Annual Report 2019 Pg 2

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Girls' Brigade Singapore launched its GB90 aspirational values in 2017 and these express the conviction of our belief that if we help every GB member to be rooted in our heritage and become resilient individuals, they will blossom to be servant leaders who will Grow and Go Beyond - Extend Serve and Lead. These values need to be articulated by every member of the Girls' Brigade, as together, we can forge ahead to impact communities in Singapore and beyond. Looking back at 92 years of our Brigade history, the early years were indeed arduous and unpredictable. Building upon the strong foundations set in place by the founder of GB Singapore, Mrs Elsie Lyne and her team of pioneers, GB has grown as a youth organisation and nurtured many generations of girls to become leaders in different fields. To commemorate the rich history of the Girls’ Brigade in Singapore, a heritage gallery has been set up at the GB Centre so that all members can gain a deep understanding of the journey of the Brigade and appreciate the commitment and dedication of our pioneers to build GB into what it is today. GB continues to look ahead and stay relevant with the inclusion of digital modules in the GB curriculum. In March 2019, GB launched MakerSpace – a designated physical space at the GB Centre to support our girls’ innovative ventures. With resources such as 3D printers, embroidery machines with digital functions and work benches, a conducive environment is now available for girls to transform their creative ideas into prototypes and applications which can benefit the society at large. One special opportunity that allowed GB members to collaboratively invent, problem-solve and create digital solutions to address social issues was the Dr Low Guat Tin Challenge this year, with the theme ‘Code to Serve’. Dr Low, the former Vice- President of GB Singapore – who is known for her extensive contributions to the Brigade, remarked that it was particularly rewarding to observe how GB girls ingeniously applied their understanding of technology to solve real problems so as to improve the quality of life for others. The winning entries for this Challenge will be showcased at our GB Friendship Day (GBFD) and CommUNITY Carnival at the Singapore Science Centre on Saturday 20 July 2019. Our theme for the GB Friendship Day and CommUNITY Carnival this year is “Kindness”. In preparation for this event, GB girls will be attending an exhibition “Dialogue with Time – Embrace Ageing”, which aims to simulate real-life scenarios of challenges faced by the elderly through interactive games and guided tours hosted by elderly persons. Through this exhibition, our girls will gain a deeper sense of empathy for the elderly and learn to see them as individuals who are still capable of contributing to society. With Servant Leadership being at the core of the GB mission, it is our aspiration that our girls will reach out to others from different backgrounds, bridge gaps in society, and play a part in building an inclusive Singapore. On this note, I would like to thank School Leaders, Teachers, Officers and Volunteers for your unwavering support for the Girls’ Brigade. We deeply value the support you have provided and treasure the strong partnerships that we have built with you. Together, we will continue to provide our girls with the experiences that will help them become active and concerned citizens who will play a constructive role in society. Mrs Tay Poh Imm Brigade President

Honorary Secretary’s Report 2019 Reported by: Thio Lay Hoon, Honorary Secretary We continue to praise God for our 3,314 girls and 592 officers and teachers/church volunteers in 74 schools. We have 37 Primary and 37 Secondary school companies. 1. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019 1.1 Opening of the GB Heritage Gallery

On 30 March 2019, we were honoured to have Mrs Tay Poh Luan, International Vice Patron at the GB Centre for the official opening of the GB Heritage Gallery. The Heritage Gallery captured the history of GB Singapore in words, photos and artefacts. On that same day, the GBS MakerSpace also introduced workshops for members to make an assortment of craft and handiwork.

1.2 Awards Ceremony

The Awards Ceremony was held on 13 April at Fairfield Methodist Secondary School. We had the honour of having Mrs Tan Chen Kee, Divisional Director, Student Development Curriculum, Ministry of Education as Guest-of-Honour. Awards were given out to recognise the achievements of various GB companies in 2018. For detailed results, refer to Annex A.

Two Service Awards were given out: Ms Jenny Gan received her 35-year Service Award as a GB Officer and Mrs Tay Poh Imm received her 50-year Service Award. We thank God for their love and faithful service in the work of the Girls’ Brigade.

1.3 Dr Low Guat Tin Challenge 2019

On 1st June 2019, some 800 GB girls from Primary and Secondary schools attended the first ever digital competition organised by a Uniformed Group in Singapore. Part of the Dr Low Guat Tin Challenge 2019, “Code to Serve” showcased the hard work of 120 teams who spent over 8 months, attending coding workshops, innovating and designing digital solutions to improve the quality of life of others.

The event challenged girls to learn a completely new way of interacting with the world. The rigour of learning a new design language while using it to solve real world problems is test of discipline and team work apart from the usual physical activity associated with Uniformed Groups.

We were honoured to have Dr Chia Shi-Lu, Member of Parliament, Tanjong Pagar GRC as our Guest-of-Honour. A total of 9 Gold, 16 Silver and 37 Bronze Awards were presented to the 62 Primary teams and 4 Gold, 25 Silver and 29 Bronze Awards were presented to the 58 Secondary teams.

1.4 GB Friendship Day 2019

Our annual flagship event, The GB Friendship Day (GBFD) was held on 20 July at the Singapore Science Centre.

With a tagline of ‘Two Hands, One Heart’, The Girls’ Brigade Friendship Day (GBFD) started in 2011 with the aim of establishing a national platform for members of GBS to collectively serve special segments in the community by befriending the Lonely, Elderly, Needy and those with Special Needs (LENS). It has since been an annual national project for the organization.

In the ninth year, GBS, together with our event partners provided a CommUNITY Carnival filled with food, fun and fellowship for 1,500 LENS. Some of our partners included Science Centre Singapore, Singapore Bicentennial, Singapore Kindness Movement, Nanyang Optical, and Health Promotion Board.

This year’s FF&F Camps were held on 29 – 30 June, 27 – 28 July and 3 – 4 August. A total of 220 girls from 28 primary companies attended the two-day one-night camp away from the usual fuss from their parents and domestic helpers, and eating simple meals, such as porridge with preserved vegetables and braised peanuts.
