Introduction to the Council

The Sri Lanka – Greater Mekong Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of

Commerce (formerly known as Sri Lanka – Greater Mekong Subregion Business

Council and Sri Lanka – Vietnam Business Council) was inaugurated on 8th June,

2010. The main objective of the Business Council is the further expansion of

trade, investment and tourism between Sri Lanka and the Greater Mekong:

Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The Sri Lanka – Greater

Mekong Business Council functions through a group of Businessmen in Sri Lanka.

The Council also maintains a close relationship with the diplomatic missions of

the Greater Mekong in Sri Lanka.

The functions of the Business Council include:

Liaising and coordinating with Sri Lanka’s Diplomatic Missions in the partner countries, on matters of relevance to achieve the objectives

Exchange of information with relevant parties in the partner countries, with regard to trade, investment and tourism.

Facilitation of meetings between persons from the partner countries seeking business and investment opportunities and relevant persons in Sri Lanka, including Government functionaries.

Making arrangements for the provision of relevant services to persons from the partner countries seeking business and investment opportunities

Making recommendations to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with regard to policy interventions that may be required, to create a conducive environment for the promotion of trade, tourism and investment.

Review of Activities

Interactive Evening with Ambassadors

An Interactive Evening on the Opportunities Available to develop Trade, Investment and Tourism between Sri Lanka and Myanmar & Thailand, was held on 25th June 2018 at the Colombo Club, Taj Samudra. More than 40 representatives from SLGMBC member companies, as well as companies that are interested in doing business with the Greater Mekong Sub-region participated at this event. The presentations by the Ambassadors was following by a lively Question and Answer session.

7th Annual General Meeting & Interactive Session

The 7th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka – Greater Mekong Business Council was held recently

at the Colombo Club. Her Excellency Pham Thi Bich Ngoc, Ambassador of Vietnam and Her Excellency

Chulamanee Chartsuwan, Ambassador of Thailand were the Chief Guests at the event.

Mr. Sirimal Fernando, Deputy Managing Director of Astron Limited was elected by the Members as

the President for the year 2018-2019. Mr. Ranil Seneveratne, Director, Ranfer Teas (Pvt) Ltd; Mr.

Nishan Seneviratne, General Manager (outbound), Aitken Spence Travels (Pvt) Ltd & Trevor

Rajaratnam, Executive Director, Travel7 (Pvt) Ltd were elected as Vice Presidents. The Member

Companies AG International (Pvt) Ltd., Maliban Biscuit Manufactories (Pvt) Ltd. and Siam City Cement

(Lanka) Limited were elected to the Committee. The outgoing President, Mr. Andre Fernando,

Chairman & Managing Director, MAC Holdings (Pvt) Ltd. will continue on the Committee as the

Immediate Past President.

Her Excellency Pham Thi Bich Ngoc informed the membership of the opportunities available in

Vietnam, while Her Excellency Chulamanee Chartsuwan who had recently briefed the members

regarding the opportunities available in Thailand, took this opportunity to update members on the

outcomes of the visit of the Prime Minister of Thailand, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, to Sri Lanka.

Exploring Business Opportunities Available in Thailand The Council conducted a Seminar and Networking Event under the title “Exploring Business Opportunities Available in Thailand” on Wednesday, 10th October 2018 at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

Her Excellency, Chulamanee Chartsuwan and official from the Embassy participated at this event and briefed the gathering on the opportunities available for Sri Lankan Businesses to expand their businesses engagements with Thailand and were also available to answer any specific questions raised by the audience.

A special highlight of this event was the agreement signed between Mr. Singtoroj Chanchai and the

Sri Lanka – Greater Mekong Business Council, appointing Mr. Chanchai as an Independent

Representative of the Council.

Success Stories of Doing Bussiness with the Greater Mekong Sub Region

An event titled “Sharing of Success Stories of doing business in the Greater Mekong Sub-region:

Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam” on 21st March 2019. The event commenced with a presentation on

brand building by Ravi Jayawardena, Group Chief Executive Officer, Maliban Biscuit Manufactories

(Pvt) Ltd. Paul Hugentobler, Chairman, Siam City Cement Public Co., Ltd. shared his experiences of

doing business with Vietnam and Andre Fernando, Chairman, MAC Holdings (Pvt) Ltd. shared his

experiences on doing business with Thailand, while Mr. Chintaka de Zoysa, Director - Logiwiz Limited

& Head of International Expansions, Hayleys Advantis shared his experiences on doing business with

Myanmar, at this event. Embassy officials from the Thai and Vietnam embassy were present at the

networking session.

Over 50 Members and non-members participated at this event. These companies were given the

opportunity to obtain answers for any specific questions they had on doing business with Myanmar.

Trade & Business Promotion Mission to Myanmar

The Sri Lanka – Greater Mekong Business Council (SLGMBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, organized a successful Business Promotion Mission to Myanmar from 8th – 11th May 2019. The delegates met with the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Myanmar and attended the Yangon Investment Forum organized by the Yangon Regional Government. The Council together with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) Myanmar organized an information session for delegates, which was followed by individual meetings between delegates and potential business partners in Myanmar, based on the requirements of each delegate. Delegates from Member Companies that participated in this business promotion mission were successful in establishing contact with potential business partners, while some of these Companies are about to conclude agreements with their counterparts.

Dissemination of Trade Related information

The Council has continued to constantly update the Membership regarding Trade Fairs/Exhibitions held in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam as well as current trade related information via Circulars.

Secretariat

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce provided Secretarial Services to the Council during the

period under review.

Auditors

M/s. Edirisinghe and Co. were elected Auditors of the Council. The Audited Statement of

Accounts of the Council for the period 2018-2019 is annexed.
