Each day, The Providence Center serves people whose lives are “different

and yet the same” (Anne Frank). Our clients come from different ethnic

backgrounds, perspectives, lifestyles and experiences. Some are homeless

and others are business executives. The youngest is five months old and

the oldest is 88 years old. They are all different, yet all the same because

they have turned to The Providence Center for help.

This year’s annual report tells the stories of four people who came to

The Providence Center with diverse needs and found diverse solutions.

These clients have graciously volunteered to share their stories and their

pictures with you. Please join me in celebrating their accomplishments

and the accomplishments of all the men, women, children, adolescents and

families we serve each year.

~ Jim Botvin, Chair, The Providence Center Board of Trustees

The Providence Center’s employees are diverse not only in gender and

ethnicity, but also in age, sexual orientation, work styles, education

and skill sets. Every employee’s unique perspective helps to shape The

Providence Center’s culture and contributes to our clients’ experiences.

Having employees that reflect the communities we work with helps

to ensure that we will relate to and support every client’s needs. Our

commitment to a diverse workforce ensures that The Providence Center

is a place where people are respected and valued for their work, where

individual initiative is rewarded and where employees are empowered to

fulfill their professional and personal goals.

Anne Frank once wrote, “We all live with the objective of being happy;

our lives are all different and yet the same.” The Providence Center

commemorates her words in every service we provide to each client and in

every interaction we have with the community as we help our clients bring

happiness to their lives.

~ Dale K. Klatzker, PhD, President/CEO, The Providence Center

HERB battled drug addiction and was in and out of prison for nearly 30 years. Each time he was released, he landed back on the streets—without a job, without money, without a place to live, turning again and again to drugs to solve his problems.

Herb had tried recovery programs but decided that they didn’t work as well as hiding behind the brick wall he had built around himself. Recovery programs were short-term. His brick wall was permanent. He could hide behind it and feel safe. But all that changed when his little sister died from a drug overdose. Herb had lost three other sisters from drug-related causes. He didn’t want that to be his legacy.

The staff at The Providence Center’s Long-term Substance Abuse

Residential Treatment Program taught Herb that his brick wall was stopping him from finding recovery and that, if he was to get better, he needed to feel safe outside it. At The Providence Center, Herb learned skills that would help him to lead a substance-free life, and brick by brick, his wall came down.

Today, Herb goes to court just as he has for over 30 years, but now he doesn’t go in handcuffs and he doesn’t go for the same purpose. He goes in a suit and tie and talks to young kids about recovery. He shows by example how they can turn their lives around. With each life he touches, Herb creates a new legacy, a legacy built on the lives of the kids he’s helped to save.

“The streets raised me and prison was my life. I wanted to change, but didn’t know how.

For many years, I thought that drugs and alcohol were my only problems. At The Providence

Center, I learned that I was wrong. They taught me how to get in touch with my feelings. They

helped me believe that I deserved a better life.”

Five years ago, CARoLAnn was homeless and living under a bush in a playground. She was drinking, using drugs and had abandoned her family. She had cheated death many times. She was afraid, alone, desperate and suicidal when she decided to walk into The Providence Center and ask for help.

At The Providence Center, Carolann learned that substance use was only part of her problem. She also needed to confront major depression, borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. She accepted the mental health diagnoses, but refused to believe she was an addict. It was only to appease her family and get off the cold winter streets that she decided to enter The Providence Center’s Short-term Substance Abuse

Residential Treatment Program.

With the help of the staff at The Providence Center, Carolann finally took her first step on the path to recovery and admitted she was an addict. She moved into a sober house and, eventually, into her own apartment. She attended support groups and worked with specialists from The Providence Center’s Employment and Education Services to enroll in college.

Today, Carolann is a successful single mother of three and, as a board member of National Alliance for Housing and Urban Development Tenants, has testified before Congress in support of affordable housing. She is also a dean’s list scholar, a member of an international honor society for psychology students, recipient of the Psi Beta Carol Tracy Community Service Award, and a board member of the Providence In-town Churches Association.

This once homeless woman, struggling with mental illness and in denial of her addictions, followed the rocky path to recovery with dignity, earning the respect and admiration of everyone she met along the way.

“At one point in my life I was living under a bush in a Providence playground barely surviving

and battling a 32-year addiction. Today my life is rewarding and fulfilling because the people at

The Providence Center never gave up on me. They always treated me with respect and helped

me to regain my family, my soul and my life.”

Episodes of extreme sadness, anger and happiness started when SHERLIE was just 15 years old. She recognized the signs and realized she needed help. She knew people who had done well at The Providence Center. She would start there.

When Sherlie was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, she was relieved. Now, she knew why one minute she would be happy and the next she would be sobbing, mad, screaming and trying to pick a fight. Now, she knew why she tore her room apart and why she couldn’t get out of bed. Her illness had a name and now she could fight back.

Sherlie fought hard. After just three years in the Children’s Intensive Services

program at The Providence Center, she learned to understand her illness and control her emotions. She learned how to prevent attacks by recognizing what triggered her anxiety. Her illness no longer controlled her; she controlled it.

Sherlie’s attending the Community College of Rhode Island now. At 18 years old, she’s still considering a career path. She would like to help other members of the Latino community by becoming an interpreter in the judicial or healthcare fields, but she enjoys culinary arts and is seriously considering that as a career choice. Whatever path she chooses, her counselor knows she will succeed: “Sherlie is smart, confident and mature. She’s out to change the world, and she’s not going to let anything stand in her way.”

“I didn’t feel like waking up; I didn’t feel like going to school; I would just lie in bed all day

and say, 'What’s the point?' But with my counselor at The Providence Center I could cry,

I could be mad—it didn’t matter—she made it okay to pour my heart out. She helped me

realize I could do something with my life.”

TRACEY knew something was going on inside TYLER that she could not control, but no one believed her. After many frustrating years, Tyler was finally diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity, bi-polar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Then came the nightmare—finding the right placement for him.

By the time Tyler was 11 years old, he had been placed in schools and residential settings all over Rhode Island and had failed time and time again. Tracey was skeptical when a social worker from Tyler’s school district suggested The Providence Center School. Tyler had been through so much. Was he headed for just one more disappointment? Tracey decided to take a chance.

At The Providence Center School, Tyler quickly made friends and jumped from a third to fifth grade reading level in just six months. Tracey watched him run from the bus excited about his day, his teachers and what he had learned. She watched him as he learned to control his behavior; and, after all these years, Tracey watched as Tyler began to believe that he could succeed. Tyler was finally doing well and Tracey knew why: “At The Providence Center School, Tyler was not just cared for, he was cared about.”

Tyler is 13 years old now. He’s still learning about himself and how to manage his behavior, but Tracey is confident that he will succeed. She knows this because Tyler carries with him a gift—a gift given to him by the staff at The Providence Center School, a gift Tracey knows he will treasure for the rest of his life: the gift of hope.

“When Tyler was just two years old, I knew he was different. He would laugh as he banged his

head repeatedly on my hardwood floor and become furious when I tried to stop him. For years, I

fought to get him the help he needed; but, over and over again, I was told that his behavior was

my fault. No one would help us. And then we found The Providence Center School.”

Fiscal Year 2007 (FY07) was an exciting year highlighted by change, growth and a reorganization designed to consolidate programs in order to provide the best possible continuum of care within a sustainable business model.

In Child and Family Services, The Providence Center School increased capacity and reorganized to ensure that appropriate educational, therapeutic and clinical structures were in place to support continued growth. The Early Childhood Institute rolled out a highly successful consultation program at Rhode Island childcare centers; the Adolescent Partial Hospital program became the provider of choice for many private clinicians and organizations statewide; and the Children’s Intensive Services’ program grew significantly to address the increasing challenges facing the families we served.

The Acute Care Services’ Homeless Outreach Team celebrated its 20th anniversary and expanded services at Kennedy Plaza in Providence while participating in a Providence-based work group established to improve conditions at the Plaza.

In Residential Services, The Providence Center’s Short-term Residential Substance Abuse program was moved to the Mathias Building on the campus of the Eleanor Slater Hospital; Brick Manor, a 16-bed group home in Providence, was established; and Director of Residential Services Sharon Morello, RN, BSN, conducted a four-part series on addiction open to all Providence Center staff.

In Adult Services the Rhode Island Assertive Community Treatment (RIACT) teams were expanded to include a new level of client care. The Providence Center now has four RIACT teams supporting over 436 clients.

In FY07, the Performance Improvement Department implemented a streamlined incident reporting system and formed the Environment of Care Committee designed to assist in providing a safe, functional, accessible and effective environment for Providence Center clients and employees.

The Providence Center’s Information Services and Health Information Services

departments introduced an Electronic Medical Record. This new computerized system is a convenient, cost-effective method of maintaining and delivering client information to all clinicians.

The Marketing Department introduced “TPC Weekly,” a weekly e-newsletter designed to provide consistent communication throughout the organization. Marketing also redesigned all Providence Center advertisements and published the first six-page, full-color version of “Perspective,” a quarterly newsletter published by The Providence Center.

To help train, educate, and certify staff members and fulfill accreditation requirements, The Providence Center’s Human Resources Department implemented “Essential Learning,” an extensive library of online courses designed for behavioral health organizations.

In Fund Development, over 200 people attended The Providence Center’s Circle of Stars event at which Jason Fowler, Kevin Martyn and Philip Noel were recognized for their generosity and support of the community. This event raised $150,000 to support the important work done at The Providence Center. Also in FY07, members of The Charles E. Maynard Society gathered at the home of Senator Sheldon and Dr. Sandra Whitehouse to recognize new Society members; and the Sixth Annual Golf Tournament, held at the Ledgemont Country Club, was a great success with a record-breaking 170 golfers helping to raise $140,000.
