A word from the PresidentDear Members and Supporters,

Your Packy Offield Trail Center is now up and running! And it has lifted the use, value, and future of our trail system to a much higher orbit. As we continue to build trails, we can now add the key programs that also build our communities:

• Structured events emphasizing health and wellness at the Trail Center and on the trail.• Safety training and programs in schools, at the Trail Center and on the trail.• Kids’ programs/adventures professionally structured and led from The Trail Center.• Community trailhead development and grant writing to advance the number of Trail

Towns.• Trail Town Economics training and programs based at The Trail Center and in Northern

Michigan communities.• Standardized maintenance support to the trail communities.• An “open door” policy at The Trails Center during business hours: volunteers and staff

will greet visitors offering assistance through maps, a computer kiosk, and business referrals.

The Trails Council has enjoyed a successful past, but with our move to the new Trail Center, our success has the potential to grow exponentially. As I see it, our programs are now more so. Our staff is now more so. Our opportunities are now more so. All of these opportunities depend on the support of our membership and the communities served by our trails system. We have great momentum that has resulted from the support of our members and donors. We hope that you will continue to partner with us as we leverage our hard-earned trail assets into benefits for all of Northern Michigan.

Your Trails Council is a nonprofit community-funded organization. Our trails and programs happen through your annual memberships and financial support. I ask that you renew your membership now—and tell your friends. I ask that you place us on your worthy list of annual donations—and tell your friends. The Top of Michigan Trails Council offers a strong payback to our Northern Michigan communities.

“First a community builds its trails, then those trails build that community.”Thanking you for your strong support over the past year,

Stephen Biggs President, TOMTC

TestimonialsIt’s easy to find fans of our trails. In our new location, with the warming of spring, they are out in droves, and many stop in to tell their story of why they are a fan. We reached out to some of our friends from across Northern Michigan to ask them why trails are important to them, and this is what we learned:Top of Michigan Trails are…

“…an economic driver…”The Northeastern State Trail is a personal asset for us because of its convenience, seclusion, and natural beauty. It has a direct financial benefit for the communities that it connects, and is an economic driver for the remainder of Northern Michigan as a whole. Our out-of-town guests marvel at the impeccable condition of the trail. It has an impressive impact on active adults that want to include recreational access in their lifestyle. As we further develop

our community, we have incorporated the trail system into our infrastructure design. We know, through a recent housing study that we partnered on with MHSDA, that well-maintained recreational opportunities are important assets for attracting families looking to relocate to our area. Tom Moran and Marilyn Kapp Moran, Onaway“…a public health resource…”

The TOMTC trail system is fabulous! As public health and public policy professionals, we are keenly aware of the value of trails to the people and communities in our part of the state. Multi-use recreational trails improve the quality of life in Northern Michigan by offering a wonderful asset for recreational opportunities. Trails also serve as a public health resource, by encouraging physical activity among the residents of our communities. In addition, trails help to bolster the local economy by improving property values and drawing tourists to the area to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful “Up North” vistas.Personally, we have enjoyed walking and bicycling many miles on the scenic Little Traverse Wheelway, the North Central State Trail, and the North Eastern State Trail. Most recently, the development and improvement of the North Western State Trail (which is conveniently available

right outside our front door!) has provided us with opportunities to safely ride north to Mackinaw City or south to Petoskey and the Little Traverse Wheelway on a protected trail, away from vehicular traffic. We also look forward to the further development of the Burt Lake Trail, which will connect us to the communities all along the North Central State Trail. We plan to enjoy the use of TOMTC trails for many years to come! Testimonials“…the reason my family relocated…”

It is no exaggeration to say that Little Traverse Wheelway is the reason my family relocated from Chicago to Northern Michigan. On a gorgeous, sunny day, I was biking the stretch of trail between Petoskey and Bay Harbor, and the beauty of Lake Michigan rivalled that of the Caribbean Sea. As I marveled at the scenery, I thought, “This is where I want to be and where I want to raise my kids; this is the life I want to share with them as they grow up.” Our ride that day lit a spark, and although it took a little time, we made the dream of living in Northern Michigan come true. Biking on the trail is still my favorite thing to do, whether by myself or with my family, and when our friends and family visit, biking that same stretch of the trail is always one of the biggest highlights of their trip. Claire Forster, Petoskey“…an opportunity to keep cycling into my 90’s…”

You could say I’m an avid user of our Northern Michigan trail system. My favorite route is Spring Lake Park to Alanson and back on the North West State Trail.I’m a World War II veteran (Airborne Paratroop Division), and I retired in my early 60’s from my position as National Sales Manager for Chelsea Milling (of “Jiffy Mix” fame). I’ve been on a bike since I was eight, and in my late 50’s I took up mountain biking. After retirement, I began more serious road biking and off-road mountain biking. Now I’m 89 years young, and I enjoy riding my “Terra Trike” on the trails of Northern Michigan. I especially enjoy the scenery, relaxation, exercise and camaraderie of cycling with

friends. The trails offer me an opportunity to continue exercising and cycling into my 90’s. Bob Rutherford, Harbor Springs
