Annual Report 2012 - 2013 Dear Friends, As we look back over the last two years at the Center for Coastal Studies, we see growth and expansion in the range and diversity of our programs, in our geographical reach across the Cape and Islands, and in the number of collaboraons we have established with local, regional and naonal organizaons. In response to growing concerns with the Cape’s waste water management issues, the water quality monitoring program expanded the number and distribuon of sampling sites to include staons throughout Nantucket Sound. Addional sampling to test for contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), including pharmaceucals, personal care products and hormones, funded in part by the Massachuses Environmental Trust, was carried out in partnership with several other organizaons both on and off Cape. The Marine Geology department was awarded a mul-year contract from the Naonal Park Service to assess coastal instability and sediment movement on the Outer Beach; this vital research will allow local, state and federal managers to develop management strategies and prepare for the effects of coastal erosion and sea level rise. In 2012, the Center introduced a new iniave to remove derelict fishing gear and other debris from the marine environment. In collaboraon with local fishermen, Provincetown’s Harbormaster, and the Town of Provincetown, more than 240 abandoned fishing traps were recovered, along with nets, ropes, buoys and cables were removed over 23 days. That same year, the Center’s Marine Fisheries Program collaborated with the towns of Provincetown and Truro to development a 50-acre community subdal aquaculture development area (ADA) in the nearshore waters of Cape Cod Bay. In 2012 and 2013 our educators led more than 700 school children from seven schools in six towns on mulple field expedions to Cape Cod Bay and other waterways to learn about the importance of clean water. Around 1500 Cape Cod residents and visitors took to the pathways, beaches, movie and lecture theaters to learn about the natural history of our coastal and marine environment. Meanwhile, our long term marine mammal rescue and research programs connued their incredibly important work on behalf of these sll very much endangered animals. The mul-decadal databases that this work has produced in now being recognized as invaluable baselines for understanding the impacts that climate change may be having to whale habitat, food supply and behaviorial paerns and that ulmately could be the most serious threat to their survival. While we have accomplished a great deal over the past two years, our mission of understanding and protecng the ocean environment and coastal ecosystems has become more much more challenging as the threats to ocean and coastal health have also intensified. Your support and encouragement have been invaluable in this endeavor and we are very grateful for your connuing interest. Thank you. President and CEO

Annual Report 2012 - 2013

Dear Friends, As we look back over the last two years at the Center for Coastal Studies, we see growth and expansion in the range and diversity of our programs, in our geographical reach across the Cape and Islands, and in the number of collaborations we have established with local, regional and national organizations. In response to growing concerns with the Cape’s waste water management issues, the water quality monitoring program expanded the number and distribution of sampling sites to include stations throughout Nantucket Sound. Additional sampling to test for contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), including pharmaceuticals, personal care products and hormones, funded in part by the Massachusetts Environmental Trust, was carried out in partnership with several other organizations both on and off Cape. The Marine Geology department was awarded a multi-year contract from the National Park Service to assess coastal instability and sediment movement on the Outer Beach; this vital research will allow local, state and federal managers to develop management strategies and prepare for the effects of coastal erosion and sea level rise. In 2012, the Center introduced a new initiative to remove derelict fishing gear and other debris from the marine environment. In collaboration with local fishermen, Provincetown’s Harbormaster, and the Town of Provincetown, more than 240 abandoned fishing traps were recovered, along with nets, ropes, buoys and cables were removed over 23 days. That same year, the Center’s Marine Fisheries Program collaborated with the towns of Provincetown and Truro to development a 50-acre community subtidal aquaculture development area (ADA) in the nearshore waters of Cape Cod Bay. In 2012 and 2013 our educators led more than 700 school children from seven schools in six towns on multiple field expeditions to Cape Cod Bay and other waterways to learn about the importance of clean water. Around 1500 Cape Cod residents and visitors took to the pathways, beaches, movie and lecture theaters to learn about the natural history of our coastal and marine environment. Meanwhile, our long term marine mammal rescue and research programs continued their incredibly important work on behalf of these still very much endangered animals. The multi-decadal databases that this work has produced in now being recognized as invaluable baselines for understanding the impacts that climate change may be having to whale habitat, food supply and behaviorial patterns and that ultimately could be the most serious threat to their survival. While we have accomplished a great deal over the past two years, our mission of understanding and protecting the ocean environment and coastal ecosystems has become more much more challenging as the threats to ocean and coastal health have also intensified. Your support and encouragement have been invaluable in this endeavor and we are very grateful for your continuing interest. Thank you. President and CEO

HIGHLIGHTS

Humpback Whale Studies Program

The effects and effectiveness of satellite tagging on humpback whales

Satellite-monitored radio tags provide detailed information on whale movements and habitat use - information vital to the conservation and management of large whales. Research on tagged whales in the Gulf of Maine humpback population allows our scientists to identify and characterize physical and physiological responses to the tag; to provide data to improve tag performance and minimize tag loss and impact; and to better understand possible effects of tagging on individual animals. The project is also producing new information on humpback whale movement and habitat use in the Gulf of Maine.

New aging techniques for humpback whales

Center scientists developed a molecular approach for estimating the age of individual humpbacks utilizing a method that was previously used only in mice and humans. This new technique can now be applied to humpback whales everywhere in the world, and will greatly improve the understanding of population biology, longevity and recovery status. Eventually this same technique may be applied to other marine mammal populations.

Impacts of entanglement on whales The proximity of humpback whales to humans makes them vulnerable to a wide range of human impacts, and one of the greatest threats comes from entanglement in fishing gear. An ongoing study based on the scars left on entangled humpback whales indicates that an average of 12% of the population becomes entangled annually, and more than half of the humpback whales in the Gulf of Maine have been entangled at least once.

Marine Animal Entanglement Response (MAER)

In 2012 and 2013 the MAER team successfully disentangled 33 leatherback sea turtles and 12 humpback and right whales.

MAER also conducted entanglement response trainings for new and expanding networks and teams in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the US.

Right Whale Research Program

In March 2012, the right whale population program’s aerial survey team observed a bowhead whale, Balaena mysticetus in the waters just off Orleans’ Outer Beach. The individual, a juvenile approximately 43 feet long, was engaged in social behavior with a group of mostly young North Atlantic right whales in a formation known as a Surface Active Group (SAG). Not only was the first time in recorded history that a bowhead had been seen so far south in the North Atlantic, but it was also the first documented interaction between bowhead whales and right whales.

The earliest recorded sighting of a right whale mother/calf pair in Cape Cod Bay occurred on January 12, 2013. The mother, named Wart, is well known to CCS, having been freed from a potentially life-threatening entanglement by the MAER team in 2010. The calf, which researchers estimated to be about a week old, was probably born in Cape Cod Bay - another first for our area.

“These have been remarkable years in our studies of Cape Cod Bay. These observations, along with extraordinary numbers of rare right whales in Cape Cod Bay, seem to be pointing to profound changes in the coastal habitat, to which the whales are responding."

Dr Charles “Stormy” Mayo, PhD.

Director, Right Whale Research Program.
