PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEFought for democracy reform arm-in-arm with our grassroots partners. Through our Inclusive Democracy Project (IDP), Demos provided support and capacity-building help to 25 state-based grassroots partners working to champion racial justice and democracy reform. Among our partners’ victories this year: the successful Amendment 4 in Florida, which restored voting rights to 1.4 million people with felony convictions; and public financing for elections in Washington, DC.

Threw fresh light on the mechanics of racism with our innovative “social exclusion” series. Social exclusion is the interaction of social deprivation, economic disadvantage, and democratic disqualification, which occurs both on the structural and personal level. In a series of papers and blog posts, Demos examined how social exclusion drives racism, explains why black people have everything to lose under Trump, creates persistently high black unemployment, racial disparities in pay and benefits, and a broken labor market for everyone, including white workers. The series explored how labor unions can counter social exclusion in the workplace, and will soon look at how social exclusion affects the role of the Supreme Court and the status of higher education, among other topics.

As we face the coming year, with its promise of progressive change and its threat of regressive challenge, Demos’ expertise will be needed more than ever. Your continued support will allow us to expand the reach of our partnerships, create new legal strategies to combat voter suppression, and push forward bold policy ideas to fuel the democratic change that is needed. Thank you for the work you do to build an inclusive, progressive future, and for your invaluable partnership with Demos.

In solidarity,

Sabeel RahmanPresident

DEAR FRIENDS,

Across the country, demand is growing for the bold policy ideas, effective litigation and deep movement-building strategies that Demos offers. The recent elections proved it—not only in the diversity of the candidates elected, but in the fact that deeply conservative states endorsed progressive ideas such as raising the minimum wage, expanding Medicaid, and restoring the right to vote formerly incarcerated people. Even as conservative leaders embraced voter suppression tactics, six states approved measures to expand the electorate and protect the democratic process. I’m proud to say that Demos had a hand in many of these victories.

Your support has been essential to the success of our work this year, and we at Demos are tremendously grateful. Let me share with you some of Demos’ most exciting accomplishments in 2018.

Defended the right to vote against right-wing attacks. In addition to our ongoing legal work to expand access to the ballot, as Election Day approached our legal team led emergency litigation in 6 states (Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee). In every case, we succeeded in achieving relief and greater access to the vote. Our efforts this year prevented hundreds of thousands of eligible voters—many of them people of color—from being disenfranchised.

Equipped policymakers and changemakers with achievable, progressive policy ideas. We produced two policy briefing books—the federal-level Everyone’s America, and the state-level Everyone’s Economy—designed to equip grassroots organizations, policymakers and others with the policy tools they need to build an equitable democracy and economy for all of us. Demos trained dozens of policymakers and partner organizations on how to use these policies to guide their work. Progressives are often asked, “How are you going to pay for your policies?” To respond, we wrote laid out the case demonstrating that public investments produce more returns to taxpayers than they cost.

Introduced federal debt-free college legislation. After many years of building the case for debt-free college, Demos was proud to introduce signature legislation, The Debt-Free College Act.  As part of our continuing efforts to provide cutting-edge analysis and advocacy for solutions to the affordability crisis, we produced A Blueprint for College without Debt, which examines how states should think about designing debt-free college with a focus on racial and class equity, and provides guidance on policy and messaging.

Equipped advocates with compelling new ways to talk about race and class. Demos’ Race-Class Narrative equips grassroots organizers and elected officials to change the way we talk about race in this country and challenge the racially divisive, dog-whistle tactics used to separate us from one another. We have presented our findings at over 50 events to over 2,000 people, providing them with powerful research, tools and messaging to call for an America that works for all.
