I’ve been busy with the Sharing Our Skillsgroup on making us the best publicspeakers and training providers we can be.This means we can help venues include andwelcome people with learning disabilities totheir events. We need to make the artsmore accessible for everyone – and we will.Our Report reflects how vibrant and action-packed Carousel is and I for one lookforward to being even more bold and reallysmashing it out there!Sarah WatsonChair of Trustees

CAROUSEL RADIO) In May 2018, Carousel Radio was awardedGold at the British Podcast Awards in theRepresent category, supported by Twitter. Franand Davot from the team went to London tocollect the award. They said: “We’re very happyand excited to have won! We’d like to thank all thelisteners of Carousel Radio.”

The British Podcast Awards Judging Panel said:“A podcast that platforms voices we genuinely feelhave been filtered out of UK media. Refreshing andtotally unpredictable, this is a highly original listen.”

YOUNG OSKA BRIGHT) Young Oska Bright won the Creative LearningGuild’s Cultural Charity Award in March 2019.Awards Judge Ben Sandbrook, Founder of WorldPencil said “Carousel's Young Oska Bright FilmFestival really champions, celebrates and, mostimportantly, empowers the creative work of youngpeople with learning difficulties. Their well thought-out approach delivers both impact and legacy on avery tight resource and their work deserves all therecognition it can get.”

THE ROCK HOUSE) The Rock House was shortlisted for anAttitude is Everything Award.

OSKA BRIGHT FILM FESTIVAL) Oska Bright Film Festival was shortlisted forthe Creative and Cultural Skills Awards.

YOUNG CAROUSEL) Our work with young people was selected byGlobal Make Some Noise as one of its supportedcharities. “Global’s Make Some Noise is proud tosupport ‘Young Carousel’ – a range of projects usingmusic, radio and film to provide a means ofcommunication and expression for young people withlearning disabilities to ‘make some noise’ of theirown.” A fundraising drive ran throughout the year.

MAGPIE) Drake Music Emergent Artist Award winnerLouis Walkden wrote, composed and recordedMagpie about his love of charity shops andbeing environmentally aware. “Come oneveryone show you care. Use it again don’t throwit away. Let’s have it another day.”The promotional video was made at SOLDcharity shop in Shoreham.

SAME SKY) We continued working with Same Sky to makeBrighton-wide celebratory events accessible tolearning disabled children, their families andcarers. Live feeds for the Children’s Parade inMay and Burning The Clocks in December, hostedby Jason Eade, were viewed more than 2,800times via Facebook.www.facebook.com/burningtheclocks/A collaboration between musician Shaun Moorand sound artist Jamie Sturrock resulted in anew piece of music performed for audiences atBurning The Clocks. Both artists are keen tocontinue to work together in the future.

STOPGAP DANCE COMPANY) A new collaboration with Stopgap DanceCompany began this year bringing togetherchoreographer Chris Pavia with Carouselartists Jason Eade and William Hanekomdesigning digital projections. The 20 minuteduet, The Journey Between tours in 2019-2020.

SCREEN ARCHIVE SOUTH EAST) Screen Archive South East were partnerson the Silver Screen project. Early Brightonand Hove films from the archive providedinspiration for young people to explore theirown creative ideas. The project was supportedby the Heritage Lottery Fund.

DIFFERENT PLANET ARTS) Carousel supported Ariane Hadjilias fromDifferent Planet Arts to develop her organisationand learn from Carousel’s experience. The company works with learning disabled childrenand their support groups in playful, accessible arts activities.

CO-CREATING CHANGE) Co-Creating Change is a network andprogramme which explores the role which artists,cultural organisations and communities can play to co-create change together around the UK andbeyond. Carousel is a partner in this nationalcampaign, ensuring learning disabled artists play a part in its future.

ST JOHN’S COLLEGE) School Of Rock House is a partnership with St John’s College comprising college leavers.Carousel worked with musicians to develop a band– The Black Bawlerz, that will join the roster ofCarousel talent playing at The Rock House.

) A core team of volunteers underpin much of our work. They are essential to our eventsmanagement and we are hugely grateful for theircontinued support. Carousel offers rewardingand worthwhile volunteer opportunities. Get in touch if you’d like to join the team!

T H E RO C K H O U S E F E S T I VA L) The second Rock House Festival took over Brighton’s GreenDoor Store for a full day of bands, some with and some withoutlearning disabilities. Around 200 people came to see FragileCreatures, Beat Express, Projector, Other States, Too Hot ForCandy, Electric Fire, Witching Waves, Grasshopper, Akuwar,Fuzzbomb Flashband and Louis Walkden.

“Haven’t had so much fun at a show in ages.”The Festival is an extended version of the monthly Rock Housegigs at the Green Door Store which this year gave the stage to 23 learning disabled bands from around the country to anaudience of over 1,000 people.

Carousel offers opportunities forlearning disabled musicians at differentstages of their careers, from youngbeginners to established artists.

) This year we supported singer songwriterLouis Walkden to apply for and subsequentlyreceive an Emergent Artist Commission fromDrake Music. Between January and June,Carousel worked with Louis to write and record anew piece of music called Magpie about his loveof charity shops, and make a music video topromote it. We also offered a number of learning disabledartists bespoke support packages this yearincluding recording an EP for Worthing basedband The Revs, rehearsing a band to performwith Lee Hubbard’s Bubbaloo at two events andrecording a new EP for long-time Carouselperformer Richard Watson.We have been working in partnership with StJohn’s College to form a new band of collegeleavers. Initially called School of Rock House it ishoped the band will be independently successfulin the year to come.

THE DANIEL WAKEFORD EXPERIENCE) Following a hugely successful touring year,The Daniel Wakeford Experience (TDWE) washelped to develop independence from Carouseland now employs a manager and his band.Together they toured 25 venues from April toDecember 2018. TDWE’s second full length release, That’s How ISee It was released independently by Daniel andhis label Common Raven Records in September2018. An album launch in his hometown ofBrighton at the iconic BA i360 was live streamedto over 15,000 viewers.Daniel made national TV appearances to promotehis music on Good Morning Britain with presscoverage in The Daily Mirror.Find out what Daniel is up to next on Facebook@thedanielwakeford

CAROUSEL CHORUS) Over the course of the year, the group hasworked on individual technical singing, voicecontrol, harmony, group singing and mictechniques. There has also been an emphasison writing original material, exploring methodsof lyric writing, melody and harmony. TheChorus composed five songs across the yearand made their debut public performance atthe Brighton & Hove Mayor’s Variety Ball infront of 200 people.Members of the Chorus tracked their progressthrough an Arts Award Bronze Level.Carousel Chorus: Gus Reubens, FranReynolds, Ewan MacAdam, Susannah Hall-First and Ben Doehren.

CAROUSEL HOUSE BAND) The Carousel House Band is LauraMcGowan (keyboards), Oliver Tatum (vocals anddrums), Elliott Duffield (saxophone) and BethanBrown Ap-Evans (keyboards). It was a very busyyear for the band, making music with schools aspart of Silver Screen, performing live at TheAttenborough Centre for Creative Arts, andcollaborating with Figurenotes creatorsResonaari of Finland. A major project was Synthesise Me! Inspired bythe work of electronic music pioneers DaphneOram and Delia Derbyshire. The band exploredsample creation and sound manipulation,making instruments from objects andaccessible technology. The project was featuredin an article in Community Living Magazine and aseries of blogs for Youth Music who supportedthe project.

INTERNATIONAL REACH) Oska Bright continues to influence attitudes tofilm festival programming and policy around theworld. This year we created a network withfestivals in Europe that are looking to increase thevisibility of and funding for disability filmproduction and presentation. Lead Programmer Matthew Hellett attended thefirst meeting of the International Accessible FilmFestivals group in Hamburg in March 2018 to planthe aims of the network. In October Becky Bruzas represented Oska Brightat a panel on women in film in Ankara, Turkey.

The international reach of Oska Brightstrengthens each year with a strong range of films entered for the 2019 Festival.

SPREADING THE WORD) To help venues and festivals diversify theirprogrammes and audiences we provide trainingand tools abut access and inclusion. Ourresources and case studies are available on theInclusive Cinema Website, managed by the BFI.Oska Bright was represented at the annualThis Way Up film exhibitors conference, withpresentations and panel discussions featuringMatthew Hellett and Sarah Watson from OskaBright.

MODERN MARVELS) This major Carousel project began life asSilver Screen, with funding from the HeritageLottery Fund in partnership with Screen ArchiveSouth East. Students from Downs Park School, DownsviewLifeskills Link College and Headstart Schoolworked with young learning disabled artists fromCarousel to re-imagine early films by some ofBrighton and Hove’s pioneer film-makers.

We ran workshops including film-making, Foleysound effects and soundtrack skills with artistsfrom Carousel’s film, music and radio teams. Thestudents also worked with the Carousel HouseBand to produce the music to their films.The University of Brighton also collaborated onthe project, offering a bursary prize to developwriting skills for learning disabled people.

Oska Bright Film Festival is the world’s biggest showcase forfilm made by and featuring people with learning disabilities,autism and Asperger’s. It takes place biennially and in nonfestival years tours the country and overseas to buildawareness, show films, network and advocate for learningdisability film. This year we launched a new website,oskabright.org, to bring all our work together and offer a one-stop shop for everything Oska Bright. The 2019 Festivalruns from 23-26 October at The Old Market.

SCREENINGS & EVENTS) This year Oska Bright held 216 screenings atvenues and festivals including the London ShortFilm Festival, Glasgow Short Film Festival, andBristol Encounters where we had a paneldiscussion with learning disabled LGBTQI film-makers about the barriers they face. We made new relationships with Bath FilmFestival and Leeds International Film Festivaland produced eight industry support events fororganisations including British Council, UKCinema Association and Mac Birmingham.

NEW PROJECT) The University of Brighton has partnered withOska Bright bringing media students togetherwith learning disabled film-makers to make newshort films for the 2019 Festival.

A big event at The Attenborough Centre forCreative Arts launched the films with theCarousel House Band playing live, and lots ofactivities for visiting schools and groups toenjoy. It was also a celebration of Carousel’swork with learning disabled artists and ArtsAwards.The films then toured to nine locations in theregion in the specially designed ModernMarvels film booth, and were screened atHove Museum. 13,372 people saw the touringexhibition which was accompanied by anillustrated map by Helen Cann showing thelocations of film studios in the 1900s.

Creative Minds is a national campaignthat gives learning disabled artists andperformers a strong, collective voice. It originated as a national conferenceplatform in 2013 and now works from anetwork of regional hubs.

DANIEL WAKEFORD) Daniel Wakeford and his band, The DanielWakeford Experience had the most busy andprogressive year of his career to date. Highlights include:• A total of 32 gigs around UK and Europe, playing to over 11,000 people• Support slots with The Go! Teamand Chain & The Gang• Record Store Day special release of Songs Of Gigsalbum produced by Republic Of Music and instore performance at Resident Records, Brighton• Independent recording at Brighton Electric Studios of second album That’s How I See It• Album launch party gig on British Airways i360in Brighton live streamed to 15,000 viewers• The music video for It’s A Wonderful City had over 191,000 views• 19 datemajor venue tour in Autumn 2018.Daniel moved to a more independent managementof his career this year, with Carousel providing keytour and online support.

Each year Carousel supports a range of artists in differentdisciplines to develop their skills and reach an audience fortheir work. Here are some of this year’s achievements.

RYAN O’DONOVAN) Alongside his work with Zombie Crash andBeat Express, Ryan O’Donovan has been buildinghis solo career at open mic spots around theregion and gigs in Brighton and Milton Keynes.

JASON EADE) Scene One Presents was a radio drama written,produced and directed by Jason Eade with script-writing mentorship by actor/writer Daniel Finlay.Jason led workshops to develop skills amongstseven participants and the end result was A MonthOf Detention, a 13 minute radio drama, performedby the cast with live Foley at Carousel’s 2018 AGM.

SARAH WATSON) Carousel’s Artists Advocates project pairsartists with people who can support or furthertheir career. Sarah Watson continued to workwith Claire Sheppeard and Figment Arts. ArtsCouncil England funded Figment Art's Level Up, aprogramme of mentoring and skills developmentthat will see Sarah exhibiting new work andleading workshops for other learning disabledartists.

MATTHEW HELLETT) In his role as Lead Programmer, Oska Bright’sMatthew Hellett wrote a series of blogs forDisability Arts Online, travelled the country talkingabout the Festival and successfully launched theCall for Submissions for this year’s Festival.

TINA DICKINSON) Tina Dickinson achieved her Gold Arts Awardin February 2019. In an interview on Arts AwardVoice Tina said “It’s a great award and good to get aqualification. I would like to help other people to dotheir Arts Award, be an adviser – be a mentor topeople like myself trying to do the awards.”

WILLIAM HANEKOM) William Hanekom continued his degreecourse at the University of Brighton and ran aworkshop with Sarah Watson there at the Intothe Arts conference in July 2018. Will is workingwith Jason Eade creating digital landscapes forStopgap and film stings for Oska Bright FilmFestival 2019.

ELEANA RE) Visual artist Eleana Re was supported byCarousel to make her first film, a commission forBBC Ideas. What Is ‘Normal?’ Who Decides? hashad 13,000 views to date. Eleana is giving theKeynote speech at Oska Bright Film Festival 2019.

SHARING OUR SKILLS) Sharing Our Skills is a programme of workthat develops artists as trainers, advocates andpublic speakers comprising Ben Doehren,Danielle Garratt, Sarah Watson, Jason Eadeand Matthew Hellett. The SOS team offertraining to venues to improve accessibility forlearning disabled people. Matthew Hellettmade a ‘walk-through’ video at the BFI to helppeople navigate a complex building.

REPRESENT GOLD) It was great year for Carousel Radio. Winning theBritish podcast Awards is a fantastic achievement forthe Carousel Radio team, Ewan MacAdam, FranReynolds, Claire Offley and Davot Irving whocommission, write, record and present the monthlyradio show and podcast. Ewan says: “It's a positive stepfor Carousel Radio. I hope that more people will listen nowand enjoy the show.”The Carousel Radio Show is a regular and popularfeature on Radio Reverb, Brighton’s communitylicensed radio station, which itself won a NationalDiversity Award for its diverse programming.

Downloads of the radio show increased 141% on theprevious year to 13,524, with one of the new Meet TheArtist episodes featuring poet Jonny Schacter getting6,500 listens. It reached 51 countries including Brazil,South Africa and Saudi Arabia. 16 learning disabledartists featured on the radio show and the team wentout and about to interview guests such as singer LizzieEmeh and rapper 2Decks. SCENE ONE PRESENTS) Our radio drama Scene One Presents made a newradio drama A Month of Detention written, produced andperformed by learning disabled talent. Led by JasonEade as script-writer and workshop leader, it involvedseven participants across 10 workshops, learning allthe necessary skills to produce radio drama.
