01 PRESIDENT’S LETTERDr. Martí Manyalich

President of TPM-DTI [email protected]

The current mission of TPM-DTI Foundation is

to save lives all around the world through organ

transplantation. Just 10% of the needs regard-

ing organ donation are covered, while those not

covered are over a million cases per year. The

two hands on the cover offering a warm and

alive heart portray our mission.

We have made efforts to transmit the knowledge

and good practices to improve the quality and

number of donations all around the world. As

such, we have brought to our Barcelona head-

quarters more than 30 professionals on organ

and tissue donation, as well as transplant ex-

perts from around the world to develop their

skills, and they have returned to their countries

fully energized and with new ideas to develop

the TPM organ donation programs.

Some of our experts have had the opportunity to

travel to Latin America, like Trinidad and Toba-

go, Ecuador, Colombia, Cuba, etc.; to European

countries such as Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Slove-

nia, Hungary and Moldova; to African regions

such as Egypt, Libya and Morocco; to Middle

East and Asian Countries, such as Kuwait, Iran

and China (which has been highly represented

through the trips done to Hangzhou, Kunming,

Nanning, Pekin…). We have had the opportu-

nity to share experiences and professionalism

through those trips as well as learn from differ-

ent cultures and countries where organ dona-

tion programs are growing.

The TPM staff, professionals and experts are

united in its shared passion of helping to save

lives through organ and tissue donation, and we

are grateful to see the enthusiasm and commit-

ment of all our friends, concerned about organ

donation around the world. To conclude this

letter, we would like to show gratitude to the in-

stitutions, people involved and organizations that

help us make our work possible. We will together

keep moving forward in collaboration.

‘JUST 10% OF THE WORLD NEEDS ARE COVERED, WHILE THOSE NOT COVERED ARE OVER A

02 WHAT HAVE WE DONE?

During 2014 TPM-DTI carried out the implementation of fifteen face to face courses, as well as blended and online courses that

are part of the curriculum of the International Master in Donation of Organs, Tissues and Cells for Transplantation. This year,

as a new element, we implemented the first edition of the self-training online course on Operational Management in Organ

Donation and Transplantation. Besides that, two new delegations in Italy and Croatia have been established. Those two coun-

tries are characterized by a long experience related to organ donation and have strongly consolidated donation systems as well as

a long track record on training.

The combined program in training and diagnostics had continued in Colombia for the third consecutive year and is being estab-

lished in China for the first time. For the online training modality, an online platform has been created, which has brought better

facilities and abilities to the learning procedure.

Regarding International Cooperation projects, TPD-DTI foundation keeps implementing the basis of a national donation system

in Trinidad & Tobago.

04 EUROPEAN PROJECTS

04.1 EMPODaTEMPODaT (European Mediterranean Postgrad-uate Program in Organ Donation and Transplan-tation) is a European program witin the TEMPUS project coordinated by the University of Barcelona and financed by the European Commission on the Educational, Audiovisual and Cultural Field (EA-CEA). Its main objective is to develop and imple-ment a Postgraduate Program of Organ Donation and Transplantation in accordance with the Euro-pean Area of Higher Education within 6 different Universities from Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon (ENPI countries – European Neighborhood Pol-icy Partnership Instrument). The program is de-veloped with 4 different European universities in Sweden, Germany, France and Spain and uses the blended educational methodology that provides a common framework to the 90 professionals to whom it is addressed. The training is given in the language of the beneficiary country, usually in English or French, which creates the basis for a Eu-ropean-Mediterranean training model of special-ists in organ donation and transplantation.

Within our collaboration framework in the Twinning Project with Moldova and the Agence de la Biomedicine and OCATT, a diagnosis study to evaluate the training needs in organ donation, transplan-tation and tissue banking in Moldova has been developed. We have carried out an educational plan for the coordination of the face to face courses and online courses addressed to health professionals in the country.

IRODAT. INTERNATIONAL REGISTRY IN ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATIONIRODaT is a date base that facilitates information of activities per countries regarding donation and trans-plantation. IRODaT’s objective is to help health pro-fessionals, researchers and the general audience to have access to validated and certified information. Last November, IRODaT published a bulletin with the reported numbers per 71 countries concerning organ donation and transplantation in 2013. The numbers regarding to 2014 will be published in due course. More info: www.irodat.com.

BLACK SEA AREA PROJECTThe Black Sea Project is coordinated by the European Council and its main objective is promoting the or-gan donation and transplant activity within those 9 countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldavia, Rumania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. In this project, both DTI and ONT are responsible for the Working Package 4 centralized on the study of clinical practices in Organ Donation and Trans-plantation in Turkey, Russia and Rumania. The last evaluation visit was in 2014 where an expert group from DTI proceeded to compare the situation within the three hospitals evaluated in 2013 with the aim of formulating recommendations to the Health Minis-try, the National Agency of Transplantation and those hospitals that wanted to improve its activity.

SOCIAL COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BARCELONA AND BOSCH I GIMPERA FOUNDATION AWARDSThe Secondary Award Antoni Caparrós to the best technology and knowledge transfer project was given to Dr. Martí Manyalich Vidal for the project “Cascade training in organ and tissue donation and transplantation” from DTI Foundation.

3rd EDITION OF THE TRANSPLANT COORDINATION MANUAL

VISIT FROM THE INDIAN MINISTRY OF HEALTH

The Indian minister of health, Dr Harsh Vardhan, and his delegation visited the DTI offices in order to get to know the good practices in Spain towards the do-nation and transplantation field. The minister showed a great interest on DTI’s international work and pro-jects as well as the results obtained on the latest years.

The 3rd Edition of the Transplant Coordination Man-ual was edited in 2014 and now is available in either printed or digital form. 63 international experts collaborated on this Edition. The Manual has a high educational value because it constitutes the vast edu-cational sources for the TPM courses.

PUBLICATIONSThe Impact of TPM training on Organ Donation and Transplantation. The specialized organ donation and transplantation training (D&T) is relevant to improve transplants. The main objective of this study was to investigate on the participants’ perceived benefits regarding TPM courses concerning the development of profession-al skills. For this study, it was elaborated a survey within 5 lan-guages (Spanish, English, Italian, French and Portu-guese) and it was approved by the University of Barce-lona (Spain) and the University of Purdue (USA). The link was sent by post to 6839 individuals and we asked them to send it to other active professionals related to the field. It was shared on Facebook and in congress-es as well. Two research questions were identified re-garding the perceived influence from the specialized training programs. The article of the study have been accepted for publication on Experimental and Clini-cal Transplantation.

DTI Foundation has been invited to the 14th European Committee (Par-tial Agreement) on Organ Transplan-tation (CD-P-TO) meeting in order to present its activity results within the BSA project. The meeting took place in Rome within the scope of Pope Francisco’s Audience and the activities related to the XVI edition of the European Day for Organ Donation.
