Your commitment helped thousands of families meet basic needs and start the journey out of poverty to self-sufficiency.

One thing that I have always loved about Wesley is our holistic approach to clients. An example from last year is incorporating mental health education into our after-school programming. Counselors taught groups of 3rd graders to identify and control their emotions. Both parents and students extolled the benefits of this activity and we look forward to expanding this program. I also was thrilled to see our Pre-K children and seniors participating in activities together to create great relationships between these two generations.

We expanded available opportunities for job training in 2019. Our program teaching residential construction skills gave our neighbors a pathway into an in-demand industry.

I hope you enjoy learning more about the lives you change with your gift. Wesley has always been focused on serving our neighbors and with your help they are thriving.

In 2019, we also took time to look at the future of Wesley. Wesley ended the year with a new strategic direction – deciding to stay in the Near Northside while expanding much needed services to neighbors across the city.

None of the accomplishments this year were possible without you— our donors, our volunteers, and our partners. Your commitment to Wesley and its clients propelled all of the progress highlighted in this report. For that and for all you do, I am truly grateful.

Sincerely,

Amy CorronPresident and CEO

The children in her class were drawn to Valerie’s enthusiasm for learning and her dynamic personality. Likewise, Valerie fell in love with teaching. With the encouragement of Wesley staff, Valerie decided to take courses to earn a Child Development Associate (CDA) Certification. She only has the classroom observations left to complete, which she plans to do in the fall.

Valerie’s own child was having challenges with speech. Valerie had him tested and learned he is on the autism spectrum. She knew he would need extra attention and decided her fellow Wesley teachers could provide him the best care. Her experience at Wesley showed her children who had disabilities. She saw how courageous they were and how hard they worked to learn. Valerie tells her kids every day that everyone has a place in this world, and no one is better than anyone else.

Valerie says it is a relief to know her children are in such good hands while she is working or studying for her certification. In addition to working on her CDA, Valerie signed up for financial coaching at the Financial Opportunity Center. She never had any money to spare, so had never opened a bank account. Her first goal was to save $500, and she was surprised how quickly she reached that goal. Valerie has continued to save and not only opened a checking account, but also savings account. She is proud to have this safety net for her family in these uncertain times.

Valerie tells everyone about Wesley - neighbors, school parents, and even the ladies at the grocery store. If you’re looking for excellent childcare, go to Wesley. If you need training to get a better paying job, go to Wesley. And as she always says, there’s a place in this world for everyone, and Wesley may be the place for you!

Everyone Has a Place a

Place in The WorldWhat a difference a year makes. Less than a year ago, Valerie had a low-paying job in retail, was working around the clock and rarely saw her children. She came to Wesley looking for a childcare job but found so much more. Having cared for babies since she was 12 years old, she had a natural instinct when it came to connecting with children and became a full-time childcare teacher. She also has learned how to manage her money and has saved money for her family’s future.

Lizeth came to Wesley at a point in her life when she felt that she had no place to turn. As a victim of domestic violence, she and her children escaped one night with only the clothes on their backs. Homeless and living in a shelter, she knew it was up to her find a better life.

After seeing a Wesley flyer, Lizeth came to Wesley seeking emergency food. Soon, seeing the many programs that Wesley had to offer, she began work with the Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) where she learned about scholarship opportunities, financial assistance and ways to improve her credit. Lizeth joined the FOC with a desire to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. The Wesley coaches were so impressed by her commitment, they approached her about a new program - a Patient Care Technician training. She would not only train as a CNA, but she would receive training in EKG and Phlebotomy. Lizeth completed the “Bridge” classes that prepared her for college and then finished her coursework at Lone Star College and St. Luke’s CHI Hospital.

While completing her training, Lizeth continued to receive food, budgeting help, and other

financial resources from Wesley. She enrolled her two children in Wesley’s Early Head Start Program. Her son received on-site counseling. Through this process, he came out of his shell and both of her children blossomed in the program.

Lizeth’s hard work and dedication paid off. After completing her training, she got a job at St. Luke’s CHI Hospital. Lizeth continued to save money and even purchased a car and mobile home. After two years, Lizeth was promoted to a position paying $14.60 an hour.

Lizeth was so appreciative of Wesley’s role in her success, that she began to promote Wesley to her co-workers. Seeing the impact her story was having on others, she decided to develop her speaking skills too. Not letting any grass grow under her feet, she enrolled in an on-line Public Speaking program at Harvard University.

She tells others if you take advantage of the opportunities given to you, there can be a happy ending. She says, “At Wesley, they go out of their way to help, they pick you up when things get tough and they cheer you on, until you cross the finish line.”
