Trail in October. The .7-mile pedestrian and bike path is in a linear park traversing North Cordelia residential subdivisions, as well as woodland, grassland, and riparian habitat. It will eventually be part of a Ridge Trail segment that connects McGary Road and Rockville Hills Regional Park.

Lower Oat Hill Mine Trail: In November, the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council dedicated the 4.5-mile Lower Oat Hill Mine Trail, which extends from Calistoga (and the future Napa Valley Vine Trail) up through Robert Louis Stevenson State Park to the Palisades Trail. Primarily owned by California State Parks, the trail is managed by the Napa County Regional Park

and Open Space District. The scenic trail is part of the new Sonoma and Napa GoNorth alignment, which will connect to the future Mt. St. Helena spur trail.

The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council closed 2013 with 342 miles of dedicated Ridge Trail. Through trail dedications, trail construction, and trail planning, the council worked toward putting more Ridge Trail miles in place. In addition, hundreds of volunteers and trail enthusiasts participated in the Ridge Trail Council’s numerous events around the region.

Trail DedicationsMoore Creek Ridge Trail: In June, the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council dedicated the first 2.7 miles of Napa County’s GoNorth route in the new Moore Creek Regional Park. The park, acquired only four years ago by the Napa County Regional Park and Open Space District, is one of a chain of protected park and land trust properties in Napa County. Another mile will be completed and is expected to open in 2014; the 673-acre park will eventually contain about 3.7 miles of Ridge Trail.

Trail OpeningsFeeder Trail #1: In November, the East Bay Regional Park District opened three miles of Ridge Trail in Franklin Hills between Martinez and the Alhambra Valley. Feeder Trail #1 was established as a public right-of-way almost 150 years ago; it passes through open grasslands and oak woodlands, providing sweeping views of the Bay Area.

Pinole Valley Watershed Ridge Trail: In January, the East Bay Municipal Utility District opened three miles of realigned and improved Ridge Trail along the eastern edge of the Pinole Valley Watershed. This stretch of trail, which offers expansive views, connects from the Pereira Road trailhead in Alhambra Valley to the Ridge Trail at Fernandez Ranch.

El Corte de Madera Ridge Trail: The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District opened one-half mile of new trail connecting from California Water Service land to El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve across Highway 35. A new staging area at the trailhead is scheduled to open in early 2014.

Land ProtectedRockville Trails: The Solano Land Trust purchased the scenic 1,500-acre Rockville Trails property in September for a regional park. For years, residential development had been planned for this property—a landscape of oak woodland, vernal pools, open meadows, and rocky ridges. The land trust raised the $13.5 million purchase price from the California Coastal Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Board, private foundations, and hundreds of individuals. Six miles of new multiuse Ridge Trail will link Solano and Napa counties.

Trail ConstructionSanborn County Park: The trail crew for the Santa Clara County Department of Parks and Recreation, along with hundreds of Ridge Trail volunteers, worked on Sanborn County Park’s John Nicholas Trail between Lake Ranch and Sunnyvale Mountain. The crew built 2.5 miles of trail funded in part by a Coastal Conservancy/Bay Area Ridge Trail Council grant. The county also worked on the adjacent Skyline Trail; both trails will open in 2015.

Mt. Umunhum: A planned Ridge Trail spur to the top of Santa Clara County’s 3,486-foot Mt. Umunhum will provide long-awaited public access. In February the California Coastal Conservancy awarded the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District a $1 million grant to plan for a staging area, trails, plantings, visitor amenities, and interpretation of the site’s natural and cultural history. The district broke ground on the new trail in December.

Sonoma Mountain: The Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District and Sonoma County Regional Parks Department finalized construction of the scenic 4.5-mile North Slope Sonoma Mountain Ridge Trail from

Jacobs Ranch to Jack London State Historic Park. The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council’s Trail Steward, John Aranson, managed trail contractors and Conservation Corps North Bay crews. A new trailhead and access road improvements will allow trail users to access the westernmost point of the trail off Sonoma Mountain Road.

Trail PlanningDias Ridge Trail Phase 2: A Bay Area Ridge Trail/Coastal Conservancy grant provided funding for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service to complete final design and construction documents for .2 miles of multiuse Ridge Trail near Muir Beach. The segment will connect the 7.5-mile Dias Ridge Trail at the historic Golden Gate Dairy to the Redwood Creek Trail on Muir Woods Road; the trail will ultimately connect to the Coast View Trail.

Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve: The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority completed plans for a new staging area and new 1.5-mile trail (of which one-half mile will be dedicated as multiuse Ridge Trail in 2014) in Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve. The staging area includes a parking area for twenty cars and three horse-trailer rigs, and the new trail will include a segment accessible to equestrians.

Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District Vision Plan: Ridge Trail Council staff and advocates participated in a district-led vision-planning effort, resulting in an ambitious draft plan with goals and priority actions for the next 30 years. The plan identifies 25 high-priority projects, including construction of 16 Ridge Trail sections or connectors, and recommends closing all of the Ridge Trail gaps between Highway 92 on the Peninsula and on Mt. Umunhum in the South Bay.

Upper Crystal Springs Watershed: The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission completed plans for six miles of Ridge Trail along the ridgeline of the Peninsula Watershed south of Highway 92. Trail construction is expected to begin in 2016 following environmental review and permitting.

Ridge Trail EventsRidge to Bridge: More than 300 hikers and cyclists participated in the annual Ridge to Bridge hike and ride. The event offered several hiking and cycling options, with the primary route traversing Mt. Tamalpais, the headlands, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Between registration and participant fundraising, the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council raised $45,000. Top fundraisers earned a stay at Cavallo Point Lodge, classes from the REI Outdoor School, bike accessories from Saris Cycling, and outdoor gear from REI.

National Trails Day: More than 50 volunteers joined the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, REI, and Santa Clara County Parks to build a new Ridge Trail in Sanborn County Park above Saratoga. Scheduled to open in 2015, the trail passes through forests and rock formations, with views across the Santa Clara Valley. Volunteers also worked on the Dias Ridge Trail in Marin County and the Ridge Trail in San Francisco’s Presidio and Mt. Sutro Open Space Reserve.

East Bay Hills Hike and Ride: Sixty-five hikers and twenty-one equestrians joined the 2013 East Bay Hills Thru Hike and Ride, including thirty hikers who completed the full five-day,

sixty-mile route from Martinez to Castro Valley. Volunteers organized the camping, meals, and entertainment at three campsites along the trail. During one evening, Ridge Trail circumnavigators, who had hiked all sections of the Ridge Trail, shared

inspiring stories of their adventures and encouraged others to take on the challenge. The event raised more than $19,000 for East Bay trail organizations, including $7,200 for the Ridge Trail.

Tour de Fat: New Belgium Brewing Company hosted its annual Tour de Fat in Golden Gate Park, a fundraiser for the Bay Area

Ridge Trail Council and San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. An unexpected downpour kept away a huge crowd but more

than a hundred cyclists joined the bike parade. In the afternoon, more people showed up to enjoy music, theater, costumes, games, and beer. Thanks to New Belgium and all the volunteers, the event raised $13,000 for both organizations.

REI-Ridge Trail Service Day: The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council had another successful REI-Ridge Trail Service Day, partnering with local land-managing agencies, REI, Chipotle

Mexican Grill, and PG&E. More than 550 volunteers pitched in to work on the Ridge Trail at 15 sites

around the Bay Area. Volunteers brushed trail, installed

drainages, moved dirt, removed invasive plants, built new trails, and improved campsites. Over the past six years, nearly 3,000 volunteers have donated about 12,000 hours at REI-Ridge Trail Service Day!

Watershed Trail 10-Year Anniversary: In 2013, the Ridge Trail Council offered exclusive outings to the San Francisco Watershed so members and guests could celebrate the 10th

anniversary of the trail opening to the public. The 13-mile hikes covered the full length of the Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail in the 23,000-acre watershed. In the 10-year period since the trail’s dedication, more than 8,000 people have participated in the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission outings program.

Almaden Quicksilver Member Event: Fifty-five Ridge Trail members enjoyed a special members-only event in October at the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum. In addition to meeting other members and touring the museum, Ridge Trail Council members enjoyed hiking or riding the park’s five-mile Ridge Trail.

Solstice Ramble: In December the Ridge Trail Council hosted its annual Solstice Ramble and party, with 42 Ridge Trail sup-porters participating. The group visited Andy Goldsworthy’s new art installation, Tree Fall, and hiked up the newly rebuilt Ridge Trail near Rob Hill. A separate group hiked up to Inspira-tion Point for a nighttime view of the city. The event closed with an evening of refreshments and cheer at the Presidio’s Thoreau Center.

VolunteersIn 2013, approximately 900 dedicated volunteers donated thousands of hours: they worked at major trail events and participated in trail workdays, meetings, and outings. The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is indebted to all the volunteers for their enthusiastic support!

OutreachThousands of people connected to the Ridge Trail through Facebook, Twitter, and e-news. The Facebook site gained 539 fans in 2013.

The REI-National Geographic Geo Stories website featured the Bay Area Ridge Trail. The interactive site features maps, photos, videos, and information on nonprofits throughout the country. The Ridge Trail page included 12 images and descriptions of the trail in different Bay Area locations.

New Bay Area Ridge Trail Council cycle jerseys became available for purchase on the voler.com website!

Awards and GrantsAmerican Trails: The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council and its REI-Ridge Trail Service Day partners, REI and Chipotle Mexican Grill, received a Partnership Award from American Trails, a national nonprofit working on behalf of all trail interests. The Ridge Trail Council has worked with REI and Chipotle to host six REI-Ridge Trail Service Days, where thousands of volunteers have donated time to improve and maintain the Ridge Trail.

REI: The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council received a generous $30,000 grant from REI to support volunteer and stewardship efforts, including REI-Ridge Trail Service Day. REI’s 2013 grant

program funded projects that contribute to providing diverse, accessible, and popular areas for REI members to recreate.

Cox Conserves Hero Award: Bay Area Ridge Trail Board Chair Bill Long was a finalist for the Cox Conserves Hero Award, a

joint project of the Trust for Public Land and Cox Enterprises. The award recognizes local environmental volunteers who work to create, preserve, improve, or enhance the shared outdoor places in our communities. The Ridge Trail Council received a $2,500 grant as the finalist’s designated organization.
