Annual Report 2020

1. Welcome Messages2020 was a year with much uncertainty about the future:
regarding people’s health, education and well-being. No
one could have expected how disrupting the COVID-19
pandemic would be worldwide.
We kept tabs on challenges that our partners were facing,
as every country had different restrictions. Thankfully, we
have seen that this year increased the incentive to study
and for individuals to work collectively, despite the extra
challenges. Furthermore, the appreciation for teachers
and learning increased, as the realization grew that
education should not be taken for granted. In our support,
we had to focus on the essentials: helping students to pay
their tuition fees and their traveling expenses, as Covid
restrictions made it very hard to even meet these basic
requirements.
At the Foundation we are gratified that we could
support the efforts of staff and students
worldwide to continue learning in the
classroom, online and throughout a global
pandemic. Much of which is possible due to
the loyal support of Hanze University staff,
students and partners. Wishing you a happy
and healthy 2021.
Gertjan Lankhorst – Chairman of the Board,
Hanze University Foundation
For all of us 2020 was a year full of challenges, which
we could only face with lots of creativity. Instead
of our yearly Inspiration Breakfast, we delivered
cake or breakfast baskets to the office
doorstep of our loyal sponsors. Companies
with a strict working at home policy received
vouchers for a take-away breakfast from
local bakeries. For students and staff
members we organized online pub quizzes
and provided the winners with take-away
dinner boxes filled by local restaurants.
Implementing projects also became
challenging. The creation of the Energy Centre
at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology
was postponed and the annual summer schools
of the Hanze University could not host the 6 selected
scholarship holders. Instead, we supplied ‘Back on Track
scholarships’ to pay the tuition fees of students who could not afford to
continue their studies without external support.
At the end of the year, we said farewell to Henk Pijlman, the chairman of the
executive board of the Hanze University. He has been one of the biggest
supporters of the Hanze University Foundation. From the start of the
Foundation until his farewell party, he talked positively about it and assisted
with fundraising activities. Thank you so much Henk for being loyal to us all
these years and we wish you all the best in your well-deserved retirement!
We will continue the work of the Hanze University Foundation with our
dedicated team and look forward to implementing many projects in 2021.

ObjectivesThe objectives of the Hanze University Foundation are:
a. To promote sustainable vocational education in
developing countries.
b. Maintain a scholarship scheme for students from
developing countries.
c. Encourage social engagement within and beyond
Hanze UAS.
Target groupsThe Foundation focuses on a number of groups in the
Netherlands and abroad:
a. Vocational institutions and programs in developing
countries that want to start, improve and/or expand
their education.
b. Young people from developing countries who can
create a better future for themselves and their
surroundings through education.
c. Students, staff and alumni of Hanze UAS who desire
to contribute to development cooperation.
d. Companies in the northern Netherlands that want to
demonstrate their social responsibility.
Focus countries and themesCountries: In 2020, the Hanze University Foundation supported partners in Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa financially.
We also kept tabs and supported other partners in Ghana, Indonesia and Uganda on-distance. In general, we support four
educational areas that are major contributors to sustainable development:
• Energy: a key driver for sustainable growth. We are passionate about bringing energy subjects to the classrooms, and
to the campuses.
• Entrepreneurship: entrepreneurs and SMEs kindle economic growth and create jobs, which is why we support
entrepreneurial programs at several educational institutes.
• Healthcare: we support the staff and students at rural healthcare training colleges that at their turn serve their
neighboring communities.
• ICT: we equip schools with ICT infrastructure and internet access, so students and staff members get access to all the
information worldwide available in their particular discipline.
2. About Us
ANBI StatusSince the start of the Foundation
in 2009 we are in the possession
of the ANBI status. This status
guarantees that the Tax Authorities
recognize us as the Public Benefit
Organization (ANBI). This offers tax
benefits for both donors and the
Foundation.

The Foundation is the driving force behind a multitude of higher
education projects organized by Hanze UAS in developing countries.
3. Our Organization
The Foundation has three governing bodies: the Board, the Committee of Recommendation and the
Review Committee. A Director and Project and Communications Manager have been appointed to
oversee the day-to-day management of the Foundation.
• The Board appoints the staff and oversees (annual) plans, annual reports and proposals.
The Board consists of Bix Jacobse, Bert Kunst, Els van den Berg, Gertjan Lankhorst (chairman),
Paul van der Wijk and Petra Smeets.
• The Review Committee evaluates project proposals and provides a recommendation regarding
the administration of the funds. The committee consists of Jacqueline Bos, Hanneke Brakenhoff,
Elanna Veldkamp and Paul Wabike (who will soon be substituted by Jacques Hartog).
• The Committee of Recommendation consists of René Paas and Gerard Kremer to connect
businesses to the Foundation and support fundraising activities.
• The Director, Linda Maat, and the Project and Communications Managers, Elanna
Veldkamp and Alida de Winter, are responsible for the day-to-day activities,
project management and organization of fundraisers. They prepare
the board meetings and are responsible for the management of the
financial resources.

In 2020, planning became a challenge – particularly international plans. Ongoing projects
were delayed and some events: such as summer schools and staff trips were cancelled
or postponed. The Foundation responded with additional funding for those who needed it
most, as well as extending grant periods to overcome unforeseen events causing delays.
4. Projects with partners in 2020
DIT Energy CentreDar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) received a
grant for a Renewable Energy Centre in Tanzania. Inspired
about what they have seen at EnTranCe at Hanze UAS, they
would like to boost the energy transition in Tanzania. As
one of the best technical institutions in Tanzania, they will
be able to provide practical training for their students and
other technical institutions. The expertise center will bring
knowledge and skills in the area of (sustainable) energy
together and make it available for students, staff members
and external partners.
The establishment of the DIT Energy Center is an effort
towards raising awareness about issues of energy
sustainability in the country supported by a fiscal place
where energy technology can be developed, tested and
shared.
The grant will contribute to rehabilitation and alteration
of an existing area to transform it into an Energy Center.
Furthermore, it will cover the procurement of fixed furniture
and fittings in the center.
Unfortunately, the building plans were delayed due to
corona. At the time of writing, progress is underway. Please
check our website and the next annual report for updates.
Assigned: € 31 024
Actual expenses: € 15 512
Explanation: The total amount will be transferred in two
equal batches: one at the start of the project, and one after
the first progress report.
Back on Track scholarshipsThe Hanze University Foundation
organized fundraisers to support
partner institutions to deal with
the economic consequences of
the corona pandemic. For many
students in developing countries it
was not a given to return back to
school. Not because of a lockdown
or health reasons, but because
of the economic consequences
of the corona measures. During
the lockdown the reserved funds
for tuition fee has been spent to
support basic needs of family
members and there was little to no
money left to return back to school.
To support our partner education
institutions, their staff members and
students, the Foundation offered
Back on Track scholarships. Two
partners received Back on Track
funding: the North Coast Medical
Training College in Kenya (NCMTC)
and TSiBA Business School in
South Africa.
15 Scholarships for Healthcare students NCMTC selected 15 students for a scholarship who were
most deserving due to their general vulnerable position
and which was even weakened more due to the effects
of COVID-19. The core issue was that so many parents of
medical students lost their source of income and were no
longer able to pay tuition fees. In order to assist, all staff of
the college agreed from April 2020 with a reduction to 70% of
their normal salary and some even less.
One main criteria was to select students who are in an
advanced stage of their studies so that they won’t delay to
finish and join the healthcare workforce.
Indirectly, the college as a whole will benefit as assisting
these students will help the college to recover school fees
and pays for the running costs to allow teaching and learning
activities to continue.
The fifteen students are:

Data allowance for online learning at TSiBATSIBA Business School is an accredited higher education institution offering
undergraduate and postgraduate business qualifications in South Africa.
Since South Africa was put into a full lockdown on March 23, 2020, all face-to-
face activity at tertiary institutions came to a stop. Even with lockdown levels
relaxing, higher education institutions were not able to fully return to pre-
Covid-19 levels.
By providing each student a monthly allowance of data, they were able to
attend digital classes, participate in interactive Zoom sessions (classes,
breakaways and tutorials), do online research in the absence of a physical
library, and complete and hand in digital assignments. As many as 70% of
TSIBA’s students study on a full-tuition scholarship, and in the past, this did not
include mobile data costs. This added cost burden is outside the means of the
average student, and without TSIBA’s intervention, they would not be able to
see continued engagement in learning and exams.
The amount was able to fully subsidize the data expenditure for the second
semester for the Bachelor of Business Administration students.

We are so pleased with the passionate involvement of our supporters!
In 2020 we were able to count on so many individuals and companies
during all sorts of activities.
5. Involvement of Supporters
Christmas Donations from 2020Every year, Hanze UAS staff receive a gift card at Christmas
to pick out a present of their choice. They are also able to
donate the amount entirely, or in part, to the Hanze University
Foundation. In 2020, 745 staff members donated to the
Foundation bringing the total donation to € 18 750.
Virtual Inspiration Breakfast - Cake Delivery Due to the covid-19 restrictions, the annual Inspiration Breakfast couldn’t take
place in its regular form. Nonetheless, Bytesnet, City Eden Hotel, GasTerra,
Gasunie, GN-IX, Rabobank, Urus and the Hanzehogeschool Groningen donated
to the Back on Track Scholarships of the Foundation to enable students in
developing countries to continue their studies online or once campuses have
reopened. These local companies received an alternative ‘breakfast’ in return
for their donations. For some that meant a breakfast basket delivery, for others
that meant special cake delivered to the office doorstep. In total, the Virtual
Inspiration Breakfast raised € 9905.
Staff trip to Kenya
In October 2020 a staff trip to North Coast Medical Training College was
planned. Unfortunately, this trip has been postponed until further notice.
However, staff members were still active with fundraising for the trip, raising
€ 5863 for the College.

Henk Pijlman's FarewellHenk Pijlman started working for Hanze UAS in 2000 as a
member of the Executive Board. In 2004 he was appointed
Chairman of the Executive Board. Henk Pijlman was and
is a strong supporter of the Hanze University Foundation.
Therefore, as a parting gift when he retired, he requested
donations to the Foundation. In total, this raised € 7522 in
2020.
Earmarked donations
The Hanze University Foundation is regularly approached
with the question of whether one can make a donation
through the Foundation to a specific project supported by
the Foundation. In 2020, a total of € 5000 was donated
to the Community Health Promotion Fund
(CHPF, Kenya) through the Foundation.
Due to the fact that the
Foundation has a long-term
relationship with NCMTC,
earmarked donations will
remain welcome in the
future.
Subscribed Hanze donors and Foundation supportersDedicated Hanze staff donate various amounts
on a monthly basis via their monthly salary.
Their donations totaled € 2784.
Furthermore, the Hanze University Foundation
organized online pub quizzes in 2020 – one
to coincide with the Breakfast and one in
December. The theme of the first quiz was Travel
and the theme of the second quiz was everything
Hanze. Each quiz consisted of 9 rounds with
10 questions about various topics. The winners
received coupons for local restaurants (1st prize
€50, 2nd prize €25,
3rd prize €10). The coupons were sponsored by
the Hanze University of Applied Sciences. For
the first quiz, a coupon for an overnight stay for
2 people was sponsored by City Eden Hotel,
which was added to the first prize. The quiz was
hosted by Crowdpurr, quizzing software, which
the Foundation was able to use for a reduced fee
due to its NGO status. The annual Hanze book
market was also dedicated to the Foundation,
raising €3002.
A total of €6702 was raised through the monthly
donations, the book market, the pub quizzes
as well as one-time donations from generous
individuals and organisations.

Financial SummaryThe eleventh year of the Foundation
was a good year financially,
given the limitations imposed by
COVID-19. In total, €53.695 was
raised through fundraising amongst
local businesses and employees
from Hanze UAS. Furthermore,
Hanze staff raised €5863 for the trip
to Kenya that was postponed until
further notice.
The amount of €52.117 went towards
projects approved by the review
committee and the board. This
includes the second instalment of
€15.512 to DIT.
Personnel costs, office costs and
publicity costs of the Foundation
are covered by Hanze UAS and
therefore do not appear in the
budget. This means that aside from
the required bank costs (€230),
100% of all donations directly
benefited the projects.
