2007 Annual Report 2007 Annual ReportThe Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. The Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation11

I am pleased to present our annual report to the board of trustees, Lighthouse employees, volunteers, partners, donors, and community members who dedi-cated themselves to advancing our mission in 2007. As the old saying goes, ‘the only constant is change’ and that was certainly true of the Lighthouse for the Blind this past year. 2007 was a time of major organizational expansion and leadership tran-sitions. Through it all, many

talented and generous people worked together to ensure that these changes resulted in greater opportunities for people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities to live independently and achieve their goals.

In 2007, George Jacobson prepared to step down from his twenty-eight years as Lighthouse president. George has been a prominent leader in promoting blind employment and equal opportunity. His commitment to the Lighthouse mission has been evident through-out his forty years here, and this past year was no exception.

George worked closely with President-elect Kirk Adams this past year to implement a comprehensive transition plan that made the transfer of leadership intentional, orderly, and beneficial to the organization. Throughout 2007, Kirk added responsibilities quarter-by-quarter. By the end of 2007, all major Lighthouse func-tions reported directly to him.

We are thrilled to welcome Kirk Adams as our new president. Kirk’s extensive experience in non-profit leadership, his exception-al skills, and his unwavering dedication to the Lighthouse mission are tremendous assets to our organization. Under his leadership, we expect Seattle Lighthouse will continue as a national leader in employment and training for people with visual disabilities. As our first blind president, Kirk brings a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the community today. Under his guidance, we will continue to increase employment opportunities, upward mobility, and quality training.

This past year, we also took the first steps towards a watershed moment in our history: the establishment of our first satellite op-eration in Spokane, Washington. The Lighthouse board of trustees formed an ad-hoc committee to explore this project.

We purchased the satellite Inland Northwest facility this January. With this facility established, we committed to becoming a part of the Eastern Washington community and promoting opportunities for blind and Deaf-Blind individuals across the state. The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. is indebted to the great work of our ad-hoc com-mittee members in pursuing this possibility to make it a reality.

As we worked to expand employment opportunities, we ramped up programs promoting skills training for upward mobility. Our efforts in this area centered on computer competency and braille literacy, skills at the heart of competing in today’s market. Our Computer Training Program (CTP) celebrated its first an-niversary in October. In 2008, the CTP will add basic computer skills classes to better meet the needs of the people we serve. At the same time, we completed our program design for our Braille Literacy Program which will begin serving blind participants in 2008.

Amidst the many changes and new developments, we took time to celebrate a program that has been going strong for three decades: our Deaf-Blind Program celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The Puget Sound is home to the most vibrant and cohesive Deaf-Blind community in the country thanks to the opportunities and services available here. I commend the people who have helped to build this nationally-acclaimed program to the standing it holds today.

To all of you who were a part of our success in 2007, I extend my sincerest thanks.

Creating Opportunities“I didn’t have any idea I could have an opportunity in a place like this company. I love my job. I like to work with disabled people and find out about all the wonderful things they can do” — Nelly Barnett, Production Planning Assistant

In 2007, our top priority was building opportunities for greater upward mobility for individuals with visual disabilities. Blind and Deaf-Blind employees work in all levels of the organization, from the top executive position to jobs in information technology, administration, customer service, sales, communications, human resources, and manufacturing.

Highlights in building opportunities in 2007 include:• Adapting Machine Equipment. In 2007, we adapted three

state-of-the-art Okuma milling machines to be accessible to blind machinists. An electronic screen-reading program guides blind machinists through each step of the milling process while large print, white-on-black displays support machinists with low vision. We began Okuma training in 2007 and our first blind employee has been certified to run the equipment.

• Leaders at All Levels. Tony Jorgenson, a certified Leaders at All Levels trainer, traveled to National Industries for the Blind agencies in Sunnyvale and San Francisco to present leadership training.

• Employee Achievement: Last year, six blind employees were promoted to new positions. We applaud their hard work and achievement: Andy Bacon, Carla Abbott, Keri Brent, Linda Elliott, Mike Scheschy, and Steve Harrison. Don Swaney, business analyst, completed the intensive Busi-ness Management Training program at the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, Jordan Clodfelter was honored as our employee of the year and Carolyn Kennicott received the 2007 President’s Award. Read more about Jordan on page 5 and Carolyn on page 8.

As part of our planning process, the Employee and Community Services (ECS) department conducted stakeholder meetings with internal and external stakeholders in 2007. Taking the results of the stakeholder input, and aligning it with Lighthouse strategic objectives, resulted in the following new or strengthened program services:

Braille LiteracyIn 2007, we began program design and secured funding for our Braille Literacy Program. The Braille Literacy Program offers intensive, multi-year training designed especially for blind indi-viduals learning braille as adults. For a person who is completely blind, opportunities for upward mobility, technology training and staying informed are often contingent on being a competent braille reader.

Expansion of our Computer Training Program (CTP)Our CTP was launched in 2007 to provide intermediate vocational computer training for blind and low vision employees who had basic computer skills. In evaluating potential students, CTP staff identified a need for basic computer skills training including key-boarding training. In mid-2007, we began to expand our program design to include computer basics starting spring 2008.

Enhancement of Community Resource Information We have developed a community resource speakers forum of representatives from various local organizations who come in on a regular basis to share resource information with employees.

HousingWith the high cost of living in Seattle, our priority is to support blind and Deaf-Blind individuals in obtaining suitable housing that matches their needs.

Our housing support services include:• Support with application to local subsidy programs that reduce

the cost of living• Assistance applying for suitable housing• Identifying apartments matching blind and Deaf-Blind consumer

performances and budget

Sign Language and Deaf-Blind Culture TrainingSeattle Lighthouse employees are incredibly diverse when it comes to communication, with blind, Deaf-Blind, Deaf, hearing, and sighted employees all working together. To facilitate better communication for all our employees, we offer sign language training, including numerous 1:1 tactile sign language classes with blind employees. The Seattle Lighthouse is one of the few places in the nation where blind hearing individuals are learning sign language.

Orientation & Mobility (O&M)O&M program development continued in 2007 with the addition of another full-time O&M instructor. Our O&M instructors met the needs of numerous new employees, new funded contracts for O&M services, and the ongoing needs of employees as they navi-gate through the demolition/construction and ever changing transit landscape in the Seattle area.

CARF AccreditationECS is coordinating an organizational accreditation by Commission of Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities. This accreditation is necessary for us to do business, receive donations and grants, and to provide funded services. The site visit for the CARF accreditation will take place in May/June of 2008.

Your donations support Employee and Community Services, giv-ing blind and Deaf-Blind people the tools for independence and success. Thank you for your support.

Employee & Community Services

Government RelationsOur government relations work in 2007 focused on continuing to develop and maintain good relationships with our Washington Congressional delegation. We do this through attendance at local congressional events, visits to leaders in DC at least twice a year, specialized tours of the Lighthouse, and hosting officials at our programs such as the Deaf-Blind Retreat.

This year, our government relations work resulted in an additional two years of funding through the Washington State Department of Transportation for safe travel training on using the bus and transit systems, a new bus shelter on Martin Luther King Boulevard near the Lighthouse, and a request to submit a federal funding proposal to the Senate Transportation Committee in 2008. Thanks to all our legislators who made this happen.

Government Relations Specialist Mark Landreneau presented Senator Maria Cantwell with the JWOD Champion Award, which honors legislators who advocate for the AbilityOne program and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

President’s Award Winner : Carolyn Kennicott “Yippee! It’s Friday eve!” Lighthouse employees are greeted each Thursday with this cheery exclamation from Carolyn Kennicott. Her warm smile and quick wit brighten her co-workers’ days. When Carolyn isn’t at the Lighthouse, people notice.

Carolyn Kennicott’s dedication to accuracy keeps her in demand here at the Lighthouse. Last year, the Time-Keeping department recruited Carolyn to oversee production. She immediately jumped right in and became an integral part of the department. She has committed herself to maintaining a steady work pace, while at the same time working in hydration production department, keeping both operations running smoothly.

“Carolyn is very conscientious and detail-oriented,” says Malinda Burgett, who works alongside Carolyn in Time-Keeping. “Not only is she very organized and efficient, but she’s so much fun to work with.”

“Carolyn is a hoot,” Valerie Jorgensen, type clerk, agrees. “She is very cheerful and will keep you on your toes. Carolyn is known for her outgoing personality and has worked closely with man-agement and colleagues alike to help ensure that operations run efficiently. When a new employee is hired, Carolyn works with them to make sure they know where their time cards are kept and how to use them.”

“Carolyn has a fantastic attitude and is a team player,” says Kirk Adams, president. “Her passion about the Lighthouse mission, willingness to put all her talents to help move the Lighthouse forward, and her enthusiasm make her the perfect winner for the President’s Award.”

Carolyn is quick to jump in and help during Lighthouse events. You can find her helping out at our summer barbeque, holiday parties, and retirement parties, as well as monthly shop meetings.

President’s Award & 2007 Honor Roll of Donors 2007 Employee of the Year

Congratulations Jordan Clodfelter!Dedication, loyalty, and a willingness to work any job that comes his way are just a few of the reasons why Jordan Clodfelter won this year’s Employee of the Year Award.

Jordan was born in Portsmith, VA but grew up primarily in Issaquah. At eight years old his parents and teachers noticed problems with his vision. “I started with a magnifier to read books and by the time I was in high school I was using a CCTV scanner,” he says. “I could never see the blackboard in the classroom, not even if I was sitting in the front.” His doc-tor diagnosed him with retinitis pig-mentosa.

Jordan’s vision grad-ually declined, and by age 20 he was using a white cane to get around. “I was never able to drive, and I couldn’t really see at night,” he says. “I also have some hearing loss that I’ve had all my life and use a hearing aid.”

Jordan started work at the Lighthouse in May 1999 and has worked in a vari-ety of areas. “I’ve worked in [canteen production], the ma-chine shop, stamp production and business cards,” he says. “I’ve almost done it all.”

Currently, Jordan works in our annex building on hydration packs and other industrial products. “I’ve learned a lot and gained a lot of experience from the annex, and from every job I’ve done,” he says.

“Jordan’s attendance, his productivity and dedication to doing the best he can at work is unsurpassed in the annex,” says Jerry Kopp, who recently retired from his position as production supervisor. “Jordan is most conscious of quality and refuses to compromise even the slightest bit from total perfection of the product that he is working on.”

“Jordan is a very loyal employee,” says Jodene Martinson, who works alongside Jordan in production set-up. “He is always here, and does everything with enthusiasm. He’s a very polite, nice person – we’re lucky to have him.” Mae Sawyer, Lead for GSA, agrees. “He will try any job we ask him to,” she says. “He’s a good worker with a great sense of humor.”

“He will never say no to learning something new and is always ready to help a fellow co-worker if need be,” Jerry says. “Jordan is

a key person in getting things out the door on time for our Light-house customers.”

Jordan likes to vol-unteer at the Talking Book and Braille Li-brary whenever he can, and wishes he could be at the library every day to help out more. One of his favorite past-times is listen-ing to heavy metal music. “I would never have guessed it,” Jerry laughs. “Jordan is so mild mannered and easy going and heavy metal music seems to be just the opposite!” Jordan also enjoys reading non-fiction books and is learning how to cook. Aside from work, family is

also very important to Jordan. “Any time I have a problem, my family comes to the rescue,” he says. “And they know I would do the same for them.”

Jordan admits he was “a little surprised” about learning that he had won Employee of the Year. “But that’s Jordan,” says Jodene. “He’s very humble.”

“His productivity and sense of being the best he can at what ever he is doing is an inspiration to all of us in the annex,” adds Jerry. “That’s why he is Employee of the Year.”

Message from the Foundation PresidentCharter Lighthouse Legacy SocietyThe Lighthouse Legacy Society honors individuals designating planned gifts to the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation. Examples of planned giving arrangements including designating a bequest to the Foundation in their will or arranging a charitable gift annuity in support of the Lighthouse.

The only requirement for membership in the Lighthouse Legacy Society is written notification of a planned gift. Those who provided such written notification before April 2, 2008 entered the Lighthouse Legacy Society as charter members.

Unless otherwise designated by the donor, these gifts are placed in the Foundation’s permanent endowment fund, where principal remains intact in perpetuity, and earnings are used each year to support Lighthouse programs.

We extend our deepest thanks to the following generous and for-ward thinking individuals for making a magnificent investment in ensuring permanent opportunities for people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities.

Foundation Financials & Lighthouse Legacy SocietyMessage from the Foundation PresidentThank you to our supporters for helping to achieve our mission: to create and enhance opportunities for people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities. We couldn’t suc-ceed in our mission without the support of our community. As the president of the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation, I am proud to be part of such a generous group of people dedi-cated to creating opportunities for blind and Deaf-Blind people to succeed.

Our goal is to gather enough community support to cover all training program and sup-port service costs through philanthropic giving. Not only will that help to grow vital pro-grams and services, it will al-low all of our earned revenues to go directly into increasing Lighthouse employment op-portunities for people with visual disabilities. I am very pleased to report that contribu-tions increased by more than

33% from 2006 to 2007, thereby helping to expand jobs, training, and services for people with visual disabilities.

The Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation’s sole purpose is to gather and steward community support to further the Light-house mission through raising funds annually for our programs and services as well as establishing an endowment to support Lighthouse opportunities in perpetuity.

Lighthouse leadership has committed to expanding the trustees to the foundation board, actively reaching out to the community to garner financial support, and hosting special events and op-portunities for the greater community to participate in the Light-house mission. 2008 events will center on raising the profile of blind and Deaf-Blind people’s abilities, including special tours with blindness simulations and our Redefining Vision Dinner and Auction which included a showcase of items made by members of the blind and Deaf-Blind communities.

The criteria we will look for in new Foundation Trustees will include:• passion for the Lighthouse mission,• excellent network of friends and contacts within our

community,• a commitment of time spent carrying the message of

our mission to the community,• and the ability to ask for help and assistance in obtaining

our mission and goals.

As we develop the foundation board, we will partner with the community to further develop philanthropic opportunities to serve the blind and Deaf-Blind communities.

Tom Kuebler

Will PowerThe Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation is hon-ored to be remembered in the wills of dedicated and thoughtful donors. These individuals have expressed their commitment to creating opportunities for blind members of our community by including Lighthouse programs in their estate plans and wills. The Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation received the following gifts from October 1st, 2006 to September 30th, 2007 as a direct result of this gener-osity and foresight:

Legacies in MemorandumNellie Carman $100.00 Wilhelmina Clapp $1,330.41 Evelyn Egtvedt $34,813.35 Sarah Johnson $34,842.00 Louise S. Kidwiler $8,493.38 Lisel Salzer $1,500.00

Emma Leavenworth $6,598.81 Hortense W. Lewis $100.00 Elizabeth McDonald Parsons $10,160.00 Emma Smith Olsen $3,493.99 George Trimble $21,743.48

In 2007, philanthropic contributions funded a range of crucial pro-grams and services, including orientation and mobility training for blind and Deaf-Blind adults, the Computer Training Program for blind adults, the Technology Training Center for Deaf-Blind indi-viduals, American Sign Language interpreting services, our An-nual Retreat at Seabeck for members of national and international Deaf-Blind communities, and equal access to braille materials for blind adults.

By making an investment in the Lighthouse, donors partnered with the Seattle Lighthouse to grow significant training opportu-nities for blind and Deaf-Blind members of our community and allowed earned income revenues to go back into operations – di-rectly resulting in new Lighthouse jobs for blind and Deaf-Blind individuals.

Community support is integral to funding our programs and cre-ating new opportunities for people who are blind, Deaf-Blind, and blind with other disabilities. In the years ahead, we expect philanthropy to play an increasing role in furthering our mis-sion, creating new jobs, and serving the community. To all of you who have made an investment in the Lighthouse mission, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
