We are proud to present the 2014 Annual Report and an opportunity to celebrate our donors. As we reflect on the past year, we are excited to report a year of stability with funding, staffing and programs. This has allowed us to continue to improve the quality of life for children, families and adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community.

This past year, we have raised money with special campaigns and applied for grants to support the increasing costs of transportation, which allowed us to purchase a much-needed new 15-passenger van.

The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region is a leader in providing family support services, supported living, treatment foster care and supported employment to individuals and families working and living in Harford and Cecil Counties. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right and the opportunity to live independently, advocate for themselves and work in the community.

Our mission is possible because of our dedicated staff, volunteers, donors and the overwhelming support from our community. This year’s Annual Report features a story about a young man, Erik Anders, who is “Living the American Dream.”

Thank you for your generous support of our mission with your time, talent and treasure.

Sincerely,

A message from the Executive Director & Board President

Gary StokesBoard President

Shawn KrosExecutive Director

The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to create lives that mirror yours and mine: students attending neighborhood schools, adults going to work and living in their own homes, and inviduals enjoying the social and recreational opportunities in their communities.

“Living the American Dream”

Erik Anders is living the American dream! How? A self-described “industry man,” Erik is passionate about machinery of any type. When asked what he wants to do, he says, “I want to work with machines.” His knowledge of machines is extensive and he readily gives you details on every machine and how they operate. Unfortunately, because of his disability, companies were unwilling to hire him to run their machinery. He doesn’t drive and was only looking for part-time work. After many closed doors standing between Erik and his dream, he was able to secure a position at Acadia Windows and Doors in Baltimore, and has been there for nearly five years. His employer accommodated his need for part-time work, gave him the opportunity to run virtually every machine in the factory and encouraged him to grow. He has operated almost every machine in the plant, such as pneumatic and electric drills, fabricators and welding devices. He is also one of a small group of employees who is allowed to operate the glass conveyor, which drops large sheets of glass onto a conveyor belt.

Living the American Dream is hard work for anyone, but especially so for individuals with developmental disabilities. Without transportation provided by The Arc NCR, initial and drop in coaching supports and the modified work schedule, Erik would not be successful.

Erik Anders, The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region
