3.2 The President presented the Annual Report, asked the meeting if there were any questions to any Directors.
3.3 Financial Report – Director of Finance and Administration spoke to the Finance Report to explain to members
why the report must be at a higher level of reporting.
Season 2016/17 saw another tight year with strong financial control and the club functioned well.
We saw a profit of $3,305 compared to a deficit the previous season which meant we improved our position.
Norm explained financials in quite some detail.
The important thing is that the 30th April 2017 the club had a cash flow position of $247k and this is a good
position to be in because the concern is that grants and sponsorship can stop at any stage and the club needs
to be cautious with money for financial sustainability.
Future considerations are:
Vehicle – coming into the final year of a grant and need to decide on whether to replace the vehicle.
City of Stirling could potentially reduce grant if there is an increase of paid lifeguards.
Repairs and Maintenance – need to consider painting the facility and review storage.
Lifesaving equipment needs to be reviewed and a replacement plan put into place, including IRB hulls and
motors.
Asked for questions from the floor
Brian Carthew wished to compliment the Board of Directors on a healthy set of Financials especially to Norm
and Jackie.
The President commented that is was great to have the club in this position as many clubs along the coast
are not.
ITEM 4 Auditor’s Report
8 | P a g e
4.1 The auditor’s report, was included in the Annual Report, was noted by the Members.
Norm Waldeck introduced our new Auditor, Michael Cooper from Optima Audit to the meeting.
The Auditor was pleased to report that auditing went well and that the club had good processes in place.
The Incorporation Act had changed – WA has caught up with everyone else and that there was a new way
to present the financials.
Due to these changes the financials needed to report Depreciation differently. The building renovations had
never been depreciated and so will show in the current financials. Buildings depreciate at a much larger rate
that equipment.
ITEM 5 Election of Office Bearers
5.1 All positions were declared vacant.
Shane then read the list of nominations received by the close of nominations
All valid nominations for office bearers
having no more than one candidate, all
were elected unopposed.

5.3 President Shane Bowbridge advised those present that there were quite a few roles not filled and any further
nominations will be appointed by the Board of Directors.
5.4 Shane thanked all Club Officers for their hard work throughout the clubs very successful season.
The club completed 116 rescues which was a third of the WA state total, a fantastic effort by the Lifesaving
and Education areas with training our members.
The Financial position of the club a lot stronger than previous years
Competition – can’t do much ore with the fantastic results
It has been a big team effort.
Shane thanked the Board for their support throughout the year, they all worked with one goal to make the
club better.

President
Once again Trigg Island SLSC has had a season to be proud of, with many outstanding achievements. We performed with distinction and proved that we are one of the most successful Clubs in Australia. Administration Increase in membership of 14% Financially stable with no debt Investment in Gym equipment and upgrading outdoor furniture and awnings Life Saving 6175 patrol hours over 118 patrols 54 rescues 868 preventative actions 33 Bronze Awards 69 SRC Awards 24 Advanced Resuscitation Awards 16 IRB Crew Awards 6 IRB Drivers Awards Competition Open State Champions by over 800 points Open State Championship Handicap Masters’ State Championship runner-up Masters’ Australian Championship runner-up Australian Championships, outstanding results in the Open, Youth and Masters Juniors State Champions Results like this don’t just happen without a lot of effort and hard work. They are the result of many dedicated members. Our club’s success comes from the commitment of our volunteers. Whether it’s as patrol member, office bearer, workers in the kitchen or bar, training, assessing, coaching or team/age managers there is an enormous contribution from many members. The Life Saving department continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our members are trained and qualified. Our dedicated trainers and assessors work incredibly hard to requalify and train our members. Our beach needs trained and vigilant Lifesavers, so the work performed by our life saving area is invaluable. It is important that we remain focused on maintaining Life Saving services on our beach. Our Surf Sport area continues to excel. We have a proud tradition in surf sport. To win the State Titles by such a considerable margin is a credit to our competitors, coaches and team managers. Data provided by SLSWA confirms member retention rates are higher when members are involved with Surf Sport and the figures show Trigg’s retention rates are higher that most clubs. The Junior area once again made a considerable contribution. The weather did not assist the Junior Section, with the majority of Sundays being cool. There is an incredible amount of hard work required to run the Junior Section. Thanks to the Junior Committee for providing a great environment for our Junior members to start their Lifesaving journey. The Board appreciates the work done by the Age Group Managers and volunteers who make this area such a success.

The Board has continued to adopt a conservative approach to finance with a greater emphasis on volunteers to support functions and activities. The Club is debt free and presently trading in a strong position. It is important to remember that we are a club of volunteers and we need to rely on that to be financially strong. I would like to acknowledge the effort of the Board over the last season. Their dedication has been greatly
appreciated. This Board has been extremely hard working and diligent in the governance of the Club. My thanks
also to the families of the Board for their support and the work that they do for the Club and Bronwyn our Club
Administrator who has again been invaluable in looking after the club’s day-to-day operations as well as taking
on numerous voluntary duties around the Club.
Special thanks to Norm Waldeck who is standing down after 3 years. Norm has done an outstanding job in the
Finance and Administration portfolio as well as Team Management as well as cooking and assisting in the
kitchen.
Trigg has a proud tradition and we consistently “punch above our weight”. There are many members who voluntarily contribute to making Trigg SLSC a very successful club. Thank you all.

2016/17 saw exceptional people achieve exceptional things. 2017/18 saw these same people surpass the previous season, achieving standards that most Surf Lifesaving Clubs around Australia could only dream of. An increase in membership, a reduction in the number of rescues conducted by our lifesavers and surf sports results Western Australia has not seen in 40 years are three highlights of a twelve-month period full of success.
1150, our membership for the 2017/18 season
7317, the number of hours our life savers volunteered patrolling Trigg Beach
54 people were rescued by our lifesaver between October and March
149 visitors to Trigg Beach required first aid assistance
33 newly trained bronze medallion members
1 Senior State Championship
1 Junior State Championship, and
39 Australian Champions
We are extremely fortunate at Trigg Island to have so many members who are prepared to give their time to make a difference. Trigg Island’s success across all areas is a reflection of our members efforts over many years. With this in mind, I am sure Trigg Island will continue to lead the way here in WA, setting the standard for all to follow and again be one of Australia's premier community clubs.
Thank you to our members, supporters and sponsors who have made the 2017/18 season one of the greatest in the history of Trigg Island SLSC. Trigg Island SLSC, saving lives, developing lives. Dan Humble

Director of Finance & Administration
Finance
The 2017/18 season has quickly come to an end and what a fantastic season it has been on all fronts. I would
firstly like to thank the Board for their support over the past three years as without your support the club would
not be in the current financial position it now enjoys. During the past three years tight fiscal control has been
undertaken by the Board yet maintaining the core operations of the club moving along. The club has a very
strong financial base thus ensuring financial sustainably for the 2018/19 season and beyond.
During the season, budgets were structured to ensure the operations of the club were maintained but constantly
reviewed throughout the season. With the support of Directors budgets were maintained throughout the
season.
At the end of the 2017/18 season the club operated on a nett loss of -$40,780. Whilst this is a loss it is a “paper”
loss attributed to the EOY adjustment for depreciation.
The cash flow position of the club as at the 30 April 2018 was $282,800. Of which, in part, $35,500 is specific
purpose funds and $247,300 operating funds. This has established a sound financial base for the club in 2018/19
over the winter period and into the active season. With the ever changing economic environment it is imperative
that the club be placed in a position of financial sustainability, not over one season but over an extended period
of time. This level of current cash flow supports that progress to long term sustainability.
Revenues
Each season the aspect of raising revenue is a daunting task as the sponsorship dollar is much harder to acquire
and other junior sports are attractive. However, with the club maintaining a highly competitive annual
membership fee, in comparison with other sports and clubs, we have maintained and increased our member
base in 2017/18 by 13%.
As with previous seasons the club relied on traditional sources of income – memberships, sponsorship, grants,
club activities, bar, donations and hall hire.
Total income for 2017/18 ($563,000) remained relatively constant with total income received in 2016/17
($675,000). The main variance in 2017/18 can be attributed to no Manly/Freshwater Youth carnival trip
($44,000) and no Aussies accommodation/transport ($48,000). As you will see with that adjustment there is very
little variance across both years.
Once again, this season, Jackie Eley, our Director Marketing and Promotions was able to maintain, our
sponsorship funding despite BMW West Coast choosing to not renew their sponsorship in 2017/18. With the
return of Channel 9 as a GOLD sponsor was a great outcome for the club. We also managed to continue our
association with some strong club supporters who have made a significant financial contribution to specific areas
of club operations. More details regarding our sponsors/supporters is covered by the report from our Director,
Marketing and Promotions.
In 2017/18 the City of Stirling continued to provide our operational grant ($56,000) together with a grant of
$15,000 per annum (over 3years) which enabled us to purchase our own patrol vehicle. The vehicle grant
expired this season. I am pleased to advise that the club is now the owner of the vehicle, as through our strong
financial management we were able to pay out $15,000 as a balloon payment and also have made a $15,000
provision for the replacement of the vehicle when that time arrives.
15 | P a g e
Our thanks also to SLSWA, as like all clubs in WA, SLSWA also provides a financial contribution to the club as a
result of their fundraising initiatives during the 2017/18 season.
During 2017/18 whilst the club did not host the Junior and Senior States, which is a great money raiser for the
club, we did host the Junior Qualifiers and Aussies Titles events. This enabled the club to bridge some of the gap
in revenue previously provided through fundraising/donations.
This was the second season the club leased the Coffee cart operations to Fiebre Coffee House. Jose and his team
did a great job. We are hopeful that this will continue next season. Whilst the club does not raise a lot of money
it does provides a great service to our members with no risk for the club.
During the season we were able to entice a number of community groups to hire out the hall area with great
success. Function bookings at the club have slightly deceased but we are now receiving a steady income stream
from our “regulars”.
The main areas of revenue for 2017/18 are shown in the chart below:
Expenditure
Overall expenditure for 2017/18 was down by 10% compared to 2016/17 this was predominately attributed to
no expense incurred in 2017/18 for the Manly/Freshwater Youth carnival trip and accommodation/transport
costs for the Aussies totalling $92,000. As a consequence, in actual terms, expenditure commitments for
2017/18 was up $40,000 from 2016/17.
A large proportion of club expenditure is incurred in the general operating costs of the club. This season all
endeavours were again made to minimise these expenses through continual review of our practices and
procedures.
During 2017/18 the club engaged GIVEIT (a club sponsor) to develop a new IT platform for the club at a cost of
$10,000. GIVEIT are further contributing approximately $8,000 as part of their sponsorship contribution to the
club, a great gesture and one that is greatly appreciated. The new platform will enable increased data
management and storage. It will also stabilise the club’s computer network in relation to backup and continuous
operations.

Our thanks are also extended to the City of Stirling who has supported us in maintaining the club premises
throughout the season.
Other areas of major expenditure were in relation to expenses associated with Lifesaving & Education (L&E),
Juniors and members facilities.
During 2017/18, the club was in a position to acquire equipment for L&E, Juniors and improving members’
facilities. In relation to L&E we were able to acquire new defibs, oxy Vivas and first aid room equipment and
supplies totalling in the vicinity of $15,000. We also acquired a new ATV at a subsidised cost of $9,000 as a result
of the Aussie Titles being held in Perth. In relation to the Juniors we purchased 20 new soft boards and five hard
boards. Improvements relating to members facilities included Gym equipment upgrade, furnishing and shade
cover for the seaside alfresco area and painting of the main hall. These commitments totalled in the vicinity of
$37,000.
This season also saw our 50/50 equipment subsidy scheme for competitors provided to two competitors.
The apportionment of expenditure for 2017/18 is shown in the chart below:
Functions
The club continued to have a number of set bookings throughout the 2017/18 season which will continue into
2018/19. These include Probus, Baby Sensory classes, Taekwondo classes, Rip Curl presentations and Yoga
classes. Private functions have reduced during 2017/18 and it is hopeful that this may improve in 2018/19.
However, the income from hall hire remains constant at around $36,000 each year.
Corporate bookings during 2017/18 were very few and is a direct reflection of the tight economic climate the
corporate sector is experiencing, which is unlikely to pick up in the short term.

Membership
Club membership for the 2017/18 season saw an increase overall of 13% which is a great outcome for the club
compared to other clubs along the coast. Membership 2017/18 was at 1,150 compared with 1,020 for 2016/17.
The greatest increase has been in relation to Junior and Associate/Parent members up 24%. Cadet/Youth
membership is down 13% compared to 2016/17. Whilst it is a decrease, across the movement this is considered
very low.

Administration
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bronwyn, our Club Administrator, for the wonderful work that she
does in keeping the club going.
Thanks also to Ashley Palmer who took on the role as House Manager again this season. Ash has done a great
job in organising our club functions. To Anthony and his bar staff who have given up their time to run the bar
area, a big thank you. Our thanks also to Allan Porteus our Licensee who makes sure the bar is always stocked
and does the odds jobs around the club together with Boots and Paul to make sure everything ticks over. Thank
you Chris Savage (Chrisso) and all our kiosk helpers a job well done! To our merchandise volunteers who put in
their time each week to support the club, thank you. There are many others who volunteer around the club and
to those members many thanks for your support during the season. Most members wouldn’t be aware the work
Vickie Savage does around the club in relation to making sure the club looks at its best in relation to the garden
and lawn which Vickie maintains at no cost to the club. Many thanks Vickie.
It is this support that makes Trigg the best club along the coast.

Lifesaving
Now that the season is over I can finally pronounce that, in life saving terms, it was a quiet one. Cyclone Marcus
threatened in the late stages but proved to only give our Juniors a test for a couple of hours on their final day of
activities.
Across the range of metrics in the tables below it is interesting to gauge how the prevention and first aid
incidents are somewhat fixed to the rescues, and so the moods of the sea. This marks Trigg as being a beach
where people come for a purer experience of the ocean, more than the hinterland.
The IRB Juniors Water Safety roster continues and will now be set up alongside and with consideration for the
Patrol roster. Many members are now being exposed to the fine art of string-line laying before Juniors trailer
gets to the beach and becoming more rounded IRB operators as a result. Thanks to those experienced drivers
that are somehow always around to impart these valuable skills when needed on Sunday mornings.
In the Shed the renewal is ongoing. The average age of the fleet of rescue boards has dropped to below 5 years,
with other SLSC clubs on the coast being the beneficiaries of older craft. IRBs and their motors are being renewed
regularly in order for Trigg to be as well-equipped as possible. Some will have seen the new ATV, acquired at a
discount after the Aussies, and the 3 new defibrillators and a stretcher in the First Aid room.
The new Patrol Shelter has been a resounding success, proving a sound and sturdy base from which to conduct
first aid operations, and for Patrol leaders to oversee activities. The worth of this vivid beacon should not be
underestimated, as it draws beachgoers to the safety of the flags from all points. Roving patrols to the Point now
have a roster on the shelter’s white board in most patrol teams, as some patrols have consolidated numbers
and can now expand their range of operations.

SLSWA’s annual report, published in July 2017 showed that although Trigg only provided 6 percent of the
patrolling hours across 29 WA SLS clubs in season 16/17, we were responsible for 26 percent of the rescues,
down from 16 percent in 15/16. I’m sure that our contribution to the safety of the people of WA and visitors to
our beach is a tremendous source of pride for our members.

There were 118 Patrols, with the season extending into April, Easter Monday this year. This is up from the 113
of the previous year, causing the increase in total hours. Overall patrol attendance has been pleasing, with
Defaults an unfortunate constant at 20 percent. This is mitigated by an increase in Make Ups from last year, as
the number of patrolling members plateaus.
Thank you to those who made themselves available to do substitute patrols. This generosity is crucial to keeping
patrols staffed with the correct skills. I would also like to thank the Carnival patrol for their One Club, One Team
attitude, helping Trigg to lead both in competition and Life Saving.
Education
An often-repeated phrase around training sessions is that “Trigg needs to hold itself to a higher standard”.
Scenarios considered unrealistic at other clubs are prudent and necessary at Trigg, as we must be equipped to
handle all that our beach, with its demanding conditions, can throw at us. The Trigg Education team deserves
the highest praise for upholding these lofty standards before and during the 2017/18 Season.
As usual at Trigg, the Education timetable is packed. Gabby Jolliffe, as Proficiency Coordinator this season split
the dry and wet proficiency times to week nights and weekend mornings respectively. Sessions were well
attended, and a booking system will be trialled in the coming requalification season. Proficiency assessors do
an amazing job, giving up their time to make sure all members are “rescue ready” to patrol our beach in the best
possible way.

Trigg’s IRB Drivers are an integral and invaluable component of Trigg. Without smooth operating and expertly maintained IRBs we are not rescue ready and are not abiding by the terms of our contract with the City of Stirling. From the obvious requirement for patrols, to Junior Water Safety, including putting out the cans, to the Sunday morning swim. This extends further to Carnival water safety, including the Aussies, where Trigg’s participation included providing IRBs. A small number of very diligent, very hard working, and very brave IRB trainers do a magnificent job and deserve all the plaudits they get.

Trigg’s Assessors promote Trigg Island’s high standard throughout the State, from Broome all the way to North
Cottesloe. This year 11 assessors attended in total over 30 different assessments at locations other than Trigg.
Their dedication to the Surf Life Saving movement is sometimes a life’s “work” and truly admirable.
At the core of Lifesaving and Education at Trigg are the trainers. Our Trainers are some of the best teachers,
coaches and motivators on the coast. Their lessons endure beyond Surf Life Saving and are an asset to the
community. Bronze and SRC trainers deserve particular praise for the sheer effort that it takes to maintain
consistently high standards over multiple courses and numerous candidates. A special thanks to Bryan Gibbs for
taking on the coordination of SRC training role. In the absence of a Bronze Coordinator, Cas Ryan took on that
role and had many helpers to put members through their Bronze Medallion. Michael Cook was adjudged as the
club’s Assessor of the Year and has been a stalwart of the Education team. I thank him for his ongoing support
and experience.

Youth
We started the season with 32 Under 14s of which 18 had regular attendance on Sunday mornings.
U 15s started with 28 members with 18 regular attendance on Sunday mornings.
U 17s had 43 registered members.
U 19s had 28 registered members.
Throughout the season youth members gained many awards from SRC, Bronze, IRB crew and a few IRB drivers.
Awesome work guys.
The Sunday program worked on a four-week rotation for the season accounting for carnival dates. Each week
there was a swim at 9.30 including Masters and any Open members who joined us. Beach events were offered
from 9 – 9.30 and then after the club swim we had board races and then combined team events. Following this
earlier on in the season we had beach rugby, volleyball and cricket. When the weather improved the Youth
members opted to spend their optional time surfing, or assisting nippers.
Four club trophy events were held this season of which three were won by youth members.
Social events were conducted this year with the first being the Volleyball night in November at North Beach.
Over 40 youth members attended, and a great night was had by all with pizza supplied by the club.
December 24 saw the Around the Island Challenge, after a change of date due to lightening cancelling the event.
The swim, run, long board, short board, rugby pass, scoot and rugby pass back to the ski after two team
challenges was enjoyed by all.
Competition at carnivals was usually represented by about 12 U14s and 12 U15s for the youth area. Most
athletes competed in the water, but some ventured to beach and did quite well.
Highlights for me, as youth manager, have been:
(1) Fantastic team support in the making of teams on a Sunday, so everyone could be in a team. The
encouragement whether it was on a Sunday or at a carnival at States or Aussies was brilliant right
up to our last competitor finishing an event.
(2) The feedback from the Nipper area how wonderful our Youth members were in supporting their
activities and being positive role models.
(3) The smiles on Youth members faces for those who competed at States and Aussies. For many
U14s and U15s it was a first Aussies and many of our athletes were just so happy to be a part of
the whole experience. Mistakes were made, lessons were learned, and successes were achieved
and celebrated by all.
22 | P a g e
Our Trigg Youth should also be extremely thankful to our wonderful hierarchy of coaches that nurture,
support and challenge our members to strive to do their best in whatever discipline.
Also, a great thanks to the supportive parents who have allowed coaches to coach and team managers to
co-ordinate activities to try to achieve the best outcomes for all Youth.
Our Youth members have excelled in competition at States and Aussies. Congratulations to our AUSSIE
medal winners.
This season Trigg SLSC supported eight youth members to attend SLSWA camps.
TOAD camp saw attendees - Jackson Ballardin, Ally Gillmore, Indie Lee Mulvay, and Aysha Ferguson.
Rise Up attendees - Danielle Bordin, Ryan McGarry, Amanda Winton and Bree Elliott.
My philosophy has been to try to run a program for Youth members across all areas. In a way I am lucky that I
get to meet them in transition from 13s each January then I tend to be involved or get to know them better
through SRC and or Bronze Medallion training.
I hope that I have met the needs of Youth members this year and wish to continue into next season, having
gained more friends in Youth and family members.

Director of Surf Sports
Season 2017/2018 has been Trigg Island’s most successful in recent years. Our athletes were dominant across
all disciplines at both State and National levels.
Our Surf Sport captains, Lachlan Armstrong & Ruby Warne lead our senior team, winning the:
SLSWA SunSmart Senior State Championship,
SLSWA SunSmart Senior State Endurance Championship, and
SLSWA SunSmart Senior State Championship Handicap Trophy
The 2017/18 season started with our IRB and board riding athletes representing Trigg Island with the passion
and commitment we have seen every year. Next, our pool athletes again showed their class, winning the Pool
Rescue State Championship by a 243 point margin to second place. As a result, we saw 10 members selected in
the Western Suns Pool Rescue State Team: Joshua Windsor, Ben Jones, Ruby Warne, Jake Smith, Lachlan
Meldrum, Callan Smith, Madeline Thomson, Chalise Pratt, Will Savage, Sascha Innocent and Assistant Manager
Jen Jones, the team finished 3rd
behind Queensland and New South
Wales. Along with Kane Smith,
Jakson Egan and Byron Kimber, the
team of 13 from Trigg Island finished
5th overall.
The endurance championships kicked
off the summer events with many of
our athletes achieving exceptional
results. Their commitment to training
during the winter months was
rewarded but also ensured Trigg
Island had set the standard for the
remainder of the 2017/18 season.
After the first two rounds of the
SLSWA carnival series, the Western Suns State Teams were selected. Both Youth and Senior teams were made
up of a large number of Trigg Island members. Nikita Fredonnet, Sacha Innocent, Jazmin Shipway-Car, Patrick
Eley, Will Savage, Max Hunter and Tallis Davey were part of the youth team that competed at Freshwater Beach,
NSW, finishing 3rd behind Queensland and New South Wales. Our senior athletes, Daniel Humble, Ceris Graham,
Ruby Warne, Ben Jones, Macarah Mallis, and Maddie Thompson raced in the heat and calm seas of Adelaide.
Again, WA finished 3rd behind NSW and QLD.
Surf Life Saving WA’s new teams format, Surf League was the next test for our athletes. The 3-event series
brought all aspects of surf sports together on the same beach at the same time. Trigg Island fielded multiple
teams throughout the series with Reece Baker, Ben Jones, Ceris Graham, Macarah Mallis and Madeline Thomson
being selected to represent WA as part of the Western Suns Elite Team.
This year’s State Championships delivered the swell of the season. In some cases, the surf got the better of us,
but by the end of the weekend Trigg Island came away with a commanding victory, winning our 3rd consecutive
State Championship and Handicap Trophy. Our Youth shone ensuring a bright future for Trigg Island. Kelly
24 | P a g e
Mulvay showed his surf skills winning both the U19 and open board races. This outstanding achievement saw
Kelly named the winner of the Mike Cook Trophy for 2018.
Aussies 2018 was on our home beach, Trigg Island deliver!
The Youth set the beach on fire with outstanding results. Many of our athletes walked away with multiple
medals; however, it was Sunday’s finals that had everyone questioning what Trigg Island had done throughout
the years to win both the U/15 female and male board relays.
The Masters were next and showed they were also a force to be reckoned with. Outstanding efforts across all
disciplines ensured Trigg Island finished 2nd overall and the best Masters club in Western Australia.
Finally, it was time for our Open athletes add to the Trigg Island’s medal tally. With inclement weather forecast
for Sunday, long days on the beach were the flavour of the week. Our ski paddlers showed their class, the Open
Male ski relay walked away with second in a nail biting sprint finish. Our double ski teams set the beach alight
with multiple teams racing across the Under 19 and Open finals. The highlights were Reece Baker and Dan
Humble winning the open men’s for a second time, Devon Caren and Doug Lewin finishing 2nd and Shannon
Reynolds and Alana Nicholls finishing 4th in another tight finish. Our board paddlers showed there were able to
mix it with the best in Australia. Patrick Eley, Devon Caren and Ceris Graham all performed well in their individual
finals. Our ski paddlers, Dan Humble, Ceris Graham, Shannon Reynolds and Devon Caren all made their
respective finals. The blue-ribbon event of the championships, the Open Men’s Taplin Relay was a once in a 40
year event. The team made up of Reece Baker, Dan Humble, Jake Smith, Callan Smith, Devon Caren & Blake
Alsopp finished 2nd ensuring the 2017/18 season was Trigg Island’s most successful ever.
Thank you to all our members and supporters, your efforts throughout the season have been an integral part of
Trigg Islands success on and off the beach.

Blue Hole Club
What a remarkable and eventful season we have had! We didn't have as many swim cancellations as last year,
only two because of rough seas, and none from shark alerts, (I still reckon those we had last year were over-
reactions), but we had similar numbers, averaging only 22 each Sunday. All up, there were 39 A Graders, and
26 B Graders, and only 38 of those being financial. There were actually 12 first-time swimmers, but only a
couple were consistent.
No one managed to do all of the 20 swims, but Dick Lester managed 19, with 18 achieved by Toni Arthur, Brian
Carthew and Kevin Edwards. Congratulations to two who achieved milestones: John Whittick 300 swims, and
Georgia Smith, 100
Unfortunately, one of the cancelled swims coincided with our hosting of the Annual Challenge with the
Scarboro Polar Bears for the 2nd successive year. They can now boast that it is now twice we haven't beaten
them – hopefully when they host us in their new premises we will reinstate the status quo.
This report cannot be complete without touching on a near disastrous event on 20th August when Les Lindsay
suffered a major heart attack after finishing his swim. The event was well documented, and we know that if
Les had a choice, he could not have chosen a better time and place to have it. Our people reacted immediately
in the most perfect fashion, and there is no doubt they saved Les's life. I know of two other surf life-savers that
passed away recently with unheralded heart attacks, because there were no people there to save them. A
huge thank you goes to Mike Deephouse, and upwards of a dozen others who swung into immediate action.
Despite lower numbers we were able to pay out prizes similar to last year as there was a carryover from sales
of the new windcheaters. Ross and Margie Hood of Commercial Stationery Wangara were again exceedingly
generous with their great gift vouchers. They have been doing this now for 12 years and I am conscious that it
is not a business decision, Ross just has a passion for Blue Hole. It is with great regret that Ross is no longer
with us, having succumbed valiantly to the ravages of cancer.
So once again it is a huge thank you to you all for your involvement each week which I am sure makes our
winter Sundays happily anticipated. Along with Ross & Margie Hood, I must also especially thank:
• Les Lindsay for looking after the handicaps
➢ “Chippy” Greenhill who is religiously there at “sparrers” to set up the course and ensure safety aspects
are attended to.
➢ Steve Glossop and the many duckie drivers and crewies.
➢ Mike Cook and his subs for doing the essential Risk Assessments each week.
➢ Likewise, I also owe a huge thank you to my wife Nan and all the lady helpers for attending to the
refreshments we enjoy so much afterwards.
➢ A special mention to Kevin Edwards and Jenny Taylor who are so generous with looking after newer
swimmers and don't worry about losing points as a result.
26 | P a g e
Now to the winners, and for the record I have listed the first 3 places, although only the first two get prizes.
A Grade: Points
3rd Mike Cook 86
2nd Maddie Thomson 88
1st Lara Taylor 95
B Grade
3rd Richard MacKenzie 95
2nd Brian Carthew 96
1st Toni Arthur 108
I recognise that the usual stalwarts at the swims are getting a bit longer in the tooth, and we really need to do
all we can to encourage younger ones to come forward. There were a few of these, but the most consistent,
and therefore winner of the Ken Dobson Encouragement Award, is Daniel Beales.
For the first time ever, we have a kind donor who has provided a $100 prize, for the person who got last or 2nd
last more times than the rest, which I have called the UP prize (Unreal Persistence), donated by D & SM
Asphalt, and this I am delighted to say, goes to Eddie Campbell.
In conclusion, I do ask myself what we can do to address declining numbers, but I accept that in these changing
times there are many other activities that our people get involved in in winter months, so we can only continue
to meet a need and to make Sunday mornings a relaxed and happy time. See you in 2018.
Brian Carthew
Director of Marketing & Promotions
The 2017/18 season brought with it so many successes across all areas, a tremendous achievement in itself. Your willingness to serve as volunteer for one of greatest Australian Iconic movements, your generosity of spirit, time, humour and your skills asking for nothing in return is humbling and supports the club to remain sustainable. It is all of you, doing what you do, building on the work of past volunteers that contributes to Trigg remaining a successful community hub. It demonstrates a level of commitment from you all. I wish to thank all the sponsors and supporters who came back on board for another season. Thank you to the Federal Government, State Government, the City of Stirling and Surf Lifesaving WA for their continued financial contribution and support. In a tough economic climate, we were able to secure all but one of our existing sponsors and with over 32 sponsors and supporters I know that we are an extremely lucky club.
For a number of our sponsors and supporters, making a financial donation didn’t stop at handing over the cheque.
• Channel 9 our Gold sponsor raised additional funds totalling $750;
• MBH in addition to the financial contribution each season as a silver sponsor, Dave and Vicki Motteram have given countless volunteering hours that spans over two (2) decades and are still giving back;
27 | P a g e
• Managing Director and club sponsor and member Rob Innocent and the team at DENMAC are another fine example of extending goodwill and generosity. Rob and the team provided labour and materials to improve equipment storage space and undertook other remedial work around the club, all at nil cost; and
• Matt Terry of GiveIT, our Information and Technology provider continues to deliver service well over and above what has been formally agreed - again at nil cost.
These are just a few notable examples of incredible generosity.
The financial support we receive from small Not-for- Profit community groups is also significant. North Beach Lions have played a key role for many years giving what they can. The relationship between Trigg Art Club and Rotary Club of Karrinyup spans 49 and 44 years respectively. Between these two (2) groups they will have
28 | P a g e
donated over $320k in equipment since the early 1970s and it doesn’t stop there. For the 2018/19 season both groups have agreed to joint fund the purchase of the newly acquired ATV at a cost of $9k.
We were also lucky to secure funding from other sources, in particular a $3k grant from 3 Oceans Property as part of the Iconic Scarborough Community Chest Initiative and $4k from the Surf League competition due to the participation of the athletes and courtesy of SLSWA.
It would be difficult to quantify the amount of volunteer hours invested, this component is priceless.
Holding a position on the Board does provide a deeper insight and appreciation into the machinations required to keep a club like Trigg operational. Every day volunteers are in attendance undertaking various tasks, making significant savings for the club. It’s great to see the club offering roles, social channels and a sense of purpose for those who choose to get involved. It is a fine example of how a community should be - inclusive. It is a great pleasure that once again I have been able to work with sharp, knowledgeable, dedicated and determined volunteers. Lynne Whittle sharing her graphic design skills has done an amazing job as editor of the Club newsletter, a true professional and such a positive influence to have around. It is to the merchandise shop team that I owe my final thanks and appreciation. Marie Waldeck, Vicki Motteram and Nan Carthew have been overseeing the area for several years now. They all have bucket-loads of patience, showing flexibility, remaining positive and delivering a professional service often in extenuating circumstances. This area has been well managed by Marie Waldeck who took the lead and oversaw the team. As the club continues to respond positively to changing needs, make sure you secure a seat, your club needs you if it is to continue the work of providing a solid foundation for future custodians. Finally, thank you all for allowing me, in some small way, to be a part of this amazing journey. Together we are making history. Jackie Eley

Director of Junior Activities
It has been a pleasure to lead the Junior section of the club during the 2017/18 season.
We have enjoyed a significant increase in membership this year, which reflects the quality environment and
training that is offered by volunteers at Trigg. Numbers have been strong across all age groups for club day
Sunday, and also strong at training midweek and on Saturdays.
For that we thank our magnificent beach – the best in the metro area – and are also indebted to the volunteers
who nurture and guide the children under their supervision. The age group managers are a fantastic team in
every age group. The coaches for training sessions. The IRB and water safety crew led by Kev Edwards and Steve
Glossop. Chrisso and his merry band of helpers in the kitchen. And of course, Bron in the office making sure
everyone is organised to get the documentation in order.
All these people have made life for me very easy this season.
The club has excelled in Junior competition – again winning the Junior State Titles. Success was widespread
across all age groups. There were fantastic performances from individuals and the team strength that Trigg is
famed for.
Under the direction of Chris Davies and with a budget from the Board, we were able to update our fleet of boards
and for the first time acquired a large number of soft boards for the younger age groups.
This year’s Parent awards in the Junior section went to Hayden Marchetto and Rob Walker. Hayden runs an age
group (the 10s Tigers), ran training sessions and pitched in with everything else including carnival set-up as Junior
Boots. He fully deserved the award. The only problem with Hayden is stopping him from putting his hand up
for everything. That age group is very fortunate to have Hayden at the helm.
Rob Walker is an ever present in orange in the surf. He was the most active water safety person we had and
with his northern hemisphere hardiness, was happy to wade off into the surf on even the most inclement of
days. Rob is a late starter with surf club but has certainly embraced it wholeheartedly.
This year, our young captains and vice captains from the 13s were Mikaela Innocent, Femke Negus, Jarvis Caren
and Harper Davies. They were all fantastic role models for the Nemo’s and all the age groups below, whether
that was demonstrated by their attitude at training at club day or their efforts in competition. Good luck for the
future guys – you are the future of our great club.
It is unfortunate this year, as happens every year, that we have various parents and volunteers moving on. This
year the list includes;
• Chris Davies – U13 age group manager, trainer, water safety, carnival set up and general good guy. Chris was also the winner of the Open Best Club Person award this year.
• Karen Beazley – U13 age group manager, functions co-ordinator and generally a Mum on the beach to any child who needed one.
• Jeremy Hunter – water safety board rider extraordinaire and diagnoser of many a shoulder strain with his physio skills often coming in handy.
• Rob Innocent – trainer for Tuesday and Thursday sessions, carnival set-up crew and warm up leader for carnivals.
30 | P a g e
These people will all be sorely missed, but each is replaceable. We have a fantastic framework at Trigg that
ensures constancy of
excellence. That is why Trigg is the
Junior club of choice along the coast.
I wish you all the best for next season
and thank you very much for the
opportunity this season.
Rowan Caren

Paul Attenborough – Life Membership Resume
Paul became involved with our Club as a Parent Helper when their children joined as Nippers in the 1980/90s
period.
In 1994 Paul gained his Bronze & took on the role of Under 11 Age Group Manager, he continued as Age Group
Manager for a further 3 years, moving up age groups making it 4 years as Age Group Manager.
In the 1998/99 season, he took on the crucial position as Under 16 Officer. Crucial, as this area was most
vulnerable to losses of numbers as teenagers found other pressures & interests. He remained in this role for a
further year before moving into the position of U19 Officer which he held for a total of 3 years.
In season 2003/4, he was elected Club Captain & remained in this role for 6 years, a remarkable achievement.
Other positions held by Paul were Youth Patrol Co-Ordinator for 2 years & Director of Social Activities.
Since 1994 Paul has carried out Patrolling Duties for 23 years & over the last 10 years has averaged over 35 hours
on patrol per season. He has held the positions of Patrol Vice Captain & Patrol Captain during this time & has
been a great mentor & role model for our younger patrolling members.
Paul is now retired from the workforce & has joined the “old boys” group & is at the Club most days sweeping
out the boatshed, First Aid room & doing odd jobs around the Club.
Paul has made a very significant contribution to our Club & was duly elected a Life Member at the 2017 AGM
Warren Vanalopulos – Life Membership Resume
Warren was drawn to our Surf club when his eldest daughter Sarah was old enough to join the Nippers. Warren
soon found out if you hang around watching your kids long enough, you are going to get roped into doing
something.
Warren was elected Under 9 Age Group Manager for 1994/95 season the year that he also gained his Bronze
Medallion. He continued as an Age Group Manager for a further 3 years, 1 year as Under 11, and two years as
Under 12.
It is with this background that he was elected Director of Junior Activities in the season 1998/99, and remained
in this position for a total of 4 years. During this period, many innovations were achieved in training and
competition. Of particular significance was the creation of a program for training Juniors leading towards the
Surf Rescue Certificate, a document that has won national recognition.
Warren has also provided valuable support at carnivals, heading up the Water Safety for six years and assisting
with judging of R&R at State level for 18 years. At National level, he has helped with judging since 1997, mainly
in R&R and Belt arena, totalling 19 years. This was recognised in 2015 when he won the Bob Woodger award for
R&R- Overall commitment and dedication to R&R and Belt races over the Australian Championships.
Always showing an interest in the welfare of our young people, he took on the role of Junior Education Officer
in 2002/03 season following his period as Director of Junior Activities. Warren continued in this role for a total
of 5 years and was also Life Saving Events Captain for two years during this time. He was so dedicated to the
club that he nominated for Club President in 2003 but missed out by a small margin.
But you cannot keep a good man down, as he held positions in the club for the next 10 years.
33 | P a g e
He took on the role of Director of Life Saving and Education for three years along with Vice President and
Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee in 2009/10 season. In 2012/ 13 season he was drafted again to help the
Juniors out and took on the role of Junior Equipment Manager.
While carrying out all these tasks at the club he continued with patrolling duties. To understand his commitment,
he also held the position of Vice Captain or Captain for the past 6 years and averaged over 33 hours on patrol
per season over the last 9 years alone. It is important that we have members like Warren, mature and
experienced to help our younger members while they are on patrol.
Warren has made a very significant contribution to our club since obtaining his Bronze in 1994 and was duly
elected a Life Member at the 2017 AGM.
John Rhatigan – Life Membership Resume
John Rhatigan joined the club when his daughter became involved as a nipper back in 1992. Both his brothers
Mike and Neil were already active members. It was not long before John began training for his Bronze Medallion,
which he obtained on 19th December 1992.
In the 1994/95 season, John took on the role of Junior Water Safety Officer a position he held for 9 years. He
then took on the role of Bronze Co-ordinator which he held for three years before becoming Advanced Award
Co-ordinator in 2004/05 season again holding this position for a further three years.
In season 2008/09, John took on the role of Patrol Education Officer for the next two years. After a break, he
renominated for that position and has held it for the last 5 years. For the last four years, John has been the Life
Saving Manager. In his current role as Lifesaving Manager, John has been responsible for carefully steering the
organisation of our patrols. John has been doing patrols continuingly for 24 years, a feat that no member has
achieved before. He has averaged over 35 hours per season on Patrols during the last ten years alone. John also
maintains his proficiency as an IRB driver and crewmen and utilises these skills regularly while on patrol.
Since season 2001/02 John has actively been involved in training or assessing within the club. He has requalified
each year in this capacity and ensures the highest standards of training are maintained in the club. John is a
mentor to new instructors and younger members.
Outside of Trigg, John also attends Bronze examinations at other metropolitan clubs that seek him out for his
knowledge and fairness as an independent assessor. During the off season while spending time in Broome with
his family he regularly helps the local club there as a trainer and independent assessor.
John has performed the roles he has undertaken with a remarkable degree of professionalism and hard work. In
recognition of his service John Rhatigan was duly elected a Life Member at the 2017 AGM.

2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
(a) Income Tax
The Association is exempt from income tax under Division 50 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
(b) Leases
Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all of the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses on a straight-line basis over the life of the lease term.

2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
(c) Revenue and other income
Revenue is recognised when the amount of the revenue can be measured reliably, it is probable that economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the Association and specific criteria relating to the type of revenue as noted below, has been satisfied.
Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable and is presented net of returns, discounts and rebates.
All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).
Sale of goods
Revenue is recognised on transfer of goods to the customer as this is deemed to be the point in time when risks and rewards are transferred and there is no longer any ownership or effective control over the goods.
Grant revenue
Grant revenue is recognised in the statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income when the entity obtains control of the grant, it is probable that the economic benefits gained from the grant will flow to the entity and the amount of the grant can be measured reliably.
When grant revenue is received whereby the entity incurs an obligation to deliver economic value directly back to the contributor, this is considered a reciprocal transaction and the grant revenue is recognised in the statement of financial position as a liability until the service has been delivered to the contributor, otherwise the grant is recognised as income on receipt.
Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club Inc receives non-reciprocal contributions of assets from the government and other parties for zero or a nominal value. These assets are recognised at fair value on the date of acquisition in the statement of financial position, with a corresponding amount of income recognised in the statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income.
Donations
Donations and bequests are recognised as revenue when received.
Interest revenue
Interest is recognised using the effective interest method.
Rendering of services
Revenue in relation to rendering of services is recognised depending on whether the outcome of the services can be estimated reliably. If the outcome can be estimated reliably then the stage of completion of the services is used to determine the appropriate level of revenue to be recognised in the period.
If the outcome cannot be reliably estimated then revenue is recognised to the extent of expenses recognised that are recoverable.

Notes to the Financial Statements For the Year Ended 30 April 2018
2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
(c) Revenue and other income
Gain on disposal of non-current assets
When a non-current asset is disposed, the gain or loss is calculated by comparing proceeds received with its carrying amount and is taken to profit or loss.
Other income
Other income is recognised on an accruals basis when the Association is entitled to it.
(d) Borrowing costs
Borrowing costs that are directly attributable to the acquisition, construction or production of a qualifying asset are capitalised as part of the cost of that asset.
All other borrowing costs are recognised as an expense in the period in which they are incurred.
(e) Goods and services tax (GST)
Revenue, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST), except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
Receivables and payable are stated inclusive of GST.
The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included as part of receivables or payables in the statement of financial position.
Cash flows in the statement of cash flows are included on a gross basis and the GST component of cash flows arising from investing and financing activities which is recoverable from, or payable to, the taxation authority is classified as operating cash flows.
(f) Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value.
Inventories acquired at no cost, or for nominal consideration are valued at the current replacement cost as at the date of acquisition, which is the deemed cost.
(g) Property, plant and equipment
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment.
Items of property, plant and equipment acquired for nil or nominal consideration have been recorded at the acquisition date fair value.
Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club Inc
Notes to the Financial Statements For the Year Ended 30 April 2018
2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
(g) Property, plant and equipment
Where the cost model is used, the asset is carried at its cost less any accumulated depreciation and any impairment losses. Costs include purchase price, other directly attributable costs and the initial estimate of the costs of dismantling and restoring the asset, where applicable.
Assets measured using the revaluation model are carried at fair value at the revaluation date less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Revaluations are performed whenever there is a material movement in the value of an asset under the revaluation model.
Plant and equipment
Plant and equipment are measured using the revaluation model.
Depreciation
Property, plant and equipment, excluding freehold land, is depreciated on a straight-line basis over the assets useful life to the Association, commencing when the asset is ready for use.
Leased assets and leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or their estimated useful life.
The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable asset are shown below:
Fixed asset class Depreciation rate
Furniture, Fixtures and Fittings 5% - 20%
Competition Equipment 10%-20%
Leasehold improvements 5% - 20%
At the end of each annual reporting period, the depreciation method, useful life and residual value of each asset is reviewed. Any revisions are accounted for prospectively as a change in estimate.
(h) Financial instruments
Financial instruments are recognised initially using trade date accounting, i.e. on the date that the Association becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.
On initial recognition, all financial instruments are measured at fair value plus transaction costs (except for instruments measured at fair value through profit or loss where transaction costs are expensed as incurred).
Financial Assets
Financial assets are divided into the following categories which are described in detail below:
• loans and receivables;
Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club Inc
Notes to the Financial Statements For the Year Ended 30 April 2018
2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
(h) Financial instruments
Financial assets are assigned to the different categories on initial recognition, depending on the characteristics of the instrument and its purpose. A financial instrument’s category is relevant to the way it is measured and whether any resulting income and expenses are recognised in profit or loss or in other comprehensive income.
All income and expenses relating to financial assets are recognised in the statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income in the ‘finance income’ or ‘finance costs’ line item respectively.
Loans and receivables
Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not quoted in an active market. They arise principally through the provision of goods and services to customers but also incorporate other types of contractual monetary assets.
After initial recognition these are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less provision for impairment. Any change in their value is recognised in profit or loss.
The Association’s trade and other receivables fall into this category of financial instruments.
Significant receivables are considered for impairment on an individual asset basis when they are past due at the reporting date or when objective evidence is received that a specific counterparty will default.
The amount of the impairment is the difference between the net carrying amount and the present value of the future expected cash flows associated with the impaired receivable.
In some circumstances, the Association renegotiates repayment terms with customers which may lead to changes in the timing of the payments, the Association does not necessarily consider the balance to be impaired, however assessment is made on a case-by-case basis.
Any gain or loss arising from derivative financial instruments is based on changes in fair value, which is determined by direct reference to active market transactions or using a valuation technique where no active market exists.
Financial liabilities
Financial liabilities are classified as either financial liabilities ‘at fair value through profit or loss’ or other financial liabilities depending on the purpose for which the liability was acquired. Although the Association uses derivative financial instruments in economic hedges of currency and interest rate risk, it does not hedge account for these transactions.
The Association‘s financial liabilities include borrowings, trade and other payables (including finance lease liabilities), which are measured at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method.
Impairment of financial assets
At the end of the reporting period the Association assesses whether there is any objective evidence that a financial asset or group of financial assets is impaired.
Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club Inc
Notes to the Financial Statements For the Year Ended 30 April 2018
(i) Cash and cash equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents comprises cash on hand, demand deposits and short-term investments which are readily convertible to known amounts of cash and which are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value.
Bank overdrafts also form part of cash equivalents for the purpose of the statement of cash flows and are presented within current liabilities on the statement of financial position.
(j) Employee benefits
Provision is made for the Association's liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the reporting period. Employee benefits that are expected to be wholly settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.
3 Critical Accounting Estimates and Judgments
The directors make estimates and judgements during the preparation of these financial statements regarding assumptions about current and future events affecting transactions and balances.
These estimates and judgements are based on the best information available at the time of preparing the financial statements, however as additional information is known then the actual results may differ from the estimates.
The significant estimates and judgements made have been described below.
Key estimates - receivables
The receivables at reporting date have been reviewed to determine whether there is any objective evidence that any of the receivables are impaired. An impairment provision is included for any receivable where the entire balance is not considered collectible. No impairment exists in the current financial period.
Key estimates - inventory
Each item on inventory is reviewed on an annual basis to determine whether it is being carried at higher than its net realisable value. During the year, management have written down inventory based on best estimate of the net realisable value, although until the time that inventory is sold this is an estimate.
