It is with pleasure that I invite you to review the South Street Seaport Museum’s 2018 Annual Report, prepared by the Seaport Museum’s expert and enthusiastic staff. Beyond thanking our donors, volunteers, members, and staff, this Report serves as a window into the Museum’s 2018 efforts, and highlights three principal activities: the tug W.O. Decker’s restoration, the Erie Canal Bicentennial Voyage, and the activation of our beautifully restored ship Wavertree. As you continue reading, please bear in mind that these successes are possible only because of the support we receive from individuals like you.

2018 was a year in which we developed and strengthened our partnerships across many programmatic areas. The Museum collaborated with Columbia University’s GSAPP Masters (M.S.) in Historic Preservation Program to research, study, and treat selected areas of the remains of the old hotels in Schermerhorn Row. We also partnered with the Lake Erie Maritime Museum and Flagship Niagara League to enable Lettie G. Howard to provide public and school group programming for residents of Western New York. And, as you’ll read later in this report, the Museum partnered with Corning Museum of Glass to serve as maritime operator for the GlassBarge voyage in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the start of construction of the Erie Canal, thus linking the history of our port with the remarkable history of the Erie Canal.

The past year was also an important one for the Seaport Museum’s leadership. The Museum’s

Board of Trustees graduated from under the wing of the City and became an independent Board in early 2018. One of our first acts was to name Capt. Jonathan Boulware as the President and CEO, to signal our expanded ambitions for our Museum and historic district.

As the newly elected Chairman of this Board, I am grateful for the opportunity to use my 30-year experience as a City employee and my love for the Seaport Museum to help move the organization forward. I am also pleased to report that in 2018 the Board elected a new Trustee, Craig Page, who brings with him over ten years of financial and operational experience, most recently as the Founder of Salt and Sea Partners LLC.

I’d like to give special thanks to Ernest Tollerson, Museum Trustee, and his wife Katrinka Leefmans, who together offered a successful dollar-for-dollar match for our 2018 Giving Tuesday campaign. All of these partnerships and collaborations provided meaningful opportunities for the Museum to share our expertise and broaden our constituencies.

As we reflect on 2018, you can see that we have much to be proud of and thankful for. On behalf of the South Street Seaport Museum’s Board of Trustees, I thank you for your commitment and participation with us. I encourage you to explore our 2018 Annual Report and invite you to visit our website later in the year to view our 990.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTIn 2018 the South Street Seaport Museum’s partnerships and collaborations reinforced our mission to tell the story of “Where New York Begins.” We served New Yorkers and visitors alike, by providing high-caliber landside and on-water programming for school groups, families and the general public. Maybe you joined us for a letterpress workshop at Bowne, or a harbor sail on Pioneer, or simply explored our exhibitions at 12 Fulton Street. I want to offer special thanks to our 2018 partners, collaborators, donors, volunteers, members, friends and staff.

In addition to the many programmatic successes of 2018, the Museum took another huge stride forward: after nearly five years of City stewardship through leadership at the Board level, the Museum transitioned to an independent Board of Trustees, positioning us to stand solidly as an independent not-for-profit museum once again. We welcomed a new Chairman—Brendan Sexton—and thanked the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for his role as Chairman during recent years. Fifty-two years ago the founders of the Seaport Museum sought to preserve the South Street Seaport Historic District and create a cultural anchor in the district, and we feel a great sense of honor and duty as we continue to work at advancing the Seaport Museum.

This year was also marked by the passing of several important people who helped the Museum survive and thrive throughout our 52-year history. We are grateful to Robert G.M. Keating (Former Board Chairman), Thomas J. Gochberg (Former Trustee), Jakob Isbrandtsen (Founding Chairman), and Jack Putnam (Former Staff Historian), who

all worked tirelessly to advance the Museum during their lives, most of them over decades. We honor their collective wisdom, passion, and commitment to the Seaport Museum.

Your participation – gifts of funds and gifts of time – provided essential resources for the Museum to continue to serve New York City residents, students, and visitors.

2018 participation highlights include:

• 144 New Donors

• 120 Continuing Donors

• 110 Returning Donors

• 195 New Volunteers

• 104 Continuing Volunteers

I’m very proud of our achievements in 2018. But more, I’m proud of the work we’ve done together—staff, trustees, members, donors, volunteers, and friends—since the Museum re-emerged post-Sandy. We remain grateful to everyone in our community who shares our passion and enthusiasm for the South Street Seaport Museum. Please mark your calendar for our Fall Celebration scheduled for Thursday, September 19, 2019.

I look forward to seeing you soon at South Street!

Mark Richard Myers, American (b. 1945) | Wavertree, Calcutta, July-November 1895, 1970 | paper, ink Gift of Renee Weinstein | South Street Seaport Museum, 2006.010.0005

Wavertree, a fairly common cargo ship from the latter days of the Age of Sail, today stands alone in the East River, an

archetypal representation of her many sister ships that called at South Street. She is the very type of ship that made New

York the busiest port in the world and the global city it is today. In 2018 the Seaport Museum staff, as a part of the long-

term activation plan for Wavertree, installed the first phase of Wavertree’s exhibition. Interpretive panels can be found at key points throughout the ship, inviting each visitor to imagine New

York at one of the most important times in American history. —CAPT. JONATHAN BOULWARE, President and CEO

DECKER RESTORATIONIn 2018, our beloved tug W.O. Decker underwent a thorough overhaul and returned to the Museum gloriously restored, thanks to public, private, and volunteer support. Last fall, Decker participated in the Great North River Tugboat Race and the Waterfront Alliance Heroes of the Harbor Parade of Boats. In 2019, Decker will once again serve as an educational and public sail platform and will participate in ongoing bicentennial celebrations of the Erie Canal.

ERIE CANAL BICENTENNIAL VOYAGEThis past summer, the Museum teamed up with the Corning Museum of Glass to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the start of construction on the Erie Canal. The voyage of the GlassBarge brought exhibits and hands-on demonstrations by the Seaport Museum to residents and visitors up the Hudson River and along the Canal.

Participants at stops along the lower Hudson learned that New York City would never have achieved prominence without the Erie Canal, which expanded the reach of trade into western New York and beyond. Those in central and western New York had a very different perspective, and realized that the Erie Canal didn’t really end in Albany—the real destination was New York City. Through this partnership, the Museum shared its mission and one part of the story of “Where New York Begins” with new groups of constituents throughout New York State.

Special thanks to all who attended our 2018 Fall Celebration aboard the tall ship Wavertree last

September. The evening was magical; guests learned about the Museum’s principal activities,

shared stories of the seaport, and made new memories under Wavertree’s majestic rigging.
