are one state Nodal Centres of Excellence in the UP state. College of Nursing, IMS, BHU is selected as state Nodal Centre. The name of funding agency is National Health Mission and Technical support from Jhpiego for strengthening the Nursing College and establishes it as state Nodal Centre.

SIR SUNDERLAL HOSPITAL
Sir Sunderlal hospital is a teaching and training Hospital for imparting clinical teaching and training to the students of Institute of Medical Sciences. Established way back in the year 1926 with bed strength of 96 beds, it is now a modern hospital with 1500 beds. It is the only tertiary care referral centre for the entire eastern UP, western Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh & neighbouring country Nepal catering to the medical needs of about more than 20 Crore population. It houses both Modern Medicine and Indian Medicine disciplines under one roof. Recently a new 60 bedded air-conditioned EOPD building has been added.
The S.S. Hospital runs on the regular maintenance grant as well as ad-hoc development grants from University Grants Commission. Besides it also generates a part of its own financial support in the form of Revolving Fund through its earnings from the user charges for its services from the patients. A number of SPECIAL CLINICS are also being run to meet out the specific needs :-

2. Prompt and immediate care of the patient coming to Emergency, where is a facility of Registration, Treatment and Investigations under one roof and report is also ready within half-an-hour. (Cardiac Profile, ABG with Electrolyte, Rapid Test for Dengue, CBC, Paracheck, U.S.G., etc.)
3. The bed strength of the Hospital has been increased from 1254 to 1500 as per MCI guidelines.
4. First time after two decades, free distribution of food (Lunch and Dinner both) to the poor patients of the Hospital.
5. Hi-Tech updated ICU with 16 beds now commissioned.
6. Tree Plantation and beautification of surrounding areas of Hospital. Fencing of Psychiatric road.
7. For the convenience of patients new 20 water coolers have been installed in different areas of Hospital.
8. LED TV installed at different areas of the Hospital for educational program to the patients.
9. Enhancement of Blood Bank facilities. New unit of HbA1c test is started in Blood Bank.

11. Sanction of 200 crore for 500 bedded Centenary superspeciality complex.
12. Sanction of 580 crore for 250 bedded Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre. Foundation laid by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 22.12.2016.
