Commitment. At ABC of NC, we remain loyal to our original mission — a passionate dedication to help children with autism.

ABC of NC understands that an autism diagnosis presents extraordinary challenges for a family. It requires perseverance, devotion and an extraordinary amount of time and energy. We are committed to quality individualized diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services for children with autism and their families. And we actively pursue funding to provide these services to all families who need us, no matter their socioeconomic status.

This year, we are proud to announce that ABC of NC further expanded our services with the addition of The Autism Clinic, now providing a full range of psychological assistance to families covered by both private insurance and Medicaid.

Other accomplishments:

■ Extension of our “Summer Institute,” an intensive autism training for educators, made possible by the Reynolds American Foundation and the Pratt Family Foundation

■ Introduction of Autism Speaks’ “Light It Up Blue” celebration of Autism Awareness Month, featuring prominent Winston-Salem buildings bathed in blue light

■ Installation of a new sensory garden with generous labor and a grant from the BB&T Lighthouse Project

■ Collaborations with five school systems for shared individual education plans, classroom consultations, and transitional student programs

■ Continued support of legislative advocacy efforts for equal treatment and funding for people with autism

This annual report is our chance to recognize and thank you, our committed donors, who help us ensure that children with autism can develop the skills and motivation to learn and thrive for their best life possible.

In April 2013, our lives changed forever when our son, Samuel, was diagnosed with autism. Doctors recommended Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy because it is proven to be the most effective treatment.

We live in Greenville, NC and, unfortunately, there are few ABA providers in our area. We considered many options and ultimately enrolled Samuel in an intensive one-to-one therapy program at ABC of NC. Each Sunday, my wife and Samuel load into the car and make the trip from Greenville to Winston-Salem so he can receive therapy. On Friday afternoons, they pack-up again and make the drive back home so we can spend the weekends together. It is unbelievably hard on our young family, but as any parent will tell you, you do what is best for your child. And, right now we know that Samuel is exactly where he needs to be, receiving the medically necessary treatments that we know will change his life trajectory.

Before Samuel started therapy last August, he didn’t notice when I came home from work. It was like he was in his own little world. Now, Samuel comes home and greets me with a big smile, a warm hug and a loud “Hey!” Recently, we played a game of catch, laughing and playing until he finally fell asleep. A year ago, our little boy would never have picked up a ball at all, much less initiated a game.

We couldn’t be prouder of Samuel and his accomplishments this year. My wife and I will always remember the countless nights of crying and feeling hopeless about how we were going to help our son. Samuel is a shining example of how early intervention and intense therapies can make a difference. We now have hope for our son and his future.
