The San Francisco Education Fund trains and supports community volunteers to help students in kindergarten through third grade increase their phonics skills, sight-word recognition, oral reading fluency and reading comprehension.

We direct community resources to five of San Francisco’s highest-need elementary schools to help students reach this critical milestone. The Literacy Program school sites are:

• Dr. George Washington Carver Elementary School • El Dorado Elementary School • Junipero Serra Elementary School • Sheridan Elementary School• Tenderloin Community School

Literacy Program volunteers tutor students one-on-one or in small groups. One-on-one volunteers tutor students for 30 minutes, once or twice a week, while group volunteers support an entire classroom through small group workstations for one hour each week.

Mastering math is key to graduating from high school, persisting in college and unlocking careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), San Francisco’s largest growing employment sector.

Studies show that students scoring in the top quartile in eighth-grade reading and math standardized tests are 61% more likely to enroll at a four-year college. The San Francisco Education Fund’s Math Program helps provide the necessary support to ensure San Francisco public school students master math by eighth grade. We direct community resources to four of San Francisco’s highest-need middle schools to help students reach this critical milestone. Our Math Program school sites are:

• Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School • James Denman Middle School • James Lick Middle School • Bessie Carmichael 6-8 Middle School

The San Francisco Education Fund trains and supports community volunteers to help sixth through eigth grade students increase their understanding of, and fluency in, the math concepts underlying the Common Core State Standards. Volunteers work with students identified by their teacher as needing extra support. Math Program volunteers tutor a student for one hour a week.

We help students fall in love with reading...

Learn to make math less puzzling...The Maisin Scholar Award Program identifies and supports San Francisco Public School seniors who are determined to achieve their academic goals beyond high school. The Maisin Scholar Award helps students overcome the financial obstacles that stand in between them and their pursuits of higher education. More than 75 students receive the award annually which includes:

• Financial support• Academic and career counseling• Internships and professional development opportunities• Encouragement and direction• Community and peer support

And make college dreams a reality.

I enjoyed using tried and trusted strategies that helped students improve their skills and confidence in mathematics! - Math Tutor
