Every child has the right to an adventure. Life is about grabbing opportunities. The prizes don’t always go to the biggest, the best and the strongest – they go to those who persevere. These are simple life lessons that Scouting teaches.

1ST STANMORE SCOUT GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013

PREVIOUS AGM MINUTES. 13 JULY 2012.

1 – Opening Address

Following the procession of the flags, the AGM was opened by Group Scout Leader, Eddy Morris. Eddy

said the group had had a good year, but that with more helpers and uniformed leaders etc, we could

do even more. He stated he was very impressed with all the sections and was happy to report an

increase in numbers – both children and uniformed leaders. Eddy asked that Holly Redpath and

Sophia Curtis, who were both in hospital, and their families were in the group’s thoughts.

2 – Apologies for absence

Barry and Natalie Mitchell. Barry and Natalie sent a message with their apologies (three children and

living in Northampton made attending difficult). They wished the group a successful AGM and said

they were looking forward to seeing all those attending the Butchers Coppice Group Summer Camp.

3 – Minutes from the last AGM 16.09.2011

Anton Ganesan proposed the minutes which were agreed by the floor.

4 – Accounts

Prior to the accounts, Eddy said how lucky the group was to have such an outstanding treasurer, and

thanked Caetano for all his hard work. He also thanked Rob for his efficiency and continued work as

the auditor. Caetano extended his thanks to Danny Jackson for all his efforts in maintaining accurate

records of monies received.

Caetano said he would be able to discuss the accounts with anyone who wanted to after the meeting,

and explained that signed copies were available should anyone wish to view them (accounts were

left unsigned in the AGM pack to avoid fraud).

Eddy said that subs would remain at £15 per month, with the special discount deals still in place for

paying for 5 or 9 months in advance. From September 2012 parents and guardians will have the

option of making payments by debit/ credit card.

The accounts were proposed by Becky Tobin and agreed by the floor.

5 – Section Leader Reports

Kobus thanked the trustees and executive members for all their great input, and thanked Tim Goodger

for all the legal work he does. Building on the strength of the past and the leaders involved presently,

Kobus said he was sure that looking forward will see 1st Stanmore Scout Group grow in size and

strength, benefiting our children and community tremendously.

10 – Any Other Business

Eddy said that 1st Stanmore is the biggest group in Stanmore and in the county. Running such a large

group is not easy, and he couldn’t do it without his wonderful assistants. He gave particular thanks to

Peter Inwards, Ian McCreeth and Anton Ganesan.

He reminded parents that all the leaders give their time voluntarily and that we are always looking for

more parents to help, and for more uniformed leaders. All training and CRB checks are free to

volunteers, and whilst we would like to establish a Tuesday Beaver Colony, more leaders and help would

be needed. From September, there will be a parent’s rota put in place to help with the Beaver colonies.

Torbay Group Summer Camp has had to be cancelled as only 6 children had signed up, but following a

change of plan, 60 members will be going to Butchers Coppice Scout Campsite (in Bournemouth) next

weekend for a week long camp. There will be a Docklands Water Activity Weekend in September 2013,

and next year’s Group Summer Camp will be in Jersey.

Parents were reminded of the importance of making sure their children’s record cards were kept up to

date with ALL information filled in. Several have been missing vital information. From September, no

one will be invested unless their forms are fully completed.

Peter Inwards thanked Eddy, on behalf of all the leaders, for all the time and effort he puts into the

group.

Following the procession of the flags, the meeting was closed at 20.35 and was followed by a BBQ.

1ST STANMORE SCOUT GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT. EVERYDAY ADVENTURE.

2013 sees 1st Stanmore Scout Group enter its 19th year serving the young people of Stanmore and I’m pleased to report that we are continuing in the pattern of growth established over recent years. The group membership has reached a level that means that we are the 43rd largest group in the UK, out of 7293, and 5th in Greater London out of 661. We are also currently the largest group in the District, and even the county – all statistics to be proud of!

Membership

At the last AGM in 2012, I had great pleasure in reporting that our members, including leaders exceeded 150 people. Since then, our numbers have grown to a remarkable 192.

The numbers of members in each Section:

Beaver Scouts (aged 6 to 8): 43

Cub Scouts (aged 8 to 10½): 54 Scouts (aged 10½ to 14): 55

Young Leaders (aged 14 to 18): 10

Adult Leaders and Helpers: 30

Management

The management team have worked tirelessly during the year, but we are continuously making changes where these add value, any suggestions are always appreciated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Trustees, Eddy, Anton and the rest of the leadership team who all add tremendous value. It is always risky to name names for fear of forgetting some, but if I may, I’d especially like to thank Matthew and Liam for all their non-stop work.

Camps and activities

The past year has been full of activities and has included camps at Thriftwood, Butchers Coppice, a trip to Whipsnade Zoo for Beavers and Cubs, Beaver sleepovers, an ice skating trip and the Scouts Gloucestershire Survival camp to name but a few.

As for 2013, we’ve already had some camps and are looking forward to many more. As usual, our Adult Leaders and Young Leaders are providing a positive contribution. In addition, please allow me to thank the parents; apart from making sure your children are in uniform and on time to section meetings and camps, many are going the extra mile. This is most evident at camps where some parents not only make themselves available to attend, but help greatly in the kitchen, supporting the leaders and also contributing great ideas and being parents to more than just their own. On behalf of the whole group, thank you.

We look forward to the future, especially as we enter our 20th year in 2014, and with numbers increasing as they are, 1st Stanmore is proving that it is a Scout Group above most.

We are proud to be here.

Yours, in Scouting,

Kobus Kobus Huisamen Chairman

BEAVER LEADER’S

REPORT. THURSDAY COLONY.

Are we sure that it has been a year since the last AGM? The Beavers have had a hectic year with lots of activities, including trips to the Zoo, and sleepovers at Thriftwood and the Group Headquarters! The year started with a very successful Beaver Sleepover at Thriftwood in May 2012. They came for a sleepover on Saturday morning and left on Sunday after lunch and all had a wonderful time. In June 2012 they went on a day trip to the Whipsnade Zoo and they really enjoyed the day. I would like to thank Liam for organising this. Our numbers have increased and we have over 20 Beaver Scouts in our colony and there has always been a very good turnout at our weekly meetings, where we have had varied activities. It is encouraging to see a good number of our Beaver Scouts moving up into the Cub Scout Sections and continuing in Scouting. The Beavers have been working on many Activity badges and many have gained the Adventure, Explorer, Healthy Eating and the Health & Fitness Badges. If parents want to know about these badges, they could be found on our website: 1ststanmore.co.uk/beaverbadges Stevie Harris and Maahi Shah are now working on their Chief Scout’s Bronze Award and I hope they will be able to finish it before the AGM. We like to congratulate Ishaan Mehta and Jay Wong who were joint holders of the ‘Beaver Scout of the Year’ Award for 2011-12. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Anton, Danny, Neil, Sebastian and Uzayr for all their help at our weekly meetings. I would also like to mention and thank Scott McCreeth for all his help at the weekly meetings and Robin and Dominic Goodger who started helping us this year. We are in need of a Beaver Scout Leader and Assistant Beaver Scout Leader(s) and would be happy to speak to anyone interested in helping out. Yours, in Scouting,

Eddy Eddy Morris Beaver Scout Leader (Acting) Group Scout Leader

BEAVER LEADER’S

REPORT. FRIDAY COLONY.

Friday Beavers have had another eventful year with the hard-working and dedicated leadership team and has endeavoured to continue to provide as fulfilling and exciting a programme as possible for all the Beavers. So, here we are, at the end of another successful year for the Friday Night Beaver Colony! As the newly appointed Beaver Scout leader of Friday, it’s been sad to see so many move on to Cubs. In particular, recognising Scouts who were some of my original Beavers in 2010, when I first started helping out makes me feel old for an 18 year old! (Not naming names, Ashley Ingham!). As a relatively young leadership unit at Friday night, we feel we can really connect with the young beavers who look to us like role models but still give us the respect we expect, and with over 20 on a regular basis, this is important. With Holly Redpath turning 18 soon, and Steven Day having just joined the adult life, by the start of next year there will be more than enough leaders to support the weekly meetings to ensure they continue being of great fun and educational to the beavers. The Friday Beavers have been extremely busy this year, gaining loads of badges, attending the Beaver Sleepover and getting ready for exciting trips like London Zoo at the end of June and Legoland and Museum trips planned for summer and later in 2013. With a strong turnout weekly on a Friday, help from Holly Redpath, Steven Day, Warren McCreeth and Andy Curtis has all been greatly valued, and with the increasing arts and crafts, decorating, making and so on, we are incorporating into our colony meetings even more so – thank you all! Badges we are currently working on are the Healthy Eating Badge, and Global Challenge Badge, for more information, or a letter with tasks beavers need to do at home talk to me or Holly. We encourage the Beavers to do badges at home, with weekly show and tell as well, and we are trying to incorporate some more use from show and tell- linking to badges available. Parents can go to 1ststanmore.co.uk/beaverbadges or google ‘Beaver Badges and requirements’. As you can imagine, with all the activities going on regularly choosing a Beaver of the year was very difficult, but we have come to a decision. The 2012-2013 Friday Colony Beaver Scout of the year is… Yours, in Scouting,

Sally Sally Bradley Beaver Scout Leader

CUB LEADER’S REPORT. TIGER PACK.

The last year has been full of fun, adventure and friendship for the Monday Cub Pack. We have delivered an exciting programme with lots of activities, camps and badges, preparing our cubs for the challenge and adventure of Scouts. This year we have had an entertaining programme with a lot of badge work and learning new skills, our numbers have fluctuated a bit as we have had a number of older Cubs going up to Scouts, We have a very good pack of hard working Cubs with a sense of humour and a good outlook on life. I would like to mention Amy Pereira (Senior Sixer) who worked hard to gain her Chief Scout’s Silver Award – Well Done! We have also given names to our Cub Packs this year, and Monday night will be called TIGER CUB PACK. As usual we have had a busy year with visits to the Stanmore fire station and the Baptist Chapel in Marsh Lane. The Cubs found them very interesting and good fun; we all loved trying out the fire hose! The fun and wet continued with the Thriftwood camp. Although it was wet and muddy, spirits were high and I think, for some Cubs, the mud was an added bonus. The Butchers Coppice camp in the summer was very good and the weather was very kind to us. It was a lot of hard work for all, but we survived. We also took part in the district swimming gala and the five a side football competition, both were very exciting for the Cubs and Leaders and a good time was had by all, even if we didn’t quite get to the top. My thanks go to Carol Green, Ashley Martin and Craig McCreeth without whom we would not be able to run the Pack. My thanks also go to Anton Ganesan, Dave Gregson and Ramesh Dave who we work closely with to develop the programme for both packs. I am looking forward to another action-packed year, with the cubs enjoying new experiences, activities and adventures and hopefully gaining even more badges and awards. The 2012-2013 Monday Pack Cub Scout of the year is… Yours, in Scouting,

Derek Derek Green Cub Scout Leader (Akela)

1ST STANMORE SCOUT GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013

CUB LEADER’S REPORT. WOLF PACK. It’s been another action packed year for Wednesday Cubs. This year we decided to give names to our two packs and Wednesday night will be called WOLF CUB PACK. Even though we did not use this name often but we intend to use it in coming years. We had a very successful camp at Thriftwood in May 2012 along with the Scout Troops, and also the Beaver Scouts who joined in for a sleepover during the weekend. The Cub Scouts took part in various activities and gained the Outdoor Challenge and Outdoor Plus Challenge badges. As camping is a major Scouting activity we would like more youngsters to attend and parents to encourage them. A Big Thank you to Dave for coordinating all the activities. (Dates for next year’s camp at Thriftwood are 2nd May to 5th May 2014).

It is very encouraging to see a good number of Beaver Scouts progressing to become Cub Scouts in the two packs and we do regularly progress our Cub Scouts into our two troops. A good number of our members had progressed through the different sections and have become Leaders and a few are still waiting in the wings to become Leaders. We have about 30 Cub Scouts in our pack and they do attend the meetings regularly.

Our Senior Sixers, Ashley Ingham and Deena Amin, who have since moved to scouts, and our present Senior Sixers: Arya Gudka, Devina Patel, Emma Inwards, Joseph Lucas, Joseph Watts and Kieran Patel, have been working on Challenge Badges and have successfully gained the Chief Scout’s Silver Award. Rohan Patel and Gunther Huisamen are also working very hard to gain the Chief Scout’s Silver Award and they hope to finish it before the AGM.

Aarav Parbhoo who moved up from our Friday Beaver Colony is working to gain the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award and he hopes to finish it before the AGM.

We like the parents to help us by encouraging the Cub Scouts to do some badges at home like Home Help, Book Reader, Hobbies and Collector Activity badges, for details please visit our website 1ststanmore.co.uk/cubsbadges.

I would like to congratulate Joseph Lucas and Ashley Ingham who were joint holders of the ‘Cub Scout of the Year’ for 2011-12.

We had a good summer Camp in July 2012 in Butchers Coppice Scout Camp at Bournemouth and 9 of our Cubs attended and had a good time. The section took part in various District events and were champions in the 5-a-side football completion in April 2012 and came 3rd in March 2013. A number of our Cub Scouts went on the Ice Hockey evening in March 2013 and had a wonderful time. Thank you to Peter Inwards and Mathew Inwards for organising it for the whole group. We visited Stanmore Chapel in November 2012 and would like to thank Sam and Ian who helped to organise it and the pastor Rev Colin Leyshon for giving us the opportunity to visit the chapel.

I would like to thank David Gregson and Ramesh Dave for all the help and support in running the section and a special thank you to Jean Gregson for all her help. I would also like to thank Liam Mendes for all his help and would like to welcome him as a leader when he becomes one in April 2013. A thank you to Ellie Goodger, Charlie Goodger and Ryan Tobin, our Young Leaders, for all their help and the parents for their continuous support and Mrs Price for encouraging other parents to send their children to 1st Stanmore.

Thanks also to Derek and Carol Green, the Monday Cub Leaders, for all their help and support. A big thank you to our GSL Eddy Morris for all his support and encouragement and for always being there when needed. My thanks also go to all the Leaders who have been working as a team for the betterment of Scouting.

SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT. THURSDAY TROOP.

Here we are again! Another twelve months of quality Scouting have been and gone with more memories for everyone to look back on. We believe we offer a superb balanced programme for our Scouts across the year, giving them experiences they wouldn’t get a chance to take part in anywhere else. Thursday Night Scouts have this year been more broadly focussed as opposed to spending terms working entirely on the ‘Challenge’ badges. They have been tasked with achieving some of the proficiency badges, self-motivating to work toward and gain their awards, which has resulted in a significant increase in the number of badges handed out week on week. Despite this we also continue to see a few Challenge badges completed, also under the Scouts’ own steam. We have one completed set for Alan Pereira, gaining his Chief Scout’s Gold award, the highest available to a Scout age young person. As well as self-delivered achievements, we continue to push the Thursday Scouts with the traditional skills such as first aid, knotting & pioneering, camp craft, cooking, fire lighting, knife work and navigation. These skills help to develop scouts so they have the confidence to go on and try more challenging and adventurous activities including at the very popular Thriftwood camp where they are responsible for their own cooking, cleaning and accommodation as part of an active programme. The older and more experienced scouts annually join up with our Gloucester brethren where they embark on a two weekend ‘Expedition Challenge’ course and later in their development will take on the very demanding ‘Survival & Bushcraft’ courses. Offsite activities are a very important part of our programme too. Aside from the two main camps that the group runs, ice skating, fireworks and the annual trip to Hamleys were all very popular and well received events. This year a group of Scouts are planning to take on a Patrol Camp which is managed and run with limited Adult supervision. The average attendance remains high, with 25 plus Scouts attending most evenings from a pool of more than 30. Once again we only have a small number of Scouts heading up to Explorers this year, with the core group still relatively young. We have had a great influx from cubs as well as several joiners who are new to scouting which is great to see. We continue to encourage participation in the District sporting events, including the Swimming and the Top Golf Watson Shield competition, which was won by 1st Stanmore for the second year in succession. Unfortunately we were unable to put together a team for the 5 a side football tournament, with the District decision to schedule it on Mother’s day especially problematic. Yours, in Scouting,

Stephen Stephen Brenton Scout Leader

SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT. FRIDAY TROOP.

The past twelve months have been yet another incredible Scouting year! With a total of over 150 nights away between all the Scouts out of all the residential experiences (camps), as well as more adventurous activities than ever, the troop continues to go from strength to strength! Friday Night Scouts have had a mixed year in the past 12 months. We lost a large number of our older scouts up to explorers throughout the year, but also gained a lot of new scouts from outside the association, who have settled in well. Thriftwood camp in May was a great success again this year, with the scouts cooking for themselves for most of the meals, on both gas stoves and open fires. They also did well at building their own rafts, using some of the lashings they learn at a regular meeting nights. Summer Camp at Butcher’s Coppice near Bournemouth was another success with feedback from all the scouts being positive. There, the scouts had a hike from the water’s edge over to near Corfe Castle, racing the other team who did the reverse journey. We are hoping to get out on camps and out on other activities more over the coming 12 months to really bolster the programme we put on, and to let the scouts get the most out of their time in scouting. During our normal weekly meetings, we have had a highly varied programme over the last year, with scouting basics being our main focus. Over the past year, we have looked at different parts of scout skills, such as orienteering basics, pioneering basics, and looked at some of the philosophy that scouting is based around. To do these, we have looked at a few of the activity badges that help along these skills, such as the guide (or local knowledge) badge, and an evening sedan chair race, which got the scouts tying the lashings to hold the chairs together and racing around a course. The nights that we have gone out of the headquarters have been great evenings again, with the fireworks night at pear wood last autumn, the Hamleys trip at Christmas which always goes down well. Going forward we will be looking to get out of the scout headquarters more regularly now we have a larger troop again. Each week, we have between 15 and 25 scouts show up on a Friday, with new scouts coming in all the time, and the older ones moving on to join the explorer unit. Each week I am supported by three other leaders, Jeremy, Rohit and Kasun. A big thank you must go out to them for their hard work and effort they put in each week. They are a great support to myself, and to the scout troop. I must also thank the people who do all the admin for the group, and the organisation behind many of the camps, so thank you to all who are involved. Yours, in Scouting,

Jonathan Jonathan Gregson Scout Leader
